IN HER WORDS: I've been a writer all of my life -- it is who I am. I write for myself and always have. The ability to create pictures and emotions with words is such a miracle to me. I read everything; I mean everything! All kinds of books, even encyclopedias. I am fascinated by the written word and I love storytellers. It is a great privilege to be counted one myself. (www.christinefeehan.com)
This book has five star reviews on Amazon and I am just not getting it. Perhaps Christine Feehan has gotten us so accustomed to poorly thought out, overly sexxed books that any improvement is viewed in the same light as a minor miracle. A "return" to her days of writing glory. Sadly, I disagree. Not with vehemence, but sadness. Let me show you why.
Chapter 6, the previous five chapters were spent talking about mist (really excessive descriptions of flow pattern, color, reactions to it,) how tough the ghost walkers are, how conflicted. (So tough one of them gets vertigo, becomes nauseous and has to rest.) Then vegetation (literally, plants, plant descriptions,) lethality between the two protagonists - how they're both dangerous - some self-loathing thrown in. Plus, excessive time admiring each other's looks, sensuality, etc., etc. it isn't that admiring each others looks is a problem, it's when they choose to do it. These are supposedly two dangerous people who have run across each other in the middle of a national forest, they may be enemies, they may end up trying to attack and kill each other, but ... they're not taking it seriously, I guess.
Now there are people coming to get someone, they don't know exactly who, and instead of keeping his eye on the target the lead male protagonist wants to get some. Yeah, that all makes perfect sense and sounds exactly like the kind of thing any highly trained special operator would do if they knew somebody was coming over the mountain to try and capture him, his friends, or the hottie he just met and fell for instantly. (Yeah, this is obviously one of Christine's "pairings" and yet it is out of character for this guy to the extent that in the book he thinks about how out of character it is for him. Absorb that for a second.)
There's a lot of repetition in this book. A lot of pointless description that doesn't move the story forward simply because we already read these things. There is less sex, I will give her that. I didn't have to skip entire chapters of this book because of repeated sex acts. I did skip entire paragraphs of the story because of continuing and repeated descriptions of mist or microscopic examinations of blood.
The female protagonist seems like a sweet girl, but she's a Mary Jane? Mary Sue? Wherever. I'll give her this, at least her quirks are reasonable. She has a reason for the way she feels, and she spends a lot of time trying to figure out why other people are reacting the way they do. In fact, she's entirely reasonable and stable. Maybe more so than someone who grew up in her laboratory circumstances would be. She's very centered, that's a foil for the male protagonist who has anger issues x1000. Or that's the way he's described, but frankly we never see that in the story unless his anger and aggression are actually appropriate to the situation.
There is a lot of talking in this book, back-and-forth between the protagonists and between the protagonists and other characters. That can become problematic in its own way, because some of this dialogue is happening when people are shooting at them or actively hunting them. I don't mean "go here, do that, this person is here," although there's some of that. I mean, well ... they're just talking to each other while being hunted by other enhanced soldiers.
The repetition (am I being repetitious about how repetitious it is?) in this book has given me insight into how a mouse feels running on that little wheel in its cage.
CF has jumped the shark and she's never coming back.
First Impressions Phantom Game is the most recent addition to the Ghostwalker series and this was purely delightful, I had quite a bit of fun with this one. It was quite interesting because we got to see some unique dynamics that we don’t normally see here and I really loved seeing a couple come together like what we have in Jonas and Camellia. We also have some other involvement from some of our old favorites that was the icing on the cake and if you are a fan of the series then you will come to really love how Feehan handled these interactions and see what all of the factors make sense and the manner in which they come together. And there is an overarching plot to the series where we get further answers as well and I really had such a fun time with the quick-witted bantering that comes into play here. I will admit that I didn’t know where Feehan was going to take this story, but I really admired the development of the plot and the depths of growth we see in the romance.
Summary Jonas “Smoke” Harper is a phantom walker and has always felt different from the other and in many ways feels like he is a monster and not worthy of living at times. But seeing the way his brothers have found their mates, he has always had the hope for finding that for himself. When he walks into a garden, he never expected to find his other half and even though he knows that Whitney paired them, he feels a connection to her that no manipulation of genes could develop. She is a woman that steals his breath and inspires him to be a better man. Camellia has always had an affinity for growing nature, she connects to it in a way that is purely magical. She has been on the run from Whitney, hiding a valuable plant that is rare and if Whitney knew of its abilities, would destroy in order to possess it. Camella knows whose compound lives close, including those sisters she developed a bond with as a child. But she is a lone wolf and prefers her solitude. What she doesn’t expect is a male to enter her domain, a man she can’t determine if he is good or not. But when she feels the connection to Jonas, she knows that he is different. But when its discovered that they are all in danger and a team is being sent out to destroy them all, Jonas and Camellia join forces with the others to bring a stop to the force that would murder innocent children with their vendetta. But a powerful love will be formed between Jonas and Camellia, one with epic proportions of desire and true depths.
What I Loved Phantom Walker was such a pure delight and I had such a fun time with this one here. It won’t be a story that you will expect, in some ways, it was quite different but it definitely follows the lines of similar Ghostwalker books so if you are a fan of the series as I am, you will have a good time with this one. It was quite interesting to see this pair come together. I really have always liked Jonas, he has always had an air of mystery surrounding him and I was so happy when I learned that he would be the focus of the story. But we also get some fun stuff with all of our past favorites (if you loved the earlier books in the series you will adore seeing all the characters we get to see like Ryland and Lily, Gator, the Twins and their mates and they all play a vital role) We also get some side action of a marriage drama between Ryland and Lily and I had such a good time with how this played out in the story. I had such a fun time with the romance as a whole between Jonas and Camellia. They are both so unique in their talents, and I especially enjoyed seeing how they build their relationship. They have such strong personalities so it’s not an “all in” from the getgo type of romance. It does take time for trust to be built, and I really liked the slow burn smexy aspect of it. It was quite refreshing in many ways. As for the suspense arch of the plot, I will say that Feehan knocked it out of the park. I was on the edge of my seat throughout so much of the book because I was really curious how our team would fight and defend themselves and some factors built into the story which I didn’t expect.
What I Struggled With There was a couple of things. The pacing was off in some ways and the ending was way too abrupt and I wanted a more detailed focus on solving the crisis that forms between Ryland and Lily as it was built to a crescendo and wanted more from that than what we see at the ending.
Overall View Phantom Game is a fiery hot of a read that is bound to keep you enthralled with the vibrancy of romance, the familial connections of this brotherhood, and the intensity of thrills that will bring such delights to the reading experience of it. FEEHAN DEFINITELY DOESN’T DISAPPOINT.
Christine Feehan has done it again. And it seems that 18 is indeed a lucky number for fans of her Ghostwalker series. Staring Jonas "Smoke" Harper and the soilders of the "flawed" Team One. Doing their best to protect their newly formed compound; located just outside the Lolo Nation Forest. In Central Montana. From a faction of mercenary solders sent to rid the world of the freakishly enhanced. Not knowing that hidden just a few miles inside the aforementioned forest. His mate, one Camellia Mist. Is living in a hidden glade of her own fashioning. Surrounded by the beautiful Middlemist Red variety of the flower for which she is named. And it's secrets... Secrets that both she and her counterpart share. Secrets that could ultimately save the lives of those they love. And work to heal wounds of Camellia's tortured past.
While the demons that haunt Jonas prove all to real. When he is confronted with the sins of his past. When facing the brother of his fallen best friend. In a fight for his life. Yes folks... A literal "clash of the titans". This story though action packed, manages to bring a multidimensional storyline together seamlessly. Building on the backstories of both Jonas and his lady love. And using said stories to introduce and explain their gifts and enhancements. Said enhancements being a great deal more specific to the functioning of both the couple and the story to those of previous installments within the series. All the while building to the crescendo moments of action and passion that have become a hallmark of the series. It must also be said that this book derives a great deal of its emotional appeal from the past and present bonds of familial relationships. As such, characters from previous books are reintroduced. And the continuity of series integrity flawlessly maintained.
Reviewer's Notes This book may be read as part of its intended series. Or as a standalone. All opinions expressed here are honest and have in no way been influenced by Berkley or any associated parties. Thanks to Berkley and Netgalley for the review copy on which this critique is based.
Phantom Game is the latest Ghostwalker book, and this is the story of Jonas Harper a/k/a/Smoke and Camellia Mist. This book was so awesome because it takes us back to Team One but also the reader finally learns what happened to one of the girls who escaped Peter Whitney’ breeding program when Team Two helped Marigold (now married to Ken Norton) free the other girls being held at Whitney’s compound. I have wondered for years about Camille (Cami), the girls were supposed to go in different directions then later regroup to split the monies they had made on various missions, but Cami completely vanished. Until now.
Using his predatory senses, Jonas feels danger nearby the compound and goes up into the mountain with two other team members, Kyle and Jeff, to investigate. Right away Jonas discovers a mysterious woman living in the mountains right above Teams One and Two compound. All these years Camille has been living on her own and created a safe home in the forest using her many talents; she is able to bind nature to her, can communicating with animals and plants as well as a deep connection with a mysterious Middlemist Red plant.
Jonas knows immediately that Camille is his other half, but he senses he has to go slow. Camille had been hurt and betrayed in the past and doesn’t trust her attraction to Jonas and her first instinct tit run. This book was so good because theirs is a slow burn romance that exquisitely allows for trust building throughout while they work as a team to root out a new danger within their mist.
Outstanding installment, I would give Phantom Game ten shining stars!
The GhostWalkers were men who had volunteered to be enhanced psychically so they would be more use to their country. But Dr. Peter Whitney also performed experimental gene coding on them without their consent or knowledge. But because of his connections and the government who wanted his enhanced soldiers, he was untouchable and continues to experiment on people. Whitney had also experimented on girls and used in vitro to make designer babies he could experiment on. he ended up making enhanced females that were the other half of a pair to some of the enhanced men he had experimented on. The enhanced pheromones in the pair made them attracted to each other.
Jonas and two of the other members of his GhostWalker team had headed into the forest because one of them had a gut feeling something was off in that direction. But Jonas came across more than he could have imagined. An enhanced female who had escaped Whitney's experiments had run and camouflaged herself in the dense mountains. Only another GhostWalker or enhanced person who had very specific gifts would have been able to find her and Jonas ended up being one of those people.
Camellia had been hiding for a while and she knew that GhostWalkers and some of their wives had made their home in a building not far from her. But they had no idea she was there and she had no plans to make herself known to them. So when Jonas was able to find her house and came to talk to her, she wasn't wanting to have anything to do with him but she knew he wasn't going to leave until she did.
At first Camellia had thought that Whitney had sent the GhostWalker team to find her and bring her back to the labs and she didn't trust anything Jonas said. But then they both realized they were a bonded pair and that attraction made her want to talk with him. They could both hear lies so while neither of them trusted the other at first, after talking a little and hearing no lies, they sat down and talked a bit more. Jonas had thought the feeling that he and his team were feeling might have been Camellia but she felt the dangerous threat as well so they knew it wasn't her.
When she, Jonas and his team realize there are other men on the mountain, they go scout to see who they are. They quickly realize that these men are the reason they all have been having bad feelings about a dangerous threat. She helps Jonas and his team find out who they are and why they are there and it's bad news, really bad news. More teams of soldiers are on the way to attack the building where Jonas and his team and families are living. When they find out why the teams of soldiers are sent they think they have it all figured out but secrets are revealed, feelings are hurt and the team realizes they've been betrayed by someone close to them. But then there's a pretty good twist and more questions are raised. All the while Camellia is getting to know Jonas better and they are falling for each other. She is much more than she seems and is able to help out Jonas and his team during the attacks that happen. The action in this book was great.
I've really been loving liking this series but this was definitely one of the best books in the series so far.
Disclosure: I was given an e-ARC of this book via NetGalley but all thoughts and opinions are my own.
AUDIBLE NARRATION WAS EXCELLENT!! I Love all the GhostWalkers stories, but Phantom Game will go on my list of one of the best stories in the entire GhostWalkers series.
Jonas "Smoke" Harper feels danger coming to toward teams one and two. He goes up into the mountains to search out the danger. He fines tropical flowers and plants growing wear they should not be growing. This is where he meets Camellia Mist one of the girls who escaped Dr. Whitney's Labatories. I remember Camellia from being mentioned in Ken Norton and Mari story "Deadly Game". Mari was supposed to meet up with her after all the females GhostWalkers escaped Whitney's Lab.
Camellia is a brave warrior, and she has many gifts. Her and Jonas make the perfect couple.
I loved revisiting teams one and two. I just wished we could have seen more of baby Daniel's GhostWalker enhancements. I also, miss Nonny!!
The story and characters are well written. I love the storyline and plot!
What’s going on Feehan?!? Do we really need an entire 8 chapters to go over plant biology, trust issues, and recapping the previous books? I’m pretty sure I fell asleep over a dozen times and they were in the middle of a threat the whole time. You took away from the action constantly going back to draw attention to all the involved players weaknesses. Then you’d spend another entire chapter going over how the plants talk AGAIN. Like ok we got it by the third time. Idk… sorry… was seriously my favorite series of all time has turned to complete garbage. The character had zero connection to me and all the plant science crap was so boring and you completely drowned out the story plot with it.
For those who liked it…. Did she end it with a bang? I honestly can’t finish the book. It’s that boring to me! First one since Samurai Game to really hate. Reading others reviews, there’s supposed to be updates and such on teams one and two but that must happen at the end cause all I got was recaps. I don’t get how this got high reviews 🤨.
Maybe it’s time to stop writing about the adults, jump ahead a couple decades and start on the kids. And for the love of god stop making the women so insecure! You can have a good romance with danger and drama without all the “I’m nothing” crap. Idk kill off some of the adults and make the kids super vengeful… yeah! I can’t be the only one ready for the time line to move on right? Feels like she’s beating a dead fish at this point. It’s dead… next!
Bedazzled! Book 18 was so much, it was new, it was familiar, there was snark there was sorrow. This intrigued and gutted me. I sniffed up tears and laughed out loud. After I finished this book I had to google Middlemist. Sadly even if it wasn't rare, there is no way for me to grow some where I live *sniffle* This book also befuddled me in an intriguing way as information on Camelia's ability was slowly shared. There is a lot going on in this book, pretty much full steam ahead - igniting all the neurons of suspense, family, war, love and betrayal. (no - not cheating) I highly recommend this book with our tortured enhanced super soldiers who and the women they were paired with, who were tortured and experimented. Thank you for the arc, I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions. Photo courtesy of Maureen Gianinio - if I get it attached :ha
GhostWalker Jonas Harper knows that as an enhanced super soldier creation by the whack job scientist, Dr. Whitney, he may very well have a perfect mate fashioned for him under the same program. Jonas has seen several of the other members of his team with connected ones find their mates and even have children. He sees himself as too much of a monster to ever really have the same chance. Jonas’s special enhanced instincts tell him not only that a threat is coming to their compounds, but high up in the mountains is a woman who calls to him specifically. Camellia is his other half in every way including psychically which is most important for them to have any kind of relationship.
Camellia grew up under the evil doctor Whitney’s prison-like care being experimented on, literally tortured along with several other young girls and women like her. Once she escaped, Camellia has lived alone surviving on her unique skills connected to plants and animals in an intrinsic way. She has some very deadly skills which will work well for combating their common enemy who is threatening Jonas and his two companions’ Ghostwalker unit as well as their families in the compound down the mountain where Camellia lives.
Camellia and Jonas are very drawn to each other even beyond the engineered part of their shared biology. Because of her past experiences and betrayals, Camellia trusts no one so she plans to high tail it as soon as the battle is won. Jonas as an elite hunter with animal DNA, never lets his prey go; he has Camellia in his sights. She brings him a peace and a joy that Jonas thought he never could have because of all of his struggles to stay sane with raging instincts fueling aggression as well as the urge go ballistic in stressful situations. With the adversaries at their doorstep, Camellia and Jonas have little time to truly get to know each other before they are under pressures from both his team in the compound and their opponents.
What is interesting about this story is Camellia’s connection to the flora and fauna including the underground mycelium which is a vast network of very abundant life including wide spread fungi. She can change the environment around her in a nearly magical way as well as communicating with the animals who protect her. Jonas believes he is beyond redemption weighed down by guilt and grief for all his has done so after they come together, he sees Camellia as his own personal miracle. At book #18 in the long running GhostWalker tales, most readers will know what to expect from the action and relationship of these paired main characters as well as Ms. Feehan’s style and pacing which can get verbally lengthy at times, but these stories continue to be an enjoyable series.
This book felt like more of the first few books, focusing on the teams, their abilities, what they can do with some hot sex thrown in. Instead of the last few books where it was a lot of sex, with just a bit about the guys, their abilities and what they can do. With everyone being so modified, I find I enjoy reading more about that, seeing how the animal and plant dna changed them and how they deal with it. Being that they are in a group, it seems to help them as they dealt with some really freaky stuff.
I really liked Camellia and her special abilities. It really isn't things we've seen before. I like how she dealt with Jonas and the guys invading her space, how she listened to them while being leery, but ultimately trusted them. She really brought about some great skills to the team and made them stop and think about what was going on, due to having an outsider's view.
The battle with the "bad guys" was a bit crazy, mostly because they had been manipulated so much and it was just luck that our guys weren't more like them.
I was glad to see how things ended, glad to see forgiveness given and glad to see a start of a new couple.
4.25 stars--PHANTOM GAME is the eighteenth instalment in Christine Feehan’s contemporary, adult GHOSTWALKERS paranormal, (often erotic) romance series focusing on an elite group (4 teams) of enhanced men and women known as the GhostWalkers (GW). These ‘super soldiers’ were once part of an unauthorized government experiment performed by Dr. Peter Whitney but several soldiers have since, opted into the program on their own. The original GhostWalkers struggled without a female anchor, a female whose genetic and enhanced powers were often in tandem with the men involved. This is Team One member Jonas ‘Smoke’ Harper, and Camellia Mist’s story line. PHANTOM GAME can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty but I recommend reading the series in order for back story and cohesion, or at the very least book one SHADOW GAME where Team One was first introduced.
Told from dual third person perspectives (Camillia and Jonas) PHANTOM GAME, returns to Team One, Dr. Peter Whitney’s original team of GhostWalkers, a tight-knit group of enhanced soldiers considered a failure by GhostWalker standards. Jonas Harper, along with team members Dr. Kyle Forbes and Jeff Hollister have been sent on a mission by Team Captain Ryland Miller, searching for something or someone threatening the lives of the families secured in the compound for Team One but the further into the forest, the sicker Jeff and Kyle become, and Jonas is forced to go it alone. Pulled by an unknown source, Jonas will come face to face with Camellia Mist, one of the original orphaned girls experimented on by Peter Whitney, a woman who is a genetic match to our story line hero but a woman who was betrayed by someone she considered family and friend. Struggling to accept and trust Jonas Harper, Camellia is reluctant to follow but threats from a different ‘predator’ find Camellia helping the Team, and the man with whom she will fall in love. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Camellia and Jonas, and the potential fall-out as a need for vengeance finds both Teams One and Two, targeted by a group of enhanced soldiers who are risking their lives for a perceived betrayal of one of their own.
Camellia is a powerful GhostWalker whose abilities continue to evolve on a daily basis but Camellia is also of the mindset that death follows her at every corner, and the betrayal by a ‘sister’ pushed Camellia out of their lives. Jonas Harper has yet to discover the source of all of his ‘genetic make-up’ but meeting Camellia reveals a closer connection to the earth and wildlife than he could have ever imagined. As the Team comes under fire, Camellia and Jonas will work together using the power of their mind and nature to save the lives of people at home.
The relationship between Jonas and Camellia is predicated and fated by manipulated genetics, and altered DNA. As members of the original unsanctioned GhostWalker experiments Camellia had been ‘matched’ with our story line hero, a match that could not be denied regardless of forethought or desire. Jonas and Camellia’s abilities would help one another when their lives, and the lives of Team One and Team Two are threatened, and it is these abilities that I am going to address below. Like the previous few instalments PHANTOM GAME does not focus on the sexual aspect of the couple’s connection-the relationship between Jonas and Camellia is more of a love match than a need to overpower and control. Jonas knows Camellia is his destiny but refuses to demand submission of the woman with whom he will fall in love. The $ex scenes are limited but passionate.
For readers and followers of Christine Feehan there is a recent and ongoing familiarity and corresponding comparison between the GHOSTWALKERS and DARK/CARPATHIAN series. The Ghostwalkers are now exhibiting some of the same powers, characteristics and abilities of the author’s Carpathian characters including psychic healing, mind to mind emotional connections and interactions; control of animals and the ability to see through their eyes-Camillia considers the animals under her command a part of her family, as well as controlling the weather, nature and animals; and the application of human characteristic (anthropomorphic) to animals and plants. Camellia’s powers are akin to the Dark series character Syndil and her family line. The GhostWalkers series is treading into familiar territory with many similarities to the Carpathian Series.
There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including many familiar faces introduced in the earlier instalments: Ryland and Lily Miller; Dr. Kyle Forbes, and Jeff Hollister-as a reminder, Jeff is the Ghostwalker who suffered a stroke in the introductory story line; Kaden and Tansy Montague; Team Two’s Ken and Mari Norton; Jack and Briony Norton, and Logan Maxwell; Raul ‘Gator’ Fontenont as well as the mention of several other Ghostwalkers and couples. The requisite evil has many faces.
PHANTOM GAME is a story of betrayal and vengeance, secrets and lies, family and friendships, fate and love. PHANTOM GAME covers but a few days in the life of the Ghostwalkers and our story line couple, and as far as the entire series, only advances a couple of years from the introductory story line. The action packed premise is twisted and tragic; the romance is intimate; the characters are edgy, inspiring and intense.
The Ghost Walker Series, a Military Science Fiction Romance series that has evolved through each book...making you love the Protagonists and despise the Antagonists, each book focused on one couple and fellow Ghostwalkers, and the families they are making. Each face their own conflicts and enemies...but the underlying Antagonist of the series is the most Diabolical villain I've ever read! Although these books are wonderful read as a series, Christine Feehan does an amazing job weaving the information needed into the story so they can be read as a standalone. . Phantom Game, Book 18, is the story of Jonas "Smoke" Harper and Camellia. After meeting members of all 4 Teams of Whitney’s Military psychically and physically enhanced Ghostwalkers and seeing many reach their Happily Ever After, We're returning to Team One and the Original 12 female orphans. Back to the revelations of Dr Peter Whitney’s Diabolical DNA enhancements in his ends justify the means narcissistic sociopathic mind! Of course, Whitney's female experiments are the ideal partners for these Ghostwalkers and he made sure they were selectively even more so, pairing them. He wants to guarantee genetic matches reproduce. Luckily for the stories, love needs more than pheromones, and people are more than their DNA enhancements. . Both Camellia and Jonas are dealing with betrayal and loss. The betrayal Camellia encountered made her retreat, hide from people and lost her trust in anyone but herself, fearful they would hurt her again. Jonas’ betrayal broke his trust in himself difficult accepting his skills and strength of character, feared he would hurt those he cared about, lose the control he so desperately used to function. . A Beautiful love store revolves around this, acceptance of each other. They come to see each other as the entire amazing person they are. Both grow as individuals and as a couple. Cami learns that betrayal is only as horrid as the motivation behind it. She needed to remember Whitney set them up for dammed if you do dammed if you don’t scenarios to break trust. She is the beauty whose gifts heal and sooth the savage beast. He is the one who can protect her, give her a home and family. As their relationship grows, she learns trust outside the world she built can happen. Jonas learns the strength in who he is, with her guidance he can learn to trust himself, he is not the monster he thinks Whitney turned him into. He can control his enhancements and use them all to his advantage. As all is discovered they realize they are a perfect team and can rely on and trust each other above anyone else. The romance is strong and paced well! . As Jonas and Camellia build a wonderful love story working through betrayals of the past, whispered betrayal in the present, we are kept on the edge of our seat. The danger approaching the compound Home of Team One and Two needs the GhostWalker's to trust each other most! So many twists and turns as to where the threat is coming from and action so well written at times I forgot to breathe! Can’t wait for the next ghostwalker story!
Jonas and his good friends, Jeff and Kyle, are investigating the woods around The GhostWalker compounds for Teams 1 and 2 because Jonas has a sense that something is watching and possibly targeting them. When a disorienting fog envelops them, Jonas realizes something else is at work and leaves Kyle and Jeff behind in order to determine the level of danger. What he stumbles on is a small house made of rare and exotic plants and flowers that shouldn't be growing in the mountains of Montana. Jonas sees Camellia for the first time, and he knows that she is reticent of strangers, but he also knows that he has finally found his genetic mate. However, a team of enhanced soldiers is on their way to destroy the residents of both GhostWalker compounds, so Jonas and Camellia must pool their talents in order to stop them.
Phantom Game is definitely a strong entry in the GhostWalker series, but it does have some flaws that can't be overlooked. The pacing of the story is off. Much of the first half of the book is spent info-dumping with lots of conversation, telling what is happening and the last half is filled with way too many incidents, and there is so much repetition, making the book much longer than necessary. However, this book does put the focus on the GhostWalker teams, which is an improvement over recent submissions in this series. Also, the relationship between Jonas and Camellia is angsty without being overly-dramatic or bogged down with too many love scenes. Overall, Phantom Game is one of the best GhostWalker stories in recent memory and well worth the read.
This is a beautiful story of love and loyalty and betrayal. Jonas is so full of self-hatred and guilt. He is all about control and protecting those he loves as friends and family and he feels a major threat coming towards them and knows he has to find it. What he finds is a complete shock and a gift.
Camellia has made herself an oasis in the forest. She is at once all about finding peace but she can also hold a grudge. She knows what Whitney is capable of and has he oasis protected until Jonas. She trusts no one and certainly not the ghostwalker teams far below. When her alarms are tripped she thinks she's been found and knows her time is up.
Read the journey of Jonas and Camellia. It is beautiful.
I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is probably my favourite series that Feehan writes. Enjoyed this one, really love that we got to go back to Team One and see how they were all doing. And I liked getting a little bit of Team Two. I’m looking forward to the next book, I hope it’s about Ivy and we find out what really happened.
It was really awesome to come back to some of the original Ghostwalker team characters in this newest novel in the Ghostwalker series! The team with the most problems as Whitney hadn't yet perfected his process even after having experimented on female children for over twenty years, Jones is a member of Team One. He and his team mates experienced the worst of the problems and made it possible for Whitney to continue his experiments on three more teams.
If you read the Ghostwalker series, it has been a while since we've had a story from a Team One character so following Jones and his discovery of Camelia, which we were introduced to briefly in Mari and Ken's story in Deadly Game was really great. Camelia talents were different and fun to experience and the plant knowledge thrown in, whether it's true or not, made for interesting plant theory.
I thoroughly enjoyed their coming together, getting an insight into the compound that Team One had built since the last time we interacted with them, and above all, getting the sneak peak into the characters from back in book one, two, and three: Shadow, Mind, & Night Game.
Jonas "Smoke" Harper, genetically, and psychically enhanced member of Team 1, living in Montana feels danger, and a compulsion to track the threat to his team. As he begins his hunt in the Lolo National Forest, Jonas feels a pull toward something or someone else. He finds Camellia "Cami" Mist. One of the girls Whitney experimented on, and enhanced living in the mountains. They both realize that Whitney has paired them, and they both feel the threat moving toward Team 1, and 2.
What follows is Jonas, and Cami finding out how their gifts really complements the other, and Jonas shock when he finds out that he, and Cami are connected to plant life, especially the Middle Mist Red Camellia, and head out to find out who's the threat. They find out that The Consortium has decided that Team 1 and 2 are too dangerous, and unstable to live and has sent a small army to kill every man, woman, and child except for Lilly, and her son Daniel. Is Whitney behind this attack and in his arrogance wants to get rid of his flawed experiments?
We witness some great fight scenes in this story, as well as redemption, and forgiveness given to right the wrongs of the past. We catch up with some of the members of both teams, and find out exactly what type of experiments Whitney did to Team 1 that increases the testosterone level, aggression, and need for violence.
I loved Cami, and Smoke's relationship. She eases the need in Jonas for violence, and helps him to understand his gifts that he wasn't aware of. Cami's such a strong, balanced, understanding, and forgiving woman. What can I say about Smoke? He's amazing! Such a great attitude, considering his personal opinion of himself. We're always harder on ourselves. I'm happy that Cami showed Smoke the way.
My fingers are crossed that Ian McGillicuddy's story will be told next. He has an unusual psychic ability I'd like to know more about.
My first ever CF book was Ryland and Lily’s story-The Ghost Walkers are an amazing series to read. It’s been great to be back with Team One, bonus to hear about Team Two (Jack and Ken Norton) such memorable characters. I feel like I’m catching up with family. Jonas, family is important but he’s always kept distance between him and the team at times. He had special talents that set him apart from the others. Now it all makes sense. Camellia, not only a woman of superb intellect and talent but one who can enhance hidden talents in Jonas too. The are a match made in heaven, not by Whitney, that’s my theory anyway. They are fantastic GW in their own right but together they are magnificent! Story takes you on another adventure, not to be missed. On a side note, walking a lot more due to Covid…. Spotted a lovely bush in someone’s garden, flowers like a rose but not a rose. Admired it often, lots of blooms. Turns out on investigating Camellia that’s exactly what it is. So going to by my very own Camellia for the garden - happy reading!
I really like this series but I was disappointed in this book. I was 25% into this book and I was seriously contemplating not reading the rest of this book. Since I knew the series was so good I decided to stick with it. It was annoying that it seem like for that first 25% all the main characters talked about was plants and their life stories. I thought it was pathetic that as soon as these two met they only wanted to tell each other their life stories before they even really got to know each other. Jonas got so wrapped up in Camellia that he totally forgot about his friends and the fact that he went up to the mountains to see what the danger was that he felt up there. It did finally get better but it was a little bit corny especially when they started talking about plants and fungus. I hope the next book in the series is better.
Let me first say that when it comes to blending DNA with animal and plants, Ms. Feehan is one of the more creative writers. I really enjoyed this one specifically because of our heroine, Camellia. Can we say Poison Ivy if she was a good guy? I always felt Poison Ivy in Batman was given a bad rap. In this book, I am happy to say that Camellia may have been questionable for some, but she is all in for healing the land and growing her amazing flora.

Well the book was ok. I am wondering if Christine Feehan needs to move on to other books now. She was very descriptive about every little blade of grass and what colour the flowers are for pages at a time. If I took out the amount that had actually people in this book it would have been 100 pages if you were lucky. I am really wondering if you are tired of writing these series. I used to so excited and couldn't wait for your books to come out. Now this is the third one in this series that as been so slow due to all the background you seem to think everyone needs to know about. !!
Captivating and tense, a fun read. It's been a while since we've been back to Team One, so it took me a little bit to remember Jonas. I liked seeing familiar faces, and Jonas and Camellia's powers were intriguing and new. Her gift felt similar to Libby Drake and Seychelle Dubois, except she seems to have a little more control over it, but only barely. The antagonists felt a little weaker in this story, but the action was strong and the found family theme prevalent. Overall, a great addition to the series.

I love this series and I’m so happy to return to team 1! There is something just great about all the things that they experience and overcome. I think that Jonas and Camellia compliment each other in a way that I haven’t seen in the past couple books. I love the way the skills are close to complimenting each other and helping each other. It’s a great story.
Whitney is crazy but I think we often forget there are worse bad guys out there than Whitney. I think that the departure from Whitney as a bad guy is a great change.
I loved this! It was such a unique twist on the Ghostwalkers; which given we're eighteen books in is certainly an achievement. A whole new system of abilities comes up in here, and it was amazing. Like the previous book it seems to have more about the world than the individuals and their copious sex scenes, and I'm enjoying the change. It isn't about shock factor or borderline taboo aspects, it's just some enhanced people trying to live their life of freedom in peace. They just need to kill a few bad guys to get there.
Easy escape literature- lots of small cameos from characters in the other books. I had a couple of moments where I had to re-read the description of Camellias gift to understand exactly how it ‘worked’.
03-07: I've been wanting to read something by Christine Feehan for years. Her Dark Carpathian series always came highly recommended in the paranormal romance genre, even by some of my favorite authors, I just never quite got to them.
When the opportunity to read 'Phantom Game' came up, I jumped at it. As another long-lived paranormal series, I figured the Ghostwalker novel would be a good chance to finally see what her writing was all about.
The premise is interesting enough. Genetically enhanced soldier, Jonas 'Smoke' Harper, has such a heavy mix of predatorial dna that he struggles to keep it under control.. even with his team. Though he's seen many of those similar to himself meet their perfect mates and start relatively happy lives, it's not something he thinks is in the cards for himself.
Along comes Camellia. Part of the same brutal program, she's one of the original females that were designed to pair with a specific soldier. She's got plenty of her own deadly skills, but the two are overwhelmingly drawn to one another. They know why and that only makes her resist harder, while he just wants to give her every reason to give in.
Structurally, the story is fine. The concepts are interesting and the characters have lots of potential. I think the writing style just wasn't for me. I feel like a large portion of the past/present is just being told through conversation and I didn't feel invested.
All that aside, there's plenty of tense scenes here and there, a creative ability system, and I definitely felt like I could have liked it with just a different approach. But.. obviously this author has a ton of fans and they can't all be wrong. So, I still intend to check out that other series. Maybe I'll feel differently about it.
It's still a solid read though. If you're looking for something quick and light with military romance themes and a couple that's a bit resistant to the pull of one another, this might be the book for you.
