"but to some, the very existence of a certain person in the world is in itself, hope."

wow. i have so many thoughts and emotions right now i can't even begin to put it all into words. i've been meaning to start this novel for over a year now (thank you ladan for the rec back in december 2020 i love u) and i can't believe it took me this long to finally pick it up. if you've been having doubts about whether or not this is your thing— or if the novel is just too long for you— read it anyways!!!

trust me, it feels SO refreshing to be reading a novel so unique— with such an intricate plot that i am constantly theorizing and guessing what could possibly happen next, while watching as the pieces all slowly fit together. there were so many moments that had me gasping and frantically highlighting sections, trying to work out all the hints and clues throughout the plot! one of my favourite feelings when starting a new book is the anticipation and the excitement you feel when you truly love the characters to the point where you are just so emotionally invested in their journey. this novel definitely fulfilled that— it was really everything i wanted and more.

spoilers ahead!!!

"Body in abyss, heart in paradise."

tiān guān cì fú follows xie lian, a disgraced and fallen god that ascends to the heavens for the third time after 800 years in exile. when introduced, he may first seem like your standard kind, humble, and strictly good protagonist that can do no wrong— and yet, there is so much more to his character. one of my favourite qualities to experience within a series is when author properly explores and develops the line between right and wrong. no character is strictly good or evil; which is strongly present here despite the plot following characters that vary from divine gods that reside in the heavens to ghost kings in the underworld. it's incredibly easy for a reader to draw that good vs. evil connection and yet, that's so clearly not the case in this novel. despite being a martial god, xie lian still has many flaws; he's not the perfect saint or the most morally right character and that's what makes him so real. throughout the story we start to see how heavily burdened he is, weighed down by his past and actions but still chooses to do what he believes is best and remain kindhearted. xie lian is just so utterly captivating that in such a short amount of time, i already found myself so strongly attached to him. he's such a complex, beautifully crafted character and i deeply enjoyed every single second of it.

his relationship with hua cheng, the ghost king, was truly a delight. i absolutely loved everything about them. just the idea itself of a fallen god and a deadly ghost king is enough to have me obsessed already, it's too perfect. their scenes in the gambler's den alone had me giddy and practically kicking my legs in excitement. their character's just meshed together so well— from their hilarious interactions to the sweet, tender moments that had me in tears. i'm so completely invested (there's no going back now) and i can't wait to see how their relationship develops as well as how their pasts are intertwined!!!

"As if Mu Qing was the type to hold it back. He sneered. "Everyone says it was because you couldn't stand seeing your old master fall from grace. What a pretty excuse. At the end of the day, you just didn't want to waste the rest of your days following a broken man."
Feng Xin swung out his fist. "WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU KNOW?!""

XIANLE TRIO!! the angst. the unresolved feelings and bitterness. i love them so so much and my heart hurts for them. they have had the strongest chokehold on me while simultaneously putting me through so much pain and an emotional crisis. their strained relationships with each other— feng xin and mu qing going from being so utterly devoted to xie lian to strangers that hadn't seen him for centuries. watching feng xin worry over xie lian and struggling on approaching him really tore at my heart— coming so close to saying more to him only to back out at the last minute. meanwhile mu qing just simply avoids his emotions with a hostile front, barely bringing himself to speak to him. there has just been so many complicated feelings and pain between them, steadily building up over the centuries— which will only make it all the more heartbreaking when it finally all boils over. i can't wait to see how their relationship progresses throughout the novel; i'm especially anticipating all of their history together (i'm a completely and total sucker for angst, i eat it up every time) in books 2 and 4!!!

another thought: xie lian and feng xin are exes. you cannot change my mind on this.

highlights! (so many but here are some of my favs)

- xie lian. that's it just everything about him
- every single xianle trio interaction
- hua cheng openly flirting with xie lian in front of everyone
- feng xin and mu qing <3
- nanyao!!! they were so fun i loved their banter (especially with xie lian)
- shi qiangxuan and xie lian friendship
- xie lian saying he has a condition where he can't get erect when a woman is flirting with him
- all of the world-building!!
- hualian serving tropes and soulmateism every other chapter

there's so much i'm anticipating and am excited for but i'm really looking forward to the xianle history in the next books. between xie lian's origins with how he was exiled and the war— there's just so much i don't know yet and i absolutely can't wait to see how it all ties together. not even to mention how he parted ways from mu qing and feng xin— i don't think i'm mentally prepared to handle that EVER.

i was originally going to write a review for all of this once i got to the end but i'm so glad i decided to do it by book because i've had way too much say. this will be joining the poppy war in "the series i never shut up about" category. cannot stress this enough but PLEASE read this!!! it's a total masterpiece and i promise you will not regret it at all!!!!!

Finished my reread of the first three volumes just before volume 4 starts!

I realized I never wrote a manhua review for tgcf so I'm just going to say that this is the most stunning manhua (or comic in general) I've ever read and it truly captures the heart and vibes of the novel. It also follows the novel very closely and accurately and novel fans can't get disappointed from it.

Please follow it legally on bilibili manhua app (please look for guides on tumblr or twitter, there's plenty and I will try to link to them in the future when I have more time) and support STARember and the manhua team ♥

I have nothing to say other than I pity the people who haven't gotten the chance to experience this story yet. The art style is so gorgeous and the story is the literal embodiment of sheer beauty. Though I do wish they had not cut out a lot of parts from the novel, I still love it very much. And as for HuaLian, well I can't describe in words just how much I love them.

As a personal opinion I stay away from very long books and this one has 5 books spanning over 225 chapters. I have just finished 1/5th of it and I know it will take me longer to finish the whole thing. If it wasn’t for the sheer amount of work put my way from office I’m pretty sure I could have finished at least 3 by now but life gets in the way.

If you’re a fan of beautiful world building with simple characters that really do not make your head spin too much, this is the perfect book. I am among the very few who haven’t watched or read her previous books although they are more famous than this. Yes, I have not watched The Untamed. As someone who watches Asian queer cinema a lot, it’s quite shocking that I haven’t watched one of the major Danmei dramas. The others I have at least watched 5-10 episodes before abandoning, but in that case I haven’t even started. So it is with a complete fresh face I stepped into this book and in a certain manner I am quite glad I did as I am thoroughly enjoying the novel. As I sad, the world building in the novel is exquisite. I have always praised the authors that manage to transport their readers into their own worlds and this novel does exactly that. We are transported to a world of Heavenly Beings, Ghost and Demons, Cultivators and the whole wuxia world. Although I use the word wuxia, this is more of a supernatural novel. At the end of the 1st book we are not yet given any hints of romantic relationship occurring between the leads but we are shown slight inclinations. It is easy to love our ML. He’s enduring, charmingly unlucky and perpetually with bad rotten luck. Until the end of the first book, he was the all charming ML. What happens when his patience is brought to the utmost end? We are yet to find out in the second book.

I got into MXTX's work after completing The Untamed. Wow! How does world building like that come out of one human brain? I literally had to keep track of all the characters through wiki, getting slightly spoiled in the process. Not only that, she's written complex characters whose actions aren't what they seem, unlike MDZS where one of them - Lan Zhan - was straight and narrow. The heroes don't always do the right thing and the villains don't always do bad things. Ngl I was into Hua Cheng fucking up anything or anyone that even looked at Xie Lian wrong. XL has no idea how whipped HC is for him.

Speaking of whipped, I know MXTX didn't write in smut (can we get a new word I hate this one) bc of Chinese censors. Idk if this is a good or bad thing (good bc I'm not into the non-con stuff and weird biting kink that was in mdzs and bad bc the reason for the censorship is homophobia :(. Yes I'm kink shaming and what about it??). I also don't know what heterosexual explanation the censors came up for the donghua and how they'll dodge them in the live adaptation. These two are so obviously not just 'bros', come on Gambling Den scene!

Anyway back to the review, the translations were done so well considering they were done by fans and everything flows so smoothly, they've elevated the original work so that it reads poetically. Thank you for your hard work! However, mxtx writes non-linearly (and tbh info-dumps alot) so this first book is in the present, and the books ahead are probably massive flashbacks with information we already have, only this time expanded in detail. This one is also episodic with not much plot throughout, more of the consequences of past events coming to fruition. I felt sorry for Xie Lian. He's so tired and fallen so low that he doesn't feel even common embarassment anymore (I was cringing and flinching at all the humiliation he endured). All the old man wants is a home, a friend and simpler times 🥺

My friend encouraged me to watch the anime and well, I did. As per usual I became invested in the plot and my heart couldn’t handle that cliffhanger of an episode 13.

So yeah I read the book. Because I was emotionally invested you see. I had to see just how the Xie Lian and Hua Cheng were gonna progress yanno? And I had QUESTIONS.

So, first off, the book clears up a couple of things I didn’t understand at first in the anime.

So how do I put this without saying any spoilers?
1. This book is hella good
2. Great World building
3. Easy to read/engaging writing
4. S L O W B U R N
5. Lovable characters.

Side note: Xie Lian is absolutely gorgeous. And precious. If anything bad happens to this man I’d rage and die.

So yes- read it baby! It’s worth it.

What not to love about this book!!! Why not salivate for a man like XL or HC?
Despite the pain and heartache, why not read the book??!!

-gender fluidity throughout the book
kicks gender norms outta the world
-humour : will make you laugh and never stop
well, you will stop laughing to cry sometimes
-the adventures, mysteries will blow your brain
but detective Xie Lian will blow your brain more
-one crimson clothed supreme hot man you can't help but fall for (new crush alert)
-romance you will swoon over
new tricks you will learn to kiss ( XL ft. HC version lol)

juSt READ THE BOOK WILL YA

6/10/23: 2nd read

Manhua Vol. 1, Ep. 0-17
For all of Xie Lian's kindness, self-deprecation, and mild countenance, I forgot that he initially ascended as a martial god and was a powerful soldier in his own rights. The prince who pleased the gods. These so called case in Yujun Mountain showed his skills even with 2 shackles subduing his powers.🥲

BEST SCENE
Ep. 6: Xie Lian and Hua Cheng meeting but not seeing each other's faces in Yujun Mountain is the best 'aw shucks' moment.💔

HuaLian met after 800 years

Almost saw each other's faces

I love MXTX and the world they created but STARember just made it all the more wonderful with exceptional artwork. When the characters were in heaven, everything looks SO HEAVENLY but when in places with ghosts, everything is very horror-like. Though I knew how outstanding this manhua is, rereading still left me in AWE. Especially since these were earlier works compared to the recent ones that were even more beautiful.😍

P.S. Fu Yao's eyeroll fest and Nan Feng Part 1😂

These two are in love!!! NOW KISS!!!

The first book covers all of what I watched in the donghua and then a little more that wasn't. The bit that is covered in the donghua felt a little slow, considering I knew what would happen. I did, however, appreciate the extra bit of background information on everything. Once I got to the new chapters, such as the Gambler's Den and then the encounter with the Green Ghost Qi, I was here for it! I just want more HuaLian, okay?

I DID want some surprises/reveals to be more shocking as they kind of just came without set up, so I was like alright. I'm also on the fence about the writing, but it IS translated so I'm being easy on it stylistically. Perhaps I love these characters and the fanart more than I love the actual story? I do like the story continues to move along with arcs happening one after the next, but sometimes the explanations drag on for a while and, as I was reading on screens and couldn't read a lot to begin with, I was glazing over some of the information at parts. Also, COME ON Xie Lian you know where you've met San Lang before (hint: it was in the prologue)!!!!!

Alright, moving onto book 2! Xie Lian's a cinnamon roll that can actually kill you. I'm ready to see his savage side; I'm ready for more HuaLian.

My silly brain thought the manhua will be ahead of the official translated novels but no hahaha I still gotta be patient to know what happens next (damn me for not being able to read the original Chinese texts). I swear with the amount of patience I am trying to manifest for these books I should be cultivating to immortality right now.

BUT MAN OH MAN THE ART IS MAGNIFICENT! Every character is gorgeous and every expression and action sequence beautifully drawn. I will be keeping updated fortnightly without fail! The app is really easy to use too, so I'd say please support the creators on Bilibili Comics for this gorgeous work.
