For readers of Give Me Your Hand and Something in the Water , a gripping thriller set on the Greek Isles.

Liv has never been a woman with a lot of female friends, but when she meets fellow new moms Beth and Binnie in a Mommy and Me play group, she knows she's finally found her best friends for life. Together, the three of them embrace being new pulling together scrappy weekly dinners, sharing their favorite tips and tricks for caring for their kids, and trading in-jokes and references.

But then Binnie introduces Ange. Rich, beautiful, and capable, somehow, of doing it all, Ange changes the dynamics of their little group, and not for the better. While the others follow Ange's decorating tips for their new houses and move their scrappy dinners to expensive restaurants, Liv finds herself on the outside, scrambling to fit in with the people she could always be herself around. When Ange suggests a trip to Greece to celebrate their girl gang, Liv knows she has to go-even though her family really can't afford it-or be left out of the group for good. Once on the islands though, Ange makes it clear that trip or no trip, Liv will always be second string. As long as Ange is around, there's no returning to the way things were. But Liv wants her friendships back-and she'll do whatever it takes to make that happen.

Set over the course of a single, life changing trip to the Greek isles, Little Nothings is a gripping thriller about the dark side of female friendship, the competitive nature of modern motherhood, and the desperate ends one lonely woman will go to keep her friends close.

Promoted as being in a similar vein to Liane Moriarty's novels, Julie Mayhew's escapist psychological drama is a blend of a light and deliciously dark focus on women and their friendships, warped and toxic, with its underlying currents of spitefulness and meanness, and its heavy dollops of passive aggressiveness, cutting thrusts and machinations. Set on the apparently picture perfect Mediterranean holiday Island of Corfu, it is simultaneously a fun and entertaining well written book that goes back and forth in time. Liv Thomas is married to Pete and has a young daughter, she's a woman who has experienced a lifetime of loneliness and not fitting in with others, so when she forges a close tight knit friendship with 2 other mothers in similar circumstances, Binnie and Beth, whom she meets in a kid's play group, she is over the moon.

There are wonderful times with the friends and their families, their children, the establishment of their everyday routines of chats and gossip, dinners together, sharing advice and tips, and their common in jokes and humour. However, all this is threatened with the entry of Ange into their friendship circle as she shakes up the group dynamics with a move towards a more exclusive and expensive lifestyle that is beyond Liv and her family's financial constraints. Liv once again starts to feel like an outsider, she cannot afford to keep up, and is she imagining Ange's antipathy towards her? It all becomes more twisted, fraught and suspenseful when all the families go on what is meant to be a fun 3 week holiday to Corfu that is far beyond Liv's means, in her efforts to save the friendships that mean so much. Where will it all end?

This is a great summer read, loaded with its vibrant drama, an engaging compulsive character driven novel on the complexities of belonging and identity, which documents Liv's journey when it comes to friends. I found myself turning the pages as fast as I could, getting caught up in all the intrigue and games, all the 'little nothings', wanting to know what will happen with the friends, a real 'nest of vipers'. Many thanks to the publisher for an ARC.

Liv has always been an outsider until she meets Beth and Binnie at a playgroup and she feels she has bonded and found friends for life. They have a comfortable and easy friendship until Binnie Introduces Ange and then things change and oh, how they change. When Ange suggests a three week family holiday to Corfu Liv knows they can’t miss out despite the fact they cannot afford it or she’ll be an outlier again as the cult of Ange takes over. The novel is set in the three weeks on Corfu and Liv narrates the fun and games.

‘Squeal piggy, squeal’ well this little piggy is squealing ‘read it, read it’ as this is a face off you won’t want to miss!! It’s extremely well written and so much so that you glide through the book. The characterisation is excellent though it’s not easy to like them it’s riveting to watch the push and pull of the group dynamics. There is one character they meet on the island who is so enigmatic and magnetic she kind of steals the book and is a good contrast to another you just want to punch! There is some superb character reptilian imagery which not only suits the people but matches the the island surroundings.

At the beginning some observations make me laugh they’re so deliciously darkly funny but as the novel progresses it becomes much more intense as we witness the cost of the prize of friendship and the reader has a poolside seat for the shenanigans. Some scenes are so vivid and colourful they feel cinematic as they appear before your eyes . As time goes on Liv becomes more self-aware and as she wakes up the pace of the storytelling also ramps up as does the tension as it’s almost like mortal combat. Some of the dialogue especially towards the end is like a verbal tennis match, each ace delivered with a saccharine smile that masks the devilish intent.
Sit back and watch in horrified fascination as the barbs hit home. It builds to a really good ending and it’s one of those reads you want to know the outcome but you equally don’t want to finish reading.

Overall, this is a very good psychological character driven thriller centring on friendship and navigating that minefield as it becomes increasingly and dangerously competitive.

Highly recommended .

With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Bloomsbury Publishing PLC, Raven for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.

Liv is a woman that has always struggled to make friends and maintain friendships. It's not that she doesn't want them it's more that she always feels awkward or not quite worthy of their attention. Until she meets Beth and Binnie. These two ladies have embraced her and all her quirks with no questions asked. She finally feels like she belongs and after nearly a decade of friendship they are still tight as ever.

Until. Dun. Dun. Dun.

Ange.

Binnie meets Ange and insists on how much they will like her. She's funny, spontaneous, and a hell of a good time. Liv is leery but Binnie insists and before she knows it they have become a group of four doing everything together. The problem is that Liv and her husband don't have the same money as the others and her need to belong has them running up a debt they can't possibly repay. When Ange plans a three week trip to Corfu for all the families to attend Liv knows that they can't afford it but Ange insists on paying for them no strings attached. Or so Liv thinks.

"Keep your friends close and your enemies closer."

Pop that popcorn, slather on that butter, pour a beverage of your liking and sit back to witness an unforgettable battle between so-called friends. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. All the barbs and snide comments masquerading as care and concern had me riveted. My hatred for Ange growing more and more with every turn of the page. It's been awhile since I've read a toxic female friendship story and this one was done masterfully and the Corfu setting had me as intoxicated as the characters in this novel - minus the hangover, of course! 😉 SO. MUCH. FUN!!! 5 stars!

Little Nothings is when small slights turn into larger issues.

Liv, her husband and daughter, plus three other families, are excited to commence their three-week vacation in Greece. Dubbed the “Liv and Pete Comeback Tour” by their friend Ange, the couple hopes this holiday will be the reset they desperately want.

Despite Ange being the newest friend to the group, she has become the ring leader, with everyone doing the most to please her. Initially, Liv was able to ignore the polite little jabs that Ange threw at her, but slowly they have become more difficult to brush off.

Liv wants her friend group to return to simpler times before Ange came along. The only problem is that everyone is still under Ange’s thrall. Liv has never had close friends before, so she’s hesitant to let these ones go.

I don’t think I would label this as a thriller. It’s more of a domestic drama with a few thriller elements near the end. The timeline alternates between the past and present.

I nearly DNF’d this multiple times. There are many characters, and most of them are unlikeable. The women come across as entitled, judgemental, and the queens of petty. And most of the men are classic dudebros. Ange and Liv were the most well-developed characters. The rest were rather bland.

I am glad that I finished it because the ending picked up and was quite thrilling.

I recommend if you enjoy slowly paced domestic dramas with some suspense.

I’m sure most of you can relate to the feeling of waking up each morning lately and motivating yourself to get out of bed with the mantra . . . .

When I get that feeling, there’s only one surefire way to turn my frown upside down . . . .

And what better way to do that than a fictional trip to the Greek Isles!

That’s just what Liv plans on doing in Little Nothings. Although on the brink of financial ruin, Liv, the hubs, their daughter and a whole gaggle of other families all whisk away on a fab getaway. The others are all used to this sort of lifestyle, but Liv has been just trying to keep up with the Joneses for quite some time. Over the course of the trip it becomes crystal clear that no matter how much Liv tries to fake it ‘til she makes it, she will always be an outsider . . . and that’s just not acceptable.

This was another brain candy selection and another round of turning my pasty chub into a more palatable tan chub for the summer. If only I had a schmancy drink with an umbrella to imbibe whilst I was reading. I really need to work on getting a butler.

Oh, and I may gripe incessently about my dislike of face/people covers, but this one is an exception to the rule. I want to go to there.

Sry to say DNF at 20%. This was very like Housewives of New Jersey. The constant chatty dialogue was annoying and it didn’t seem to be going anywhere I’d want to follow.

This was like a 3 week long high school drama filled vacation.

We follow the main character, Liv's, pov. She's never really had many friends, but when she meets Beth and Binnie they create an airtight bond, or so she thought. When Ange is introduced into their group Liv now feels on the outs and she can't keep up. Her and husband, Pete, struggle financially, so when Ange offers to pay for their trip to Greece she agrees for fear of missing out. Who would take out a handout like that? Crazy!

There was too much drama and finger pointing cattiness for my liking. Also, it seemed the story jumped around at times leaving it hard for me to stay engaged because it took me a minute to figure out what time period we were in.

I was lucky enough to both read and listen to this one. Louise Williams did a fine job narrating, but she made Liv sound like a bratty teenager at times. 8 hours and 38 minutes and easy to follow along at 2x.

Thank you Bloomsbury Publishing for sending me a copy of this book to review.

If you are looking for drama look no further , this is the book for you. It sounds like it might be a thriller but I would put it in the catergory of pyschological drama. It is told by 1 main character Liv who was the character I connected most with. Lots of unlikeable characters. A character driven story rather than an action one. It features fractured relationships and friendships. It is set in a beautiful exotic location. It has long chapters and it is a slow burner. If any of these appeal to you please check it out.

I loved this book and devoured it in one sitting, I was determined to know how it ended. The writing style was great and the characters are so well written and relatable and leave you thinking about them long after the pages are over. I was captivated by its deviousness and suspense. I loved it.

Liv has spent her life on the outside looking in, always hoping to be part of the gang but never quite achieving it. Then after the birth of her daughter she meets Beth and Binnie. At long last she finds friendship and starts to see what she’s been missing.

But then a new woman infiltrates the group: Ange. Confident, rich, empathetic, they all love her and quite quickly can’t imagine their friendship group without her. It’s the perfect foursome and when Ange suggests that they all have holiday together with all of their families, they jump at the chance.

But on a sun drenched Greek island, cracks begin to grow and it quickly becomes apparent that this is toxic friendship at its best. The question is, what will Liv do about it?

A fantastic holiday read, filled with backstabbing and bitchiness. The descriptions of the island were serene and beautiful - in perfect comparison with the insidious goings on between Ange and Liz. I raced through this, intrigued and gripped. Perfect for summer!

A struggle to finish this toxic friendship chatty chatty story. I wasn’t invested in the story and I only finished it because I needed to know how it ended, I wish I hadn’t bothered to be honest.

It’s an incredibly slow burner and had almost no impact on me, except annoyance. Not for me.

After reading the synopsis and obsessing over the cover for Little Nothings, I knew hitting the request button was a "need" to read and not just a "want" . I had to have this book! It sounded so juicy and dramatic that my fingers instantly crossed.

All of the build up and anticipation led to exceeding my already high standard.

I am a little embarrassed to admit that this was my first time hearing about Julie Mayhew BUT after I concluded Little Nothings, I immediately went to amazon and downloaded one of her previous books, The Big Lie, and I am super excited to start it!

The first half of this book is fast paced and character driven. The complexity of the relationships all of these women have with others plus each other was intense and SO dramatic (LOVED IT!!) .

As I was reading I could picture these women in my head and it reminded me of the reality series The Real Housewives of New Jersey (I am also from NJ so I loved this connection!)

There is plenty of suspense to keep you on your toes and has many twists you will not see coming.

I thoroughly enjoyed Little Nothings and I believe you will too!

Liv is happily married to Pete and they have a young daughter. She has never had a lot of female friends and has experienced a lifetime of loneliness and a feeling of not fitting in with others, until she meets Beth and Binnie at a music playgroup. She feels like they have bonded for life and that she finally belongs and can be herself amongst her two new friends

Until

Binnie introduces to the group, glamorous and wealthy Ange, she insists how much they will like her, she is funny and great fun to be around and before they knows it, they have become a group of four doing everything together.

The problems arise when Ange plans a three week break in Corfu for all the families to attend. Liv knows they cannot afford to go but Ange insists on paying for them and Liv is desperate not to miss out.

However whilst away they may appear to be a group of friends enjoying their well deserved break, but look closer and you can see that Ange is very controlling and manipulative of her friends. This is a toxic friendship and Liv once again starts to feel like an outsider, she cannot afford to keep up and is she imagining Ange's antipathy towards her?

A brilliant book full of drama that kept me engrossed.

Little Nothings - Julie Mayhew

The first book I've read by this author. I was drawn to it by the blurb making comparisons to Liane Moriarty and Louise Candlish, two of my favourite authors.

The story of Liv, her husband Pete and Liv's friends Beth, Bennie and Ange. The four families are on a luxury three week holiday in Corfu. What could possibly go wrong?

It's about loneliness, friendships turning toxic and Liv's struggle to fit in.

The writing style is wonderful, chatty, gossipy and bitchy between friends, and slipping into an introspective melancholy veering towards desperation with Liv's memories, thoughts and feelings. There are some real flourishes and lots of very distinctive and memorable lines

The comparison to Liane Moriarty is justified, that fun, chatty style with darker undercurrents and trust me, there are plenty of sharp corners in this novel. This is the closest I've read from a British author, and Liv's introspective memories, tinged with the desperation to fit in really makes it stand out in its own right.

I loved it, I found it highly entertaining and compulsive reading. I found the ending a little bit abrupt, but then I could have happily carried on reading about Liv and her friends forever.

Highly recommended and a real joy to read.

That feeling when an ARC completely exceeds all your expectations! This book was SO GOOD - filled with many of the tropes and components I love: feminine rage, woman vs. woman drama, perfect pacing and reveals, all set on a beautiful island vacation.

It focuses on Liv, our main character, a thirty-something wife and mom to a young girl. Since she was a kid, she's never been part of a friend group, never had sleepovers, never felt that feeling of having inside jokes and belonging. She thinks that this is how it'll always be - she just can't make friends and is destined to be on her own. But one day, she joins a Mommy & Me class and instantly becomes friends with two other moms, Beth and Binnie. They bond over a weird class instructor, then start to grab coffee together, which turns into drinks, dinner parties, book clubs, and the three of them becoming inseparable. Beth and Binnie even throw Liv and her husband Pete a little wedding celebration that becomes the glue cementing their best friendship.

But one day, Beth brings one of her coworkers along for drinks. Angela Addison, or Ange, is a fellow real estate viewing agent, and Beth vows that the girls will love her. At first, they do - she is funny, charming, and sophisticated, providing all the right connections, resources, and planning to make her insertion into the group seamless and worthwhile. Slowly but surely, though, Liv begins to notice that some things are off with Ange. In fact, Liv notices that Ange is wheedling her way into the group and pushing Liv out at the same time. Liv and her husband face financial difficulties, unlike the rest of the group, and Ange insists on bringing their girls dinners from casual affairs on each others' living room floors to fancy restaurants on the high street. They all get manicures together as a required part of their bonding, which Liv increasingly can't afford. Liv knows that Ange is planning events and hang-outs with Beth and Binnie and excluding her - but Beth and Binnie hardly even notice.

The book takes place at the culmination of the unspoken tensions between Ange and Liv, on an all-out Greek island vacation that Ange planned for all of their families. Everything starts normally, but through flashbacks and memories, you slowly learn about Ange's insidious plotting and perfectly horrible slights towards Liv. Mayhew executes these so well - they're little things that can go unnoticed by the others, but not by Liv: she knows the feeling of being left out intimately, and you can see Ange's cunning seeping through all of her actions.

The pacing, reveals, and rising tension in this book are simply flawless. I hate using this word, but as soon as you're in the thick of learning about the dynamics in the friend group, it's simply unputdownable. I was about 15% in when I last picked it up, and I didn't put it down again until I was done at 1 AM last night. There's something about a woman vs. woman, friend group thriller that's absolutely enthralling to me, and Mayhew nails it. The characters are perfectly developed, the plot is simple yet so intricate, and the rising drama between Liv and Ange is captivating. You can't wait to see who comes out on top and how it all unfolds.

Book Rating: 3/5
Audiobook Rating 5/5

I apparently made the mistake of reading the synopsis of Little Nothings by Julie Mayhew and went into it thinking it was going to be a thriller. I don't know who decided to call it that, but to me, it wasn't a thriller at all. This story is more like a reality TV show about female friendship filled with lies and betrayal, with a dash of thrill at the end. I do think Mayhew did a great job of showing the intricacies of friendship between women, and all of the little barbs and lies that can make them toxic. Especially if you have a bad apple in your group of friends. There is plenty of drama throughout, as well as some domestic suspense aspects, and for the most part, it focuses on Liv's friendship with the other women and how awful Ange is.

The biggest surprise for me came from the ending, and I found myself being very shocked at the way Liv acts. I don't think I really liked any of the characters, but that just upped the drama factor and I think if you love the Housewives franchise, there is a good chance you will enjoy Little Nothings. The audiobook for this was really what kept me interested (besides the drama of course since I always love that), and Louise Williams was absolutely smashing as the narrator. Her narration never faltered, and the entire audio was very well done, so I highly recommend listening to the book. There wasn't a whole lot about motherhood in the book either and I feel like the synopsis was way off besides noting the friendship angle, so please take it with a grain of salt. Even though this was a middle-of-the-road read for me, I would definitely consider reading another book by Mayhew.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Little Nothings is a story about the dark side of female friendships - critiques disguised as compliments, character assassinations disguised as concern, and all those little nothings that can be waved away until they accumulate into something big.

Our narrator, Liv, is on the outs of her inner circle. As the story progresses in real-time and in flash-back, we witness her rise and fall from social graces, and her re-evaluation of her friendships. Was that offhand comment a show of support or a toxic dig? Why do I not understand that in-joke? Why is my best friend trying to destroy me?

In the present timeline, we join Liv on a trip of a lifetime. Four families holidaying together on a Greek island for three weeks of sun, drinks, and re-connection. Of course, nothing is as it seems, and the author slowly unravels layer upon layer of tension, condescension, and apprehension.

I enjoyed the alternating timeline, and found Liv’s perspective to be challenging and engaging. There were times when I found myself debating how reliable she really was. Were these microaggressions really occurring or were they all in Liv’s head? Is she a victim of gaslighting or is she gaslighting me as a reader? The complexity of the protagonist is what propelled the story and had me turning the page.

Perfect for a beach read, I would suggest this book to anyone who enjoyed Big Little Lies, Mean Girls, or A Simple Favour.

I was intrigued by the overall premise of this and was excited to receive the arc. I devoured the first 75% or so. I liked the character-driven plot and the intricacies of the relationships explored. The dual time periods worked well in creating a plethora of suspense. I did find the writing to be a bit choppy at times, though, and the transitions between time periods were awful. It just went from one sentence to the next with no indication of a change beforehand, which was jarring and confusing. The chapters were also super long and contained multiple time periods. It would’ve worked better had there been more chapters and clearer transitions. I realize that this was an arc so maybe the actual book will be better. I also wasn’t totally thrilled with the ending. I felt like it was a little underwhelming and didn’t have much of a wow factor that would’ve made it a 5 star book. Still, a worthwhile, interesting and entertaining read.

The first 75% was really a slow burn psychological drama rather than a thriller, but I was so intrigued. A fascinating character study that concentrates on a warped and toxic friendship group with so much pettiness, passive aggression, and downright meanness. It really was quite deliciously awful.

The latter 25% picked up the pace and became more like the thriller that was promised but unfortunately falling short of the tension that had been built. The plot felt like it was beginning to spiral out of control, to then abruptly stop with an underwhelming, and ultimately unsatisfying ending.

Overall entertaining but a little disappointing.

Wow, this was such a good read. I started it Saturday afternoon and by time I went to bed I’d read over three quarters of the book. I don’t find books like this often, and reading most of it in one sitting is a measure of how much I enjoyed this book. It is about friendships, how toxic they can be without you realising and what you will do to fit in and ‘belong’. I loved the writing style, the story setting and could picture some of the scenes in my mind. Most of the characters were likeable and very believable although there were a few I didn’t really take to. I think this is a very well written, nicely paced and engaging read which had my attention all the way through. I’d definitely like to read some of the authors other books and would recommend this if you like psychology thriller reads.

I was intrigued by the premise of Little Nothings. Liv meets two other mums - Beth and Bennie - at a local playgroup and then Ange joins their friendship circle. The mums, their husbands and children go to Greece at Ange's suggestion. But how important are Liv's new friendships to her?

I loved the character-driven plot and the intricacies of the relationships explored. A devious tale with mountains of suspense, the dual time periods work well for the overall tone. A very worthwhile, highly toxic read.

I read a review comparing this author to Patricia Highsmith which made me extremely anxious to read the book. However, the elegant PH touch was missing for me. Although there was character development my problem was that I just didn't care what happened to any of them. I was interested enough to finish the book but is was a disappointment for me.

What a great psychological thriller surrounding a group of friends!
Liv met her closest female friends at the same baby group years before and they've stayed in each others lives since so when Besr friends Binnie brings Ange into this tight circle things start to change. The dynamics quickly change with Liv feeling on the outside plus Ange is super rich so the pot roast dinner parts quickly turn into find dinning. The only good thing Ange suggests Is trip for the group and their families, except this tholiday is way out of Livs budget but when Ange offers to pay things start looking up or do they?

I really enjoyed this book I found myself wanting to know what the twist was going to be. I didn't even understand the title until I sat and reflected abd realised it was a build up little thing that to others looked like nothings it's very cleverly done as we read from Liv's pov we see things how she does.
It was interesting to read hoe female dynamics change when a new person is added to the group the way Ange beelined to push out Liv was fascinating, I just wanted to know why!!!

I found all tye ladies quite interesting and I really enjoyed being part of Liv's journey even if it was hard for her. Easy to see how small things can segregate you from your entire friendship group and isolate you completely. The holiday was great as we got to see a more wild side to Liv and also two of the other friends were being to see what was going on. As I read I questioned whether or not Liv should forgive Binnie if Ange ever gets caught out. I couldn't help but think I would never speak to her again. But that's just me, you'll have to read yourself to find out what actually happens.

The prose is written extremely well and made the text easy to follow. The scenery was described really well and made the story come alive, I found especially with their running club

Would I recommend yes completely, lmalthiugh if you enjoy psychological therapy this might be a a bit slow but I promise it speeds up. 4*

Liv, a woman who has never fitted in, never been part of a group, never had any friends moves to a small village where she suddenly becomes fast friends with Beth and Binnie, two parents in the kids' playgroup. They meet regularly, for coffee, for lunch, for dinner, for gossip, and all is well. Liv finally feels she Belongs. She's been accepted, and she loves it. Then along comes Ange, wealthy, brash, opinionated and the group of three becomes four. Ange is a manipulator, an organiser, a fixer. She takes over the group and organises just about everything and the other three love it. She suggests a holiday on the island of Corfu for all of them, husbands and kids as well, and off they go, into the heady atmosphere of the Mediterranean for three weeks of fun and frolics....or is it?

There isn't one likeable character, not one. Personally I couldn't stand Liv, with her whingey-whiny neediness, but that aside there's a flatness to the characters. Many of them are superfluous, adding nothing to the story– Beth and Binnie's husbands and kids don't provide anything but padding, likewise members of the extraordinarily rich family, guests at the same hotel. There's a great deal of irritating hopping back and forth, with flashbacks about how the women became friends, the financial strains, the emotional ups and downs etc. Most of it is confusing, not helped by the strange Kindle format which has no visible breaks, or font change, to indicate these flashbacks. Add to this the confusion when some names are not Capitalised, and many sentences don't begin with a capital, which makes reading this quite tricky at times.

This is all a bit silly – enjoyable to a certain extent, but nonetheless, silly.

This is light froth, suitable for the deckchair if we ever get a sunny day, and instantly forgettable.

SUMMARY:
This is the story of Liv, a self professed introvert who has trouble making friends. So when she becomes a mother and develops close friendships with two other moms (Beth and Binnie), she’s truly happy for what might be the first time in her adult life. Then along comes Ange, who threatens her position in the group. A multi-family trip to Greece brings all the tension to a head - but just how far will Liv go when she’s pushed??

PROS and CONS:
A great cast of characters (aside from Beth and Binnie being thoroughly interchangeable in my mind) - lonely Liv, manipulative Ange, a charismatic stranger - a small resort with big personalities. Trouble is only one cocktail away from boiling over - I wondered how much was real, how much imagined. This is very well written but sort of like a wreck that you know you shouldn’t be watching but simply cannot look away.

READ IT?
I hadn’t heard of this author before this one, but she’s very talented and I’ll certainly try another one!
