Doc was happy with his new life— he’d married Fiala and Sonya, had allies who were steadfastly beside him, and was building the name of Lady Luck. Things were moving in the right direction, and life was good.
Powerful enemies were starting to rise against him. Doc knew that Sheriff Grange and McIan, the preacher of Apoc, would be problems eventually, but the two he had to deal with first were Suez and Goodman. Suez was still a mystery to Doc, and the man had effectively split the town with Goodman. Goodman was a larger concern, being the head of the only bank in town and the mayor of Deep Gulch.
Doc’s lucky strike in the wilds helped give him leverage in town. Using the windfall from his mine, he moved to break the town free from the deep pockets that had it in a stranglehold.
When Lia, Ayla, Sophia, and his wives left town to work on their outdoor knowledge and shooting, Doc was left to mind the Lily and keep healing the wounded. He thought things would be fine, until Spot, one of the deputies, came stumbling in mortally wounded.
Pushing himself more than he should, Doc poured his energy, vitality, and his life into saving Spot. Darkness closed in around him as he used almost everything he had to bring the deputy back from death’s door.
After escaping death by the barest of margins himself, Doc had no idea what was coming for him next, but he had faith that his goddess would help see him through it.
(This book contains adult situations, including but not limited to: sex, gambling, abuse, drug use, harem, and murder. It also contains graphic sex scenes, which portray elements of BDSM. You’ve been warned.)
Daniel James Schinhofen is a self-published author in the burgeoning genre of LitRPG/Gamelit. Book 3 picks up immediately after book 2 as Doc does more healing for his friends and people not tied to Apoc.
From there, the book meanders like a slow moving river, taking twists and turns but never too quickly. The tone reminded me of certain books in the Alpha World series, where there is a lot of loving, caring and sharing as Doc's family grows.
And it does grow, more than doubling by the end of the book depending on how you count things. There are little bits of action here and there, but there is more intrigue, especially in the last 25% of the book.
Grange (the sheriff) is the catalyst but not the reason behind why things change so quickly. I won't spoil anything, but quite a few of the town's leaders move out to greener pastures. The question is why, and who's behind it.
I think (and most definitely hope) the answer is revealed in book 4. I like the Luck's Voice series, but it feels like the town is trapped in amber. Doc and his family is building a base of support, turning it into a town divided, and we rarely get to see what's happening anywhere else.
That's part of the reason things seem to move so slowly. What are Suez doing? No idea. McIan? The same. Which makes the intrusion of people on the darkness side come across as enemies, even when they're not.
Anyway, this is still LitRPG, but there is only one notification (not including the final tally at the end). There is some talk of moving on from Gulch once darkness is eradicated, but at the pace Doc is going, it's going to take him an eon before the entire planet is cleansed.
He's not a fast worker.
I'm still a big fan of Daniel Schinhofen's work, and the thought passed through my mind that the reason the author writes about love, happiness, and friendship is because that's what he values most in his own life. Or wants in his life. Just a thought.
The whole front end is a boring slice-of-life book.
The entire thing is disappointing. Schinhofen's books are good specifically for their characters and the interactions between the varying personalities. This one is all corny relationship things with characters that are practically interchangeable. It was headed this way at the end of book two but I hoped it would find its way. I was disappointed.
A good continuation of the series. This one had more women marrying the MC. Not much action, it was mainly about growing the family and getting things set up for the showdown that has been building for a while now. If you liked the others you will like this one as well.
You're probably wondering why, I wrote another success but only gave 3 stars. There are a number of reasons the first is the nature of the genre, it's unrealistic to an extreme and there are times where the spell or a good novel is broken by the well endowed comments, the constant references to sex, and worship of the mc. Granted, I realize that those are mainstays of any harem novel having read several hundred at this point, however from someone like Schinhofen I hope for more. He's one of the best authors (if not the current best) currently writing in the LitRPG Harem subgenre. His use of imagery, healing and healthy attitudes towards sex, nature, relationships, politics, religion, and good men doing what they must in bad situations are things that keep me coming back for more. He is a masterful story teller whose worlds come alive both on the page and in audio narration. But I can't get over the tropes sometimes and the mc always winning every situation with only some minor setbacks that are meant to be large cliffhangers has been an issue in the last few books of his that I've read. So, while I consider the general character development, world building aspects, the interplay that speaks to a brilliant mind it who can write worlds that I would like to live in, I can't accept that he can't/won't ammend the trope-y nature of this and and make it more realistic.
Whith all of that said this is a genuinely fine novel, it is well written pardoning the tropes and the sex scenes (I'm mostly a ftb type though Schinhofen does a fine job of towing the line between both, not over indulging in chapter long sex scenes that wind up be a good portion of the word count). Also I'm glad he mostly broke his bathing fetish in this one. So what I'm saying is that I like seeing the women insecure, not fighting but also not entirely sure that the whole thing will work, I like the slice of life with the mad hatter and Posy, I also did enjoy that... well spoilers so I won't go there. Point is it's worth reading and reviewing but it was as spectacular as some of his other novels. I greatly anticipate the next book in this series and pretty much whatever he throws out next. So cheers to the next, this was well worth a read.
This book is an excellent addition to the series I highly recommend it and would say to anyone who likes harem novels to just go ahead and pick this up and start reading so why did I not give it 5 stars and the only reason I do not give it 5 stars is because I am a huge fan of BDSM and I know how pets are truly treated as well as slaves and I take exception to how Rosa's character was depicted in this book.
Is especially the scene where the main character kicked her and really abused her in front of another character I know it's part of the story but still the main character should have protected her better or at the very least once the scene was over he should have taken her in his arms and comforted her for what he had to do to her.
As usual another excellent book from Daniel Schinhofen! His ability to draw you into the story and feel the emotions is what makes his books so awesome. It's as if you are involved with the lives of the characters and you must know what is going to happen. I used to be a strictly audio listener because I drive professionally however I can no longer wait that long if Daniel puts a book out I have to read it then if it comes out on audio I get that also to listen when driving. Anyway this story lived up to expectations and is marvelous but of course leaves me wanting more!
I started this series because I enjoyed his other books. This one was fine at the beginning. I found the storyline very original, but now..... Its just another harem story. I don't really mind that except when more then half of the book is spend on it and the original story goes almost nowhere. Now it is not a book about a chosen one saving the world from darkness but a guy who lures females into sex by talk of their rights to happiness and equality for all sexes...Well as long as he is allowed to have many but they will have to be satisfied by only him. Ranting on.... I had such hopes...
I still think this sequel is mostly filler. I think book one had more happen than this. You just have everyone saying "good morning" in this until you get annoyed hearing it. Then nothing really happens till the last half of the book.
I know (or think) that this is a slice of life, but having the protagonist just talking or thinking about smut all the time does not a story make.
At this point I'm just looking to see this end. As the author obviously knows what his readers are complaining about, enough to write about it jokingly in his books, then have his protagonist praise what his readers dislike and thumb his nose at us.
This story is a cross between cultivation, Isekai and a western fantasy. I like the character development in the world building and also how the characters are separate personalities and interact with each other realistically. There is a lot of political intrigue drama fun things and there's a little bit of sexy times as well. This story has a little bit of everything and it is very entertaining for me. I for one will buy the next book when it comes out.
This book could have been so much better. Literally, 80% or so of the book is Doc wooing the women around him to add to his harem followed by entire chapters of either gratuitous sex scenes or characters telling each other how much they love each other. It's so bleeding boring.
The protagonists could have been trying to find the group that keeps trying to hijack the mine shipments. They could have been spying on McIan, Goodman, Grange, and Suez to stay one step ahead. But do they? No, they sit around making goo-goo eyes at each other.
Interesting Harem story, not.an English major but the story is well.written , the the major.characters have depth and well.written personalities but lady luck is slow in building the healing power of the main charactor to.fight the dark power that has taken over the population . It should be interesting to.see how he fairs in future books with 4 wives p!us and much danger since he is and his wives are not.totally human and human society on This wor!d detest none humans and the current t religion is of a.dark power
This author is a rare one in that when he does the series each book gets progressively better. For this series it is the same. I read the book and I am immediately drawn to read the next in the series because I can't wait to find out what happens next. His characters are developed so well that it seems like I know each and every one of them. One of the things I really enjoy is that sometimes he touches on something from one of his other books which I easily recognize and it makes me smile. Highly recommend this author to everyone.
Great story!! Once again the author kept me pulled into his world. His fun Easter Eggs and bits of Americana dropped in were delightful color. He makes you care about the characters and sit on the edge of your seat. Sometimes you scream going NNNOOOO!!! Then of course, you realize, it's a book, the characters can't hear you. Yes, it's that good. I highly recommend this book!!
A lot happens in this volume, but the writing has a relaxed feeling that keeps the story ambling along without feeling rushed or intense. We get three weddings, two funerals, two reunions, a few gun fights, and a load of politicking. The narrative takes it all in stride, neither slowing down nor rushing through any of it. All without a false cliffhanger. Good book and recommended.
Daniel has written a good continuation of the Luck’s Voice series with this one. The expansion of Doc’s harem of wives seemed a bit rushed, personally I would have preferred the increase in wives to have been a bit slower and more natural feeling like the first two. I also really enjoyed side characters finding or rekindling relationships. No cliffhanger ending in this one.
I am still loving the series, mainly because there are some things that I don't know how they are going to play out. But for this book, I felt like there was a lot of info dump. A lot of doubling up on delivery of information. I pretty much skipped most of the sexy scenes. I am still looking forward to the next book, but not as much as I was looking forward to this one.
Ups and downs interest wise but overall I liked it. I was looking for more of a resolution with this town since we're 3 books in and the MC has a mission from his goddess to help bring her to this world. This is going to be a very long series it seems. I was entertained which is what I was after. I'll be looking forward to the next book in this series as well as a few others Mr Schinhofen is writing.
Good, character and plot development was a bit flat.
The authors characters tend to lack dimensionality this was especially on display here. The plot itself didn't move much either till the end. The thing that kept pulling me out was the lack of character agency. Everyone was define by their for or against the protagonist, not their own goals and ambitions. Every Mary Sue this one.
I truly enjoyed the first two books in this series. But it's fallen down the hole of male fantasy to a truly creepy space. As I write this, Cuomo is being told to resign. And I believe him that he does not believe he's sexually harassed anyone. But he's the only one who believes that. And perhaps this author. Who doesn't seem to be able to have a relationship with women if it isn't wildly sexual. Creepy. Just creepy.
This is an excellent installment to continue the story and move life forward! Plans are what we try to fit life into while it races forward and drags us and our plans with it, sometimes they fit and work and sometimes it all blows up and we pick up the pieces!
4.5 for this installment. Very good, but loses a 1/2 star only because I don't feel the end of this one was the right inflection point in the story. Slice-of-life elements are better balanced than in some of the author's other work, possibly due to being a shorter book.
Overall I like this series and this book shouldn't disappoint fans.
Another great read! The story continues where it left off in book 2 and keeps you wanting to read more. This series is amazing and fun to read and this book keeps the series going amazing and gives you want you want in an amazing story! Can’t wait for the next one!
A great series - I love the plot, setting, and characters. There’s a ton of potential for it. This book is good, although a bit more mechanical as it’s about plot progression and setting up the next book for some serious action. Still great to see everyone though, and to see a resolution with Lia. Definitely recommended (16+)
Actually a bit disappointed with this book after how much I like the series and most everything else written by the author. It felt like a good portion of the book was fluff/filler but I did enjoy the book enough to both finish it and I still have hope the next one will be better
Excellent read. Solid character depth. Action adventure romance all of the above included in story. I think the only thing I'm looking for is the Battle between the main character and 1 of the protagonist were they draw guns at noon to settle the score.lol
I love the works of Daniel Schinhofen. While the harem elements can seem as wish fulfillment, overall they portray a family as loving as one hopes every family aims for. Action without bogging down in details, instead the majority of the novel lies in its enjoyable character interactions
I f8nally to the time to read this series and wasn't disappointed. The characters from the Lily were beautiful souls in ugly circumstance. Daniel always does an amazing job of pulling you into the story and causing you to see people as they are without bias. One of my favorite authors
Daniel Schinhofen has done it again. This book was amazing and even though it was 500 pages it seemed like I got through it way too quickly. I guess that’s what happens when a story is written so well that you just get caught up in it. Can’t wait for the next book in this series.
I first came across this author with the first book in this series on audio book. Waited months for the second and got so drawn in to the story that when it ended on a cliffhanger I couldn't wait and bought the third on kindle to see what happened next. It has been years since a story has had me on the line like that.
