Sui Ishida (石田スイ, Ishida Sui), born December 28, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, is a Japanese manga artist In 2010 he won the Young Jump 113th Grand Prix award with Tokyo Ghoul (東京喰種, Tōkyō Kushu). In March 2011, the same oneshot was published in the 2nd Issue of Miracle Jump. And later in September 2011, Tokyo Ghoul started as a series in Weekly Young Jump 2011-41 Issue. In December 2011, he made another oneshot about Rize that was published in December 2011 in Miracle Jump 6th Issue, which was later collected in the 6th volume of Tokyo Ghoul. In 2013, he also started Tokyo Ghoul: Jack in the digital magazine Jump LIVE.
Sui Ishida is his penname; nobody knows his real name or what he looks like.
Tokyo Ghoul was the manga that got me into reading manga, and is one of my favourites. So it's apparent that I'd read Sui Ishida's second series Choujin X / 超人 X. Like Tokyo Ghoul, it's getting released in Weekly Young Jump and in Japan there are currently five volumes published. You can read the chapters for free legally on the Manga Plus App by Shūeisha.
A plane crashes and is unharmed along with the 200 passengers. An accident that causes a stir even in a world populated by people with supernatural abilities. High school student Tokyo and his best friend Azuma volunteer to help clean up the crash site as aspiring heroes should. The two soon find out firsthand that normal mortals prefer not to get involved in the affairs of superhumans...
A decent start in the series. That seems promising though there are some similarities with Tokyo Ghoul and has aspects just like any other generic Shonen series. Nonetheless I hope Ishida's new series will be unique and successful.
Sui Ishida’s hauntingly beautiful art style always pulls me in; this cover is gorgeous, and the story is somewhat reminiscent of Tokyo Ghoul, one of my favourite mangas ever by the very same author.
I already love the dynamic between Tokio and his friend Azuma. The scene where they point the needles at each other?? So powerful. I really hope Tokio starts to appreciate himself more, and realize that their friendship isn’t as one-sided as he seems to believe.
The convergent storyline was an interesting choice. Before they came together, I definitely enjoyed Tokio’s perspective more than the girl’s (since once again, i can’t help feeling like it’s reminiscent of Kaneki)! I’m intrigued to see how Tokio will hone his powers, and learn to live with what’s happened to him in the future.
From the creator of Tokyo Ghoul comes a wacky, over the top, little horror spliced in, and a kind of fun Manga.
This kind of reminds me of more over the top FLCL type anime but much better than it. Contains a main hero who kind of doubts himself always, which is typical but in this case makes sense. Even his "Choujin" form, which is a monster like form, is a vulture because he's always following his friends lead. Now he must stand up to people after becoming a monster himself.
It's not nearly as serious as Tokyo Ghoul and that keeps it feeling different enough and fresh enough to enjoy it. Sometimes it's WAY too over the top but the characters got me interested to see where we'll go. Not great, but good. A 3.5 out of 5.
I've been anticipating this release, and was so excited to finally be able to read it! Only chapter 1 is out. Hopefully they are released weekly and not monthly. I enjoyed the first chapter. There's one image that looked like it was directly taken from Tokyo Ghoul, and I'm here for it! (This has nothing to do with Tokyo Ghoul. However, Tokyo Ghoul is my favorite manga, and I love the drawing/story style.)
Can't wait for chapter 2!
Edit: 06.29.2021 Just read chapter 2 and bumping this from 3 starts to 4 :)
The story feels a bit fragmented at the start. I guess we're following different people's versions of events until they all reach the same place in the story. It's fine so far and the art is nice.
I'm such a huge fan of Sui Ishida. Tokyo Ghoul is my comfort read and it's still one of my all-time favorite even years after being over. So, when I was told he was releasing a new story with monsters and action-packed scenes, I was game.
Tokyo Ghoul had Kaneki Ken, a character we could easily relate to. Especially the emotions he was going through while this big change in his life was happening. He was so easily lovable. And I root for him every single time. It's harder to root for a character you barely know so I'm excited to know more about Choujin X's Tokio. I love characters who are kinda weak and don't know how to control their powers at the beginning who become these amazing, hardcore powerful monsters. And I feel we're going to see that in this manga.
Still, it was a pretty okay start! That doesn't mean it was bad. It's the beginning so I get it. The art, as always, is super impressive and beautiful. This is going to be such a wild, weird story, for sure. And I'm going to enjoy every second of it.
Tokyo Ghoul is one of my favorite manga series. It’s one of the first ones that I’ve read that got me into manga. I’m a late starter but it’s better late than never.
I’ve been waiting for this to come out for a long time. I’ve been seeing it everywhere and I needed this one now. Then the arc gods blessed me and here we are.
This was an okay read. Some of the art reminded me of Beetlejuice and that made me more interested in the story but it really fell flat for me. I found myself trying to read other things to get out of reading this but I did push through. It just didn't live up to my expectations.
I know so many people are going to compare this to Ishida’s other work - Tokyo Ghoul - and I’m here to tell you right now: DON’T.
This is a very different series in terms of tone, character, and plot. And it's refreshing! Taken on its own, it is a great start to a new series with interesting powers introduces, intriguing lore, and FANTASTIC artwork. Can't wait to see how this series develops.
While the art style is fantastic, the plot was often confusing and the transitions were so fast it gave me whiplash. Def has potential, but if the storytelling doesn't even out, it might not be for me.
This volume consists of Chapters 1 to 6 (which consists of 262 pages). Volume 1 of Choujin X is a great start to Sui Ishida's thrilling and horror-esque manga sprinkled with action and adventure! Its characters are intriguing and there's a duo you'd love to see more of! Don't miss this chance of reading Sui Ishida's new work!
In Ishida's previous series, monsters were born, not made. The opposite is true here, and the story feels like it may owe less to Mary Shelley and more to Stan Lee as the protagonist struggles with how to use his great power. It's good, but not as driven as Tokyo Ghoul, which may actually work in its favor in terms of finding an audience.
Reviewed in March 4, 2022 at 12:32 P.M. and read in 2021 in May. Edited for grammar and update on the story.
I'm disappointed with volume 1 of Chojin X and the thing is I was actually expecting the story to be this bad but I still pushed on reading the story whenever Shonen Jump's app would update the chapters. I feel a lot of the reviews on this series are bias because they either are a fan of Ishida's Tokyo Ghoul or just wants to join on the hype just like they did with Yusei Matsui's The Elusive Samurai series when people used to pretend to like that series on Goodreads a lot more. Now I'm going to break down why this volume isn't a great start for a new series. Now the volume starts off with two characters named Azuma Higashi and Tokio Kurohara. Right off the bat we are told that Higashi has great fighting skills,a strong sense of justice and also always gets good grades in his class and that the main character Kurohara is the complete opposite of Azuma: he does not listen in class,is a bystander and coward when Azuma fights. Apparently despite the two being total opposites their "bond" is very "strong" when in reality Kurohara is overly dependent on Higashi. They had a fallen out very early in the story and eventually Higashi became fed up with Kurohara being unbearably annoying, dependent on him and needing advice or protection from bullies. Kurohara is a complete opposite from what was stated before about their friendship so far. They live in Yamato Prefecture where the district has almost been destroyed by Choujins (humans with supernatural abilities) and almost immediately the two are returning home from school when they encounter a Choujin who threatens to kill them. Kurohara and Higashi of course with no other way of escaping decided to become Choujins themselves reluctantly without knowing the side affects or what a Chojin really is. During all this Kurohara once again needs help he doesn't even TRY to be independent or to think for himself it is as if the writer has this character in a loop. The Chojin X concept is cool but the actual story is poorly written and weird. When I read volume 1 for the first time in 2021 my mind was mostly blank because I couldn't get emotionally invested in characters because they were generic and spinless. The villains who are in the story so far are very boring, drawn lazily and inconsistently and on top of that their goals aren't clear nor logical. The whole time I feel like I was reading one of those indie gag manga.
First off I don't think the main character Tokio Kurohara was engaging as some of the "reviews" are saying on here. This boy is a total coward, can't decisions for himself, weak, helpless, lacks confidence, loses his will power rather quickly whenever situation becomes too difficult for him to deal with and he's bland with a lack of a interesting personality or character design.
Second, the story is rushed with little to no reasoning for anything or direction. The illustrations looks completely different than Sui Ishida's Tokyo Ghoul art.. seriously what happened?
After weeks of the story going nowhere and the chapters updating irregularly on the app I stopped reading at chapter 16. The story is now on chapter 34.4 on Viz Media's Shonen Jump app. At the start of the series in 2021 the manga on the app didn't update for almost a month or so making me think it was cancelled. I kept coming every week to see a release hoping the story would get better and not end up like Yashahime(one of the worst anime sequels I've ever watched) and when it finally released the chapters were just going over the same situations again. I like Sui Ishida's Tokyo Ghoul series but I don't appreciate people hyping up Choijin X when it's not well written nor has "great art edgy flare" or "engaging lead and story" I only continued to read it to support Ishida and because I didn't want to drop the story when I already been reading it for months. I wish the story was more fleshed out instead of jumping the gun to Kurohara getting special powers reluctantly with no goal in mind and still depending on Azuma for help on decision making only to switch to for help Ely a much more capable character despite being a little kid. It's pathetic and embarrassing and I wish Ishida wouldn't emasculate his male leads and have them behave foolishly. Maiko Momoa is a okay character but she already feels like a generic female character so I don't care about her,Ely Otta is a slightly more interesting character but she's very odd, let's see what happens with her and Simon Kagomura looks like he would be a interesting guy hopefully Ishida doesn't screw up writing him. Tokio Kurohara has way less depth than Kaneki Ken from Tokyo Ghoul, but I'll give this manga another chance and still stick around for a bit to see if Ishida improves the story. I hope the story doesn't end up like his weird mini manga series P*nis man, that was a horrendous idea for a title and focused too much on "edge"
I will say that I think I’ll like this more than Tokyo Ghoul! I like the comedy in this one and it’s a more interesting story in my opinion. I didn’t get very far into Tokyo Ghoul before I was bored. The first volume of Choujin X was solid. I can’t wait to see where this goes. I will be picking up volume 2!
What a terribly disappointing read. It thrusts you right into this whambastic plot with no context or stakes. I had no idea what was happening and not in a "I'm interested in learning more" way. I didn't get time to learn about these character and grow to appreciate them before being forced into a life or death situation with them that, frankly, I had 0 investment in. I feel like it was rushed to get into the meat of the world and plot which is what I figured the story will build off of, but I feel like as a reader I have to care about it first before I would want to learn more about it and this book failed to make me interested in any of it.
What an interesting story. I loved the dynamic between Tokio and Azuma, and can see their friendship and the potential deterioration of it becoming the main driver of this story. I did wish that the author held off introducing Ely until later in the series to better explore Tokio and Azuma as characters. I liked the concept of the Choujin, but it is similar to other shounen series like Chainsaw Man and Kaijuu #8. It's mostly an already overused shounen trope. It was a great cliffhanger to end the volume on, and I am interested in how Tokio will develop from a sidekick into the main protagonist. There is enough here to explore and I'm looking forward to reading volume 2.
Beautiful artwork, as expected from Ishida. I liked the plot, the characters and the way we were introduced to this world. I can't wait for the other volumes to come out and see where this goes! Amazing work from an amazing mangaka.
New fave alert. This first volume was so dang good. There's everything I like in there. A great story, some amazing tension, and that good amount of horror plus battle to complete the narration.
Pity V2 was sold out at my local library. Gotta start the hunt now...
I remember reading this when it first started releasing online, but then I didn't stay caught up and left it behind. Now it's out in print so I'm catching up again. I think I'm definitely enjoying it more than I did back then. The concept is wacky and that sheep biker tractor chase scene is a delight!

first read, 2021:
3.5/5
this is weird as heck but in a good way i think??? idk, i feel like i could either end up liking it a lot or not enjoying it and a lot of that rides on the main character... we'll see if he is interesting as the story progresses.
atm it has very good design and a good hook, but i'm not too on board with the overall concept.
A new series from Ishida! Having just recently finished his landmark work, Tokyo Ghoul, I was very excited to be a part of his newest creation from the beginning. It's got all the edgy flare and incredible art. An engaging lead and story. Admittedly I'm writing this review several months after finishing both this volume and the second, since it was only recently confirmed how many chapters would be in each volume, so it's not super fresh in my mind. But I enjoyed it very much, and am excited for volume 3!
