Dukes Done Wrong #2

Deflecting the Duke

Rate this book
Welcome to the new world from Alexa Aston—Dukes Done Wrong.

Accused of something they never did. Five boys banished from their homes in disgrace, to the place where they find the brothers of their heart—and build new family ties that will last a lifetime.

An angry army spy who becomes a reluctant duke. A virgin widow who seeks a husband who will give her children. An attraction that leads to passion... and love...

Wyatt Stanton served as a spy for Wellington until he receives word of his brother’s death. Reluctantly, he returns to England as the Duke of Amesbury and to Amberwood, a place he once loved and was banished from after his brother falsely accused Wyatt of burning down the family stables with over two dozen horses inside. His soul seared by war, the man who lived for danger must now become a member of Polite Society and find himself a duchess so he has an heir.

Meadow Grant’s father sold her to Lord Selfridge so he could pay his gambling debts. Selfridge collects beautiful things, and Meadow is the most beautiful girl of the Season. Once he possessed her, Selfridge lost interest and moved on to other things. Now a widow, the resilient Meadow is ready to make her own choice this time and find a husband who yearns for children as much as she does. Though attracted to the Duke of Amesbury, he is far too arrogant and conceited for her tastes, even if he does kiss well.

Wyatt is bored with all the younger women on the Marriage Mart, but he believes the beautiful and more mature Lady Selfridge fits his idea of a suitable duchess. The fact that he is attracted to her and she gets along well with his friends only confirms she is the one. Meadow wants to be courted, though, and Wyatt is up to the challenge, relentless in his pursuit, even liking how Meadow makes him work to earn her favor.

Though neither looks for love, will the reckless Wyatt and spitfire Meadow realize love has found them and will flourish, given the chance?

Enjoyable and entertaining read that never fails to keep your mind turning.

Very good characters and wonderful chemistry between them.

I loved every page of this book, Wyatt and Meadow are so sweet I fell a little in love with both of them, I can’t wait for Finch’s book, what did he do?
It’s going to be brilliant.

Also we still have the two at war to come home.
Alexa has a gift for story telling, and you can guarantee, whatever the case, they will be awesome .

I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review

Deflecting the Duke follows Wyatt Stanton, a spy-turned-duke, and Meadow Grant, a widow, both of whom want children and are looking for a spouse. Wyatt falls for Meadow pretty quickly and offers for her hand in marriage. However, Meadow wants to be courted, and Wyatt must work to prove that he is the perfect match for her.

Meadow and Wyatt are fantastic protagonists. Well-developed and interesting people who show strength and bravery, both Wyatt and Meadow have tragic pasts. In childhood, Wyatt was accused of burning down a stable, killing two dozen horses, and was abandoned by his family. Meadow was often ignored by her parents and then treated as a possession and something to be collected rather than as a person. However, neither lets their terrible trauma define them. Instead, they fight for their happiness.

Wyatt and Meadow have a fantastic romance! Meadow is a woman who knows what she wants. She didn’t have the option of choosing her first husband, as she was sold to him to pay her father’s gambling debts. So, when Wyatt comes on strong and quickly asks for Meadow’s hand, Meadow turns him down, much to his astonishment. It is rare for someone to say no to a duke, but Meadow wants to weigh her options, and she wants to be sure she is making the right decision.

Meadow and Wyatt both want children, but neither expect a marriage built on love. However, they can’t deny that their feelings for each other are strong. And I love that Wyatt has to work to earn Meadow’s love. It shows Meadow how strongly he really feels about her, and it gives them time to really get to know each other before committing to each other. This makes for a swoon-worthy romance and many delightful (and a few spicy) scenes of courtship. It also takes Wyatt down a few pegs, which is good because for a little bit he let his new title get to his head.

In addition to the romance, Meadow becomes embroiled in a horrible situation involving pornographic pictures collected by her late husband. Meadow faces manipulations, blackmail, kidnapping, potential ruin, and more, which makes her reluctant to commit to Wyatt. She doesn’t want to tarnish his reputation. However, she doesn’t account for Wyatt’s passion for her. An ex-military man, Wyatt proves capable of helping anyone in precarious situations and is intolerant of abuse and threatening behavior.

I also love the friendships, especially the one between the Turner Terrors. The found family trope is one of my favorites, and the bond that these boys, now men, developed is wonderful. The fact that they were all shunned and disowned by their families yet found kindness and acceptance at the school they attended together proves that family isn’t always the people you are bound to by blood. Meadow also develops new friendships and maintains a great friendship with her cousin, which helps her gain confidence and self-assurance.

I’m loving the Dukes Done Wrong series, and though this is the second book in the series, it can easily be read as a standalone. However, if you did read the first book, you’ll be pleased to know that the protagonists, Emery and Miles, have pertinent roles in this story as well. Thanks so much to NetGalley, Dragonblade Publishing, and Alexa Aston for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!

Amborwood, Kent, England. July 1796. Alexa Aston’s Deflecting the Duke (Dukes Done Wrong, #2) introduces Wyatt Stanton, another Turner Terror, who is viciously but wrongly blamed for a horrible incident at the family’s home, Amborwood. Wyatt is a second son who has only a couple of servants who show him any kind care. The present Duke favors his heir, Wyatt’s older brother, Clive, who is actually ‘a nasty piece of work’. The incident where a young Wyatt acts honorably becomes a tragedy because of his older brother’s actions. Their father believes Clive, his heir, when he states that all is Wyatt’s fault, and Wyatt is disowned. Years later Wyatt sadly leaves the army to become the Duke of Amesbury as his wastrel brother has died. Enter: Meadow Grant, Lady Selfridge, a virgin widow. Meadow wants a husband, children, but most of all, she hopes for love - something that was very absent from her first marriage. Time: London Season - ‘the marriage mart’. The new Duke of Amesbury and Lady Selfridge are on a collision course. What happens is quite entertaining! 4 stars

Deflecting the Duke is a Well Crafted Story. It held my interest from beginning to end.

Wyatt Stanton who was horribly mistreated and lied on and sent away at age 10 to The Turner School for boys. Wyatt meets 4 other boys whose family have disowned them and thrown them out of there homes because of lies. They call themselves The Terrors. Wyatt's father and brother Clive have died and he is now the Duke of Amesbury. Wyatt is determined to find and wife and have an heir to protect the Dukedom.

Meadow is married to Viscount Selfridge who is a collector of beautiful and rare things. He collected her but never touched her. So she is still a virgin. Meadow is 25 and wants to find a husband of her choice. She desperately wants to become a mother and have some children. She must find a husband.

Wyatt and Meadows worlds collide and leads them both to there HEA!!

Disappointing follow up to book 2. Storyline was nearly identical only this H had little redeeming qualities - and this heroine was Mary Sue perfect and beautiful. Entire book was about how everyone wanted her but he had to have her. 2 conversations later - it's love!

I was excited to read about the spy hero - but I find it hard to believe he's a people person when he's about as subtle as a knife.

Mostly though I'm disappointed in the conflict and villian storyline. It involves pedophiles, and I felt most of it was being glossed over. I think the author has no business writing about traumatized children if she doesn't know how. One little boy who's alluded has been abused most of his life - would not hug a male stranger with empty promises. And I hated they wanted to put them to work?? They're CHILDREN, open a school or an orphanage, let them heal. Instead they now have a child laborour workforce as a Duke and Duchess. I don't see this as honorable.

This is the second Book in The Dukes Done Wrong series! I loved the first one in this series, so I was excited to read this one.
This is my fourth book I’ve read by Alexa Aston so I knew it was going to be good!

This series follows 5 friends that as kids were blamed for crimes they didn’t do. Second sons that were cast out of their family and sent to a private school. They became fast friends and call themselves “The Turner Terrors”. This book is about Wyatt.

Wyatt is thrust into the dukedom after his brother dies. (Must like the first book with Miles). He plans on finding a wife right away, not caring about a love match. The female main character is Meadow, she was sold for a gambling debt by her father to wed an older man. They were married in name only, she’s still a virgin and now a widow. She also is looking for a husband, not caring about a love match.

Meadow is a strong female lead and I very much liked reading from her perspective.
Wyatt is a little stubborn at first but he’s super sweet with Meadow. I enjoyed the courting so much and found myself interested throughout this book. Love that Emery and Miles play a big role in the book helping Wyatt find a match. (Loved their characters in the first book of this series)

This book also had a lot of action and it kept me interested throughout! I can’t wait to read the next books in this series!

A few steamy moments throughout that were well written! Overall it was a cute, enjoyable and short historical romance read! It made my heart so happy reading this!

Trigger Warnings: Sexual Assault, talks of child abuse.

Mysterious and Poignant

Wyatt and Meadow are meant to be.
The Duke of Amesbury was never meant to be a Duke. Inheriting after the death of his brother he lives a life that is not to be considered.
Meadow is a lady who has been kept in the country. She is still a virgin because her deceased
husband doesn't want her.
Together they make an astounding couple.
Alexa Aston writes an amazing book.

The victim mentality in this book is over the top.

The narrative does it's best not to use the word 'victim', yet it is written in such a way as to make sure you think 'See how everyone has wronged our MCs? Poor wittle babies, how they have suffered.'

And between the two, the one that wears the martyr cloak the best is the FMC. She is so saintly in her misery she ends up looking condescending.

“Looks fade. At least you will be wealthy and a duchess.”

She shook her head. It was obvious Tilda hadn’t a clue what love was. How strong and lasting it would be. Meadow felt sorry her cousin would never experience the joy she had with Wyatt as she wound her hair around and inserted pins into it.

This interaction Meadow (no, I swear, her name is Meadow) has with her cousin is the culmination of many sad, condescending thoughts where she pities her cousin her loveless marriage as if she hadn't had a loveless marriage of her own. As if the cousin's marriage hadn't been as arranged as her own. The only difference is Meadow's husband is dead and the cousin's isn't.

Even her search for a husband is shrouded by martyrdom. 'Oh, I just want a caring husband who gives me children. I won't expect love because I know that would be asking too much'. UUUURGH! I can't stand her.

The hero on the other hand, was easier to sympathize with. The title goes to his head for a bit and I found that so human, I liked him. (How low is the bar for this book?)

The villain was too much. (Even the brother was too much. Are all older brothers sociopath in this series?!?!) I mean, blackmail and kidnapping wasn't enough you had to add p***philia to it?!?! Why?!?!?! His declaration of sleeping with 'anything' felt like a jab to pansexuality. Or a twisted perversion of it.

Suffice to say, despite having liked the first book, I'm dropping this series. If my curiosity of the vicar wins out, maybe I'll read his book, but for the moment I'm out.

This is a beautiful romance, with heart-stopping suspense and two wrongs that do make a right. I thoroughly enjoyed this amazing novel as two people who have been victims of their families' maliciousness, find their paths crossing and bringing hope and healing for the future. Wyatt, Duke of Amesbury has put his evil brother's mechanicians behind him, but the rumors still follow him. Sent to Turner Academy for troublesome boys, Wyatt's father did not realize that he was in fact doing his son a favor, as he found in the walls of the school all the nurturing, friendship, and education that he would need for a successful life. Meadow Grant, on the other hand, is sold as a thing of beauty to her husband, who died leaving in her hands a poisonous legacy. Although Meadow initially thwarts Wyatt's advances, when she needs help, he is the one person who can protect her. In some ways, Meadow is emotionally more mature than Wyatt, but what he lacks in experience he quickly learns as the people around him guide him, and even chastise him when he steps out of line. The plot comes to a beautiful conclusion, with justice being served. I received a copy of this book as a gift through Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Matthew Lloyd Davies
⭐️⭐️⭐️

Normally, Mr Davies is a 4 star narrator for me, but in this book, it was a bit off.

I didn't much like the two mc's in this story.
It felt flat.

I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher via NetGalley. This in no way impacted on my view.

When he was sent away from home, accused for setting the fire which killed multiple horses in a locked stable, Wyatt Stanton is glad to see the back of his father, and wicked older brother. He's found his family at the Turner School, and has made a name for himself in the military. Now Duke of Amesbury, following his father and brother's deaths, he knows he needs to fix the estate, and do right by the staff and tenants who suffered under his predecessors. He also needs to find a wife, and soon, in order to beget and heir and a spare for the estate, but he doesn't want a dewey faced debutante, fresh out of the school room. His friend, Miles, Duke of Winslow, and his new wife, Emery, agree to help Wyatt in learning the ropes of being Duke, and finding his partner. But as soon as he spots Meadow, Lady Selfridge, he will marry her, and no one else. When Meadow was enjoying her first season, her father sold her to the elderly Lord Selfridge, who treated her like a prize, and hid her in the countryside. Now widowed, and alone apart from her cousin, she wants to marry again, and have a family, but never thinks she would be good enough to be with Wyatt. And when the wicked Lord Kibbard comes out of the woodwork, and starts to blackmail Meadow over a vile possession her late husband owned, Wyatt will do anything to save Meadow, and punish Kibbard.

I think I might have liked this book even better than the first. Meadow was a truly fantastic main character, and the perfect fit for Wyatt, who was brash and gruff when they first met. The power of being duke had gone to his head, and he expected Meadow to fawn over him, and accept his abrupt proposal immediately, but she made him work for it. Their romance grew naturally, and I liked to see them both become more real with each other, and see their softer sides. The blackmail plot, and what it was about, was sickening, and I'm so glad that Kibbard got his punishment in the end, and that Wyatt and Meadow were able to rescue the children who'd suffered so much! I'm looking forward to book 3.

4.5 STARS

I really have enjoyed this series and how the Dukes Done Wrong came to be. Starts out sad for each and this one has many shades of sadness. This is a stand alone, but with some of the character's from story 1 making an appearance.

Be warned possible trigger for some. Thankfully ALL off page, but it is clear on many fronts, that children were being sexually abused - from younger than 5 to at least 12. All ends with the villains being punished - AGAIN no details on abuse given.

I was very disappointed when we meet the H after he left the military. He saw first hand from his father (Duke) and eldest brother how they treated cruelly the staff. Wouldn't you think the H, when he inherits the Title, would want to be anything like his father/brother? He was very rude and condescending to his staff and that surprised me. It took me awhile to like him. His attitude didn't change until over half the story so stay with it. His journey to how he should act, finally hits him.

The h hasn't enjoyed any aspects of being a wife. She finally has her freedom and wants to enjoy finding her own husband. She is strong, loving and caring and was a great match for the insufferable Duke.

Lovemaking within and outside of marriage, heat level 4 out of 5 and described several times.

Nasty villains, suspense, drama, bumpy road to HEA, romance and spice. No cheating, no cliffhanger, great secondary character's too. Can't wait for more stories on these troublesome Dukes. (ljb)

Deflecting the Duke, by Alexa Aston. At the beginning of the book the intense drama was great. I was really engaged in the story. I found my heart going out to Wyatt. I was happy to see when he was older he was able to rely on old friends. I love how the book reads with a smooth flow to it.
This helps with the pace of the story. I love that the writer placed the age of Meadow at twenty five. That was great. I love that this is a happy ending love story that was filled with so much romance.

Enjoyable read. It took me a minute to get used to the uppity voice of the male characters. They sounded too polished (masculine) for me. The narrator was easy to listen to, but I just wanted more strength of voice. I did enjoy the storyline very much.

This is the second book of the Dukes Done Wrong series. The second Turner Terror finds love. I have said it before, but it bears saying again...If it's a book about a Duke written by Alexa Aston, it goes to the top of my TBR pile!

This book should be read in order of the series, as Emery and Miles from the first book play an important part of this story also. This is a love at first sight for both the heroine and the hero, although they really don't realize it. Wyatt is a newly named Duke who thought Meadow would immediately accept his proposal the day after meeting him, but Meadow definitely make him work for his Happily Ever After!

The blackmail plot is a unique storyline, and it should be noted it has to do with pedophilia as that may be a trigger for some. Meadow is a strong heroine and I loved seeing Wyatt and she come to know each other.

I definitely recommend this book and am looking forward to the rest of the series.

Trigger warning: pedophilia

At least two characters are pedophiles. It bizarrely becomes a major plot device.

Everything really wrapped up around 88%, so I don't know why it kept going. I mostly skimmed the silly kidnapping plot that followed. It was extremely frustrating that we didn't even get the wedding night scene since the steam was the only good thing about this book.

The book is a wild ride because it starts off with a rape scene. So trigger warning #rape.

There's a couple of random chapters in the beginning about the H's childhood. The author doesn't know how to write children, so the scenes are very random. You would think they would be a prologue, but they're not.

A lot of the scenes felt choppy. Individual scenes were good, but they felt disconnected.

I didn't really understand the H's personality. He grows into this pig-headed, stubborn jerk, but his childhood background really doesn't set him up to be that way. It's very confusing.

I liked the h, but her personality was a bit inconsistent.

The dialogue was a bit stiff.

Fabulous 2nd book in emotional series

This second book in the Dukes Done Wrong series that focuses on boys who have been unjustly accused of some negative activity is even better than the introduction to the stories. I loved the emotion and the angst of the background of both Wyatt and Meadow and felt the romance was very strong. I can’t wait to read the third book and hope that we can follow this engaging couple in future books.

I can’t say I liked this book. The romance was a bit boring. Wyatt became very pompous and entitled after becoming the Duke. His courting skills seemed very lazy. Then there is the whole pedophilia plot that was truly unnecessary and takes away from the hea for me.

Deflecting the Duke is book two in author Alexa Aston’s newest series
Dukes Done Wrong. This series centers around five men —Wyatt Stanton, William Finchley, Aaron Hartfield, Miles Notley, and Donovan Martin — who met as boys after each was accused of a heinous action and deemed to be unfit to remain in polite society. Though from unrelated families meeting each other at The Turner Academy, where they were all sent to live - formed a life long bond stronger than relationship by blood. They dubbed themselves “The Turner Terrors,” and now as adults they remain a chosen family. These men would do anything for each other.

In this story the MC are Wyatt Stanton and Meadow Selfridge. Wyatt is the second son, the spare, and until he was ten years old he grew up in a household devoid of love and no attention was spared for him unless it was by his father —The Duke of Amesbury— when he was being punished. After being accused of a heinous act, that was actually done by his older brother the Duke’s heir, Wyatt was sent to live at Turner Academy. He was instructed to never show his face in polite society again, he was no longer even the spare in his fathers eyes, he would live at Turner Academy and then serve in the military. Imagine Wyatts surprise when thanks to English primogeniture laws and the death of both his father and his older brother, Wyatt was being called home from the military, to take his place as The Duke of Amesbury.

Meadow Selfridge she has lived a sheltered life, even more sheltered than what was normal for women of society in the early 1800’s. She married quickly after her debut, so quick she only enjoyed 2-weeks of the season, before her father announced she was to be married to a man she hadn’t met. Meadow found out her fathers haste was due to the fact she had been sold to Viscount Selfridge by her father, who perpetually was in debt, thanks to his love of gambling. Sold. Married to a man some 40-years her senior in exchange for money. There was no celebration. No wedding breakfast. No honeymoon. Meadow was whisked off to her new husbands country estate and left there for six years. Oh her husband visited at times but not to spend time with her, no she was relegated to an item on a shelf, one that her husband only wanted to own but not interact. Now though this would change. Her husband was dead. So now at age 24 Meadow finds herself a widow and still a virgin. She vows to herself this will change. She is heading to London and with the help of her cousin Meadow hopes to find a suitable man to marry. She wants a man who will show her attention, make her feel important, and one who wants a lot of children.

The attraction between Wyatt and Meadow is instant. The chemistry is palpable. However Wyatt has always been a bit brash and once he sets his mind on anything, he acts. It served him well in the military. It’s not going to serve him as well on the marriage mart. Meadow has decided she wants to be courted, wooed a bit, made to feel adored — in short, she is going to make Wyatt work for it! It’s a good thing Wyatt is determined and he has the art of seduction on his side. The emotions start to grow between Wyatt and Meadow; once Wyatt realizes he loves Meadow it’s game over. Thankfully by this time Meadow has been wooed enough and gotten to know Wyatt. She loves him as well not to mention the seductive way he plays her body.

So it seems to easy, right? Happy couple. Happily ever after.

Nope. Meadow has a secret she has been hiding from Wyatt. A secret that can ruin her and him by association. That’s not all though, because Wyatt knows she is hiding something and he is using his former military training in espionage to find out what.

One has to wonder if these two will get their HEA or if some secrets are too much to overcome, even if it’s a love match!❤️❤️

Trigger…This review contains a spoiler.

The following are my thoughts as I read this book. Wyatt Stanton…spare heir to the Duke of Amesbury, younger brother of Clive the heir to Amesbury, blamed for a horrible act perpetrated by his brother and sent away from home. Meadow Selfridge…sold to a viscount to settle father’s gambling debts, has a tendency to want giggle at inappropriate times, a widow. The H has been estranged from his family for more than a decade. The h has a secret about her marriage of six years. Oh my the h has discovered that her deceased husband had some naughty secrets. The H is now the one thing he never wanted to be but he remember those who were kind to him and rewards them accordingly. Oh how cool the H is visiting one of his best friends (Miles-Duke of Winslow) he was in a previous book. Awww the wife of Miles is pregnant. The H has decided that he needs a wife to get an heir and a spare, but he doesn’t care about love. LOL, the h is having her first season after her mourning period and she is very naive. Hmmm the H has a pretty high opinion of himself. Why are the women openly discussing who was a spy, isn’t that dangerous? Oh the h doesn’t know what to do with the H. Aww the H has learned on the h’s secrets and finds it endearing. Well well the villain has finally made his presence known and he is threatening the h, but the H doesn’t know. Oh the h has decided she is going to protect the H from the villain (bad idea). The H has discovered the h’s second secret and he is shocked and pleased. The H is turning out to be quite a surprise. The H has learned the h’s final secret and he has vengeance on his mind. Yep the h is super naive to be a widow. The H has another side. Oh I think the villain has just made a very bad decision. Yep, the villain should have just walked away. Oh well a HEA. This is book two in the Dukes Done Wrong series. It was a combination second chance, redemption, and social awareness. At first I thought the H was a really arrogant and cold guy, but then I changed my mind as more of his real character came out. Although it was entertaining the social awareness part was a little difficult to read because it is still happening today. There is of course adult language and steam.
I will warn you that a very disturbing adult topic is discussed in the book so if you don’t want to know I suggest you stop reading now.

There is a discussion regarding child molestation but it is done tastefully (if that is possible). I also believe and agree that it is a topic that more people should be aware of.

*I received a free ARC from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion*

This is a great second book for the series! It has great characters and a story that is different enough from the first book that I didn't feel like I was just reading the same basic plot over again. I also thought that the danger posed to Meadow was more developed and interesting than what occurred with Emery and Miles in the first book.

One thing that the author does so well in all of her books is create characters with substance, especially the women. Because of the time period in which the stories take place there are some limitations on how independent a woman can be without creating too many anachronisms, but I feel this author makes them just forward thinking enough that these women could have really existed. This is so true with Meadow - she knows what she is looking for in a husband and life and she is not willing to settle for anything less than what she wants. I liked that she initially turns down Wyatt because he was acting like a spoiled entitled jackass. She makes him work for her affection without it feeling like she was stringing him along or playing games.

I was surprised that Wyatt acted the way he did shortly after becoming the duke considering how much he hated his father and brother and the way they treated others - and after having righted the wrong that had been done to Joan. I did enjoy the moment when Emery could have done a little 'told you so' dance but ultimately felt that her point had been made for her. I did like that Wyatt stopped just expecting Meadow to just be happy that a duke took notice of her and actually started to court her and get to know her. It made their bond and relationship stronger and set a good foundation for their eventual marriage. It was also the reason he didn't allow her to run away from her problems and helped her to face them.

The drama at the end with Kibbard felt less forced than other "damsel in distress" plotlines and showed just how tough Meadow could be when she needed to. It also set up the chance for Meadow and Wyatt to work together rather than needing to save one another.

It was nice to see the characters of Miles, Emery, and Finch again and to have them actually be a part of the story rather than just little cameos/check-ins. I hope to see all of these characters again in the next book in the series.

Deflecting the Duke by Alexa Aston is the second in her new series, Dukes Done Wrong. This series is about the men who have grown from boys exiled from their families for perceived wrong-doing, mostly the sin of not being the first born son. They wee all sent to Turner Academy, a place for incorrigibles, which some boys were, and became fast friends. They were raised with love and respect, went to university, and made something of themselves. This story is about Wyatt Stanton, Duke of Amesbury. He has cashed out of the military and is home to assume his duties, after her older brother fell down the steps in a drunken stupor, and died of a broken neck. He has plenty and has set about finding people to help him do it: the maid, Joan, who was his supporter when he was a child and is now a widow. She is the new housekeeper. Next he needs to see to a wardrobe, and meet his friend, Miles, another of the Turner Terrors. After Emery sees to a basic education regarding the running of an estate, they are off to London, to the Season, where he hopes to find a bride. Emery tries to assist but Wyatt is stubborn, and can't conceive of a duke, him, who doesn't get what he wants.

He found her, Meadow, Lady Selfridge, and wants to offer for her the first time he meets her. Thankfully he didn't, but he plans to the very next day, despite Emery's warnings. Emery was right. Things get off to a slow start. Their whole relationship is set wrong by a secret Meadow possesses. Actually, her late husband's secret. It threatens everything. Wyatt is a good man despite stepping out on the wrong foot. He will become an excellent duke. Meadow deserves a wonderful life after being sold to Lord Selfridge and locked up on his estate for six years. She is now with her cousin and after seeing the state of her marriage, wants more for herself. Could it be Wyatt? This is a wonderful premise and a good book. Meadow strings Wyatt along to repay his impulsiveness; all along believing her is the one for her. Aston has done a wonderful job with this lovely romance, with a little bit of thriller thrown in. I highly recommend you read it.

Wyatt Stanton second son to the Duke of Amesbury was wrongly accused of burning down the stables when he was ten & banished to the Turner Academy where he made friends with four other also wrongly accused boys. He served as a spy for Wellington until he receives word of his brother’s death. Reluctantly, he returns to England as the Duke of Amesbury and to Amberwood, a place he once loved . Wyatt is immediately attracted to the beautiful and more mature Lady Selfridge who fits his idea of a suitable duchess.
This is the second book in the series & could be read on its own. There is something about the author’s books, which totally captivate me & I find once I start one I can’t put it down, this book was no exception & it was after 3am when I finished it. I loved Meadow who was a strong woman determined to be herself, I loved how she stood up to Kibbard also how she didn’t fall at Wyatt's feet but made him court her. I had mixed feelings about Wyatt, basically I loved him but sometimes I wanted to shake him as he was occasionally so arrogant, I loved how Meadow & Emery brought him down a peg or two. I loved the attraction between the pair & how their relationship grew & deepened. There is a dark side to the book which could be a trigger for some people. A well written, engrossing read which I loved, roll on the rest of the series especially Finch’s story as he intrigues me
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Another of the five Turner Terrors, Wyatt, claims a title he does not want and an estate from which he was banished for a tragedy actually caused by his older brother. He would rather return to being Wellington's spy than establish himself in Society and responsibly find a Duchess to ensure an heir. Unfortunately Wyatt has no clue how to be a Duke, so he assumes the authoritarian arrogance that his limited experience associates with the title. Not the best attitude to woo a woman or favorably impress this reader.

A virgin widow, Lady Meadow Selfridge, is ready to choose a husband with whom she can share mutual respect and have children. Although Wyatt and Meadow find a mutual physical attraction, she wants to be courted properly, not run over roughshod by a full-of-himself peer! After consulting with the other Terror turned duke, Wyatt finds that he rather likes Meadow's feisty spirit, and that she makes him work for her hand. Neither Wyatt nor Meadow is looking for true love, but....

As the romantic relationship develops, a secondary plot involving some pornographic lithographs (including some featuring children) that belonged to Lord Selfridge leads to threats and kidnapping despite Wyatt's best efforts to protect Meadow from the extortionist and shield the existence of the lithographs from public knowledge until they can be destroyed. Nothing like a little evil to up the tension!

I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the characters. I look forward to the stories of the rest of the Turner Terrors, and from the name of the series I guess they all gain titles, although I am very interested in how that will work for the fifth Terror, Finch who has been introduced as a clergyman! When you read Alexa Aston books always expect some surprises!
