Alf Prøysen (23 July 1914 – 23 November 1970), was a writer and musician from Norway. His Mrs. Pepperpot books established him as a children's author. Prøysen was one of the most important Norwegian cultural personalities in the second half of the twentieth century, and he made significant contributions to literature, music, TV and radio.
This was recommended to us by a friend who loved the stories as a child- I had never read them until now! While they are mostly fun adventure stories with some good lessons, there some things to be aware of. In the first story was an instance of racism. I felt uncomfortable reading it out loud to my son, so I stopped and explained to him that making fun of another person's culture or ethnicity is not ok.
Gorgeous little stories, many with a little life lesson in them. 5-7 yrs will love them. The whole exciting possibility of a little old lady who can shrink down so small, AND talk to the animals! Doesn't get much better for our little imagination munchkins.
What a lovely book - only took about 20 minutes to read cover to cover lol, I think when you need something light and happy everyone should read a childrens book once in a while!
I read this with my children, and some stories were more successful than others. Those that worked were the ones where Mrs Pepperpot had adventures with children or animals, less successful were the ones featuring her husband or her friends. The Mrs Pepperpot collections overall are a good precursor to chapter books.
I think it was a bit misconstrued the way Mrs. Pepperpot helped the girl because she was so horrid, as though her being horrid warranted her being rewarded, which is not the wisest message to be sending to young readers.
This was one of my middle grade books for May. I adore Mrs Pepperpot. Her adventures are so fun and the message they give is good. Would recommend these books.
A lovely selection of short stories perfect for small children or young independent readers! I personally loved the story of ‘How the king learned to eat porridge’.
This is a Norwegian children's story, published in 1963, that I picked up cheaply at a used book sale just because it looked like an interesting, old, children's book. I had never heard of Mrs. Pepperpot before, though apparently there were several books in this series as this is listed as the third book. Not knowing the story of the first books, I don't really know why Mrs. Pepperpot suddenly shrinks to become small (which is what leads her to have the adventures she goes on), but the stories were amusing all the same.
I got this when I was 6 or 7, but didn't bother to read it until now ha! well, I wished I did back when I was a kid, because it's a enjoyable story, lovely characters like Mrs. Pepperpot and her annoying husband, interesting adventures made by her, I think there was a point for a child to understand at the end of the story, readable! Let your kids or your siblings read it, and if they're not old enough, read it for them, it's worth it!
More delightful tales about the little old lady who shrinks to the size of a pepperpot. This volume includes tales of Mrs Pepperpot skiing in a race (inside the skier's cap), riding a rocket at the Midsummer bonfire, and almost being trampled by a moose, as well as the very humorous tale of how the king learned to eat porridge. I forgot how charming Mrs Pepperpot's stories were, but they've been a wonderful read even at the age of 30. 4 stars.
This was the first book I remember reading really, I remember going to buy it too! Loved the stories, the adventure and the photo cover! I treasured it!
