Miss Henrietta Whiston could only be considered unlucky. She didn’t seek out misfortune, but it always seemed to find her. When her sister asks her to engage Lord Charles so she may entertain two suitors of her own, Henrietta is reluctant, despite finding herself intrigued by this man who loves antiquities.
Laura Beers is an award-winning author. She attended Brigham Young University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Construction Management. She can't sing, doesn't dance and loves naps.
Laura lives in Utah with her husband, three kids, and her dysfunctional dog. When not writing regency romance, she loves waterskiing, hiking, and drinking Dr Pepper.
Engaging Lord Charles is my favorite story in this series.
The story starts out with Lord Charles finding Henrietta in a tree. She had fallen and dirtied her ball gown at the Ball they were attending. Lord Charles comes upon her hiding in the tree in the garden.
They chatted for a bit before he helps her out of the tree. This is the beginning of a wonderful courtships. I loved all the characters, and the story was very good.
I love Laura Beers' Regency books. I'm especially enjoying the Proper Regency Matchmakers series. Henrietta Whiston is one of those unfortunate young ladies that trouble seems to find. Such as stepping outside for fresh air, slipping in the grass and getting her ball gown muddied. Just falling down in sight of others would set tongues wagging so having mud on her ball gown could be social death and the end of the Season for her. Which I doubt she'd mind, as she's not your average tittering young lady. This is why Lord Charles finds her hiding in a tree upon their first meeting.
Lord Charles Brooksbank is taken with Miss Whiston, as she's unlike the other young ladies who are pretty but can't seem to have intelligent conversations. He starts spending time with Henrietta when his friend is interested in Henrietta's older sister, and asks him to come along for moral support. When Henrietta's parents suddenly want her to marry a cousin she's never met, Lord Charles and Henrietta decide to have a fake relationship so her parents will send the cousin away. Because trouble finds Henrietta, things don't go as they've planned.
I loved Lord Charles and Henrietta together. They were perfect for each other even if they couldn't see it. Of course there are misunderstandings between the two of them because of a lack of communication on both of their parts. Lord Charles is a good man and is always there to help Henrietta when she finds herself in tight situation. I loved how his family readily accepted her, and I liked her relationship with her sister, although her sister drove me crazy with her silly reasons for choosing a titled gentleman over love.
This is a sweet romance and I can't wait to read the next book in the series. I received a complimentary copy to review. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Such a fun book. I love books written by this author. There is always a fun story involved. You can count on a strong woman character, a fun little adventure, and a clean romance. This book is no exception. I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from the publisher and am voluntarily reviewing it.
The story takes off as we meet the unconventional h Miss Henrietta Whiston sitting up in a tree at a ball. She has a big personality and seems to get into different circumstances that could ruin her Season without even trying. In many of this situations an intriguing gentleman steps in to help her out, Lord Charles Brooksbank. Miss Henrietta doesn't look forward to seeing Lord Charles because it seems she is always in an embarrassing situation around him. When her sister begins seeing a friend of Lord Charles, she is asked to come along to outings as he tags along with them.
Lord Charles has been introduced before in this series as he is the brother Roswell Brooksbank, the Marquess of Bideford. He has guarded his heart after the woman he was interested in married someone else. Lord Charles has a business that deals in antiquities which he loves to write about and discuss. Unfortunately there are few women who are interested in that topic and to his surprise Miss Henrietta enjoys the topic. I loved his caring personality as he made decisions to help Miss Henrietta's reputation.
This story continues the series that began with the matchmaking sisters. They are mentioned as Lord Charles considered going to them to help him find a wife. Instead the circumstances surrounding Miss Henrietta and her ruined reputation seem to be the thing that brings about a match between these two.
I'm looking forward to the next story as it seems to involve the sister of the Brooksbank brothers.
I received a copy of this book from the author and this is my honest unbiased review.
Lord Charles Brooksbank finds himself in a predicament. For once he is jealous of his brother's happiness in marriage. He has not thought of marriage for himself but now seems drawn to the idea. The idea of finding a intriguing wife among a bunch of simpering misses does not sit well for him. However, he meets a different sort of girl ironically in a tree. Intrigued by her, he is fortunate to meet her again later and finds himself wanting to know her better. Little does he know that helping a damsel in distress leads to the woman who may very well be the perfect match for him.
Miss Henrietta Whiston has a hard time staying in the lines of society. Part of her wishes to be free of the rules of society. She always manages to land herself in embarrassing situations that break those rules. She is grateful for the assistance of a kind gentleman, and is dismayed to find that he keeps coming around to see her. She finds herself drawn in by Lord Charles as he proves time and time again that he can help her overcome the incidents that befall her. Suddenly, she is in over her head in love with him and knows he only is being kind to help her.
This is a regency romance that is clean and has sweet moments. Henrietta and Charles create a sweet friends to love romance. I enjoyed seeing how much Charles was willing to go to protect his friend from the things that befall her. I thought it was sweet how their relationship evolved to where they knew they loved one another even with the help from their family.
A five star story in a five star series! Laura Beers has a talent to develop real characters set in the regency era. Loved this so much I read it in one afternoon!

I love these books. They are so fun to read and the characters are engaging. Completely clean with no bad language. I highly recommend the entire series and am counting down the days until Emma’s story!
Henrietta and Charles are meant for each other if only they could see it. A fake courtship turns real when a second cousin comes on the scene to marry Henrietta. There is great dialogue between the Henrietta and Charles and their feelings grow for each other as they share similar interests and make each other happy. A believable relationship between Henrietta and her sister. They act like true sisters giving each other advice and not agreeing. Advice that is very helpful as it turns out. A really enjoyable story.
Romance sweet, period; series but stand alone read. Sweet romance between Henrietta and Charles. What starts out as a relationship of convenience for Henrietta to ward off an unwanted suitor builds to something much sweeter for them both. Doubts, miscommunication and Henrietta’s greedy suitor along with Charles realizing that this friendship was much more than friends. Sweet ending and lovely fall. More of a 3.5 for me as a reader.
Henrietta-sitting in a tree, K I S S I- opps wrong story! I thought the intro (cute meet) of this book was so adorable. I knew right away I would love Henrietta. And Charles— be still my heart! The storyline is fun and entertaining, the characters sweet and swoony. A clean wholesome regency romance for the win.
This was a sweet and clean story about lord Charles and how he meets the girl who eventually captures his heart. There are some misunderstandings and an interfering cousin that must be dealt with before they come can reach their happy ending
A wonderful, romantic, and engaging story! I did not want to put this book down! This is a fun, thoroughly engaging book that has you smiling right from the start. After all, how many books start with a young woman sitting in a tree to hide the mud on her dress? Charles is bored with the London season. The women he meets may look pretty but their conversation lacks luster and he finds them dull. Leaving the ballroom for some fresh air, he wanders to a bench in the garden. As he sits considering his lonely existence, he hears a rustling above his head. Looking up he sees a young woman, Henrietta, hiding in the tree so as not to be seen in her muddy dress. After leading her to a walkway that would take her unseen to the front of the house, he returns to the ball realizing he will probably never see her again. Little did he know that the next day he would be in her home with his friend who wants to court Henrietta’s sister. Take the two couples mix in a notorious rake, a money hungry second cousin, a pretend courtship, and the gossiping ton and you have a story that will pull you in and make you keep saying ‘just one more page’. A great read.
I loved reading Charles’ story. Henrietta is a bit different from most society girls and keeps getting herself into situations that could spell disaster. I loved her. Read this book and enjoy their story.
I have always enjoyed reading any book I pick up by Ms. Beers and this one was no different. She writes well-crafted, fun stories, with strong female leads, and I have to say, I'm especially loving this series! Henrietta is one of those girls where trouble and misfortune always seem to find her. Such was the case when she stepped outside for some fresh air and slipped and fell and got mud on her ballgown. That's why her first meeting with Lord Charles is in a tree, where she is hiding to save herself from scandal. Charles is quite taken with her and enjoys spending time with her, and even agrees to have a fake relationship with her when Henrietta faces the threat of being married off to a cousin she's never met before. It was quite fun to see the relationship between these two grow. They were such a sweet couple. Of course misunderstandings and miscommunications initially get in the way, but I really loved how Lord Charles was always there for Henrietta and willing to protect her from her misfortunes. An absolutely delightful, sweet, and clean Regency romance that is sure to make your heart flutter. I would absolutely recommend this and all of the books in the series!
I received a complimentary copy from the author and am voluntarily leaving my review.
First off I really appreciated a clean regency romance and this certainly was that.
I gave it only 3 stars for 2 reasons: 1) the writing doesn't flow well. It is very stilled and formal. The conversations wree too formal most of the time. Even within the family. Using the terms "I'm pleased to hear that", even back then within families people didn't speak like that. And then there was the overly casual "that I am" type phrases, used by the heroine as well as the make characters periodically. That was a very uncommon phraseology and stands out. When it is used consistently by 1 make characters it works well, butt throwing it in randomly with different characters just doesn't seem natural. Watch or read Jane Austen or Georgette hayer for smooth flowing dialog.
2) the plot was a bit boring. , However had the writing Benn better I may not have felt the plot was as slow and lacked creativity.
There is potential here, but the writing style really needs improvement.
Lord Charles needs a woman of substance. He didn't expect to find her hiding in a tree.
Henrietta is an unconventional character. She doesn't want to behave as a "proper" young lady should. She is embarrassed when she meets Lord Charles, but he is kind and helps her escape a ball so no one would see her muddy dress.
The plot of this novel is fun to read. Charles and Henrietta hit it off as friends until they find they have a lot in common. Both deny their attraction for a while, it is cute reading about their meetings, their plans, and keeping Henrietta's sister from the clutches of a rake.
This story will make you laugh. Henrietta is a fantastic character and Charles is not far behind.
If you are looking for a book that will entertain you, this is a good one.
Source: I received a complimentary copy. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
I have really enjoyed all the books in this Regency Matchmakers series, and Engaging Lord Charles was no different. This book is so good!!
This book has so much to love in it - a unique heroine, a kindhearted hero, a villainous second cousin that deserves a facer or two, an awesome cast of other side characters that you can't help but love, rides through Hyde Park, strolls through gardens, the sweetest romance.....seriously, what is there not to love here??
Henrietta and Charles really are the cutest couple. I loved watching their relationship grow as they became friends and as they eventually fell in love. They were so perfect for each other. If any characters deserve a happily ever after, it's these two.
If you haven't read this book yet, it definitely deserves a spot on your TBR lists. I have spoken.
Summary: Henrietta is under pressure from her family to marry so her sister may be presented to society. When her mother insists she marry her cousin to speed the process, she enters a fake courtship with her new friend Lord Charles but they both start to have true feelings for one another instead.
Thoughts: I was so excited for Charles’ turn in this series and this did not disappoint. I absolutely loved the meet cute element here which is usually not my favorite trope.
Henrietta was so refreshing and I love the emotional journey she goes on with her family and finding her own worth.
As in the other books, the author balances growing romance, a hint of suspense and miscommunication between the couple so well.
I love Laura Beers’ books and this matchmaking series but this didn’t quite match up to the others. Plus I’m confused why this is part of the matchmaking series when neither main character used the matchmaking services. They mentioned the matchmaker two or three times. 🐎 Henrietta wants to marry for love and isn’t the conventional lady of the ton. She escapes a ball to get some fresh air but becomes muddy with a ripped dress and Lord Charles helps her escape to not be ruined. 🐎 It’s a great meet cute and is pretty original but the author keeps up the “women who climb trees” in almost every story. The plot and pacing are good but the formal conversations were becoming encumbered. As well as “bobbed” their head. Just tiny little things I’ve picked up reading Beers other works. 🐎 A sweet marriage of convenience/fake dating story. Which I think more fake dating could’ve been used or different locations. There’s the drawing room/parlor, garden and going riding. I think other events could’ve helped the characters to get to know each other and break up the monotony. 🐎 I was given an e-arc copy by the author and these are my own thoughts and opinions.
I loved this book!!! I know when I pick up a book written by Laura Beers that I am going to love it. Her characters are so engaging and fun. Henrietta is an independent woman that knows, and will speak her mind. She loves to climb trees and is generally unconventional. Charles is bored with the women of the ton. He wants a woman that will challenge him and that he will be able to have a stimulating conversation with that is not about the weather! When Charles meets Henrietta at a ball it is anything but conventional. I would highly recommend this book.
This was a cute story. I liked how both Henrietta and Charles were only trying to help someone they cared about and weren’t trying to fall in love. I loved how they had similar interest and were able to develop a relationship based on mutual friendship. I liked how their romance took time and it help her sister to see that love was possible. I have enjoyed this series and thought this was well done.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
Being prone to disaster was just the way life happened for Henrietta. She was trying to be discrete when she happened upon a couple in the garden on the first ball of the season. She stepped off the path and slipped in the mud fell and ruined her ballgown. Not wanting to be seen accidentally, she decided to climb a tree. That is where Lord Charles discovered her. He had never met a lady in a ballgown in a tree before and was happy to lead her the back way to the carriages so she could go home without being seen. That was the night he met the unconventional Henrietta.
A witty story of a couple who do not fit into what society would call acceptable. I laughed at the antics of the heroine and loved how the hero was kind and accepting.
A great stand alone continuation of the series. The author creates characters and plots that draw the reader into her world.
I recommend reading in sequence for a fuller background of other characters in the stories. I look forward to reading the next in the series.
Charles, though broke hearted in an earlier book in this series, gets his chance
I liked Charles and Emma. I knew he was not right for his earlier choice of wife as she did not get it about his love of historical artifacts.....but then he got a chance to know Henrietta. Poor Henrietta gets herself in to trouble , unwittingly, but she makes Charles very happy. I loved this story of the tree climbing, politics talking Henrietta!
Loving story of two people very different from the norm of the tun finding each other and falling in love. All in the midst of her sisters fourth season Henrietta is ruined twice over by two different kinds of snakes. Highly recommended for all readers.
Laura Beers is a expert on the regency era. This story should satisfy any lover of historical romance. The characters are real and interesting and I highly recommend this book.
I loved this story so much!! I was smiling the whole time I read it. I’m so glad Lord Charles got his own story. Him and Henrietta are just perfect for each other. I’m looking forward to Emma’s story. *I received an arc all opinions are my own*
I enjoyed the characters of this book, but the writing voice isn't my favorite. I feel like the dialogue is a little short and repetitive with the way they complain about the conflicts. It's sweet and clean. You don't really get the matchmakers in this book. They are just mentioned in passing.
What I like is she leaves private the bedroom. I feel l get the to know the characters and can imagine the surrounding s. I will continue to read Laura Beers.
Such a fun book! I absolutely live Henrietta and her fun personality. I lobe how unconventional she is and how kind. I also enjoyed getting to know more about Charles since he is mentioned in other books. Such a good read!
