DNF. I don’t like the FMC, she’s all I’m a strong independent woman and then a super whiny horrible person.
I don’t like the way she treats and interacts with her siblings. She treats all but 1 like crap and things bad about them. I have a bunch of siblings and get annoyed with them but i would never seriously treat them like she does, and she isn’t playing, she’s serious.
I also don’t like how she treats her mates. She’s a B! I mean come on, she’s so stupid she can’t figure out what her “mate” is doing is to protect her from the evil Queen. I mean it’s hinted at so many times and the timing and everything should also clue her in. But no she’s a strong independent woman and he screwed her over. “Insert giant eye roll.”
It’s not that this was bad or even terrible, it’s just the unevenness of it all that bugged me to no end. The first book started off very strongly and the it was like a steady nosedive. Evie just kept getting worse and worse and I just couldn’t understand why she wasn’t evolving or getting better. The character became annoying and instead of using sense and rational thought, her decision making skills was just awful. Also what’s the point of a reverse harem if there wasn’t an opportunity for them all to join together, it just made me wonder how could she possibly be a unit with all four if the 3 males weren’t ready to share her. Also I definitely felt like the three books after the first were poorly structured and not thought out well. Often I’d wonder if there was novella or something that was to take place between chapters because everything would shift and you’d wonder just how much time passed or what happened to so and so.
Our FMC is a 21 year old woman with six siblings. Missing parents and soon to be the interest of three centuries old Fae Kings.
I switched between liking, disliking and meh.
The initial build felt rushed and it bugs me how easy some revelations were read in without much of a reaction from our FMC.
I did enjoy the banter of our FMC, took a while to warm up to all of our MMCs. I am a Rides fan in many ways.
There is not much darkness in terms of triggers. Maybe that made it harder for me to like the whole story. At one point I just thought, maybe I should leave it at book 2. But pushing on wasn't bad and in the end there were many good funny moments.
Our FMC siblings...oh Emmet...learn to lock or put a chair against the door. And one of my favourite quotes, "stop pimping out your sister". gives a clue into their hijinks.
In the end this is a fae/demon paranormal reverse harem story, with steamy, well written smut and a HEA.
While the story started quite interestingly and the characters were fascinating and lively, I can’t really recommend this read.
The main lady is an interesting person and she grows alot during the story. But she also is a weird mix of brains, brattitude and senseless brawn. She runs around in circles and while she seems to grasp her situation from time to time, she also reverts to a frustrating bundle of stupid in between. I’m not sure if the writer failed to lock down her personality or if they had so many threads to weave in the story that they just failed with half of them.
Sometimes it seemed the book had had several sidestories that had been cut crudely out since often the story just doesn’t make sense or it repeats facts to every character multiple times, or it refers to something that has happened like the reader should know it already.. Sometimes the internal monologues went on and on for too long. And if the reader gets angsty for the character who in the middle of a fight starts to muse about relationships, then the book looses a bit of shine.
There were also several plot twists that seemed unnecessary in the grand scheme of the story. Some confrontations were quite pointless. I felt like the writer would have needed a diligent editor who was not afraid to cut out intense scenes.
*disclaimer* since this is a review for an entire series I broke it down by book with an over all generalized review at the end. There might be some mild spoilers.
Fever Fae
The book starts off with Evelina getting up to get her six siblings up and ready for school. We learn that both their parents went missing three days prior with no clue to what happened. During breakfast they get attacked but what I would describe as a shadow beast. And while chasing it off she runs into Baron and Rowan who were both tracking it. Things were said and Peper was sprayed and in the end they think Evelina is both their mates. But she isn’t having any of it. She was just saddled with a ton of responsibility taking care of 6 kids ranging from 6-15 and they all have the attitude to go with it. We soon meet Rydstrom when she tries to get a job at his bar because she heard it paid well and she now needs to feed and cloth her siblings.
It was an interesting read. There are 3 fae kings and a fae queen. There was a lot of talk about dark Fae but it was barely glossed over. Im intrigued enough to keep reading because I have so many questions.
Like what are her parents jobs?
What’s going on with the little sister?
Why did her father train her so hard but not her siblings?
Who is this queen and why do I hate her already?
Do we get to see more of the bartender friend because I like her?
Lets talk Harem. We have three. Which in my opinion is the perfect amount we have Baron, Rowan, and Rydstrom. Its still fairly early to judge them. I can tell that Baron ( the summer King) is definitely the ladies man of the group. Jury is still out on Rowan (Winter King) and Rydstrom will be the Protective hurt soul. I can just see his back story being dark.
Frost Fae
I feel like that escalated quickly. I feel like barely anything of note happened in book one and just the opposite happened in book 2 we learn more about what it means to be a mate and just how possessive the three kings can be, but we also see them work together to try to protect Evie, the best they can.
As a prediction, I will say I don’t think the winter king is actually betraying her like they were literally talking about it and she didn’t make the connection? He’s doing what he’s doing to protect her be a double agent.
Her sister is definitely sus
I’m also wondering is she truly a dark one? I Mean she has the power and we’ve already suspected that her sister is. She could see through her glamour. Needless to say it was a good read and I will definitely be continuing with the story.
Night Fae
This book starts shortly after the last one ends with her little brother being taken captive. Their solution is to plan some kind of summit in hopes of getting her brother back? It just seemed very pointless, but it did show us the mages which we haven’t seen before and we figured out what happened to her parents, in the end
She still had to go into the hunt overall I don’t know how to feel about this book. I enjoyed it. I like to see that she starting to come into herself and realize who she is. Just seemed kind of pointless in the end overall I really enjoyed the book
She finally has mate bonds with all three of her mates, and I say three because I still don’t believe the winter king has betrayed her, like he didn’t battle at all during the summit and why all the looks and feelings of betrayal from him.
Blood Fae
This book seemed kinda rushed to me. The book starts immediately after the 3rd book with Evie leaving the hunt and the Night king and Summer King having no memory of her.
We learn that she went through the turning in the passage of time? Kinda confused about that still. And she pops back out at the night Kings club which is destroyed. Thousands of Humans are dead because of Pestilence. And apparently shes predictable and everyone figured that’s where she would come.
Like I said this book is fast paces. From start to finish. I mean I think the entire 4th book is only about a 5 hour listen if you listen at x1 speed. It also end unsatisfyingly. I just have so man questions.
Will we see a story following their future kings?
What about her siblings?
What happened to Sophie?
Why does Lucy want her as his Heir?
Does he really want to invade heaven or is he just lonely? Like him and Mayve had at least 3 children together and he had many other kids so maybe he’s just lonely ( I’m a softy for a Lucy story)
What War will her Daughter start? (With Heaven?)
Honestly, I could have used an extended epilogue of her and her kings interacting together. We got so little of that in the books. The winter king is pretty much nonexistent past the 2nd book. and the other 2 were MIA most of the last book.
Generalized Review Over all I really enjoyed the series. It was a relatively quick read for me and a what I like to call a pallet cleanser. It not super heavy in any way and its entertaining enough to keep me engaged. I would definitely recommend this series to others as well as the Audiobook. The narrator did a good job with the series and I will be picking up more books done by her
I actually had the complete series collection on audio (It had all 4 books on one book) when I started this. I wasn't really in a position to be able to change books at the time and it was a kind of listen to this or do not listen to anything. Why am I mentioning this? Well, because it was not too far into the first book when I started thinking...."oh no...." and I had to decide to keep going or just stop. Well, I made it through the first book and the second, but then I just could not go on any longer.
First of all, we have a female MC who has been raised as a human for her entire life. She has 6 other siblings and has left for her first year of college. She then discovers that her parents are missing and comes home to take care of her siblings while the police are looking for her parents. Okay so far, right?
That was probably the only part that made sense. Not too long after, there is some type of attack in their home with some type of monster who is trying to kill her. She ends up killing it with some type of shadow that comes out of her (that's a surprise, right?), but decides that's not anything to worry about. Remember - she is human and does not know about the paranormal world.
Then she meets two Fae Kings who just happen to be in her front yard, she can understand the Fae language and yet she doesn't think any of this is weird. She is obnoxious, arrogant and spoiled.
Little by little, it comes out that her parents have been training her (and ONLY her - none of her other siblings) in martial arts, hunting, sword fighting, guns her entire life...get the picture? Oh, and they called her "Princess". She also had instances where "odd" things happened to her while growing up where she appeared to have certain "powers" But, that doesn't mean anything.... Again, she refuses to believe ANYTHING that every single of these supernaturals that she is now running into quite often - are telling her.
So, it didn't take long for me to just have a problem with the female MC. I just couldn't like her. She had so many moments that were TSTL. Seriously. And did I mention she was annoying?
And of course, this is a RH so there are 3 Kings who want her - she is their True Mate of course -and there are the many, many requisite descriptions of EXACTLY how she feels around them (LUST), all while trying to ignore any type of information that might actually explain this new situation..
I did think, okay, let's keep going and see what is going to happen (the actual plot had potential - there is an evil Queen who wants to kill her)) so I kept going to book 2. Honestly, it was more of the same. There was some progress with her discovering things that she really couldn't deny any longer. There was that. But then she is so emotionally immature. She wants one king, mates with him, and then doesn't even understand when there is danger that could kill her and that people are trying to protect her. She wants to scream and yell when people tell her to be quiet if she wants to live because the situation is dangerous. Does she listen? No, because she's pissed and feeling slighted without paying attention and trying to understand EXACTLY what was going on....ugh.....I could not.
Just no. No more.
So - that was it. I made it to the halfway point (I finished two books out of 4) and I decided to call it quits.
This series offered in one novel was a better deal and satisfying read than taking them on separately!
This book was full of contradictions -- i.e. On page 38, Evie calls their vehicle an suv, then after a couple page turns to page 40, a few hours have gone by, and she's suddenly driving a van. In addition to the confusing facts and details randomly thrown into the equation, it's as if Evie's trying to unload reams of background information to help the writer impart potentially significant answers to unavoidable questions about Evie's origins, her power, and her place in the long-standing prophecy of the coming of one true love for three Fae kings. It often has Evie drifting away in her mind, awkwardly spacing out to recount events, situations, conversations, and updates on the Fae half-sibling kings of Winter, The Night,
And the f-bombs. Evie cusses as fluently like a drunken sailor, or a crew of construction workers having a bad day. The first couple books weren't that well written, and seemed disjointed. However, the writer stepped it up in the succeeding and final books. I kinda liked how she wove in the prophecy with mythology, and the advent of Lucifer's involvement, as it was pretty clear why the demons and dark armies ran away after Evie's blood spilled on the battlefield. The could scent the presence of Lucifer in her blood, and his claim on her. Of course, Meg inserts a twist to Persephone's curse, and makes it all about the lost Queen of the Dawn Court. This turned out to be a great book, once the writer offered it in one nice package (having to read separate short novellas wasn't wonderful for me - I like a novel with meat to it, and reading a seven-hundred page novel was better than reading the same story in four separate novellas. That was annoying, so I stopped after the first book, which I hadn't thought much of). When I saw the series offered in the one booj, I purchased that. I have no regrets. This writer redeemed herself in the subsequent books and I was able to read the story in its entirety in one go. Four solid stars, because that first book was just bad. But, as I've already stated, the others made up for it. Evelina became more tolerable, even likeable, and her kings - mmmmm! They sounded like such fun, and were described so delightfully. That they were all so gorgeous, yet completely, differently, individual made the multiple mates idea more appealing and sexy. 🌟🌟🌟🌟
I'm truly at a loss trying to think of words to review this series. I did finish the series. Well, to be completely honest, I skimmed through a lot of it after book 2. This series got finished because I didn't have anything else to read. The world building and plot were ok in book one. But I started to notice the similarities between this series and the authors Half Blood Academy series. So many similarities!!! I read Half Blood Academy and it was ok. So I tried this series by the author. The protagonist is TSTL. I think the author knew that too. LOL...She has TSTL (Too Stupid To Live) in one of her scenes. Even the protagonists mates are TSTL. I got so tired of hearing the protagonist whine that I started rooting for the enemy. The story was all over the place. The flow was off. The protagonist doesn't remember some of her own powers until she's knocking on deaths door. Then it's like, "Oh yeah. I can do this ability." Utter childishness. She's always questioning stuff. "Why do we have to do this ritual again?" Uh....Because you want to win and this is the only way to kill your enemy. Just like you were told 2 pages ago before we started going through this stupid shyt. Just the author coming up with ridiculous filler to prolong the books. I won't be looking through this authors books again for something to read.
Whooa. Okay I absolutely LOVE Meg Xuemei X work. Like her Half-Blood Academy series was great. I really enjoyed it. This felt very very different. Yes, it seems to be in a different kind of world but we aren't sure. I'm thinking human but it seems humans knew of "others". There wasn't much thought into world building at all which sucked because you gotta have fabulous world building to impress me and go with the story. The story just kind fell flat for me. It had good things but mostly meh. I was hooked so I had to finish the series. So, I guess there is that. MC confused me sometimes with how she treated her siblings. Clearly her parents treated her better than the others. They had her on a pedestal and that wasnt fair to her other siblings. Then they go missing. Not exactly her fault but she had to know she had it better. Best weapons, clothes, and education. She supposedly was this great fighter and was trained but man first sign of trouble she got scared and froze or something. Ss, this was kinda all over the place. Almost like someone else wrote it but I dont know. I havent read but one series by her. This seemed so different like she didnt try as hard. I got bored a lot and skimmed a few times. Not something I'd really recommend unfortunately.
This was a decent series overall. I initially like the MFC, Evie, when book 1 began. She was smart, spunky and somewhat resourceful. Her smart mouth and sense of humor were great. But then book 2, if I remember correctly, seemed to remove any and all intelligence from her character! She just became a girl with a smart mouth that also talked too much at inconvenient times.
The world building was decent as it had the mortal world and faerie, although it wasn’t clear how you could cross from one to the other because at one point it was said that you had to have powerful magic to cross, but then humans were brought across for the Wild Hunt.
The last book was overly drawn out and too me forever to read since I kept putting it down, bored and annoyed with how much repetitiveness and rambling Evie was doing. There were so many recaps of the previous chapters, as if things took place in a different book published months or years apart.
There was a lot of comedic relief, especially from King Baron. Evie had her fair share as well. Overall, I enjoyed the characters and consider it a decent read.
See my notes, highlights and commentary on Goodreads. Happy reading.
The story opens with the FMC stating that her parents spontaneously disappeared 3 days ago but that she has since "...dropped out of college and left my hot boyfriend to come home to take care of my six younger siblings." That's a lot of big decisions in 3 days! For all they know (obviously it doesn't happen because that's the point of the story) the parents could walk in the door any minute. One day would have been spent on not knowing the parents disappeared. So day 2, she decides she has to drop out of college and break up with her boyfriend? If she had a cold it could have lasted longer than this and been excused. That seems really drastic for day 2.
There are other wierd things too. The 15 year old sister asking for an omelet with a pint of ricotta cheese. Maybe she's not supposed to know how much a pint is? Or the FMC just assuming the police and neighbors have no information about her missing parents. It's not big details but wierd that she just assumes no one knows anything after 3 days.
DNF. I could not get into the writing at all. It was overly descriptive in practically every sentence. It all felt very forced. I did not like the characters either. TW: One of the MC's tries to SA the FMC immediately after meeting her and implies he forces situations often with basically every other woman he meets and it's all supposed to be okay because he's attractive and we as readers are supposed to just pretend like that whole situation didn't happen? We're supposed to support a relationship between them? This badass, super independent, and strong woman is going to choose to be with a KNOWN assaulter because he's hot? Couldn't get behind it. It's one thing when it's written as a kink in a consensual-noncon-sexy way in some dark romances, but this was just gross. There were much better ways to establish how powerful she must be to refrain from his powers and better ways to paint the picture of how attractive he is supposed to be.
This is so bad. Total DNF. I have ventured into RH because I have read so many normal fantasy romance and branched out. This really doesn't qualify as RH and the main female char is a brat who gets mouthy because she is a "Strong, independent woman" and so she has a right to voice her opinions that make her look like a jerk. The males that are fated to her have no actual reason to be into her other than their bond. One is a total pompous jerk, one is a broody, dark personality and the third is cold and calculating. Except with her, of course. Then they are all devoted. I have liked what I have read by Meg Xuemei X before but this one is absolutely ridiculous. I tried twice to finish it and I just can't. It's too painful.
Took me two nights of reading until five in the morning, but finally finished the series. Totally awesome is one way to describe this series, with all its twists and turns. The Fae Kings well they are steamy hot, Evelina/Ileana perfect badass, loved the snarkiness made me laugh. Got my happy ending, the good guys have always got to win, don't care if it's not feasible in real life but in my book life it's got to end happily. I would happily encourage anyone and everyone to read this series and now I am going to see what other epic reads I can find by this fabulous author.
There's no escaping that this is a terribly written series. The MC isn't a basass she's a pain in the ass. The story makes very little sense, there's a lack of a everything really, plot moves come out of nowhere, the lines are terrible. The expected awesome fae Magic had potential but when the evil baddie screamed 'I hate you' ?? I lost the plot and LOL.
But.. did I consume this in 2 days? Yes. Was it exactly what I wanted? Yes.
It served a purpose, I wanted something easy read that was fae. And I'm in lockdown so it passed time. If you go in reading with an open mind, not expecting greatness you'll be ok
This is a med-slow burn reverse harem paranormal series. It’s based partly on earth and partly in the fairy kingdom of Elfame. This follows the story of a young woman who has to drop out of college when her parents go missing so she can raise her younger siblings. Soon she finds out she’s not as human as she thought! The books are well written and the storyline was very engaging. The FMC was well portrayed, however one criticism is she seemed to see-saw from kick ass Fae Queen to bumbling human girl a bit too much! There were some spectacular spice scenes though! Overall a great read and I will be looking for more of Megs books!!
I'm not going to give away anything in this book/series. I just want to implore you to read it. Finished all the books in one day . So unashamedly we had take out for dinner. I forgot to cook! Yep i was madly into this book I forgot my wifely duties, husband and kids near!y starved to death. Yes not pretty at all. But seriously this book bewitched me. Meg is one of my favourite authors, when she writes I read. Simple as that. So unfortunately there are dark days ahead for my family.......
The writing was really uneven and there was a lot of sudden “there’s a secret solution to this problem.” And a lot of loose ends never get resolved. And I suspect the author didn’t have a set timeline to reference, because sometimes an event was 2 days ago and then one paragraph down it was “a while back”.
Also the reverse harem is a divide and conquer, not a collaborative loving unit.
Reading this as one big book is the only way that works. The 4 separate books don’t make any sense on their own.
I have read other stuff by this author that blew me away. This was just okay. I feel like if the world building was better then I would have liked it more. The fighting and dialog between the sisters could have been more mature. It was supposed to come off as sparky and funny but it just came off as immature. Not a bad book, but the whole thing just went to fast paced and didn't explain the story well. At times I had to go back and re read a page because I didn't know where the characters were.
I love when you find an author that will combine an entire series into a single book! The story of Evie has so many different layers…it’s like peeling an onion-the farther into the story, the more you find out not only who she is, but what she is. And just when you think you have her figured out…nope, she’s that and more. And more. And more. I enjoy the RH aspect of a Fae story. Especially when the female involved holds her own against her bevy of males. This is one you’re most definitely going to want to read!
I don't understand why authors insist on making 4 books, that could have been 3 books or maybe even 2 books. I mean, you're not M Night Shyamalan. Please stop throwing in another twist just to prolong your unnecessarily long story. The overall premise of this story was interestand I really wanted to see how it all ended. But honestly it really just drug on and on. I had to switch from the audiobook to the written one just so I could essentially fast forward because I read much more quickly.
I thoroughly enjoyed this series. I’m getting pretty tired of cliffhangers and unfinished series. I have about 6 series in currently reading and just so happen to be waiting for their next books. I started reading book one, only to realize I brought it a long time ago lol. So o downloaded the complete series and audible as well. I did not finish the series in the past. I’m glad to have been able to enjoy this from start to finish. I love being able to go back and forth between reading and listening when I can’t read.
This book was everything I wanted. The chemistry between the characters was amazing and I loved how strong the MC was. There was a perfect amount of spice with a plot line that just wouldn't quit. I found myself tearing through these books. And the wild hunt??? So freaking cool. If you like fae and spice with an amazing plot line this is the book series for you! I am speechless and so sad it is over.
WOW! These books are an amazing read!! The 3 Hs and Heroine are just perfect together! The heroine has plenty of dads in her, and can more than match the 3 CRUEL gated mayes who have found het! Their chemistry is off thecharts, and the stpryline, running throughout the books is strong, and so easy to get into! Please lafies, but this complete series, you won't be sorry you did! If give it more stars of I could!!
Enjoyable Adult read. I was a little thrown off by the lead character's sometimes mentally slow response to her situation. I have found that Xuemi's female leads are sharp & responsive to their predicaments. This heroine meandered. I was like " c'mon girl" stop being slow on the uptake! But Evie is fierce, like all of this author's characters. Good ADULT fantasy read.
This was a A great concept and storyline but there were some spots that were missing information or something happens and it expected you to know what was happening when it has not been previously addressed. It also didn’t always connect or finish somethings that had been stated in early your book or in the same book in earlier chapters. I think it had the potential to be amazing but fell short because of the lack of detail.
I’ve owned this audible version about 9ish months now. I bought the audio because I like the author, there was a sale and it’s a complete series. Can’t ask for more, right? Immediately after buying, I read some reviews. WRONG. Idk why I do that. Everyone has different tastes. This was pretty fabulous. Had all the right ingredients, humor, spice, great plot. It will definitely be in my re-listen/re-read shelf.
There's a lot to it, and honestly...it's almost as it the author tried to have this big convoluted plot and storyline to it but it just kind of...fell short. They tried to make the reader feel, but it just didn't seem believable (which I know sounds dumb when reading a fantasy romance 🥴). It just seemed forced and, I don't know...like the author wanted to make things that weren't a big problem a big problem
