When Mallory Barrows finds an old diary in a box of books, the story she finds within sends her on the hunt for the owner--and maybe more.
Theirs is a story ripped from a country song. A wedding, a former love presumed dead, her new love stepping aside. And over forty years later, their story is one few remember.
With Mallory determined to find the people in the pages of that diary, one couple is offered the second chance of a lifetime.
This “second-chance / seasoned romance” novel introduces the next island in the Independence Islands Series featuring five islands, six authors, and a boatload of happily-ever-afters.
The Independence Islands Series: beach reads aren’t just for summer anymore.

Oh, was this bio day? Oops! I forgot. I was lost in my latest manuscript. Umm... bio. Yeah.
Hi! I’m Chautona Havig. (for those who care, that’s Shuh-TONE-uh HAVE-ig). Yeah. Just work with me here. I should have used a pseudonym, but when you grow up with a name like Chautona, it kind of sticks.
Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near. ~ Hebrews 10: 23–25
Those aren’t just words on a page for me–they’re why I write. I write to encourage my brothers and sisters in Christ. The stories I create are to make people laugh, cry, question, consider.
They’re for you.
When the world screams for hope, I try to point you to the true Source of hope–Jesus.
Sometimes life in the church no longer seems a refuge from the pain of a self-serving world around us, but through my stories, I try to point you to the only Refuge that can truly help–the Father’s Everlasting Arms.
And sometimes we just need an escape from the monotony, the emptiness we see around us. We need joy, laughter–what I like to call “just the write escape.”
Christian fiction without apology or pretense–lived, not preached. What does that even mean? It means I care–about you. About your walk with Jesus. I care about the words you put before your eyes, the mental pictures those words conjure. It’s difficult to express just how much I love my brothers and sisters in Christ. It’s difficult to share just how much I love you.
But I do.
And I write for you. I sit in my little house in California’s Mojave Desert and I write to show you why one sister believes one thing, why a brother believes another. I write to show you how some Christians handle trials or triumphs–for you. So when you’re faced with something–good or bad, it doesn’t matter–maybe it’ll spark a memory. Maybe that memory will smolder until you pull out your Bible and see what the Lord said about it–about His great love for you. For YOU!
And maybe, just maybe, you’ll share that love with another hurting, confused, or blessed-with-more-than-she-knows-what-to-do-with soul.
I just happen to think that’s the most blessed giving anyone could hope to receive.
Do you believe in second chances even after forty years? At a certain age when God places these “chances” in the path of the journey, the time to act is now. Sure, fear and doubt might accompany the decision but the rewards of following God’s purpose are worth it. Chautona Havig presents a story for the ages as life offers one of those chance opportunities—not to redo or erase the past—but to add to the journey. Beware, the author leaves a mystery at the end. The reader must return to the Independence Islands to find the answers. Bravo Chautona!
Finding a Memory by Chautona Havig is book 19 in the Independence Island series. This is the first of the series that is based on Sparrow Island. This is an awesome series that is being written by six different authors and covers five different island. These are good stand alone stories, but they do reference people from the earlier stories.
Mallory is accidently given an old diary and starts reading it to find out who the owner is. The diary is that of a young girl, Patty, who finds a second chance at love after her boyfriend goes missing in Viet Nam. During the wedding rehearsal the old boyfriend comes back and she chooses him instead. I just loved the realness to this story, the struggles the family goes through with PTSD in a time when it was not known. I especially loved how Frank is able to move on with marrying and having a family. I loved how committed he was to his wife and how loving she must have been to know he loved Patty still.
This is a wonderful story that at times touches on sensitive topics like abuse, addiction and PTSD. I appreciated how well the author did with writing this story and making it feel real.
I received a complimentary copy of this book, this is my honest review.
Finding a Memory by Chautona Havig is the first book in the Sparrow Island Series, another series added to the Independence Islands series from Celebration Lit Publishers. An old diary ends up bringing two people together that never dreamed of even seeing each other again, let alone have a second chance at love.
Chautona Havig writes a beautiful story of love and second chances. Everything is not exactly perfect, but two special souls are brought together in a unique way and it ended up a sweet romance. Benjamin and Mallory are two characters that will stay with me a while. I love their development until the last page and their supporting characters were hanging in their as well. Everything about a beach read is wonderful, even though this can really be read anytime. If you haven’t read any of the beach reads, you are truly missing a real treat. If you enjoy a good old clean romance, you will love Mallory and Benjamin’s story. This one is Five Stars for me!
A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.
This first line from the book synopsis sums up this book perfectly. This is a story of love across the decades as well as second chances. And the story may have not written without a tiny bit of meddling from one of the characters.
Mallory Barrows cannot help but curious about an old diary. She only wants to take a peek to discover the owner. But soon she is drawn into the story of young love and lost love. She can't help but wonder if the people mentioned are still around. Her quest is the main part of the book. But her growing relationship with Benjamin also plays a role. I could say more details, but I do want to spoil anything for the reader who takes the time to read this wonderful book.
What I appreciated about this one is it grapples with one of the hard questions of life: Where is God when our life falls apart? And why do certain things happen? Why are there delays in our happiness? Although this book could probably be considered a beach read, it is not light in content. Topics include PTSD and cancer as well as bitterness and forgiveness. We may question, but God provides the answers in His time.
This is the third book in this series that I have listened to by this author/narrator combo. I love the fact that the voices have continued from book to book. The book is well written, but the narrator does a wonderful job bringing the book to life. I can't wait for the next book in this series.
I was provided with a copy of this audiobook through a book tour. I wanted to listen. All opinions are my own.
I think this is my favorite of the Islands Books that I have written, anyway. I suspect the next one will pass it up a bit, but I doubt it can by much. Can't wait to share in January!
This is a story of new beginnings, old pain, and second chances. Ripped from a country song is a story that Mallory finds herself involved in, all because of a diary she found in a box of books. Mallory and Benjamin give us a look at past loves, losses and that God never gives up on us, there is always hope.
I did struggle in some places where it seemed to have jumped and I missed the time jump. I do like bittersweet turned to sweet parts of this story. God does give us second chances. You can see how that plays out in these lives when you read this story.
My digital copy came from Celebrate Lit. Thank you! This review is mine, left freely. A positive review is never required.
One of the most difficult things about this past year was the decrease in my reading time. Its my time to recharge; to get lost in a story and think and ponder how the characters grew in the story, how the author creates a garden of their own within the pages and you see everything bloom at their time.
But when the list of what needs to get done just grows by the minute (pun intended), something gets set aside, and lately its been my reading time. Audio books creates the ultimate best of both worlds. I don’t have to give up the enjoyment of gardening for reading, nor visa versa.
Narrators generally fit into 2 categories for me, “meh” and “oooh! she/he is good!” Christa DelSorbo captured me when she began narrating for the Ever After Mystery books. Her way of pausing at just the right moments to let the reader catch something, without dragging it out, is superb. The best way I can describe it is like watching David Suchet portray Poirot. He quirks and eyebrow at a precise moment (and do we expect anything less?), he stares down for a moment before continuing, and well, if you know- you know. Christa DelSorbo has a similar ability for giving us just what we need in a story. Its been a delight and she ranks up there with some of my favorite narrators.
The book, Finding a Memory, is a perfect summer read because it is part of the Independence Island series. But what grabbed my heart and wound me inside the story tighter than a cucumber tendril, was how it was based on one of my favorite songs done by Patti Page- Go On With the Wedding. And for book worms, if you love Though None Go With Me, grab THIS book. Its not the same, and that is what makes it so enjoyable, but it feels inspired without a copy cat. And yet, there is a second part of this story that is deeper and richer as Mallory reads this diary about a young mother that struggles with being married to a Vietnam vet, and by the way, Straight Down a Crooked Lane is mentioned in this, and I LOVE this book so much and have to give a shout out to it! My heart grew to adore Benjamin. His love for Mallory but shyness at reaching out and insecurity with a secret that could shatter their relationship (ok, I may be playing that on a little thick— but it fits!) tugged my heart and had me rooting for him from page 1.
As a romance novel, I wasn’t sure if I would have enjoyed this as much as I did. I didn’t at first. I was actually more or less just not in the mood for a sappy read. But as the story progressed and Patti stepped into the picture, I knew that this was the right book for me. It had been a hard week for our family since we have someone that deals with clinical depression and sometimes there are books that just end up more depressing (even when they mean to be uplifting) during this time. I had none of those thoughts and in fact felt more like I had found a bosom friend in Patti.
Please, if you need a good read, one that has depth but still a light-hearted, fun, summer read. Grab this one.
Yay! I love the island books. It’s part of the series and involves some of the characters from past books but you can read it as a stand alone. I loved the character interactions and just the writers style.
I think the story was great and I just couldn’t get enough of the characters. I loved how clean the story was and how much I just wanted to read more and more. The entire book made me happy to read and I think it is one I will be sharing with my niece.
5/5
Thank you to the author/publisher for the review copy of this book via Celebrate Lit. I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.
I had already read this book so I was excited to get it on audio as well. I still enjoyed the characters and the author's writing style. Not to mention, it is the Islands Series that I adore. The narrator's voice is good for this one and I enjoyed hearing her inflections and the voices she gave the characters.
I think it's the fact that these aren't 'young kids' or even 20s-30s people falling in love in a second chance, but older than that. The story is clean and just good. It is one that I could literally share with anyone I know and not feel ashamed for a part I tell them they need to skip or just not share because of it. Please, get it and read/listen to it!

Chautona Havig has gotten me loving contemporary romance (not my fave genre), loving a song too old for me to like, and one I don’t even know! Oh, wait! I do remember looking it up and listening to it. The things a great author can do to you against your will!!
Finding a Memory by Chautona Havig first appealed to me because it was clear it featured older characters in a second-chance relationship. Part of the Independence Islands series, I enjoyed the book more because I was familiar with the other main couple who have been mentioned in past books.
Much of the book is presented as a mystery, as Mallory Barrows, owner of The Book Barrow, reads an old diary she finds. If you like The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks, you will enjoy this novel. As the diary progresses, Mallory gets very emotionally involved in the lives of the people described. I couldn’t help myself. I was just as emotionally involved, but also in the lives of Mallory and her slow-moving boyfriend, Benjamin.
Ms. Havig always finds a way and the perfect time to insert truth. One time when the diarist was at her lowest, she writes, “This is what I learned. * God knows everything. * I don’t know everything. * I can trust God. * I have to seek Him first. * People will fail me. * God never will. * My job is to love God and others. * I must teach my child about God. * Jesus is my rock. Not ...” Another favorite quote, so appropriate for what the character was going through: “The Lord had other plans that I don’t understand, but I do trust Him.”
One last (but these are not all) reason why I love this novel and all of Ms. Havig’s books- her sense of humor and ability to turn a phrase that never fails to make me smile. Which she does often! My fave example here? “That machine makes enough noise to make mummies in sarcophaguses plead for earplugs.”
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. I also bought my own copy. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.
Finding a Memory by Chautona Havig is the author's first book I have read. I chose to read this book because I found the story's background to be intriguing. I was not disappointed as the book was fantastic! I love second chance stories.
There are four characters of interest in Finding a Memory: Mallory, Benjamin, Patti, and Francis. Mallory, a young woman, finds a mistakenly donated diary and can't help but read through the book. The entries she reads compels her to find the diary's owner. Benjamin, a friend of Mallory's, is drawn into her quest to find the diary's author. Patti, a woman, living with regrets, continually questions her choices in life, including a past romance she left behind. Francis, a man who recently lost his wife, begins to ponder the possibility that his one true love who broke his heart is still out there. As the story unfolds, the characters engage and encourage each other while also living their own lives. The split narrative was well done, demonstrating the author's mastery of the writing craft.
I loved how the author simultaneously shared a story of a past romance while revealing a new young romance blossoming. I was drawn into both aspects and the overarching storyline—a fantastically written book.
If you like Christian Contemporary Romances, I highly recommend checking out Finding a Memory. I give it 5 out of 5 stars.
Note: I reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received through Celebrate Lit. I was not required to write a positive review, nor was I compensated for sharing my thoughts. I am disclosing this per FTC regulations.
What I think you should know: Finding a Memory by Chautona Havig is the nineteenth book in the Independence Island Series and the first book to feature Sparrow Island. While this book could be read as a standalone it features characters that have been in Havig’s previous Independence Island books and I feel it would be best enjoyed if you have read the previous Islands before starting this one. This book once again features Ben and Mallory and introduces us to new characters whose story is the main feature.
What you might need to know: Patty’s husband suffered from PTSD, he also had a drug addiction.
What I think about this book: This is a heartbreaking bittersweet story of a Love that lasts a lifetime. When Mallory finds a decades old diary she can’t imagine the kind of love that she will read about and about an even greater love that’s story goes mostly untold. As much my heart ached for Patti and Francis, I find myself even more drawn to Gina, a woman who loved a man enough to understand that he never truly let go of his first love and encouraged him to try to find her again when her time on earth was done. I loved getting to more of Benjamin and Mallory! Havig for a author who doesn't’ really like kissing scenes, hit it out of the park with one for me when Benjamin thought ”He’d never known kisses were like hugs for the lips, but when Benjamin’s lips met hers, it was as if all the hopes and dreams, the losses and fears were swept together in one comforting hug.” I can’t wait for the finale ( OR the Beginning) of Benjamin and Mallory’s story.
I received a complimentary copy of this book, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

Finding a Memory by author Chautona Havig is a split-time Christian romance. I enjoy reading “ split-time” stories, and with this book, author Chautona Havig has given us a compelling one. A talented wordsmith, this author has given readers another beautiful, heart-warming tale that is laced with an inspirational message. I loved it.
The two stories are set in 1973 and present day. They are seamlessly woven together to produce a page turning, captivating story of a second chance at love. It was refreshing to hear a story about a mature couple.
There are two romances in this book. Mallory, a bookstore owner, and her friend, Benjamin are the present day young couple. Mallory has found a diary from decades ago filled with romantic information. She makes it her quest to find them and return the diary. The second romance is with Patti and Francis. It is Patti’s diary that was mistakenly included in the used books to sell.
Carefully crafted, this brilliant book reads like a Hallmark movie. You’ll find drama, mystery, hope, and faith along with relatable characters. It grabbed my interest within the first few pages and I was invested in the story and characters.
I highly recommend Finding a Memory. It was a quick read for me because I could not put it down. If you are a fan of Contemporary Christian Fiction, this is a must read for you. It receives 5 out of 5 stars from me. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.
I enjoy reading “ split-time” stories, and with this book, author Chautona Havig has given us a compelling one.
When Mallory Barrows goes through a box of books that’s been donated to her bookstore, she finds a personal diary. It’s missing the page that has the owner’s name, but Mallory feels compelled to read it to find the author. Mallory becomes completely absorbed in reading about the writer’s life, never dreaming that the two main people featured in the diary are members of their small island community. As Benjamin helps Mallory make decisions about what to do with the diary, their own romance becomes even fuller and sweeter. For the two main characters in the diary, they will find that God has much more in store for them than they could ever imagine.
Without giving away any details, I’m confident that you will adore reading this “senior” love story that begins in 1973, but finds its new beginning many years later. There’s some wonderful characters in this book, and you’ll find yourself cheering for Mallory and Benjamin to find their happily-ever-after, too. It was amazing the way the author turned the two stories into one, and I loved watching their story unfold.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
Finding a Memory is the first book in the Sparrow Island section of the Independence Island series from Celebrate Lit. The books in the series, while written by a variety of authors, share characters and setting. In Finding a Memory, Chautona Havig uses two characters we have met in previous books - Mallory and Benjamin, they have had a role in several books in the series and it is nice to see their story continue. The story also includes two characters I don’t remember having much of a role in previous stories - Frank and Patti, a couple of older individuals - one with a background she has been hiding. Havig combines an old diary, lost love, and angry children to plot a story that can point readers to how God can lead through difficult circumstances. The mystery in Finding a Memory is well-laid out and has the readers guessing until things become clear. Even though Finding a Memory is part of a larger series, you do not need to read previous books in order to enjoy the story. Even though Finding a Memory is an adult novel, it could find a place in a k-12 Christian school library. I think high schoolers would enjoy it. I received a complimentary copy of Finding a Memory. This is my honest review.
Finding a Memory is written by the mega talented Chautona Havig. This is book 19 in the Independence Island series. The series is written by several amazing authors. While they are part of a series, each book can be a stand alone. However, I have enjoyed the series so much and if you like contempary romance, you will too.
This one is is up there on my favorite Independence Island series books. Mallory Barrows finds an old diary in a box of books. She starts to read and she realizes she needs to find the owner or family of the diary. Benjamin, Mallory's friend helps in the quest to find the owner of the diary. I love the second chance love story and the reminder of forgiveness in this story. Patti has now aged and lives with the pain and regret of her life choices. Her character broke my heart. Francis, has recently lost his wife and and now has been reliving the past . He has begun to wonder if his one true love got away.
This is a well written amazing book. This is one that will stick with me for a long time. The characters are well written, you can feel their emotions coming off the page. Kudos Chautona, this was an amazing book.
I received a copy of this book through the Celebrate Lit blogging program, all thoughts are my own.

I loved this book, but I do admit to having one reservation. It’s the story of a couple who was once in love, didn’t get married, married different people, and now years later, both are widowed and finally find each other again. It’s not a story of divorce and remarriage, but it still had the feeling of “my first spouse wasn’t as good as they should have been, so my marriage wasn’t as good as it should have been.” Admittedly, one of the characters had an abusive husband, and no, it could not be argued that he was the best choice, but it still felt sad that the other character loved his wonderful wife, but had always still had a part of his heart that belonged to his first love. Then again, he did go out of his way to say how great his marriage had been, so… I guess I have mixed feelings.
Still, it was a wonderful story! I’d love to get to know Frank and Patty in real life! And, of course, I LOVED reading more of Mallory and Benjamin! There’s a mystery revealed at the very end of the book, but I won’t tell what it is. 😉 You’ll be anxious for the next book in the series, though! I received an advance copy of this book and chose to review it. All opinions are my own.
This may be my favorite story in the Independence Islands series. This island community has a wonderful small-town appeal with characters that have become like family. Finding a Memory tugged at my heart with a roller coaster of emotions.
It's story of a second chance at love is unusual in that the main characters are older and have lived a full life. Both widowed, and through a strange twist of fate, have found a second chance with their first love. Ms. Havig handles the tough topics of PTSD and abuse with a graceful pen.
A secondary story, which really is told throughout the entire series is that of Mallory Barrows. While still grieving the 'expiration' of a dear family member, she just might be ready for a love of her own. Benjamin Hornigold's devotion to her is an excellent mirror of Francis' lifelong love for Patti. Looking forward to reading their happily ever after. Fingers-crossed.
I received a complimentary copy from the author/publisher through CelebrateLit. I was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Finding a Memory is by a favorite author of mine. It is also part of an amazing series. But more than that. It is simply amazing.
I’m a lover of history. And sentimental to the core. So this was a book that I couldn’t put down. We have been Ben and Mallory who we’ve followed this whole series finally moving forward a bit. And then, there’s the diary.
Who’s diary is it? How did it get donated to Mallory’s store and what should she do with it?
I loved how much Mallory felt and internalized what she read. And I loved how Ben supported her. You’ll have to read the book yourself to know who wrote the diary and how her story ends.
Hint hint the story doesn’t end with the diary. There’s more to be written.
I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.
I love journals and diaries, but I’m not sure I’d be able to see mine in someone else’s hands and tell them to keep reading it. It would definitely have to be a God moment, and I think that’s what happened in Finding a Memory. Mallory learns and grows from her time in the pages of someone else’s story. And let’s be honest, fiction or nonfiction, isn’t that one of our goals when we join another’s story? But because the story she enters is true, the joys and the pains are even more impactful. And through the sharing, a couple has the chance to make right some of the wrongs of the past and find healing and hope.
Finding a Memory is another great story in the Independence Islands series, and I know you’re going to enjoy it. I give this one four stars. I received an audiobook copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review and opinions are my own.
This sweet love story set on an island features a second chance relationship along with healing from the past. It includes suspense and surprises, making the book a fun read. Book shop owner Mallory Barrows finds a diary amid a box of donated books. In order to determine the owner, she feels she must read it, and the story won’t let her go. This story with a story adds depth and drama to the novel. The characters and story line are captivating, along with a plot that tugs at the heart. The voice artist did a great job bringing the tale to life. This is a story you may wish to enjoy more than once. I think book clubs would find it intriguing to discuss too. And the ending makes you long for more. It definitely held my interest all the way through to the unexpected revelation at the end. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.
This book is so sad, but so good and happy at the same time. I found so much of the story completely heartbreaking, and yet Mrs. Havig told it in her signature way that made it full of hope and joy and love and I came away very satisfied and encouraged that God really does work for the good of his people in all things.
Sidenote: yay for all things Benjamin and Mallory and how this book moves their story along!! Can't wait for more of them!!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author as part of her launch team.
As a retiree, I usually enjoy stories with senior characters and understand the heartbreak of the Vietnam War. I keep a diary and after her passing found my mother's WW2 diary. So I looked forward to Finding a Memory. Unfortunately, maybe due to gloomy winter weather or the pandemic, I had a difficult time following the story. Usually when authors write stories with characters from various time periods, chapters are labeled with characters names and / or setting and / or a date. The format for this story was lacking. I skimmed chapters and finally in frustration leaped to the end.
I enjoyed reading this book. I found it to be well written and a quick read. I was glad to get more of Mallory and Benjamin's story and can't wait to finally get the "rest of the story". I cried along with Mallory through some parts of the diary and cheered for the second chance romance. It is always nice to spend time on the Islands. I look forward to reading the rest of the books in this series.
I got a free copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own and given voluntarily. No compensation was received for my review.
This is one of my favorites of Chautona Havig's books. It tells a story that is heartbreaking, but also offers hope and healing. I love the way Chautona has woven together three stories into this book. We have a continuation of Mallory and Benjamin's story, as well as Patti's past, and what is happening right now with Patti. This story is masterfully told, and drew me in very quickly. I received a review copy of this book from CelebrateLit, and these are my honest thoughts about it.
This extraordinarily gifted author has again crafted a story that is enlightening, entertaining, thought-provoking and inspiring. A truly delightful gem with a vibrant faith message expertly woven throughout the complex storyline. This “second-chance / seasoned romance” novel carefully explores challenging life issues with finesse, care and consideration. Everything to love about this one – I very highly recommend and encourage you to share it far and wide!
*Transparency takes courage, but you never know what the result will be without that first step "
What a lovely book about second chances! I am a HEA lover, and this made my day.
Chautona Having is a favorite author of mine and I am gobsmacked that her range and abilities can churn out such diverse writing. Highly recommended 5/5
A sweet second chance romance told in Chautona's inimitable style. Delves into some of the struggles that a couple would face when reconnecting later in life.
You'll appreciate the secondary story line of Mallory and Benjamin better if you've read Chautona's other contributions to the Independence Island series, but this book could also stand alone.
Love love love this story. Full of faithfulness and second chance at love, this story has it all while tenderly handling very real issues and trauma. Redemptive with the right amount of drama to keep it interesting. A great read.
