A family is found dead in their home. The only survivor is the teenage daughter who managed to escape the burning house.
Who killed them? And why? Detective Kaitlyn Carr has to bring their killer to justice.
A year before her disappearance, Violet, Kaitlyn’s sister, comes to stay with her after a bad fight with their mom. She can’t stand living at home as much as Kaitlyn once did and wants to move in with her.
But Kaitlyn was just promoted to detective and her hours are erratic and long. She’s never home and she can’t take care of a teenager. Or maybe she can?
As she gets closer and closer to finding out who killed the Hendrel family, her own family reaches a breaking point.
What happens when her sister asks her to do the impossible? What happens when she can’t say no?
What happens when the dysfunction of her own family threatens to blow up her face and let the killer off for good?
Girl Hidden is a suspenseful thriller novella set in the same world as the Girl Missing series. It is perfect for fans of A. J. Rivers, Mary Stone, Willow Rose, James Patterson, Melinda Leigh, Kendra Elliot, Ella Gray, and Karin Slaughter. It has mystery, angst, a bit of romance and family drama.
Kate Gable loves a good mystery that is full of suspense. She grew up devouring psychological thrillers and crime novels as well as movies, tv shows and true crime.
Her favorite stories are the ones that are centered on families with lots of secrets and lies as well as many twists and turns. Her novels have elements of psychological suspense, thriller, mystery and romance.
Kate Gable lives in Southern California with her husband, son, a dog and a cat. She has spent more than twenty years in this area and finds inspiration from its cities, canyons, deserts, and small mountain towns.
A great introduction to the Kaitlyn Carr series. Kaitlyn investigates a family murder when the only survivor is a teenage girl. Kaitlyn's teenage sister Violet is also staying with her. A quick read and great story.
I enjoyed reading this book by Kate Gable and easily recommend it to anyone enjoying murder/crime audiobooks.
This book is told from the point of view of a tough female law enforcement officer who is good at her job, yet, she has side issues that she also must deal with. I liked the added touch of humor and the real family issue touch brought in. The story itself is rather short but it covered everything needed. (After reading a few books lately that went on forever, I felt like their goal was to write a book longer than the book, "Hawaii or Shogun", but there was no content!)
GIRL HIDDEN is the first instalment and introductory novella in Kate Gable’s contemporary, adult DETECTIVE KAITLYN CARR suspense thriller focusing of LAPD Detective, thirty-something Kaitlyn Carr.
Told from first person perspective (Kaitlyn Carr) GIRL HIDDEN follows Detective Kaitlyn Carr as she and her partner Thomas of the LAPD, are called in to investigate the murder of four members of a local family. Interviewing neighbors, friends, co-workers and the lone surviving member of the family, Kaitlyn and Thomas begin to see a pattern, a pattern that implodes when the truth is revealed.
Meanwhile, Kaitlyn’s twelve year old sister Violet has turned up at our heroine’s house having fought with their mother, a woman possibly struggling with long term depresssion. Violet wants to attend a private art school but her mother had refused to allow her pre-teen daughter to dictate her future.
GIRL HIDDEN is an intriguing and suspenseful story of murder, mystery, family, tragedy and revenge. Kate Gable pulls the reader into a fast paced story that introduces Detective Kaitlyn Carr, as she navigates the world of murder and crime.
There's something missing in this story - it's too simple, no mystery, and very unbelievable. Very unsatisfying to read. It deals with two unconnected teens expressing dissatisfaction with their parents and the parents' very reasonable expectations and demands. It almost shows the parents as being unreasonable and unfair. There is no satisfying closure to this story - just one mentally unhinged girl and another whose parent lies to her to get her to obey. This is a disturbing story, with other disconnected things going on also.
Frankly, I was disappointed. Why set out the premise for a baffling mystery, and then wrap it up in a handful of pages? Nothing in this novella inspired me to read the series, yet somehow this has garnered almost a thousand reviews. It must be me.
I received an ARC of Girl Hidden and I am voluntarily leaving a review. I think this is going to be a great series. So far I'm liking all of the characters. I liked the mystery and following the characters around too solve the mystery was a lot of fun however it went kind of fast and the characters went from asking questions one day to the mystery being solved the next day with some important details missing in between. The book was a novella and it's typical of a novella to go fast and miss some details. I do hope the rest of the books in the series will be a lot more detailed since they will be full length novels.
Girl Hidden is a short novella, introducing the world to Detective Kaitilyn Carr. I like her work ethic in solving cases and the different relationships she has to also deal with in the story.
This story starts with some tragic action, but the suspense right through to the end when we discover who is responsible was an interesting ride.
Kaitilyn not only has to deal with work, she has her internal self battles, relationships with her sister, mother and her work partner to deal with.
A family is dead in an exclusive Laurel Canyon neighborhood, their home set on fire. Los Angeles Police Department Detective Kaitlyn Carr, assigned to the case along with her colleague, Detective Thomas Abrams, begins the investigation with interviews of the neighbors even though this is supposed to be Kaitlyn’s day off. Who could have committed such a brutal, heinous crime? And does the culprit know there is a survivor?
The sole survivor of the Hendrel family massacre, fourteen-year-old Angie, doesn’t have much information to help the investigation; she's traumatized and, as she tries to explain what happened, she breaks down in tears. Kaitlyn would like to talk a bit longer, but Angie isn't up to it.
At the same time, Kaitlyn is dealing with her much younger sister, Violet, who had a falling-out with their mother and has come to stay with her for the week. The twelve-year-old girl wants to stay with Kaitlyn permanently and attend a pricy private art school in Santa Monica.
When the issue with Violet takes an unexpected turn, Kaitlyn finds herself caught between her sister and her mother; at the same time, her case is affected when a surprising development surfaces.
What will happen to Violet? And will Kaitlyn and Thomas find the murderer of the Hendrel family?
“Girl Hidden” is the prequel introduction to the author’s Detective Kaitlyn Carr series. Part mystery, part police procedural [albeit it brief due to the novella format], part family drama, there’s anguish and frustration along with a touch of romance in a story that takes a tragic turn. There’s sufficient backstory to provide context for the narrative while the juxtaposition between Kaitlyn’s case and her home situation gives the story both authenticity and depth.
Told from Kaitlyn’s point of view, this novella starts out running and never lets up. The twists and turns take the narrative in unexpected directions while keeping the suspense building. Believable, realistic characters, a captivating case, and a realistic investigation combine to pull the reader in from the beginning while they keep those pages turning.
I wasn't expecting this to be a novella. Not sure it was even that. I thought there was way too much about the family life and not enough about the crimes.
This novella is the first book from Author Kate Gable, and from I read, it is a start to a very good series. What a story! Twisty, suspenseful thriller that is fast-paced. I absolutely LOVED this book. The storyline pulls you straight in with the first few chapters. It was addictive and emotional... I was gripped instantly... I was obsessed, and I couldn’t stop myself from reading. When you think you have it all figured out, then BAM, another curveball is thrown at you. Detective Kaitlyn (Kate) Carr was called to the scene on her day off with her sister, Violet, who is visiting her. Then, her partner Det. Thomas Abrams, joins her to investigate the brutal slaying of an entire family at their home in Laurel Canyon, and the only survivor is a 14 year old daughter, Angie. Who could have done this horrendous crime? The detectives discover that this case is far from being straightforward—leading them to several suspects. I love mystery/thriller stories. I felt the characters were very human and real, and I was totally engaged. If you find a book that grabs you and doesn’t want to let go, then, this one will be right up your alley! Kate Gable creates a world, plot, and characters that linger long after the last sentence of the last page. I HIGHLY recommend this book. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
What a great novella to start this series of book, it may be short but there is a lot going on in it and keeps you reading from page one to the end.
Kaitlyn Carr is a Detective in the LAPD, she is always there to solve the murders.
A family of four are found dead in their home, the only survivor is the teenage daughter Angie, who escapes and runs to a friend two miles away to call the police.
nothing seems to add up, but Kaitlyn and Thomas work tirelessly to find out who killed them
at the same time, Kaitlyn has to deal with her sister Violet who has come to stay after a fight with their mum, wanting to move in permanently but Kaitlyn knows with the hours she works it is impossible.
see how they solve the murder and what happens with violet.
This is the book that starts a new series by Kate Gable and I have to say that I couldn't put it down and I can't wait to read the next book. Kaithlin is on a day of with her sister Violet when she gets a call that four bodies have been found in a house in Laurel Canyon and the only survivor is the fourteen year daughter. Kaithlin arrives at the scene as she is a detective for the LAPD and forensic evidence needs to be collected to find out what happened and who is responsible for this crime. There are twists and turns along the way but I definitely recommend you read this book and you will definitely not be disappointed.
This quick read crime mystery features LAPD Detectve Kaitlyn Carr, her teenage sister Violet, and Detective Thomas Abrams, her love interest and assigned partner. Kaitlyn and Thomas are assigned to a case where the Hendel family was murdered except for Angie, a fourteen year old teenager, who escapes and holds the clues they need to solve this mysterious murder. This well written novella introduces the primary characters for this new suspenseful series which end in a jaw dropping conclusion. The next book in this series is Girl Missing which I can hardly wait to read. I highly recommend this book.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Meh! This novella oozed promise but, for me, fell flat. Started out with a bang and then. ..just family drama and teenage angst and the murders fell by the wayside.
I'm assuming this is going to be a serial but I really don't care how it turns out.
2*'s round up.
I received a free copy of this book from the author and I am giving you my honest review.
This is just a short story introducing us to Kaitlyn Carr before the series proper begins. It is only 86 pages and so I can't give 5* for a book that's so short. I don't ever bother with novellas, only books over 200 pages that have some meat to them. I only bothered with this one as I have book 1 downloaded, then saw this one was a prequel so felt obliged. It was well written, though all tied up too easily and quickly for my liking. This could've been a proper full-length tale. I liked all her characters and it will be interesting to see how they all progress in the ensuing stories. One line made me laugh....they were knocking up neighbours to a crime scene and said that no one was home....then, "It's early afternoon on a Saturday, so they might be out." Well, I'd say that was bloody obvious !! She does need to sort her plural apostrophes out. She persistently wrote farmers market, not farmers' market, just not bothering with an apostrophe at all. She wrote the very same thing wrong I just highlighted in the last book I read as well with old-world as opposed to olde-worlde AND crow's feet not crows' feet. Both were things I highlighted in the previous book !! What are the odds ?? Play set warranted a hyphen and then she wrote faze not phase BUT got it right further down the very same paragraph !! This all said, though, it wasn't too frightfully edited and I'll give that next full story a go for sure.
Had I read this book prior to my one star review this book would have been such. Since I have, and since I was able to finish, I gave it two stars.
The dialogue between characters is barely okay, the characters themselves are very flat, and I don’t even want to get started on the relationship dynamics.
There are only so many times a man can wink before it becomes weird. If that’s all that you believe flirting is then more power to ya, but even I know there’s more to it. The cheesy paragraph of the main character writing a book about what I’m reading was weird and honestly just filler.
The sisters’ relationship is so weird. How did you as an LAPD officer not realize that if you were to sign your sister up to a high school and have her live with you that you would have to become her legal guardian? Honestly, I even kind of agree with the mother. She’s sayin that education is important and that the main character’s sister can wait to go to a college that focuses on the arts instead of moving to an art based high school. The ending of the interrogation of the 14 year old victim and suspect was crazy and not in a good way.
I know there’s more in the series and I honestly would rather just save myself the time and you should too.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
If the intention was to make the reader feel excited to pick up the series, this won't do it 🤷🏽♀️.
There's one thing that I can say about Detective Kaitlyn Carr and that is that if I were involved in a situation where she was the lead detective... I would be doomed. I'm pretty sure she is in the wrong career path because she has like zero critical thinking and after dealing with every witness she would be like "they seem legit, let's move interview the next one".
Even with the most obvious clues Kaitlyn and her partner Thomas couldn't figure out things. The crime? Boring. Was there any suspense? Nothing. At least a plot twist? The author doesn't know what that is.
The audiobook for this novella is free and it's horrible. The narrator is doing zero effort to try to make the story interesting, I guess she even realized how bad the story was and decided to just read it. I'm pretty sure if I decided to use Siri to read it would be better.
This little novella is a perfect introduction to the main character, and her background, of the Detective Kaitlyn Carr series. Kaitlyn is a detective for LAPD and this story occurs a year prior to when the actual series begins. We meet her sister, Violet; her mother, and her partner, Thomas Abrams. We learn about her family dynamics as well.
In this book, Kaitlyn, is called to handle a case where an entire family is found dead...except for one daughter. Not only are they found murdered, the house is then set on fire. This is a great short story filled with lots of drama, suspense, intrigue and mystery. It is a fast, hard to put down read.
Girl Hidden is the prequel novella to Kate Gable’s Kaitlyn Carr “Girl” series. At the beginning of a new year I like to read an entire series and this month I chose the five novels as well as the prequel novella for “Girl”. Although it is not necessary to read Girl Hidden before starting the five novels that follow it, I did find it helpful to read the prequel novella first as it provides some back story that added to my enjoyment of the rest of the series. Girl Hidden could be read on its’ own as Kate Gable does a great job of telling a complete story, and developing characters in less than 100 pages.
I stress this is my reaction, opinion only, and I wish the author and narrator success in their work. I apologize if my negative review hurts feelings. A review should be a candid expression of observations about the piece, not an outline of the story.
I was disappointed in this book including its narration. The staccato pace - she runs...she stumbles.... doesn't enhance the sense of urgency when overused. This is particularly true when read in a monotonous downspeak like a third grader reading his assigned essay aloud. These books have been on my Want To Read list for some time but I've heard enough to know they aren't for me.
This is a great, short read to introduce us to Detective Kaitlyn Carr. I really like her and how she's handling the relationships in her life. From dealing with her little sister, her mom and her kind of boyfriend while still being great at her job... it all works well together to build a strong character and a very interesting world. The thrill of the mystery she's working on kept me guessing and full of shocks! I'm looking forward to more from this series.
I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
This short novella started out strong and kept my interest throughout. The plot was well executed. Kaitlyn is a homicide detective and a likable character. She’s currently dating the detective that she’s working this murder case with. I haven’t decided if he’s “boyfriend material”, yet. I guess we’ll see! I’m looking forward to reading more about their relationship and more about her sister and her mom. This is going to be a very good suspense/thriller series. *This honest review is based on a complimentary copy from the author*
"Girl Hidden" is a short introduction to the Detective Kaitlyn Carr series - it doesn't really work. A family is murdered and the sole survivor, a teenage daughter, is traumatised and can offer few details. The forensics team identifies the murderer straight away and sets the scene for a dramatic ending. Meanwhile Kaitlyn has to deal with her much younger sister who has come to stay with her after falling out with their mother. Overall the book lacks tension and depth - if it had been much longer I probably would not have finished it. 2 Stars.
An LAPD homicide detective was called to the scene of a crime…with her teenage sister in tow. Story had a witty and snappy dialogue that I liked. The narrative was nice n’ easy, too. Unfortunately, I get half-way through the story and still nothing happens.
It’s all in the POV of the female detective, who talks about her sister, the way she was as a teenager, and the guy she’s hooking up with. Not much of a detective, is she? There’s virtually nothing on the case she’s working on.
I'm still trying to figure out why this was even written. Everything in this novella could have been dispersed throughout a few novels. The story was too quick and didn't seem to have a purpose. The characters fell flat for me and there really was no mystery or suspense. Also, sometimes it seemed as if it were being narrated by a child. I'm curious now to see if things get better in the full length novels. Had the author beefed up the murder and capture element of the story and made it a full length novel,it may have hit different.
This is a mystery novel where actions speak louder than words. The first into the world of Kaitlyn Carr a detective with the LAPD. She works long hours and is unattached to anyone. Her colleague Thomas is a friend with benefits who seems to want more in the relationship but Kaitlyn appears to feel differently. They are both assigned to a murder case where a whole family is murdered except for one daughter left alive. This book had me captivated from the very beginning, a thrilling and exciting reading for the suspense and thriller lovers like me!
Girl Hidden was a quick and fun read. Definitely had me wondering what the next page would hold. Kaitlyn Carr, an LAPD detective was called on a case where a whole family was left shot to death in their family home, leaving only one survivor. Detective Carr has little to nothing to work on as the offender cleared all traces of him by setting the family home on fire. Detective Carr works on both the crime scene and the only victim left alive to solve the case.
