A new life complete with tea, scones, and… murder?

And let’s not forget the ghost…

When your fiancé ditches you and your mother passes away, what do you do? If you’re April May, you buy a huge Victorian home on a whim and open a tearoom featuring lace tablecloths, exotic teas, and dainty sandwiches.

From the moment she moves in, nothing goes right, but her problems seem minor when a dead body turns up in her home. Accused of murder, April teams up with a cantankerous bar owner and a feisty, young antiques expert to solve the crime.

And what about the handsome, arrogant chef in her kitchen who no one else can see? She plans to get medical help for what must be a hallucination, but in the meantime, he’s putting a tasty French twist on her menu.

April May's car breaks down in a small California town. She sees an old house for sale, and on impulse, buys it, deciding she wants to open a tearoom. The locals seem quite hostile to her, and it gets worse when she's accused of murder. She does find a few friendly faces in town, and they agree to assist her in finding the real murderer. The ending and the murderer's identity didn't make much sense to me, but I liked the characters and the ghostly French chef who was teaching April to cook. Recipes are included.

This book was just okay. Had high hopes but kind of fell short. The characters were likable. Will try another book in this series. Hopefully the next story picks up the pace.

April May is opening a Tea Room. She is in a new town and shortly after arriving a body turns up in her walk-in fridge. This is a very good start to this series. While I can't imagine being quite as impulsive as April is, the mystery is well written and the characters varied and interesting. They will provide lots of opportunities in future books.

What a lovely book!

I loved it, from start to finish. I have a soft spot for ghosts, books with ghosts. It was a very sweet story, a very clever mystery. I took an immediate liking to April. She’s resilient! I loved the whole vibe of this book: pleasant and warm. Definitely recommend!

This book was a delightful cozy mystery that takes place in a small town. Included are quirky characters, an old haunted Victorian home changed into a tearoom, a dead body in the freezer and some laughable moments. I downloaded it from my Kindle Unlimited subscription. It's book 1 out of 9.

Blessed with the remarkable name April May and escaping from her former life in the city, April ends up stuck in a quaint seaside town and decides to buy a lovely victorian mansion to transform it into a teashop. She meets the locals and finds that people are prejudiced against outsiders, and there's no small amount of drama involved in the house's origins. But Ms May perseveres and is starting to think things might come together when she finds a dead body in her walk-in freezer, and the resident ghost chef is no help solving how the body got there.

For about the first 40% of the book, I was bored. I have nothing against small town drama, but without round characters to fill out such pastoral scenes, there's no substance. April May strikes me as a flat, opaque character, and while it's definitely a unique take to make her more middle aged and less of a young romantic, I kept waiting for a dark secret or startling character flaw to come to light, but nope. The action picks up when the dead body appears, but while April is (as usual) the main suspect, the book returns to the slow-paced meanderings of wondering if she's insane, learning to cook French cuisine, decorating the tea shop, and wondering if she has time for romance. Again, these are all lovely little cozy mystery tropes, but there was not enough of substance to keep me interested. I appreciate that this book offers some cozy tea brewing tips, and April is clearly an armchair expert on kinds of teas. I just got tired of waiting for something to happen.

I wasn't in love with this while reading it. April May (ridiculous name) is running away from something after her mother's death and decides on a whim to buy an old Victorian style home to open a tea room. She was snippy with everyone from the get go and a bit combative as well.

Being accused of murder and having to clear her own name she jumps to some conclusions which were a stretch and gets into trouble while trying to prep her new tea room for opening. I enjoy Chef Emile and that was about it.

I'll be reading the next book because I purchased it. The covers are adorable and are what drew me in honestly. I was hoping for more ghostly interactions than what we got.

Some great recipes

April May is started over her life . On impulse she buys a Victorian house in a small town. The house is haunted by a chef who is determined to teach her better skills. In the middle of establishing her new life, a dead body is found in her freezer. April was not a particularly likeable character. I found the writing style somewhat stilted and uncomfortable. I will need to read the second book to decide whether to continue the series.

This is a new to me author. I like cozy mysteries so I was happy to have the opportunity to listen to the audio book of this story. I had partially figured out whodunit but there was a twist I wasn't expecting. Looking back I can see the signs but I made assumptions that kept me from figuring it all out before the reveal. I thought the narrator did a pretty good job, though perhaps not perfect. I really liked her male voices.

I loved the ghost. Did April ever figure out that it wasn't her imagination? How would ones imagination be able to teach skills she didn't know? She should have known it was a ghost. He was pretty cute. I'd like to know more about him and why he is haunting that building so I would hope future books give more info.

I found that the story gave more info about tea than I ever cared to know. It almost felt like the author did a lot of research and wanted to include everything she learned but I didn't think it added to the story. There was a lot of tea drinking. April must have had to pee a lot. Ha ha.

I would like to read or listen to the rest of the series. There seems like there could be a romance brewing in the future but that didn't develop in this book. Will it happen in the rest of the series?

No sex or language
Mild violence, threatening situations
*I received an audio version of this book from the author and voluntarily chose to review it.

It was cute! It moved a little fast from one thing to the next, but it really is a good cozy book to read in a day or on a weekend. I really really didn’t like the random anecdotes about the temperatures of water that tea likes to be steeped in. It was really out of place and so unnecessary.

I wasn’t terribly fond of our main character. She was a bit rude and presumptuous and had a bit of a holier than though attitude at several points in the story. She did not develop as a character. In fact, none of them did, not really. It definitely feel formulated like pieces on a game board. I am hoping the characters develop a little more in the next books. I’m really interested in learning more about Irma and Mark. And I will die for Whisk, no questions asked.

In all, the story is kinda stupid but the vibes are mostly really nice. “Cozy mysteries” is the perfect way to describe it. Naming the main character “April May” and then calling the tea shop “sereniTEA” has me wanting to fight the author so I can’t go above 3 stars but truly did mostly enjoy my experience. The mysteries were a little obvious but that’s okay.

This was such a fun and entertaining, cozy mystery. It was a quick and easy read that I just flew through because I was so ingrained and invested in the story and the characters. It had some great elements like Whisk the cat, a French ghost, small town, great cast of characters and the opening of a new tea house.

I liked the whole vibe of the town. The characters were very interesting and really flush out this whole small town setting. I think they make a great addition to the story,

The mystery was really interesting, and had multiple layers to it not only was there a murder, but there was also the case of the missing jewels. I liked the fact that both were intertwined together.

And once the culprit was revealed, it was a twist. I hadn’t seen coming, especially that it related to another character that I am sure it’s gonna be the villain later on. I definitely was not expecting that twist at the end. That makes me all kinds of excited to read the rest in this series.

This was really a good new to me series and author. I loved the idea of a haunted tearoom, so when I saw it was Kindle Unlimited, I thought why not? The ghost wasn't the scary kind. He's just kind of snarky but surprisingly helpful as he proved in the showdown. I enjoyed April's character as a tearoom owner, and Irma proved to be a good new friend for her. Jennifer who worked at the antique store her dad ran was a super sweet girl who ended up working for April and finally getting away from an over-protective dad.

I sure hadn't guessed the perp at all. The showdown was a good one with the perp being hauled away. The end of the book had April with having finally gotten all the licenses needed and doing a soft opening just for her friends. Her friends stood by her when the mayor had come along promising to be a thorn in her side where the tearoom was concerned. I'm definitely borrowing the next book! I'm curious to see how everything works out once the tearoom is open for real.

A great start to a new series. When April's car tires blow out when she stopped at Serenity Cove, it appeared that Providence was telling her that this is where she starts anew. And when she falls in love at first sight with a Victorian house for sale, she decided this was certainly the case. But things did not work out the way she had planned - but things never do now, do they?

Exciting fun new mystery, in a small town with quirky characters and a house that is even more interesting. Thoroughly enjoyed this; loved the chef, the cat, the house and even more so, April. Gotta take my hat off to that girl - I'd have given up with the number of obstacles in her way but I really like that she hung on in there and saw it through to the end. I can foresee many more shenanigans in the future and I certainly want to be part of it!

I was looking for a short audiobook, and for the time I listened to it, I enjoyed it enough to stay until the end, which is much more enticing than the beginning.

I like how the main character is impulsive in her decisions. The way she decided it would be her home was a little stressful from the start; even during all the renovations, it seemed like a big house that would never be like before. I was a little lost on how she could have all that money because it looks like the timeline is concise, which is a lot of spending in such a small amount of time. However, when you understand the timeline, it's a lot more feasible.

As she is new in this town, she doesn't know everyone, and many people don't like her from the beginning as she is not from there. However, when she discovers some news about people, it's sometimes just an info dump as she is told the story, which makes the suspect list a little longer. Also, there are many details about tea and food, which sometimes comes from nowhere, making it sometimes a little repetitive. I'm also worried about how much time she needs to pee daily.

I knew who had done it from an early start. However, the twist was so impressive as it's so layered, and I feel it's not finished.

For the audio part, I wasn't really convinced by it as I couldn't distinguish the women's voices, and the French chef's voice I found it very stereotypical. Nevertheless, the men's voices were well done.

Even if I found this book a little too basic, I like it enough to continue the series; I will read the second volume, which will decide if I will continue.

This is a charming well-told story with quirky small-town characters that are perfect for any cozy mystery lover. April May discovers this small town when her car breaks down, so what does one decide to do when that happens? Well, they stay, of course. Hoping to achieve her dream of owning a tea room, April May purchases what she thinks will be the perfect place, an old Victorian home, which, as it turns out is haunted, not to mention the dead body in the freezer! Plenty of laugh-out-loud moments are present in this fun mystery that includes mouthwatering recipes at the end! I recommend this book and look forward to the next in this wonderful book. I received an ARC of this book but that in no way influenced my thoughts or review!

What a great start to the Haunted Tearoom series! After a disastrous breakup with her boyfriend, April May hits the road. When her car suddenly ends up with 2 flat tires, April finds herself stuck in the small town of Serenity Cove. While waiting for her car to be fixed, April discovers an old Victorian mansion which she buys on a whim to turn into the tearoom of her dreams. Before she can even get started good, a body is discovered in her freezer and she suddenly is the prime suspect. Along with trying to remodel the house and clear her name, she discovers a resident cat and the ghost of a famous chef. Be prepared for a lively time with a lot of quirky characters as April tries to get her tearoom open. The little tidbits of recipes and tea facts are just an added touch!

New Beginnings

April May drove into a small town after developing two flat tires and bought an old Victorian house. She’s decided this is the perfect location for the tea house she always wanted. Unfortunately, her dream comes with a few problems. The towns sheriff hates her on site. The towns people aren’t too crazy about strangers. The permit system is a nightmare. On the plus side, she’s making new friends and she’s found a handyman that does a good job. Unfortunately she’s got to deal with the cat she’s allergic to, a dead chef in her kitchen, and a dead body in her freezer. Instead of a simple life, April now has a nightmare. This is an entertaining read with a couple of exciting twists and recipes.

I loved Tea is for Trouble! It is a great cozy mystery with likable, interesting characters, friendship, and a mystery that kept me guessing until the end! April May's car ends up with two flat tires as ahe is driving through town. She decides to stay at the B&B and sees an old Victorious home for sale. She wants a change and she buys it to open up a tea restaurant. The locals are not happy. April has a few people over to try out some recipes but someone ends up dead. She adopts Whisk the cat and shares the kitchen with the ghost of Chef Emile. The story moves along at a good pace and the characters provide humor and depth. Very enjoyable! I can't wait for the next book! I received the audiobook from Karen Sue Walker for an honest review. #TeaIsForTrouble

I have to say this is actually a 4.5 star. I really did like this first book in the series, not sure if I will read the rest as there seems to be a bit variation on a theme. I would like to know more about April's Tea Room but I just don't know if I really want to deal with all the nasty attitudes (the Mayor is the worse) and the amount of bad vibes a small little town on the west coast can have.

I do absolutely adore her "Bengal Tiger" cat who lives in her attic and that ghost of a renowned French Chef she has to deal with (he is actually a really cool character that only April can see and speak with). Not to forget her "posse" of female friends she ultimately surrounds herself with.

If I read book two - I'll leave a review!

5 stars! I ABSOLUTELY loved this~ what a delightful start to the series!
April May is such a fun main character, and I instantly adored her dynamic with Jennifer and her gorgeous dresses, as well as the hilarious friendly ghost, and WHISK oh my gosh! Whisk the cat completely stole my heart. This series leans more on the paranormal light side, which perfectly complements the culinary side. The town of Serenity Cove is charming and full of personality, and I really enjoyed getting to know the locals lol they were a blast.
I loved all the tea talk and was pleasantly surprised with April's cozy cooking when she had to stop and think about the investigation... which I wasn’t expecting but totally adored. Can’t wait to read more in the series!

Nice set up for a cozy mystery series. Love the tea shop theme and the author includes some fun nerdy tea facts throughout. For a cozy mystery, this town is very unwelcoming, but I'm thinking April will win them over eventually. She already has some allies in a motley crew of unlikely souls, from an elderly lady with lots of attitude to a young twenty-something ingenue with an eye for vintage fashion. The police officer is a doofus in classic cozy style and it was fun to watch him get his comeuppance. Solid amateur sleuthing with enough twists to keep things interesting. And kind of an ominous cliffhanger ending when it comes to the fate of April's tea shop so I definitely need to pick up the second book and keep reading!

A cute little story. The writing is a bit awkward; many sentences contain more than one tense for no apparent reason. For example, a tea will be described in present tense, then its brewing preferences in past. In many of these cases, the information on brewing the tea is simply extraneous information; as an editor, I'd have recommended removing it.

I did not get a feel for most of the characters, particularly the men. The women are starting to fill out by the end of this volume, but the men are still painfully one-dimensional.

The kinks might be ironed out by the next book, but there are too many really good cozy mysteries out there. I'll try one of them.

A readable, cosy mystery set in Serenity Cove. April May ends up in the small town and buys an old Victorian House looking over the sea, a place to fulfil her and her mother's dreams of opening a tearooms. Her mother has since passed away, but this is still something she wants to do.

However, things are not what they seem, from a realtor who doesn't want to sell her the house; to issues with getting the correct permits; a chef only she can see; a police officer who seems destined to run her our of town and a dead body in her freezer. Things can only get better, can't they?

I enjoyed the book and have the next one downloaded.

Sweet tearoom cozy mystery

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Genre: Cozy mystery

☕ Set in a tea room by the California coast.

🍵 Features found family, a ghost chef (friendly type) and a heroic cat named Whisk.

☕ One murder and a crime. Multiple motives from various people.

Overall, I liked this book. The middle was a little slow and a tad rocky with the locals, but the ending more than made up for it. I would recommend this book, but make sure to have a cup of tea handy. 💖

Definitely will read the rest of the series later on.  Kinda hoping that the mayor gets what she deserves later on though. Lol

Her ‘someday’ came to April May when she traveled to Serenity Cove. A spur of the moment decision has her buying a Victorian home to finally open a tearoom. But as it turns out, all is not serene in Serenity Cove. Before she can open, a body is found in her freezer and to make matters worse a bumbling sheriff doesn’t look any further for a suspect than April May. Unlikely friendships, a hidden secret, a haunted Victorian plus delicious sounding recipes make this cozy a delightful read. I received an ARC of this book from the author. The review is my honest opinion.

This is the first in the Haunted Tea Room cozy series, and I really enjoyed it! I’m not normally a big fan of paranormal books, but a tea room in an old house with ghosts worked and I’m looking forward to reading the next one! April May decides to buy an old Victorian house and to set up a tea room on the first floor with living quarters on the second. What she didn’t plan on was a murder, and becoming the main suspect! This is a fun cozy with very likable characters, including the French Chef ghost! I am definitely looking forward to reading the next book in the series!

I enjoyed ‘Tea is for Trouble’ by Karen Sue Walker so much. I especially loved listening to Mary Castillo read it on Audible. She is such an incredible storyteller, and her voice was just perfect for this cozy mystery!

April May buys a huge Victorian home in a small town and inherits the ghost of a French chef with it. She plans to open a tea room, but ends up getting caught up in a murder mystery. The colorful cast of small town characters make this novel so entertaining and all the twists and turns in the story kept me listening for hours. This one is a real treat!
