Rabbit and Bear #5

Rate this book

After reading a pretty intense book (Notes on a Scandal - highly recommended), I felt as though I needed something lighter. Rabbit and Bear were sure to not disappoint. They are quite an odd couple, different in many ways, but that is also what seems to make their friendship work.
This is the fifth book in the series, and although I have loved the ones before this, I think this one has perhaps the most powerful message for children so far.

An icebear has come to their valley, and sadly he isn't very nice. The animals don't know what to do, but there is the suggestion that if they had the help of Wolf, they may have a chance. Only thing is, Rabbit made sure that Wolf wasn't allowed to stay (he has a tendency to try and eat people for breakfast). For once, Bear doesn't know how to help the situation, so Rabbit decides that he has to be the one to try and help put things right.

As with all of the books from this series, there is the usual charm and humour. Jim Field's illustrations are the perfect addition, as always, bringing the characters superbly to life. I really do love their slightly crazy little world, and I don't mind admitting it, even if I am slightly older than their target market.

'Hmm. Kannst du mir was anhaben? Mich töten? Mich fressen? [...]

Rabbit is having a bad dream, but when he wakes it has come true – Fox has nearly swallowed him!
Rabbit does what Rabbit always does – runs to his best friend Bear, who is not only much bigger than Fox, but very good in sorting out problems.

Soon, however, there is a problem too big for even Bear to help with. Someone even bigger than Bear has arrived, announced himself King and taken over the valley. What are Bear, Rabbit and their friends going to do?

Bear does have an answer, but it involves Rabbit doing the right thing. This hasn’t been Rabbit’s strong suit in the past, but he grits his teeth and sets off to the Dark Woods where he must make an apology – without being eaten first.

Fox is his destination and as foxes are famous for, Fox has a very cunning idea indeed. With nothing but a few leaves and some bendy sticks, Fox’s plan is ready. But is Rabbit, Bear, tiny Vole and the others? Can they really face the so-called King?

Rabbit’s trademark cheek and Bear’s patience and kindness isn’t going to work this time! These animal buddies have met their match. Rabbit must face his fears, eat humble pie and then face even bigger fears again. Working together is the key, and inclusion, kindness and sharing are the lessons Rabbit learns this time.

Jim Field’s illustrations bring all this action to life, and the section in the Dark Forest, is exactly that – dark! The page design of grey text on black pages is fantastic, portraying Rabbit’s fear and the tension as the animals plan to defeat their foe. Shadow work plays a large part in Fox’s plan and drawn brilliantly to show it. I’m sure the illustrator had lots of fun with shadow play on walls, to get this just right!

A Bad King is a Sad King is another funny episode of this perfect pair of friends – Rabbit (cranky, rude and this time brave) & Bear (kind, calm, helpful and thankful too as Fox comes to everyone’s rescue). There’s even a wee nod to Climate Change as one animal has left their normal habitat to take over another.

When a mean old Icebear moves into the valley and claims it is now his kingdom and they must all be his servants, Bear tries her best to work out the misunderstanding with kindness. But what happens when the tyrant is still there and all Bear's kindness tricks haven't worked?

Bear is a wise soul. I love that her first response is to try and talk things out, and how even in the midst of less than ideal circumstances she still can help everyone see how badly hurt someone must have been to have reached a place that the Icebear is in. I also like that Rabbit seems to have finally let some of Bear's advice sink into his heart, and instead of relying on Bear to do the hard part does it himself. The animals get a lesson in how to face their fears, to stand up to a bully, but also approach him with a touch of compassion in their hearts thanks to Bear's insights. It's fantastic advice, and a fabulous story. The illustrations on every spread help bring the story to vivid life for the readers, and help keep those pages turning quickly. Highly recommended.

Notes on content: The Icebear is very mean and even poops in one animal's hole on top of the animal's head. There's danger that various animals may eat others, but everything works out peacefully.

An adventure of two friends, Rabbit and Bear and their friends. They discover that the wolf isn’t always a bad guy who wants to eat them. However, the Ice Bear is a mean polar bear who wants to steal their home from them and Wolf has a plan.
Jim Field’s illustrations are fabulous as ever and perfect in characterising all the animals in this wonderful book 5 of the ‘Rabbit and Bear’ series. It is funny, warm, emotional and ends on a positive note.
Each story is different so you don’t have to read the other four first.
Great book for children who want to read a book that is next up from a picture book.

I had previously read Rabbits Bad Habits of this series and my kids loved it. We had high expectations going into A Bad Kind is a Sad Thing and we were deeply disappointed. Any attempts at humour in the book were lost on the kids (5-8 years). The moral of the story is fantastic, and it was great to see the animals come together to find a solution. Unfortunately my kids could not get past how scary they found the wolf and icebear. We will try the other Rabbit and Bear books, but this won't be our favourite.

My class are so excited to read this book so I thought I’d get it finished as soon as possible. I enjoyed this story like I have the other books although it wasn’t my favourite. The subject matter was a little more serious than previous books with the threat feeling more real but the messages were consistent and I love how the authors deliver them with humour rather than being heavy handed. I am pleased to note their is another in the series to be expected - my class will be thrilled!

I was surprised by how wise Wolf turned out to be in this one, esp since he started the book by trying to eat Rabbit. He has some excellent guidance for all ages, beyond what you might expect, including the disadvantages of negative self-talk.

Czytałem córce i musiałem ją później dobrze omówić z nia, żeby spała dobrze ;).

Perhaps the final and fifth book in the series - lots of pictures balance out the text making it a good fit for readers easing into chapter books. Rabbit, Bear and the other forest friends learn about fear and bravery from Wolf in this adventure.

Why I started this book: Newly arrived at the library.

Why I finshed it: Short, lighthearted and a lesson about standing up to bullies.
