Will their self-reproach hold them back from living fully …

This year is a revelry of new authors, which is awesome and for the voracious reader I am, exhausting.
I have seen the prequel novella pass by, and even have it somewhere stocked on one of my e-shelves, but the schedule was not good for me to read it.
But now with two months locked at home and almost as many to see coming, I allow myself much more freedom in my reading schedule, and straying I do.
So here I am.
Hazel close brush with death turned her world upside down, leaving her drowning in her survivor’s guilt. Worse, she feels constricted by society, family’s expectations and dictates. She longes to flap her own wings but rules and propriety bar her from being truly free.
She might have grew up in a rather unconventional environment, she is still a woman, which leaves her with much less flexibility than a man, and discretion must be her leitmotiv.
While on his side, Jonathan struggles too to find a way out of a predicament of his own making. He chooses a path as a young boy to provide for himself outside the workhouses and mills but it meant also walking a thin line out of the law’s path. But as a grown man it does not have anymore the same appeal, even more as he wants to protect his orphaned younger brother from the same life.
Hazel intrusion in his life makes him dream for something he believes could never be. She is no lady but still a gentry miss much loftier than a boy from the rookeries.
Unexpectedly, both will accept the other for its dreams and never judge their past.
A fun romance outside the ballrooms, where right and wrong were mostly a personal view.

Jemma Frost’s “All Rogues Lead To Ruin: A Curvy Girl Victorian Romance” is Book 1 in the The Garden Girls Series. Jemma Frost is a new author to me and I look forward to reading more of her work.

Leaving behind the pain of the past behind her, Hazel Taylor takes advantage of an opportunity to work in Victorian Manchester as a librarian. Can she truly ever travel far enough to outrun the traumatic past that haunts her? She suffers from survivors guilt and wants to get as far away as she can. With a sense of adventure and a longing to make the most out of her second chance at life and in some small way honor her parents she’d announced to her dismayed sisters her plans to leave their country home. This position at the library gives her the chance to follow her dream and finish writing her children's book. Hazel is adventurous, stronger than she thinks, intelligent and kindhearted, not given to only a life of marriage and children. And so against her sisters wills and social mores of her time she strikes out on her own.

Jonathan Travers hates his job as a debt collector for a notorious gang leader, especially since becoming guardian to his brother. He wants out, but his plan of transforming an old building into a safe haven for the poor people of Devil's Haven is taking longer than expected. Beneath the surface exterior Jonathan is a good, man with good intentions only marred by the choices of his youth and situation. Meeting Hazel gives Jonathan reason to believe there’s a better life out there for him and that the choices of his youth don’t have to define him. She brings hope and life to his dreams and together they can make their dreams count for something more.

Hazel and Jonathan bring out the best in one another. It was so good to see them grow and blossom and to witness the maturity they developed together. I admired their courage and determination to overcome their circumstances and their desire to become better version of themselves. I enjoyed this story and look forward to reading the beginning of the series.

Thank you Ms. Frost for this wonderful of life changing love.

Hazel is eager to leave her painful past behind in the country and start a new life in the bustling city of Manchester. She finds a job as librarian and she’s determined to publish a children book. Life is tough in the slums of the big city, but she wants to help poor children enjoy their free hours after work. And the handsome brother of one of these children is surely an added benefit to her charitable work…
Jonathan is a gang member, but he wants to change his life for his little brother’s sake. And the inconvenient attraction for an enticing little librarian may just be the motivation he needs to break free from his past…
An entertaining book from a promising new author. The book has an interesting plot, the hero being part of a gang and quite active in it, even if he wants to change. There’s some on-page violence, but not particularly graphic. His internal struggle is well described, even if I would have liked a little more angst. The heroine is endearing and very lovable. They are two broken people in many ways and their path to happiness must go through acceptance of the past and change for both. The writing is good, though sometimes it lacks… something. Maybe a little feeling, in my personal opinion. Nonetheless, I was engrossed in the reading and I didn’t want to put it down. I also have great expectation for the next books, because I liked Hazel’s sisters quite a lot.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

2.5 stars rounded up. The setup for this book seemed right up my alley, and I quite enjoyed the first book in this series, but I just couldn't really get into this one. I like class differences, heroes from the streets, heroines who care about others, writers, teachers, children in supporting roles, etc. This could have easily been 4 stars for me. But the character growth and plotline were simplistic, and the dialogue seemed very trite. I wish readers/editors had just pushed back/questioned the author a bit more through her writing process, I think several things could have been made stronger with some further reconsideration. It might have tightened the whole things up and made it feel a bit more believable. Both of the main characters seemed less than adult in their decision making, emotional maturity (double for the heroine), and dedication to their work. I ended up liking the hero decently despite that, but the heroine seemed so childish that it kind of put me off her. This book is definitely higher than average steam, which is a plus for me, but is definitely something potential readers should have a heads up about. I will say sometimes an author's attempt at dirty talk can be sort of comical, but I thought she totally pulled it off here.

Hazel moves to Manchester to work in a library and to write her children's book. In the meantime, she reads to some children from a less-than-affluent area. One of those children is Jonathan's brother Pete. Jonathan works as a debt collector, the kind that crushes bones and causes great pain if money is not forthcoming. He thinks Hazel is way beyond his league but they find themselves bonding, to the extent that she might get ruined. Hazel dreams of becoming a famous children's author because she hopes that achieving something great would subdue her survivor's guilt over an accident in which her parents perished. Jonathan wants to leave the debt collecting job but his boss doesn't want to allow him his freedom.

The emotional arcs of the characters didn't give me a lot of feels but I enjoyed the set-up and the way these were all ordinary people, nobody was insanely rich and yet they found happiness. The writing flows nicely and it is for the most part very well edited. Steam level: Premarital shenanigans.

A Victorian Story

Jemma Frost is a new author for me. Her book is "All Rogues Lead to Ruin." It is a Victorian Romance novel with a cast of characters that are not high class society. This is supposed to be the first of 4 books about the Garden Sisters from a middle class family in a small village in rural England. The youngest of the sisters is Hazel who wants to write children's stories. She decides to leave home for a bigger city with a job which will give her time to write her stories. Jonathan is a man involved in what could be called the rackets as a collection thug. He is from the worst of the slums where he had lost his parents early and had taken care of his small brother for years. When he and Hazel meet, he is intrigued and therein lies their story. This is the theme of novel. How does a "bad man" become a good man? It is not a long story but it has a good cast of characters, redemptions, villians, and a look into Victorian life for those born and living as the working poor. I give it 4 stars.

Hazel decides to move to Manchester to follow her dream of being an author. Working in a library she meets the vicars daughter and starts going to the Rookery to start reading to children. Jonathan is a rogue, working in a gang collecting debts for Lucien. Jonathan wants to clear his debt with Lucien and follow his own dreams of running an boarding house and give his brother Pete all the advantages he didn't have. When Jonathan meets Hazel he is drawn to her. A friendship develops slowly and when Hazel needs him - he is always there for her.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this engaging, entertaining and compelling story. I really loved how their dreams became reality and they did it together. The story is well written, fast paced, with lots of chemistry between Hazel and Jonathan. There's lots of action, drama, angst, passion, friendship, trust, love and support. There's an epilogue and a HEA 💓

Ooo lala! Such a yummy story. Hazel left the country and moved to the city of Manchester, where she planned to work in the library, finish writing her children’s book and have it published. Jonathan was trapped as the crime lord of Manchester’s right-hand man. Circumstances conspired to bring them together. Hazel is a ray of sunshine. She’s smart, clever, loving and kind….and has a wonderful way with the neighborhood children. Jonathan has a hard exterior with a soft center. He wants to be helpful to the people of his commubnity rather than perpetuate the terror that the crime lord has instilled. This story has gutteral and steamy moments which add a feel of authenticity, considering the book’s setting. His gruffness and her enthusiasm contribute to a very interesting love story!

Most romances are upper gentry in England. However this one is taken from a lowercase rogue and a (for lack a better term) lower middle class young woman. There are longer romantic scenes than I like. But skipping over those, I really enjoyed the story and the book. Including cameo appearances from Dr. and Mrs. Forrester was a treat from previous books. Life is not always a garden of roses without thorns. Experiencing those thorns is what has formed both Hazel and Jonathan to what they are today. But can they see past the thorns to experience the beauty?
I look forward to more for the Garden Girls.

Following Their Dreams . . .

Hazel Taylor moved to Manchester to work in the library and hopefully finish writing the children’s book she is working on. Jonathan Travers works for a criminal as his debt collector. He wants to do something for the poor if he can ever get away from the life he is living. He doesn’t want his own brother to follow him into that kind of existence.

Hazel is a good person, intelligent and caring. She is good with children. Jonathan comes across as hard, but he is good inside. He wants to give back to people if he can. Will Hazel be able to inspire him to follow his desire to care for the community? Can they encourage each other to follow their dreams? And will they find a HEA despite the difficulties that may intrude?

I enjoyed this historical romance story with all of the characters. The two main characters were Hazel Taylor and Jonathan Travers.

Hazel Taylor has decided to leave her family home. She has decided that  Victorian Manchester library is the place that will help her to write her children book.

Jonathan Travers doesn't like the job that he does. He lives with his younger brother. He has been planning to fix up an old building into a safe haven for the poor people that live in Devil's Haven. But it is taking longer than he expected.

This was a very steamy and emotional romance. It did have a few laughs that had me laughing at. There was quite a bit of action throughout the story.

I received a complimentary copy via Booksprout. This is my honest unbiased opinions.

His sunshine.
This was a beautiful story with charming characters there is some steam but the characters are what kept me reading a bit too late last night. I liked how determined both the hero and heroine were. Things prior had not been so great but both wanted something different and better. Hazel just needs to fly if she hopes to grow. It was a bit sad at first all the problems she had with her family but at 23 it was time. Jonathan has his own demons but the question is will the demons let him go? I enjoyed the action it went right up to the end of the book. This is a book I highly recommend. I did receive a free copy of this book from Booksprout and voluntarily chose to review it.

In an age when women are dependent on men, Hazel has decided to forge her own path. She's always wanted to be a writer and she's moving to Manchester to follow her dream. Jonathan works for a gang leader collecting debts but after he becomes the ward for his brother, he knows he needs to make changes and leave that life behind. Neither of them are looking for love but when they meet and spend more time together, there is an undeniable attraction there. As the story progresses, both characters help the other to see another side of themselves. And there's lots of steam between them.

Hazel Taylor wants to start again in Manchester after the deaths of her parents. They died when they where in a carriage with her, the memories are to hard for her to handle. She goes to work in a library there. She meets Jonathan Travers a debt collector for a notorious gang leader. Their story has suspense, drama, danger, twists, turns, pasts to let go of, villains, and romance. I liked that he called her sunshine. This is a lovely story of a young woman striking out on her own in a time that it was frowned upon. She tries her best to stick to convention but she fails. She does a few things that raise eyebrows. She is getting by until a scandal develops. She ends up with the love of her life though so it all works out in the end. I loved this story line and I will be looking for more books from this author.

I’ve read this series out of order, so this was my second book by Jemma Frost. For me, it took awhile to really get invested in the story. Also, it was billed as a “curvy girl romance,” but I didn’t really see that play out in the book. Overall, it was worth the read, but not my favorite by this author.

Romance between a woman unafraid to go after her dreams and man toughened by life but a sweet heart. Loved seeing these two grow together and find a new path. They unapologetically went for their dreams!!Looking forward to the next in the series!!

This is a new to me author and I am enjoying her stories and writing style. It is refreshing to read a historical romance about normal people and not the aristocracy. The series is about four sisters and I look forward to reading each of their stories.

Can love conquer all? Fate, destiny, adversity?
I love the way Jemma Frost allows us to live with Hazel in her struggle for independence; a struggle that a lot of women faced in 1870 in England.
Convinced that she has been spared in an accident that cost her parents’ life only if she realizes her ambition to be an author of children books, Hazel sets out to Manchester on her own. But fate does not work that way. She will have to live through obstacles and disillusions before reaching the understanding that her life and herself have an intrinsic value all their own.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
