Gods of Hunger #2

Keep Me Close

Rate this book
She is the closest thing Khaos Falls has to a goddess…

And Aphrodite is feared and worshipped in equal measure. She has dedicated her life to being a savior for the lost regardless of the risk, but when unknown enemies nearly assassinate her in her own club, she realizes her reckless vigilante tactics won’t cut it anymore.

He is the furthest thing Khaos Falls has from a hero…

In fact, Hephaestus is who you call when all the heroes have fallen. Still, he is the best at what he does, strengthening the city’s weaknesses and keeping his feelings out of it. When tasked with Aphrodite’s personal security, it’s easy for him to detach himself from their mutual disdain. Until disdain is no longer the only thing he feels for her.

With their enemies elusive and snakes in their midst, good hearts and sharp wit may not be enough. But he made a vow, and he will keep it. Even if it means turning newfound feelings into newfound strengths and using them as a weapon to protect her.

Hello from the other side.

I'm 100% sure my heart belongs to RM Virtues. His stories? THEY ARE ART. I do not have the words to express my love for this series and Virtues' work. Every time he publishes a book, I'm going to be there, clicking.

Keep Me Close is the sequel and second novel of the Gods of Hunger series. It stars Aphrodite and Hephaestus, two people who hate each other's guts. Unfortunately for both of them (NOT FOR ME!), Heph has just become Aphrodite's bodyguard, because she has an enemy who wants her head on a platter. The best person to keep her safe is her ex's older brother who she hates and can't seem to actually have a normal conversation without arguing about something.

This book is filled with so much goodness. Every single chapter gives you something beautiful and entertaining. Aphrodite and Heph are such good main characters, I wanted to get to know them on a deeper level since the first book. They are so fascinating and when you're inside their heads, you want to keep digging. Their love story? OOOF. It has hate sex, hate kissing, daddy kink, it has so much sexual tension. I was sweating while reading this book.

Let's not forget it has the knife on the throat scene we all love so much to read.

If you are searching for a greek mythology romance series, look no further and pick up the Gods of Hunger series. Start with Drag Me Up which is a Hades and Persephone romance and then when Keep Me Close comes out, be ready to one-click. This series will continue to bless us, I'm sure.

Ari: *dusts off laptop*

If someone had told me that I would ever be sitting down to write up a blog review again, I wouldn't have believed them. But when R.M. asked if I would be interested in reading an ARC of Keep Me Close , I absolutely COULD NOT pass up the chance to read one of my most anticipated releases for the summer early, and luckily my bestie Nick was kind enough to let me review it with her on her blog. So buckle up folks and prepare yourselves for a wild review (pretty sure R.M. is gonna regret his decision to give us ARCs, lol).

Nick: Hello and welcome to the blog to my crusty frenemy #1!
Ari and I fangirled hard over R.M Virtues’ debut in our texts so it was only logical that we reviewed this book together when he approached us with an ARC. I have no idea how this review is going to go because the two of us together IS a lot but hopefully it’s entertaining enough for y’all. And hey! Look at us coming together to write a post that won’t cause drama! Is this growth??

Ari: Back in April, Nick told me about a new release called Drag Me Up and said that I had to read it. So I did, and it became my first five-star read in over a year and my favorite read of 2021! It’s been a long ass time since a new-to-me author has completely swept me off my feet with their words so when I say that I am OBSESSED with Virtues’ storytelling, it is not to be taken lightly. So if you are thinking about picking up Keep Me Close but you haven’t yet read Drag Me U p, then I suggest righting that wrong immediately for two very important reasons: (1) so you can get a better understanding of the world of Khaos Falls and all its main players, and (2) BECAUSE EVERYONE ABSOLUTELY NEEDS TO MEET SIMP HADES AND HIS LEADING LADY PERSEPHONES

Now let’s get to raving about Keep Me Close ! The second installment in the Gods of Hunger series follows our couple Hephaestus and Aphrodite. Unlike the first book where readers are eased into the world of Khaos Falls, the sequel throws us straight in the midst of a chaotic scene where the stakes are high and the adrenaline is running higher. R.M. really said no brakes, all accelerator and a bitch did not have her seatbelt on so I was not prepared for this! The story opens up with the attempted assissination of Khaos Falls’ most beloved leader, Aphrodite. For someone who is always swooping in to save others, Aphrodite soon finds herself in need of some saving—and she’s not too happy about it either because the man assigned to protect her is also someone she hates with a passion, Hephaestus. I felt like I was holding my breath with each passing chapter because neither Hephaestus nor Aphrodite knew who they could trust since Aphrodite’s inner circle had been compromised. Every time I thought I had figured out who the traitors were, something would go down and I’d be back to square one. We are literally kept on the edge until the very last few chapters! This book does touch upon some heavier themes, like sex trafficking, so just be aware of that before diving in.

Nick: Phew, yes! This installment as a whole was a lot more action-packed than Drag Me Up . I sort of went into this book without any expectations or without knowing much about the book. The only thing I knew about it was that it was a bodyguard romance and I’ve been lamenting the lack of GOOD bodyguard romances for what feels like forever - why must every bodyguard romance be a royalty romance??? Seeing what R.M. did with his debut, I had hopes that he would deliver a story that would satisfy my bodyguard romance needs and he for sure gave me the story I wanted. Keep Me Close does explore some darker themes such as sex trafficking and attempted murder, which really does heighten the tension in this book and adds to the action.

Ari: The bodyguard trope is one that has been ruined for me—and not in a good way (IYKYK)— so I don’t often seek out romances with this trope. But y’all, I think Keep Me Close might have reignited my interest in this trope. I genuinely feel like this is the first bodyguard romance I’ve read where the bodyguard is ACTIVELY protecting their charge. Like Heph is out here doing Protective Daddy shit, and even though he can’t stand Aphrodite, he’s not gonna let her be killed on his watch. Speaking of not being able to stand one another, I think this is the first romance I’ve read where the leads genuinely hate each other. I wasn’t sure if they were going to kiss or skin each other alive during the first kiss scene. I also want to mention that our hero is disabled as he has a degenerative muscular disorder and not only do we get to see how this disorder affects Heph on the daily, but we also see how it affects him in the bedroom in terms of finding sexual positions that work for both him and Aphrodite. It’s little details like this that just make this romance for me! Also to my fellow hoes who enjoy a good Daddy kink romance, let me just say that my man Heph knows how to lay down the law in the bedroom. 👀

Nick: Not you shading THAT series. *laughs* I can’t take you anywhere!
I agree. That man is FINE. I would fight you for him but we need to behave for the sake of professionalism. Heph has got such a protective streak and I loved how he didn’t let his disorder stop him from doing the things he wanted. Heph looks like a tough nut from the outside, but is actually a softie on the inside just like Hades! We love that here! Heph could do me any day of the week with those moves of his and that DIRTY AF mouth.

I tweeted this while I was reading the book but I genuinely think R.M. writes some of the best sex scenes I’ve read in romance. They are steamy but also convey all the emotions the couple is feeling towards each other. They are hot, sensual, and emotional! That’s all I want from a really good sex scene. I’m also with Ari re: the hate vibes. This is one of the few books I’ve read that truly gives in to the hate between the couple and it’s glorious. You’re going to need a fire extinguisher when reading this book.

Ari: While Aphrodite may have a hard shell, once you crack her open you see how big her heart truly is. She is all about helping those who are unable to help themselves and protecting the people of her city. She literally puts her own life at risk many times throughout this book which ultimately lands her in a few near-death experiences, but I think that’s what I loved most about her. She’s an all-or-nothing gal, a take it or leave it woman. Hephaestus on the other hand is more guarded and tends to make an action plan before going in guns blazing. It took a minute to warm up to him because he can be so closed off at times, but once you peel back the layers, you see that Hephaestus also has a big heart and he cares deeply, especially for those he is most closest to. I think the fact that Aphrodite thinks with her heart while Hephaestus thinks with his head is what makes these two such a great pair. Like once these two are on the same page, there is no stopping them and they are a force to be reckoned with which is why enemies of Khaos Falls better think twice before crossing them.

Nick: You basically said everything I wanted to say about Aphrodite. I loved her so much but she could also stress me out throughout the book. I was worried sick for Aphrodite and the children she was trying to save. I think it’s one of the reasons I had such a hard time putting this book down - I read it one sitting! Logically, I knew it was going to end with a HEA because this is a romance novel, but I still needed to read it with my own eyes. Part of that is because Aphrodite is trusting. Though I wouldn’t call Aphrodite reckless, she did often see the good in people which scared me because the perpetrator was right in her circle. It’s true what they say about snakes being right in your midst. And Ari is right! Heph and Aphrodite may have started off hating each other, but it was so obvious how well they fit together. They were like a lock and key, different but complementary in every way. There’s no denying the utter power they held as a couple.

Ari: I think my only critique for this book would be that I wanted to know more about Hephaestus’ familial backstory. I feel like it’s very clear that the events of Hephaestus’ childhood and his relationship with his parents made him question whether or not he was worthy of love, so I would’ve liked to have explored that maybe earlier on in the story instead of just addressing it at the end. Also, if you’re reading this R.M., can we maybe get a family tree drawn up? 👀 Mainly for the ✨aesthetics✨, but also for people with goldfish memories like Nick so they can see how all the characters are connected.

Nick: EXCUSE ME!! You didn’t have to mention my goldfish memory but fine. You’re not wrong. I would love a family tree and maybe even a fun character dictionary because it would help remind me and other readers of the different relationships between the characters.

Ari: Keep Me Close was a sexy, action-packed follow-up to R.M. Virtues’ debut novel and I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series. Dio and Athena are my children and friends-to-lovers is my favorite trope so I just know the next installment is going to have me in my feels! If you haven’t already boarded the Gods of Hunger train, then you better get yo tickets fast because this is one hell of a series that you are not gonna wanna miss out on!

Nick: Ugh yes. Give me the next book already. All in all, Keep Me Close was a terrific companion and it’s without a doubt the best bodyguard romance I’ve had the pleasure of reading. I know R.M. has big plans for this world and I simply cannot wait. With only two books, he’s proven what a phenomenal talent he is - HIS BOOKS OWN MY HORNY SELF. Y’all are going to need to read the Gods of Hunger series if you haven’t yet because they are god-tier (pun intended)! Or else I’m going to have to show up at your doors and with my loudspeaker!

Content notes: Sex trafficking, violence, guns, on-page sex, daddy kink

5 ⭐️ I'M SO IN LOVE WITH THIS BOOK

I reread it. I did it and I can't wait to do it again. I'm bumping it up to 5 stars because it deserves all the stars.
The first time I read this it took me longer than normal to read (cause of life stuff, not because I didn’t love it). I didn’t want to put it down, but I only had time to read 3-5 chapters at a time and it felt a little like I made this book (and myself) a disservice. This book is binge-read worthy, and by the time I wrote my review, I was already so exited for when I could just sit down again and reread it at a time when I knew I wouldn’t be as real-life stressed as I was that first time around. And it turns out that it took me longer to finish this time- go figure!

I'm still so in love with these characters. Aphrodite is the manager of the Pleasure District in Khaos Falls, and as such she is the most badass and baddest bitch around, and she knows it. She works tirelessly to provide a safe environment for sex workers, as well as rescuing and providing shelter and care to human trafficking victims. She is a wrench in the works of exploitative traffickers, and we open this book when someone puts a hit on her, and an assassin tries to kill her in her own club. Enter Hephaestus, recently promoted Head of Security for all of Khaos Falls, and although Aphrodite is far from his favourite person, he's tasked to guard her and keep her safe whilst investigating the threat on her life and finding out how such blatant security issue could have been possible in the first place. A series of spinning betrayals, a hot-as-all-hell steamy enemies to lovers relationship (the kinks in this book should be illegal, they’re THAT good - the hate sex included!), complicated family dynamics and disenchanted fairytales are just some of the amazing things you will find if you pick up this book.

My only complaint, which is more of a wish really, is that I wish we would have had a scene with Hephaestus actively working as a blacksmith. I understand that he has bigger responsibilities since he’s now part of Khaos Falls political structure but reading the part where he distracts himself by cleaning his weapons made me realize that we hadn’t really seen him in that comfort bubble, even though it’s mentioned often in the book. Blacksmith Hephaestus is hot, and I want more of him!

That being said, I am very much aware that this is me being extremely nit picky, and that is because this series is blowing my mind... This blows it out of the park while doing a home run, and a touchdown, and a slam dunk and every other sports metaphors that I do not understand, but know they mean you're just straight up killing it. And these books really are – killing it, finding it, loving it, steaming it… they are doing the most and I can’t wait for more.

After reading the first book in this series, I already knew I had found a new favorite author, but this really settled it for me. I went on and on about it on my review of Drag Me Up, but the representation and diversity imbedded right into the world building in this series is so fucking beautiful it makes me ache and longingly sigh like an old Victorian maiden, but `Fates be dammed` , I want to live right there amongst these characters. It’s just sad that the thing that makes me dreamily sigh the most in this book is the acceptance it shows to its characters - regardless of color, gender identity, sexual orientation, disabilities, or any other ‘otherness’ that our world has, unfortunately, managed to convince us means we are unable and unworthy of love, affection, care - and even being the fucking main character in our own stories! I will forever be grateful for books like this.

I don’t have a conclusion for this review because my conclusion would be to read it again and again until I can get my hands on the next one – It’s Dionysos and Athena and I cannot tell you how excited I am!

they hate fuck so obviously this is a 5⭐️ read

Genuinely adored this!! We have Hephaestus & Aphrodite, with a forced proximity/bodyguard situation. I was hooked from the first page honestly. The action was nonstop, and the smut was incredible. It does feature a kink I don’t personally love (she calls him daddy), but it’s written so well I didn’t even mind it haha. Just read this!!

3rd book for #TransRightsReadathon andddd I'm obsessed.

This was such a pleasant surprise! Disabled, demi Hephaestus & Black trans Aphrodite with bodyguard trope, believable hate to love romance, an interesting spin on Greek myth retelling, an action filled subplot...I was hooked. Loved how Hephaestus was competency porn™ with some interesting layers of insecurity due to his family history. Aphrodite didn't go full sunshine to his grump, which I appreciated, and was generally grounded/capable while also being optimistic/caring. I'm a romantic suspense girlie so I really appreciated the genuine danger and the strategizing in the thriller plot. Loved the contemporary/fantasy blend, all the diversity, the fast pace, how strong the side characters/family dynamics were. Just such a good time all around.

I do think this was a touch too long. Can't say I ever got truly bored but it felt a bit bloated. Also while I mostly enjoyed the sex scenes, they were a tad repetitive. I'm a hard sell on Daddy kink and while it didn't bother me, it also wasn't doing much for me after a certain point. (also, I selfishly wish there had been some "Hephaestus actively building things" scenes instead of just showing what he's already done).

Soooo clearly I need to go back and read the first book in this series....and also a bunch of other books by R.M. Virtues.

Before I even get started on my thoughts for this book, I just want everyone to know that if you're looking for an incredibly steamy book that begs of release coupled with off the charts character chemistry, then please do not sleep on the Gods of Hunger series by RM Virtues.

I'll be honest, I was biased when I went into this series because I am always looking for as much Hades x Persephone as possible without really caring about anyone else's story. Whew, was I wrong when it came to Hephaestus and Aphrodite.

Listen, I did not think that I was the one that would be cheering on hate sex, but Virtues has definitely made a clown out of me for thinking otherwise. The passion and chemistry between Heph and Aphrodite was off the charts.

But more than the smut (which is done so so well), the whodunit plot was really intriguing and showed us even more of Khaos Falls than what we experienced from Hades and Persephone; including the darker side of this world.

I honestly could just keep gushing about this series because it's that good. Plus, if you want a series that normalizes diversity (BIPOC, queer characters, disabilities, etc) then this series is for you.

mixed feelings on this one

While i've loved both of RM's novellas I read, the longer books have been a bit harder for me. I genuinely thought I would dnf this up until about 50%👀 i think this was mostly bc the beginning felt really slow, the action felt repetitive and the MCs were really antagonistic w/out having much ~vibes~ between them? I just felt like it could've been edited down a bit to maintain the story momentum.

Once we got to the sex scenes I was more on board, bc this baby has daddy kink and that almost always works for me😂 I also think it helped that at that point, we start to get a little more interiority from both Heph and Aphrodite?

Anyways I did finish this & overall enjoyed it, but the fact that it was so slow to start affected my feelings a bit. Not sure if I'll finish the series, but I defs want to read more of RM's work!

Content Notes: Hephaestus is a Black man with a degenerative muscle condition where his muscles slowly deteriorate, so he uses a cane. He runs security in Khaos Falls. Aphrodite is a Black trans woman, and runs the Lush district in Khaos Falls— not sure all of what that entails, but i do know that she runs essentially a sex club👌🏻 the book contains explicit sex, rough sex, daddy kink, and consensual sex work

Content Warnings: (taken from the front of the book) on page violence, physical violence, attempted murder, on page death, conversations around and about human trafficking (no sexual assault or violence within this topic on page, but the MCs are up against traffickers and so conversations surrounding trafficking are present albeit as vague as I could make them), guns, knives, bombs, ableist language (addressed on page).

I decided to pick this up after I saw the author on a livestream - how he spoke about romance intrigued me so I went in with high hopes for this. Also - I’ll be honest - all the Hades and Persophone retellings have been annoying me (because they all read the same) so I was intrigued by the choice to centre this on Aphrodite and Hephaestus. It’s not a pairing I’ve seen often in romance retellings.

I haven’t read Book 1 so there were some references and background which I didn’t follow (related to Hades and Persophone) but nothing too bad enough to hinder my enjoyment of this book.

The writing of the book was fine. Not particularly witty unfortunately but it was readable and clear. Not my favourite because I didn’t really feel a lot of the romantic tension between our two leads or a sense of chemistry. The book relied too much on sex to create the romance - which I understand for this sub-genre but it couldn’t completely remove the need for more conversation and connection between the leads.

Also the romance and the sex is a little too much on the “snarling” and insults, kissing replacing anger for my tastes. It makes sense for these characters who are kind of enemies - but the romance stays at this level a little too long for me.

I enjoyed the book - it was a bit slow reading for me in the first half. I liked the mystery set up which gave the plot more stakes than I was expecting. However, I think, the enjoyment of the book will hinge on how much the sex scenes will connect with the reader. All the furious sex was not to my taste. . There are some nice romance moments which kept me reading and the character work is well done. I wish we had gotten a little more of those moments - including with the family etc. I mostly loved the couple and the representation on page. Individually they are interested, fleshed out characters so it was a fun time to read about them. It was mostly the fact that I wasn’t convinced about the sex or romance which kept this book from being more highly rated for me.

3.5 stars in the end - with the ½ star added really because the context of this book was very different and worth supporting. Good value for money and worth picking up I think.

If it's one thing RM Virtues is going to do, it's writing a steamy book with all the feels.

This romance follows Aphrodite, leader of a territory and abolitionist of ring trafficking, as her life is put in danger and Hephaestus, leader of security in said region, is charged with being her personal bodyguard. They can't stand each other as they don't understand how the other person thinks and this causes a lot of friction as they try to do their jobs. At first, I wasn't really feeling anything between this couple and I was rather numb to all their little antics. However, by the end of the book I was smiling from ear to ear.

The romance in this book is an opposites attract kinda enemies to lovers bodyguard romance. We get to see how they get frustrated with the other and them have angry sex and how this slowly helps them care for one another until they reach the "oh shoot, I more than tolerate you" point.

I really enjoyed the way they cared for each other and how they slowly opened up to one another. Both of them came to understand and appreciate how the other thought and they were both able to develop as the story progressed. The sex scenes were also even better and more imaginative than the first book so wheeew.

Can't wait for the third book!

Original review: The Infinite Limits of Love

*I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher in exchange for an honest review.*

I reviewed this book with Nick and you can click the link above to read our complete review.

Back in April, Nick told me about a new release called Drag Me Up and said that I had to read it. So I did, and it became my first five-star read in over a year and my favorite read of 2021! It’s been a long ass time since a new-to-me author has completely swept me off my feet with their words so when I say that I am OBSESSED with Virtues’ storytelling, it is not to be taken lightly. 3,5 ⭐️ finally done with this book!

Slow slow start and hard to get into for me. I think I started to enjoy it halfway through. The ending was sweet tho :)

I enjoyed this one, but I think I made a mistake by not reading Drag Me Up first. There were definitely relationships and plot points that I didn’t fully understand lol. I’m just a sucker for bodyguard tropes (although I love a Persephone/Hades story too, so I’m sure I’ll like Drag Me Up).

Solidly steamy, and I really liked that the book included the characters discussing their needs to enjoy sexual encounters. I wasn’t 100% convinced of the daddy kink - it seemed just a little random - but I still enjoyed it. That’s a trope that can be kind of cringe in the wrong hands, but this book didn’t fall into that trap.

I think my issue with the story might’ve been fixed by me reading the first book too. I didn’t quite understand the hostility between Aphrodite and Heph at the start, but that might be a plot point from the first book. There were times they’d be yelling at each other that I thought came out of nowhere, but again that could totally be my fault. Like there was clearly backstory with Ares that I’d missed. There are a LOT of characters in this, which can get a little confusing to keep track of, but again that’s probs bc I’m a dummy who read the second book first.

This simply wasn't my book. I liked the overall plot with the danger etc. but the kink was not for me so I couldn't enjoy a lot of the book. Also I didn't like the way the relationship developed in the beginning. Felt fast. I just prefer slow development.

This came highly recommended by Tori from Novel Life and when I heard what it was about, I was sold.

Modern day greek gods, Hephaestus and Aphrodite retelling with disability and trans rep? Yes.

I thought the author was nice to give potential triggers before the story begins.

I didn't pick up book 1 and jumped right into this, the story begins in Greece with a bang as the main characters argue about how to stop a human trafficking ring. Shortly after both are attacked and they managed to defend themselves but the gods and goddesses of Khao Falls are shook. It might be a little confusing having not picked up book 1 as the world building took some thinking and reorienting eg what the districts are, what are the various greek gods and goddesses roles, is there a Mount Olympus?

Hephaestus "Heph" has scars on his face, neck and body and he walks with a cane as he has a degenerative muscular condition but he is bad-ass as the head of security. Aphrodite is transexual and proud that she build the Lush District after her father's failure. She is focused on giving healing and meaningful lives to the people she saves. They always lock horns because one is cool and the other is impulsive. Oh and Hephaestus is younger than Aphrodite which made that dynamic interesting too.

He has been the unwanted one for a long time, with his appearance and hiding in the shadows but Aphrodite is meant to be in the spotlight, beautiful and always admired by all, Heph calls her "princess". These two are like oil and water. And that is where the sexual tension comes in. The daddy kin part was weird because she is older. They like rough sex and at times, it felt uncomfortable to read like the first time they have sex and he finds pleasure in her gagging on his penis.

Aphrodite felt abit more human because she struggles to get wet when she is turned on. Romance often has one way and one way only which probably isn't true irl. Stress and health conditions can make this difficult for a woman.

I liked how he has found purpose despite his body's limitations. Throughout the book he experiences pain and aches in his legs and back if he pushes himself too much in work or sex. He also calls his condition a "disease" and has his own ways of dealing with it such as herbal remedies via vape. Heph has struggled with how he vies himself and his worth. I could empathise and appreciate the way he is written.

I didn’t like they together at first. It didn’t make sense as they are opposites and dislike one another so much. But the romantic thing is that they work and I liked seeing them have a sort of family by the end eg taking care of their adopted children, learning more about each other and doing everyday things outside of the heightened, dangerous situation they originally were in

The strong relationships between the male characters and especially Charon and Hephaestus was lovely to read. It is obvious that he is a mentor to Heph and the way they show each other love freely is wonderful because men are always told to be macho and no address their feelings.

The greek gods featured have different and similar relationships to the original myths. It was a little confusing There is people of colour rep too as Eros, Psyche and Achilles are of African descent. After finishing the book, I think majority of the characters are POC. I would liked to see other races like Chinese though.

Another difference is that while the author uses the Greek gods names and roughly their relationships. They don’t have powers and rely on their abilities and skills.

Something that I found inconsistent was the way the characters spoke especially Aphrodite. At times, she uses slang and shortened words that reminded me of the way African Americans speak but then at others, she enunciates the words and sentences. Not sure if this was intentional on the author's part. Other times, the characters conversations were not fluid and felt awkward. I needed to reread the dialogue a few times to catch what they meant.

Another down side to the book was that it felt draggy and repetitive. The characters keep having the same thoughts and words. The end was pretty predictable but maybe that is because I have been reading a lot of books that end up in the situation. But Aphrodite was strong and she saved herself. Wow. The way she handled those guns and the man. Respect.

But overall, it was fun to read about the Greek gods and to see Aphrodite and Hephaestus have a HEA since the original story is quite sad: they had an unhappy marriage and she cheated with Ares. Overall there is a lot of resentment. Great to see an own voices effort with this book as the author is poc and has a disability.

+ It weirdly took me a while to read this book, but it wasn’t because it was boring or had no plot. In fact, there was so much plot! Not only was there steamy sex and pages full of detailed romance, but there was crime and alternative plots tied into everything.
+ There was a few times I had to remind myself that this was an alternative story to the Greek mythology myths, but it didn't distract me too. If anything, it made me want Aphrodite and Hephaestus to be together even more! I loved how the author paired these too together and introduced the side characters too. This is the second book of a series - although it doesn’t need to be read in order - but keeping a lot of the characters in the mix from the first book made a lot of sense.
+ Persephone and Hades were the main couple in book one, and their lives with Aphrodite and Hephaestus just made sense. I also liked how the author explained surprising twists for the main couple in this book's lives. Like, not eveyrhting was just black and white. I wasn't expecting anything, and even when I thought something heroic or magical to happen, it didn’t. But instead, the author gave a way better alternative.
+ This book honestly had me on the edge of my seat every time I turned the page. It was nice to read a book that involved a well-known couple but explained their story in a more moderate and romantic way than compared to the original. I think I'll be reading the other books in this series, at least now, anytime soon, but I don’t regret picking up this book when I did.

- I kinda mentioned this at the beginning of my review, but it took me a long time to read this book. Not because it was long for me by any means, but I found my mind wandering at some parts of the book. It’s not that the plot lacked, but it just wasn’t really my cup of tea at the time when I first opened this book.

- The “Daddy” thing also got really annoying at times. Well, more like 85% of the time. Even when they weren't having sex, the author just always found a way to have Aphrodite call Hephaestus daddy. It was annoying and had me rolling my eyes or skipping sentences a lot.

Oh my Lord, waiting to read this book I’m just sorely disappointed in myself, smh. But, it is just as good as I expected.

This is Aphrodite’s and Hephaestus tale. So I enjoyed that this had the whole enemies to lovers vibe going on and I think the trope was done well here.

So this is a Greek mythology retelling, and here we have Aphrodite, who owns several pleasure clubs throughout this District that is run by Hades. And currently Aphrodite finds herself in some trouble when she goes up against a trafficking ring. this time she needs help and who is that help? well in comes Hephaestus. And he does not have time for Aphrodite’s inpatient ass. Hephaestus would rather move with a plan while Aphrodite doesn’t and this is where these two clash, but this latest ring that they attempt to break up is a snake with a head that they have to be careful about chopping off. with Aphrodite‘s life in danger and people around her that she can no longer trust… what happens when the least person she expects comes to her rescue?

Keep Me Close was just as good as the first book and I’m not even surprised by that because I think the author does an amazing job of writing these stories building these characters building this world that they are in and for me its not so much as seeing these two people who initially cannot stand one another struggle with their feelings, right We’re also getting their back stories. of their issues especially with their parents. Aphrodite has daddy issues and imo, she trusted people too damn much. Oh she was making some foul moves. I see why my guy was frustrated with her, lols. and with Hephaestus what we see even though he has the love of his uncle Hades, his father and his brothers around him (except Ares hating ass); we see that he still has to do grapple with what happened to him in his childhood; trying to build a relationship with his mother who wasn’t very nice to him because Zeus with his ol’ bitch ass. also we see where he at times has something to prove to people because in this book, he has a debilitating disability, and he never wants to seem weak around people, so we see in this book how both he and Aphrodite, kind of like struggle with themselves when they realize that this so-called hate that they have for one another turns out to be simmering fire and it was it was off the charts hot OK. The kink in this book was handled really well. Aphrodite seems to have a daddy kink and Hephaestus has no problem handling it for her. like his praise kink talk & dirty talk... Things that will make your heart flutter. OK it was so good. I just think as characters even though they had this friction in the beginning, they had good chemistry on page, like they made for a good couple. Their passion for keeping the ones they loved around them safe made for wonderful reading. Also, the story around sex work in this book was done in a way that didn’t feel like it was written to be demeaning, it was handled with grace and respect. The topic of human trafficking as handled with care too and I can appreciate that from this author.

But at the end of the hall, we have a story between Aphrodite and Hephaestus. And they were like lightning on page when they clashed, they clashed, and when they loved, they loved they were good together. It was great seeing the return of Hades, Persephone and the “brothers”.

This was another amazing addition to the God of hunger series, and I’m looking forward to reading the third book.

I’ve had a mixed experience with RM Virtues and wanted to give him another try. Unfortunately, this isn’t working for me. Aphrodite was so reckless that I was genuinely surprised no one had tried to kill her sooner. Meanwhile, Hephaestus proved to be not very good at his job. It was so obvious I also hated that Aphrodite tried to hit Heph during an argument; that’s partner violence and unacceptable. Why do so many authors allow their FMCs to hit their love interests?! Shouldn’t we be beyond this by now? It’s not okay. The pacing was all off on this and I did a lot of skimming before deciding to throw in the towel.

The author’s premises have so much promise and I wish he had better editing and copywriting so the stories could shine. There are so many odd punctuation choices, primarily with the use of dashes. Maybe that wouldn’t bother most people but it nagged at my editor brain every time, which means I was pulled out of the story a lot.

Characters: Aphrodite is a Black pleasure club owner; she's trans and pansexual per the author’s Instagram graphic. Hephaestus is a disabled demisexual Head of Security, metalworker, and former arms dealer. This is set in Khaos Falls.

Content notes: attempted intimate partner violence (FMC tried to hit MMC but he grabbed her hands to stop her), trafficking rings (victims were physically and sexually abused), murder, assassination attempts, physical assault, gunfire, knife wounds, bomb, chronic pain, MMC has a degenerative muscle disease and uses a cane, facial and body scars, MMC has less vision in one eye, ableism, toxic brother, past emotional abuse by MMC’s father, past shooting of MMC’s brother by their father (he survived), sex work (secondary characters), MMC doesn't know who biological father is (mom was pregnant when her parents arranged her marriage to Zeus), unsafe sex practices (no condom without discussion of STI prevention), normalized lube usage as FMC has difficulty getting wet, on page sex, Daddy kink, impact play, rimming, masturbation, alcohol, vape/medicinal blend, ableist language

This is a bodyguard romance and it’s the second book in the Gods of Hunger series. It is action-packed with Khaos Falls running into a lot of political turmoil, so if you’re not particularly up for suspense, twists & turns, maybe try a different book! If you’re a romantic suspense honey though, you may really enjoy this one!

I haven’t really read a satisfying enemies-to-lovers darker romance in a bit, but Aphrodite & Heph’s story had me drooling hahaha. Their forced proximity primes them for tons of hateful, infuriating banter, and then eventually, love 🥰 Since this is a Greek mythology contemporary retelling, you *expect* complicated and fraught family dynamics, and Virtues delivers those in spades.

I think Heph’s disability was written with so much care, as it wasn’t highlighted as anything “wrong” with him or that it “ruined his life,” but it was something to not be ignored because it was indeed an important, worthy part of his identity. I generally loved how he was so grumpy but eventually showed his softer side to Aphrodite. The smut was great, but those softer moments are what made me kick my feet into the air hahaha.

steam rating: 5 out of 5, be serious! 🥵 I am not a fan of the “daddy” kink but this was still fun & I loved the representation of the lube for Aphrodite & the thoughtfulness with which (and also this should be bare minimum behavior for IRL partners btw!!!) Heph was equipped with lube after?! 🥹

representation:
disabled, demisexual main character
pan, trans main character (both main characters are people of the global population🌎)

Trigger Warnings: sex trafficking, mentions of abuse, including parental abuse, violence.

For an erotic romance, "Keep Me Close" has a lot of plot, and I really enjoyed that aspect of the book. However, I was kind of annoyed by the romance, and ended up not enjoying this book as much as the first book in the series.

It's not that I didn't like Aphrodite and Hephaestus. Their dislike of each other made for some sizzling chemistry and the sex scenes were hot (but I was put off by the daddy kink, not gonna lie). The thing is not only were they so stubborn, it was annoying; their personalities are also pretty similar to Hades and Persephone (in the first book), so it was kind of like a rehash of the previous relationship, just with a new plot in the background, and a different trope.

I really enjoyed the dismantling of the sex trafficking ring plot, it was my favourite thing in the book, and I do prefer these kind of romances that have some plot besides the relationship/sex scenes.

However, as this is the second book in this series, I'm starting to feel the need of some explanation of the world, besides 'this is a country now ruled by Hades, divided by districts, one person is in charge of each district'. The world building has some holes, in my opinion, and it just feels disjointed while I'm reading. Perhaps other readers do not need any explanation of the world in their erotica, but I kind of do.

As of lately, I've been a big fan of Greek myths retellings and this one was great. I was roughly familiar with Haephestus and Aphrodite's story, but the plot stirs away from it and makes the book quite original and intriguing.
The author is obviously very talented and did a great job coming up with why Aphrodite needs protection and everything that stems from that. It was very much inventive and could keep you on the edge of your seat trying to figure it out yourself.
I did however struggle with a couple of things. The daddy kink kind of hit me in the face, I really wasn't expecting it. I think I struggled with it because I had pictured the characters to be on the older side and very much the same age. Which brings up my next point; The initial descriptions were sort of confusing to me because I started picturing everyone as visibly very old...
Something that I'll take the blame for instead is how much I struggled with all the characters' names. I'll chalk it up to English not being my native language and the fact that, had they been the Italian translation, I'd have been perfectly fine.
If you're a fan of long enough and explicit sex scenes, this might just be the one for you.

R.M. has done it again. He has created characters that stick with me even when I’m not reading the book. Washing dishes? Thinking about Hephaestus. Brushing my teeth? Thinking about Aphrodite. When I’m reading the Gods of Hunger books I feel like I’m reading a tv show. These characters are so palpable to me.

Keep Me Close is a bodyguard romance that starts with a bang. We are automatically thrown into chaos. First with Heph and Dite arguing and then with an attempted murder. Not only is this a bodyguard romance it’s ALSO enemies to lovers! There’s hate sex, daddy kink, a first kiss that comes after an argument, AND some of the sweetest tiny moments that mean everything.

If you haven’t read an R.M. Virtues book what are you waiting for??? They give you feelings and they’re steamy!

CWs violence, human trafficking, ablest language

3.5/5 (rounded up to 4/5) - I enjoyed this a bit more than the first in the series, even though the mystery part was very predictable. But I still liked how everything played out and I can't even tell you how much I enjoyed Dite ?!! That was so badass. I really liked the two main characters and the overall diverse representation in this book. I would have liked the two mc's tension and "hating game" stretch on a bit more, then see a slower progress of them getting comfortable with and falling for each other before the smut started but this is erotica, so I knew what I'd get and I'm not mad about it.
It would have gotten full 4 stars if it wasn't for the kink. That just made me feel a bit uncomfortable all the time.

I love this series and the whole Gods of Hunger world that Virtues built in these books. Greek mythology has never been something I've been particularly invested in, so I don't have the background knowledge that some readers would. It feels like Virtues doesn't rely on the reader to have that knowledge so the characters and world are fully developed. The tension between Aphrodite and Hephaestus was impeccable and when that tension finally cracked it was absolutely on fire. The romantic suspense element didn't quite hit for me because it did drag a bit in the first 1/3. The book opens with a bang, but then it felt like the mystery/suspense elements were just treading water for a while. It picked back up around the 1/2 way point, and I really enjoyed the way it all came together at the end.

AHHH! 😭 This series just keeps getting better & better!

Trans FMC, Disabled MMC. Hate to Love 🤭 bodyguard romance. She is such a badass wow I am obsessed with her! Running a district & 🌶️clubs while also rescuing women who are being tr@ff¡cked, which leads to her being in danger and needing a bodyguard 🫢 of course it had to be the man she can’t stand. The banter and back and fourth 😮‍💨 the way they got to know each other and took the time to accommodate FOR EACH OTHER!?? 😩😩 LOVEEEEDDD! For example the 🌶️🌶️🌶️!?? Yea he took CARE of her & oh yea there’s daddy k ¡ ñ K 👀The plot also kept me hooked! Also no third act breakup! And she saves herself 😌💅🏻
My only complaint is that I wish we got more info on their race/ethnicities just bcuz I feel like that’s always essential to a character & I don’t like guessing or leaving it up for interpretation 🫠
