I escaped the jungle, only to end up abducted and held captive. But I’m not waiting to be rescued. Screw that damsel-in-distress garbage!
I’m the last Phoenix shifter and I’m about to give them hellfire!
Of course, I’d wind up kidnapped. I thought being kidnapped would be sexy or something. I was dead wrong. Haha, get it?
As if the jungle, viper bites, piranhas, killer bugs and the five sexy dipstick-for-brains I saved weren’t enough, I’m now a captive of some lab coat weirdos in an experimentation facility.
I definitely got the wrong idea of torture from “50 Shades of Grey”. Don’t look at me like that, you read it too!
They seem to be willing to stop at nothing in their effort to break me. But come on, they’re not that creative, just annoying in their determination to figure out how much I can take.
Another rare shifter is being held here. I can feel him. Yep, another freaking mate. In case you haven’t been counting, that makes it six fated mates… sheesh! My five jaguar shifter mates couldn’t seem to make up their minds. Were they happy to have me or desperate to ditch me? I'm not even sure if they are coming to rescue me.
Who did I tick off in the universe to deserve all of this?
No need to send help, because I’ve got this... as soon as I find some clothes.
They are about to find out exactly who and what I really am.
"But Did You Die?" is a comedy filled paranormal romance series that includes jaguar shifters, a mysterious underground society, fated mates, and an incredibly clumsy Phoenix. Follow Amaryllis as she discovers who she is and ‘collects’ her soulmates along the way! It is full of humor, adventure, and scenes to entice and thrill you… or to make you unexpectedly snort with laughter. The series will have a HEA… it will just take a little while to get there!
*Ryls is being held in a laboratory, and some of what she endures is included in this book.*
Sedona Ashe lives in a tiny town in Tennessee, near the Great Smoky Mountains. She enjoys reading and writing stories filled with powerful paranormal females, and sexy supernatural men. 🔥 Bookish Thoughts Omg I laughed so hard reading this one! Whoever told me to give the series another chance because book 2 was better….. THANK YOU! This was so much funnier and better written than book 1!
I love the FMC! And I LOVE that she is making her bully mates from book 1 GROVEL! And I mean proper GROVELING! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
💫 Fave Quote “It’s going to be fine. Oh! And just a head’s up, I tend to die, frequently.”
Despite the somewhat wishy washy nature of the heroine in the first book in this series (insta-love sex with the guy who just left you repeatedly and callously to die! *eye roll*), I really enjoyed the premise of the story and absolutely adored the optimistic bull headed determined strength of the heroine before she turned into a lust starved doormat.
This second book was very much anticipated and looked forward to, but I just didn’t get the same fire. There are suddenly amazing cosmic powers (with zero training!), and sex instead of saving the new Insta-love, and best buddy’s who are instantly forgiven for a month of torture just because they apologised and promised that they hated every second of it.
The same girl who saves everyone and HAPPILY survives weeks of pain and torture curls up into a ball and freaks out because she is in a plane!
If she is so kick arse as to survive a trek through the Amazon with no help, surely she could manage to value herself enough to maybe spend some time with people who didn’t torture or abandon her first?
Hopefully the newest additions to the story line will let us see Ryls being treated with respect without being derided, hurt, used or abandoned first. After all, apparently she will die without the douche bags, so having some of them be redeemable would be nice.
I like the story enough to want to read the next book... I just don’t know if I can deal with another wimpy pushover scene from the all powerful tough ‘until she gets wet’ Phoenix.
🤯Can someone please tell me how in the fuck did the fact that these 5 douche bags left her in the jungle to DIE!!!! Knowing she was their mate and thinking she was human and would legit be DEAD! TWICE! Like DEAD DEAD ☠️ In book 1. And before you say they didn’t…. Yes they fucking did.
🖕🏻Now we are getting their reason and it was to protect her!???? What!? How is leaving her for dead protecting her! Ok so after they found out she couldn’t die I can see that. But not before. Before that they were willing to leave her for fucking DEAD! For the sake of their careers it was a sacrifice they were willing to do.
🖕🏻Now it’s cause they were gonna protect her!? From what? She would have FUCKING ☠️ DIED!
🖕🏻Poorly done! Fuck these men so far there is no saving them in my eyes. Maybe the author thought it was cute cause she would regenerate and didn’t think ahead when she would mate w them and when the readers would have to forgive their cruelty. THIS IS NOT CUTE ITS FUCKING STUPID TO THE MAX
🖕🏻Fuck this shit if you wanna do this at least do it right and don’t make it so that the heroine HAS to mate with these douche fuckers or she will..DIE! Or they will die? Basically if they don’t mate they both die. 🙄
🖕🏻Also where the fuck is the grovel?! Oh yeah right it’s not fucking there yet! At least not in this book and I’m so over how this has played out that I just don’t know if I will continue on at this point. The story line is picking up so maybe I better get some freaking grovel 😤
No OW NO bully No OM Some torture and experimentation on the h No cheating
I read this hoping there would be major groveling or something to redeem the guys from their actions in the previous book. Nope. There was nothing of the sort.
Sure, the guys are “sorry” for how they treated FMC. They give her a lame apology and a piss poor excuse for treating her badly. What they don’t have an excuse for? Leaving her to literally die when they didn’t know she could regenerate. They even knew she was their mate and it didn’t matter! Who leaves their mate to die just because they don’t want a bond? Monsters, that’s who.
If she was a regular human, like the guys thought, she would have been dead forever due to their treatment and neglect. FMC never even mentions that part. No one mentions that part.
That’s not even mentioning all the times she saved their life, only to be subsequently mistreated and left to die. None of that is stuff I’m willing to forgive easily…or at all.
I really like her new mate, Trevor, the Griffon. The jaguars can all jump off a cliff as far as I’m concerned. I won’t be continuing this series.
Hilarious. Of course😅 A clumsy Phoenix shifter that dies in all sorts of obnoxious ways and has an ever growing harem? Count me in for all the ensuing shenanigans.
Ryls is hilarious. As is Imp (Imp is my personal favorite). I LOVE the confetti🤣😂
I'm ready for the jaguars to grovel. I love Trevor and have an obsessive affection for Xerxes which is not helpful when he seems far too good to be true🙈
These books are short, sweet, hot af, and facepalm funny.
This book was promising to me after the 1st, but fell so far from the mark its crazy. Not only is everything happening with Ryls a far stretch from reality (even for a book focused on magic and supernaturals) but all the added sub plots gave me whiplash!
From more mates appearing out of nowhere. Ryls sudden immense power level and control over that power when she's had no training? A random wolf shifter 'guide' that's supposed to be a helping hand to Ryls (with a lifetime of training from ancestors that are all knowing of phoenix shifters?) A lab that is ‘top secret’ and hunting powerful shifters for experiments, holding on to these shifters for decades, and only to be found after Ryls is taken? Getting a hint of Ryls past and that what she knows about her life isn’t true, and she must now ‘learn the truth’. To her having more power than any other phoenix shifter before her and a spirit animal that is a cause of concern by her guide. The random concern of double crossing agents which just so happened to be the ‘true’ cause of concern in the 1st book for her mates not to accept her? And then finally, the fact that mates of the phoenix shifter have to mate her or they all die, her included? (this was never mentioned before her guide showed up, so I’m lead to believe, that it’s just a phoenix thing?)
There’s still more that I can’t remember, so many little things that add up once you start to realize that nothing in this book makes sense. I think the author was trying to weave a great story that would keep readers on their toes, but that didn’t happen. I’m really surprised that this book has so many high reviews. At this point I’m not even concerned with the next book in the series. From the way this one ended it seems to be taking yet another turn, and I don’t think I can handle anymore randomness like what was is this book.
I’m not trying to drag the author down or talk crap about their work. But if everyone just leaves a good review because some aspects of the book were good/ok, or because they feel that work deserves praise because someone put a lot of effort into it, then no author would know where to grow and how to be a better writer. Maybe I’m in the minority here, since there are so many high reviews, but I just couldn’t find an aspect of this book that I liked.
Klutz: Phoenix Heat is the second installment within the But Did You Die? series.
If you thought our main girl died hilariously in the first book, just wait for all her deaths in this one. It's a good thing she is phoenix because the ways she dies are just eye roll worthy. If there was anyone in the world that deserved to live within a bubble, it would be her. I still think she would find some weird way to die within that bubble though.
Other than that, we do see her start to get close to some of the guys a bit more. They still have lots of groveling to do though. Like a lot more because they treated her like crap in the first book. I'm also really starting to enjoy Imp because she's hilarious. Plus, watching Ryls grow more into her powers has been fun too, but I definitely want to see more mating please!
I loved this one. I can't believe what this poor girl goes through. Dying isn't fun and hell the mate are just to die for. I can't wait to read the next one.
4.5 stars. Still loving it. This book was just a little too action packed for my tastes. Action scenes make my eyes glaze over and skip along the page of their own accord. But. I really appreciated Ryls’ inner dialogue and clumsyness. It made it much more entertaining for me. And I’m happy the guys are getting better.
2,5* Some parts like the humor I liked a lot, same with a couple of main characters. The whole sex thing with different mates I didn’t like. Like how can you find another mate and having sex within 5 minutes without wanting to know each other’s names at least?
This book also ends in a cliffhanger like the previous book.
I DNFed this series about 40% into book 4, so this is my review of the series up to that point.
The story has an interesting premise, but there are so many plot holes that you can’t make it to the next scene without wondering what happened.
The men are paper thin and indistinguishable, and Ryls is just a strange heroine. She doesn’t curse—for no reason other than it’s supposed to be funny? She doesn’t have a clear motivation or goal, but yet get overly confident about her powers when she didn’t even know what she was in the first book. The smut was weird and because everyone was paper thin there was no tension or build up. It was a fun ride at first, but then I got very bored.
Phoenix Down ⭐️⭐️ The men are assholes.
Phoenix Heat ⭐️⭐️⭐️ The new men are dreamy.
Phoenix Secrets⭐️⭐️⭐️ All the men are protective and obsessed with her.
So this one was slightly less fun than the last, but I chalk that up to less opportunity for shennanagins. I do feel like forgiveness is given a bit too easily and the explanations given just didn't make sense and weren't good enough. I'm curious to see how this new character will change the dynamic.
I'm not even mad that the author wrote in two more male characters into the story. It's something that usually annoys me when I'm reading a series and have already grown "attached" to the existing leads.
Don't get into this series expecting to feel too much. It's a simple read that can probably even help kick you out of your slump!
Finally near the end of book two we get some more explanation as to why the guys from book one were such dicks. I gotta say they are full of shift and their reasoning kinda only makes me madder so I’m going to look over it. Why? This crazy girl is back, though she does die 999 times, and finds herself with more mates. Mates who want her right away and don’t literally leave her to die in the rainforest. Suffice to say I’m really hoping there’s more groveling to come. All I know is this girl is all powerful and it’s only book two. Actually kinda makes me scared of her and of all the people who are going to want to use her. I’m glad she has new and better mates because I am enjoying these books. The setting is always interesting and the heroine is just so damn hilarious from her inner dialogue to her dying in the simplest ways. Klutz doesn’t even cover this girl, the world really should be afraid.
Still as over the top and ridiculous as book 1 but you know what ? I didn’t mind. On the contrary, that’s what I needed.
Here we basically pick up right where we were left hanging in book 1 (me holding a grudge ? Not at all… 😒😂) at first, I wasn’t sure I would continue with this series. The way the guys treated Ryls in the first book was just too much but I also wanted to say how she would get back up from it all. And I have to say that it’s quite satisfying so far.
Ryls is going through a lot but I can already see some growth in her. She’s so resilient and the way she keeps on collecting mates along the way is just too funny. I also like that she’s making all of her mates work for it and anyone who read book 1 knows they have a loooooot to make up for. Some new characters also popped up and those additions promise some interesting time coming up.
Another cliffhanger in this book but not as brutal so I’m not too mad. I’m really excited for the next book.
I hate writing reviews when I give lower ratings, but sometimes it needs to be done.
I feel that both books in this series try so, so hard to be relatable and funny it just makes it not. And everything happened in such a dramatic way that it got annoying. I understand the the fmc was a klutz (hence the title) but it stopped being funny when the plot couldn’t continue because she was again tripping and falling or bumpy into someone or hitting someone’s privates.
The characters acted like children and were extremely immature so it gave me icky vibes when it got to “steamy” scenes so those had to be skipped. I’ve never been more against the term “fated mates” before reading this either, it was all I could do to not roll my eyes. The fmc rambled constantly and that put a hold on making connections to the books.
So much happened in this book, yet nothing happened at the same time. More mates, yet we don’t get connections with them, it’s “bam you’re a mate, let’s seal the bond now! Oh wow, I met you five minutes ago but I Love You”. That’s also how you learned most things. The fmc had no power and now she’s “Super Powerful and needs ALL of her mates or will die”.

Amaryllis “Ryls”, phoenix
The Shadow: (Jaguar pack) Anzac Dagger Knox Jett Mace
Other mates: Trevor: Gryphon shifter Xerxes, dragon shifter
Ryls is back, this time she’s been captured and held for a month in some sort of testing facility. It is here where she meets, and m@tes a sixth mate, Trevor. It is remarkable to see Ryls grow in power and strength. I have a feeling with each guy added as will be stronger. We also get more insight into why the Shadow originally tried to push her away. Towards the end she meets a seventh fated mate, Xerxes. There was no found typos in this book and I was thoroughly entertained. It’s fun to watch all the dumb ways she can d1e.
This second book in the series is a marked improvement from the heaping pile that was book 1. Dialogue is still a bit cringy at times, but the plot holes are more meteor than Grand Canyon sized. Again, I’m continuing with the series as shifters, fated mates, and “the one” plot line of the phoenix draw me in.
I loved this book as much as the first in the series. It’s a light read that keeps you entertained from start to finish. Can’t wait to read the next book!
I enjoyed book 1 in this series despite how bad the jaguars treated their mate and the bad excuses. It was funny and a little emotional. Anyway, I was looking forward to book 2.
I think I enjoyed this 2nd book better. Yes, the book is short and sweet, I'd actually like it to be longer. We get to meet 2 new mates, and surprise surprise, they don't just immediately treat her badly. Of course our gal also continues to die frequently, and Imp is as feisty as ever.
One thing I'd like to say, no explanation in this book ever justified or made the abuse and neglect in the first book ok. Trying to protect somebody never results in trying to leave them behind in the jungle where they could die. It doesn't make you ignore them when they break bones and or leave them to starve, all of those things which they did when they thought she was human. I know authors like to think up terrible things for their characters to experience, but in relation to romance books, you want the reasoning to provide justification to warrant forgiveness ... and Mace's excuses provided in this book still fell flat. In order to enjoy the rest of the book and series, I'm going to have to ignore that part.
I try my best not to be harsh when reviewing books but honestly this book is trash.
The FMC is just so flakey and irritating, i thought maybe she’d grow a backbone in this book but no.
The MMC’s are just awful, I don’t mind a bit of bullying IF there’s some epic grovelling but there wasn’t, just a half arsed explanation. How she can want to be around these guys is beyond me - they thought she was a human and would of quite happily left their human mate in the jungle because ‘it’s dangerous to be around them’ sounds like she’d die either way right? No need to be utter d*ckbags.
I don’t mind large harems but I like the relationships to develop naturally, she literally met Trevor (also WTF Trevor is not a sexy name!!) and sh*gged him and fell in love. Even Trevor was flakey he was all “I’m gonna kill those guys for how they treated you” and then no less than 2 pages later he was all “you should hear them out, i feel sorry for them” LIKE BITCH PLEASE!
I’d honestly prefer the books to be a bit longer and have that character development, let the relationship come naturally - let’s be honest in the last book, they’re all gonna bang and she’ll end up pregnant, oh and take down the evil corporations - YAWN
This is a fun and funny series. The "klutz" stuff where the fmc is dying every other page is getting a bit old but I just skim past that stuff, hoping there is some bigger plot point coming for why she is so clumsy, such as rapidly growing or unstable powers. In general, Ryls, the fmc, is likeable character with relatable responses to the things that happen to her. The guys are unique, smexy, alphahole's. This is shaping up to be a large harem which I don't prefer but I'm two books in and not having too much trouble distinguishing the guys, plus I'm intrigued to learn more about Ryls and why she has so much power at such a young age. I'll definitely be snagging book three when it comes out.
DNFFF!! I shouldn't have read this after my dislike of the first one so I blame me for this painful, awkward ans cringe read. But I thought it could not get worse... boy was I WRONG!
The book is shorted and 3 more guys are added??? Seriouslyyy whyyyy do authors do this? You dont finish knowing the characters enough ans if you are adding more it gets attention away from them! Not to mention it makes them irrelevant ans boring... I was so looking foward to more cat purring and snuggles but no. Let's cut that short and move on to other creatures... ugh! Why not just write new books feaguring a mix :(
So I loved the first part of the book! And then it went down hill, into 'did not finish'-wally. How is leaving your mate to die in the jungle, to save her from a potential threat logical??? Or even emotionally motivated?? Anf then the monolouges... they are always the downfall of a good consept!! I could have maybe gotten over it, but she died twice, had she not been a phoenix, they would have their mate die. "Sorry I did it to protect you" is not acceptable groveling.
