Horror Stories is a ghastly collection of tales, full of odd surprises and gruesome occurrences.
Prepare to meet a deranged killer with a taste for autopsy, an eccentric stalker who’s been following a victim for decades, a sectioned professor who lost his mind after witnessing an atrocity in the jungle, and much more.
If you yearn for macabre horror, your search is over. Horror Stories is here to deliver. Get ready to be chilled, disturbed and shaken to your very core.
His stories cross the boundaries of horror, sci-fi, and sci-fi horror. An absurdist at heart, Flynn’s tales are told through a lens of darkness, highlighting the many paradoxes and predicaments that come attached to human existence.
James Flynn’s stories have been compared to those of the hit TV series, The Twilight Zone, due to their eeriness and atmospheric nature.
Flynn's work has appeared in Black Petals Magazine, Yellow Mama Magazine, The Scare Room Podcast, Weird Mask Magazine, Literary Yard, Sugar Spice Erotica Review, Patty's Short Stax Anthology, Local Haunts Anthology, Lurking in the Dark Anthology and Alien Buddha Press.
Flynn’s latest release is the Exodus of Evil trilogy.
This is actually my third read by Flynn and I continue to enjoy his stories. Definitely one of the more auspicious genre finds amid the kindle freebies out there. So many promise dark psychological scares, but Flynn actually provides those. There’s a splendid demented quality to his writing, you can just imagine the maniacal glee sparkling in his eye as he turns out tales of writers who’ll do whatever it takes for success and heartrending (in oh so literal way) family stories and more. This (seemingly permanently free on Kindle) book is tiny, just over 100 pages and that’s including the preview of the author’s novella Swarm, so a very quick read and well worth it. Genre fans, check this guy out. Flynn is tapping into the dark corners of the mind just right. Definitely an author to watch. See what he dreams/nightmares up in the future.
James Flynn’s stories are imaginative, beautifully written with fully fleshed out characters, and chilling. His antagonists are not cardboard cutouts but some even inspire pity for what drives them to do horrible things.
The bottom line is that Flynn has written stories that transcend the horror genre into true fully realized literature. I look forward to reading more of his work.
James Flynn has shared some of his short stories for free on Amazon Kindle. I had heard two read out on Youtube previously, in one a childhood prankster watches the bodies pile up with concern and the other transmits parasitic despair through the eyes.
First story: Very creative in its concept, but I questioned some of its feasibility near the end. Don't play mean pranks on people! Or drug them!
Second story: How far are you willing to go for your art? Not this far, I hope. A writer becomes a killer as a promotion for his book. This, once again, has a bit of a strange ending. (Still my favorite, though)
Third story: Basically, a father is not coping well with his son's death. Or, like, at all. My least favorite story. And the dullest. Still not terrible, though.
Fourth story: Extremely disturbing. Warnings for psyche wards, parasites, and eye gore (which I'm particularly sensitive to). Some things are just too horrific for the human eyes to percieve without going crazy.
Overall, this was a great collection. The writing was on point, and some honest creativity was displayed here.
This one gets 2.5 stars- It’s serviceable, decent entertainment in a super small package making it a super quick read. Kind of like eating a 3 Musketeers candy bar, enjoyable enough in the moment but ultimately not a memorable experience, especially when there are plenty of other great options to satisfy your horror loving sweet tooth.
I really like the fact that these stories are not the usual ho hum variety! They are refreshing and not an old rerun of old stories with characters names that are about the only difference. I really enjoyed thus book and will definitely recommend to those who may not want to immerse themselves in a full fledged novel but like a scary read just before the lights go out!
James Flynn has a very disturbing imagination. While I don’t know where his stories originate, I can say that the stories are also disturbing and very entertaining. My favorite was “Guilt Trip” as it shows the result of two guys sending a third guy on a trip without his consent or even his knowledge. To say more would reveal spoilers that I prefer not to reveal.
Buy the book in ebook form (as I did) and check it out!
I just had two of the short stories from this book in audiobook forms. I’d definitely like to read/listen the rest. I’ll update if I get around to it.
Guilt Trip and The Soul Destroyer. They were very good.
The Soul Destroyer was about a man who saw a traumatic event in the jungle. He was kept in an asylum with his head covered because he could “hurt” people. An investigator interviews him for his story.
Guilt Trip is about a trick a couple kids play on their friend high on acid. How does this go array? You’ll need to read it to find out.
I enjoyed all these stories. I especially enjoyed the story about the hospital that was abandoned but had patients that had been kidnapped by an insane doctor who kept them drugged. It only became obvious when the investigator saw the doctor at home with his long dead wife that he treated as though she was still alive.
This is a mixed bag. "Guilt Trip" is too unbelievable. "Be Careful What You Wish For" is OK. "Deadly Dispossession" and "The Soul Destroyer" both have a few problems, but have some great elements of horror. "Soul Destroyer" is the best of the lot.
Well written and paced. More of a refined set of horror stories so if your expecting quick scares you will be disappointed. I enjoyed it and would recommend for anyone who likes short horror stories.
I love how Flynn's warped (literary) mind works! These were delightfully-twisted, fast-paced, thrilling and addictive reads, that I found I did not want to put down! Your TBR list NEEDS everything James Flynn in it!
I've read quite a range of horror stories lately, but Mr. Flynn's Horror Stories really had me on edge. Excellent build up of tension and creepiness along with very descriptive characteristics to the plot. Overall, a writer I will continue to read and follow. Thanks for the chills!!
Strange and disturbing tales that are almost Lovecraftian. Not a large book so I soon whizzed through them. A couple were predictable but there were a couple of good stories in there. A good read.
