Charlie finally feels like she’s got a bit of breathing room. She’s flush with cash, she and Zoe are moving into a snazzy new apartment, and she’s riding the wave of having solved a murder a few weeks earlier. But when a local woman is murdered and her family hires Charlie to find the killer, she finds herself embroiled in yet another investigation.
However, what Charlie initially thinks might be an easy solve quickly finds her mired in Maui’s seedy underworld, with a victim who led a double life. Finding herself dealing with a suspect list longer than a CVS receipt, Charlie enlists the help of Dot and Rosie to narrow down that list and get a lead on the real killer.
But between Jake trying to keep her out of the investigation, new neighbors who make Ozzy Osbourne look normal, and an attempted robbery at her day job, Charlie quickly finds she’s got her hands full once again. And to make matters worse, as Charlie gets closer to solving the crime, she realizes the killer has another target in mind: her.
Can Charlie bring another killer to justice before she’s turned into shark bait?
A quick and fun read! I enjoyed the mystery in this one more than the first book, I think it just fit better with the characters and the tone set by the author.
The characterization of the secondary roles was a bit spotty, with some people such as Tommy, described well, while other suspects seemed to blend into each other. A few more distinguishing details could have helped set them apart more, as well as some element to truly make them a feasible suspect. Because of the lack of these details, the culprit is easy to identify. That's not always a bad thing, unless you enjoy a bit more of a challenge in honing your own detective skills.
Dot and Rosie are good friends and mentors even though they are much older than Charlie. They are entertaining sidekicks, encouraging and supportive, and I like how they never flaunt their advanced knowledge and reassure Charlie that she has the instincts to do the job.
Jake, the police detective, is another character to watch. He can be a bit aggravating but there's also some underlying interest there on Charlie's part. There just might be the possibility of a future romance if Jake can accept and appreciate Charlie's help in solving crimes.
A relaxing, likeable jaunt with fearless and funny main characters. A nice way to relieve stress and enjoy a laugh!
This series is so fun! I really enjoyed listening to the narration by Khristine Hvam, she has just the right amount of characterization for each character, and I love how she lets the suspense build. this is a great series and I really liked that I had no clue as to the baddie right up to the end. The one thing I missed this time was seeing some progress in the slow burn attraction between Charlie and Jake. There was just not enough Jake in this one.
Charlotte Gibson is back home in Maui after some problems on the mainland. She is living with her mother and working in an ice cream shop, but things are looking up for her. She solved a murder, collected a huge reward and is finally able to afford to get an apartment with her bestie, Zoe, and move on with her life. She has also become a minor celebrity in her community. When the daughter of a tech billionaire is murdered, he hires Charlie to find the killer. Charlie is more than ready to take on the assignment with her senior support staff, Rosie and Dot.
Finding out that the victim was not quite the daddy's little girl her father thought she was leads Charlie into the underbelly of Maui and into some downright dangerous situations. As the list of suspects starts to narrow down, Charlie is sure of one thing: this is a lot more fun than scooping ice cream.
Such a fun read. Charlie is witty and smart, and her friends are the perfect complement to her. The mystery is fast-paced and kept me hooked, laughing throughout the whole story. Highly recommended!
This book was designed to keep you guessing. Enjoyed my time reading this book. I never expected to get so many laughs from the outrageous things Dot and Rosie did. I can't wait to read the next volume. Great writing a must read
Breaking my code of giving a cosy mystery no more than three stars. This was better than the first and she manages to write without a lot of fouls language. I love her unique combination of two old ladies helping her with her investigations! Charlie’s character grows showing she can change her mind about people from what she stereotypes them to be. Engaging little mysteries with a lot of humor!
Charlie once again finds herself searching for a murderer in order to make some money. Of course this time she is actually hired to do the investigating, much to Jake’s dislike. Add in her new apartment with Zoe in the same building as Jake and it’s going to be an interesting time. Rosie and Dot are awesome sidekicks and I look forward to what is next in store for the trio.
Jasmine Webb's Charlotte Gibson Mysteries series is a real hoot. Charlotte, aka Charlie to her friends is a combination of ditsy and smart. Murder mysteries seem to fall in her lap. She goes about solving things methodically one moment and totally scatter brained the next with no planning involved. Her cohorts in solving the crimes, Dot and Rosie are a couple of geriatric seniors who leave you laughing out loud.
Charlie's high jinx are fun and the mysteries are well paced, not too obvious. Septuagenarian sidekicks Rosie and Dot are a hoot with their espionage and computer hacking skills. Many quirky characters. I hope the interplay between Charlie and Jake will soon settle into something more than sniping.
Second book in this series, must say I really enjoyed reading this book. Not only are the characters wonderful, two old ladies, the storyline is fantastic! And the humor is outstanding! On to book three.
I really enjoyed this book even though I did not figure out who the killer was. Dot was the absolute best! She kept me laughing the entire book! Jake got on my nerves a little bit but over all, this book was a cool cozy murder mystery.
Cheese yes, predictable yes, entertaining yes, character development sure, cozy mystery 100%.
This was a quick yet fun read that takes you the island where you find that classic no skills lucky accidental PI trying to solve another murder and attempted murders.
REVIEW OF AUDIOBOOK; APRIL 17, 2025 Narrator: Khristine Hvam 3 and a half stars
I, apparently, listened to this (about a week ago) but I can't recall a thing! My short-term memory isn't what it used to be but, really, it's not this bad. Anyway, I decided to relisten to the last 20% then it came back to me.
Charlie has gotten herself an apartment to share with Zoe and she's beyond thrilled to be able to get out from under mother's constant nagging about finding a nice man. That is, until she comes face to face with her new neighbor a few doors down.
Of course it's our hottie detective, Jake. Neither of them are thrilled to find they are neighbors because Charlie thinks Jake and his partner are "more Keystone cops than Hawaii 5-O" while he thinks he's not paid enough to have to deal with Charlie and her geriatric friends.
Still, there is a little thawing going on inside the detective and he even admits he really doesn't want anything bad to happen to Charlie because of her sleuthing.
As for Charlie, what I like about this series is that Charlie has a reason to go sleuthing. Like the first book, it is someone approaching her offering a nice payment to find out who the killer is so it's not a case of another cozy mystery female busybody by playing amateur sleuth.
How Charlie finds the killer can be easily followed though the identity wasn't a surprise. The Whydunit was pretty simple and if you happened to consider the probable motives it wouldn't be hard to guess the whodunit.
While trying to find an apartment with her best friend and move out of her mom's house Charlie gets an offer from a grieving father to find his daughter's killer. She gets right on the case while still working at the ice cream store.
This book is pretty funny if you like a lot of sarcasm you'll enjoy this, lots of humor. Quote: Phil says "That’s why she dumped him. She didn’t actually come out and say it, but I could read between the lines.” Phil McCracken didn’t look like he could read anything, let alone between the lines, but I let it slide".
Charlie finally moves into a new place with Zoe her best friend only to find the hot cop Jake lives down the hall. He HATES her getting involved in HIS cases and tries to stop her at every chance. She thinks he is hot but annoying and gets in HER way. Jake's partner is awful and tasered her in book 1 so she tries to avoid the cops at every chance.
Charlie finds she has the wrong suspect in the murder she thought she had solved. So she goes back over all the suspects and evidence putting herself in danger.
Charlie is just trying to lead a normal life but murderers keep getting in her way. This time Richard came to her to find who murdered his daughter. The two police detectives were just starting but Liam who is lead refused to look seriously, whereas Jake was really trying to do his job. Rosie and Dot jump on board when Charlie takes the case along with another 100K making her never having to worry about money again. Jake finally starts to show he likes Charlie in the last few paragraphs, so the fun begins. Let's find out what Charlie, Rosie, and Dot are up to next. Love these books
Maui Murder is Book 2 in the Charlotte Gibson Mystery series.
I absolutely loved the first book and was so excited to read the next adventure.
Charlie and her BFF Zoe are moving in to a nice new apartment. She doesn't have much time to enjoy it though when there is a murder and the victim's family hires Charlie to find the killer. This was another great mystery, with wonderfully written characters. I laughed so much. I really enjoy the friendship between Charlie and Zoe.
This is really a great series and I can't wait for more
I love these books- they are such a quick read with an Angela Landsbury flair to them. I rounded up for the 4.5 stars I’d give this. Charlie has been hired again, with the help of Dot and Rosie, the laughs keep rolling. I love the story line and the possible slow burn with Jake, maybe? The characters are interconnected and I’m sure there are some Easter eggs on the story if you look hard enough. Great story. Can’t wait to read the next one!
I like the various recurring characters in these stories, but my only criticism would be to put more time and energy into the villains. They are a bit too one dimensional, and their motives are a little too far fetched to be believable.
Jasmine Webb's Charlotte Gibson Mysteries series is so much fun to read. Murder mysteries seem to keep falling into Charlie's lap. She solves them methodically, and yet at other times, in a crap shoot method. Dot and Rosie, her assistants, are a couple of seniors that leave you laughing with their unique ways of solving problems.
Great read. Funny interesting. The club scene was guestionable for Maui the real scene is more bar then clubs, but it worked for the story. Medication naloxiton( narcan) not Naprosyn for overdose reversal in real life, again the book is fiction so it all works.
Charlie gets her second chance at solving a murder when the woman’s father offers her 100K plus expenses. Of course, Dot and Rosie are all in for the case. A fun cozy mystery.
Who tries to rob you with a plastic knife??? Another murder on the island??? Who killed Jo Lismore and why??? Drugs or something else??? Charlie will figure things out though, won't she??? I enjoyed this story and recommend the book.
This is definitely a series to get in to. The characters are not just likeable but down right funny! So far I've binge read the first two books and can't wait to start the third. I'm sure my family won't mind pizza for dinner lol!
I thoroughly enjoyed the second book in the Charlotte Gibson series. The main character is funny and delightful, I love Dot and Rosie and Zoe and Jake and all the side characters, and the mystery was pretty good.
A fun summer read that requires little thought. The series was a gift to me. Otherwise, I'd pass. I also figured out Who Done It 75 pages before the lead character. If you're a pool-floating reader who just wants something to fill the time, this one's for you.
This series is great! It's a fun, easy to read/listen story with hilarious characters and a plot just twisty enough to keep things interesting. Also makes me so excited to be a crazy old lady some day. Can't wait to see what happens next.
Fun, quick read. Easy to get into, hard to put down. Charlie gets into scrapes trying to solve a local murder with the help of two octogenarian friends.
