While this gave a decent overview to Gandhi's early life, the pacing on this book was strange. We spent a lot of time on his growing up (and even then it wasn't necessarily presented in chronological order which I found confusing), but then suddenly he's an adult and doing hunger strikes and then he dies. Way too much glossed over. I wonder sometimes in books of this nature if the author is worried about talking about hard stuff with kids, and so they take what's easy to present, and neat and clean, but don't bother with the rest. I mean there wasn't even any mention of the Salt March at all. *shakes head* This was disappointed and while it might not be bad as an introduction because it's so easy to read, I think there have to be better books on Gandhi out there.
A simple 48 page biography of Mohandas Gandhi, 1869-1948. Educated in India, Law degree in England, returned to India to reform the caste system and give rights to “Untouchables”. Out of respect for this peaceful reformer of India’s culture, he became known as Mahatma, “great soul”.
When my daughter and I were previously looking for information on Gandi very few picture or small chapter books were available at our public library, and only very lengthy documentaries on youtube.com. Thankfully the other day I was searching through our school library shelves and I found this informative and interesting picture book biography. Other than skipping ahead rather quickly from his time studying in England to peacefully protesting later in life, this was a great read about this amazing man whose works still reverberate through numerous regions and cultures.
Would have liked to learn more, but for a children's book it gave enough information. Still amazes me that those known for their passive resistance are murdered by violence.
