Elizabeth Goudge was an English author of novels, short stories and children's books.

Elizabeth de Beauchamp Goudge was born on 24 April 1900 in Wells, Somerset, in Tower House close by the cathedral in an area known as The Liberty, Her father, the Reverend Henry Leighton Goudge, taught in the cathedral school. Her mother was Miss Ida Collenette from the Channel Isles. Elizabeth was an only child. The family moved to Ely for a Canonry as Principal of the theological college. Later, when her father was made Regius Professor of Divinity at Oxford, they moved to Christ Church, Oxford.
She went to boarding school during WWI and later to Arts College, presumably at Reading College. She made a small living as teacher, and continued to live with her parents. During this time, she wrote a few plays, and was encouraged to write novels by a publisher. As her writing career took off, she began to travel to other nations. Unfortunately, she suffered from depression for much of her life. She had great empathy for people and a talent for finding the comic side of things, displayed to great effect in her writing.

Goudge's first book, The Fairies' Baby and Other Stories (1919), was a failure and it was several years before she authored Island Magic (1934), which is based on Channel Island stories, many of which she had learned from her mother, who was from Guernsey. After the death of her father, Goudge and her mother went to Devon, and eventually wound up living there in a small cottage. There, she wrote prolifically and was happy.

After the death of her mother, and at the wishes of Goudge's family who wished her to live closer to them, she found a companion who moved with her to Rose Cottage in Reading. She lived out her life there, and had many dogs in her life. Goudge loved dogs, and much preferred their company to that of humans. She continued to write until shortly before her death, when ill health, successive falls, and cataracts hindered her ability to write. She was much loved.

Goudge was awarded the Carnegie Medal for The Little White Horse (1946), the book which J. K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter stories, has said was her favorite as a child. The television mini-series Moonacre was based on The Little White Horse. Her Green Dolphin Country (1944) was made into a film (under its American title, Green Dolphin Street) which won the Academy Award for Special Effects in 1948.

A Diary of Prayer (1966) was one of Goudge's last works. She spent her last years in her cottage on Peppard Common, just outside Henley-on-Thames, where a blue plaque was unveiled in 2008.

I loved this collection of short stories which portray the true spirit of Christmas. Each story includes a black and white illustration. Some stories are classics, such as Rebecca Caudill's "A Certain Small Shepherd" and Henry Van Dyke's "The Other Wise Man." Others are by well-known authors such as Katherine Paterson, Elizabeth Goudge, and Madeleine L'Engle. I normally do not keep fiction books after reading them, but I will keep this collection because I anticipate re-reading it in Christmases to come. It's that good! I received this through LibraryThing's Early Reviewer program with the expectation of an honest review.

I love that all of these stories were truly focused on the Reason for the Christmas season. While I love the classic stories that remind readers of the hope and charity Christmas should inspire, the stories in this collection all had Jesus at their core. There were some that felt a tad off to me theologically, but I still appreciated the fact that Christ was the focal point. My favorite in the collection was “The Other Wise Man” by Henry van Dyke. It was beautifully written, thought-provoking, and just lovely all around.

Other stories that I really enjoyed:

• Three Young Kings by George Sumner Albee
• Transfiguration by Madeleine L'Engle
• Christmas Day in the Morning by Pearl S. Buck
• The Miraculous Staircase by Arthur Gordon
• The Christmas Lie by Dorothy Thomas
• The Empty Cup by Opal Menius
• The Well of the Star by Elizabeth Goudge
• The Christmas Rose by Selma Lagerlöf

This is an interesting collection of short stories for the Christmas season. There are some well known stories like “The Other Wise Man.” There are some well known authors represented, like Pearl S. Buck and Madeleine L'Engle. There are a number of authors I have never heard of. They seem to be included in the collection because of the literary value of their work. Some of the stories are uplifting and touching while others are a bit dark. The settings of the stories show a broad range, from Europe to the Holy Land to Cuba to America. Included are original woodcut illustrations by David Klein.

There are a total of twenty stories included. They seem to be more literary in style than would normally appeal to contemporary children. Some were humorous while others were sort of dark and others ended abruptly and seemed open ended. I would certainly suggest reading each story first before reading it to a child. Some evangelical Christians may be surprised at the many stories involving (Catholic) priests, fathers and sisters. Some of the stories are not specifically about Christ's birth but do deal with general Christian principles, such as acceptance or kindness. I am sure some stories will be brought into family traditions while others may not be included.

It is a collection that was originally released in 2014 and has been reissued in hardcover this Fall.

I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

It's often difficult to write stories that fit an inspirational Christmas theme but aren't sappy. The stories collected here have the dramatic heft that is usually lacking in Christmas stories. Even the stories that aim for fable-like simplicity have some compelling twist or a writing style that makes the usual seem incredible. Beautifully done, and well worth reading.

Twenty lovely stories of Christmas by authors including Pearl S. Buck, Madeleine L’Engle, and Katherine Paterson and other authors who were new to me. Some of these stories resonated with me more than others, but it’s a beautiful collection that reminded me to slow down and to savor the Christmas season.

Especially enjoyed…

This book is a keeper! I saw it on Amazon and I immediately put it on my wish list. I knew I would love it, and I did. Each story is by a different author and there are several stories to read.

I did have some favorites and the endings were sweet. There were some where I thought the ending could of been better, but not every author writes with a Hollywood ending, so I respect that.

Each story begins with an illustrated picture. I love that!

I just really enjoyed reading this book and plan on reading it again.

Twenty short stories. Twenty contributors. One theme. As many popular singers croon the Christmas song, "I'll Be Home For Christmas," this collection of stories warms the hearts as many people prepare for another busy Christmas season. Just like many of us remember well how a song goes, we too could remember stories better than mere theories or concepts. Stories like "Brother Robber" remind us about forgiveness. The "Three Young Kings" tells of the gospel touches us in spite of our mischiefs and misdeeds. Madeleine L'Engle writes about a "Sister Egg" whose name is often a conversation starter as she ministers to the homeless on the streets. Nikolai Lesskov shares the story of how one could be eloquent about the faith and yet unable to overcome the hurts over injustice. It takes a new revelation of the meaning of Christ's coming that unlocks the path toward healing. Pearl S Buck shares the story of a Christmas Day morning and how a son gave his father a lovely Christmas surprise. Henry Van Dyke begins the story of the three wise men before dropping in a surprise fourth "Wise Man." This man journeyed in faith, playing catch-up after failing to keep up with his three other friends. Adding some drama into the gaps between the birth of Jesus and the trial of Jesus, the story details how this man follows the Person and Life of Christ, to offer his gift of ministry. All the stories were told around what was revealed in Holy Scriptures. From the birth narrative of Jesus, the parables Jesus taught, to the life of Jesus' ministry, the twenty authors focus on a unique theme of the coming of Jesus to show us a compelling picture of the reason why Jesus came to earth.

Apart from the authors mentioned above, some of the other authors come from countries such as Cuba, Germany, Siberia, Palestine, Denmark, Spain, as well the USA, and descriptions of Canada. The stories are intriguing because not only do they come from the pens of some of the most creative literary writers, they are seen from the lens of ordinary people, about the meandering thoughts surrounding Christmas. The story of Barney Hatch the panhandler is one prime example. Like a chain of Christmas lights, author BJ Chute strings together some of the most familiar Christmas symbols such as Church bells, church towers, wreaths, Christmas decorations, Christmas shopping sprees, pine trees, jingles, and even Santa Claus. As the panhandler shifts from asking for donations to becoming a Santa Claus at a store promising to give wishes, he realized that having a few more dollars in his pocket led to a tough call between buying for a little boy a harmonica he promised and a bottle of whisky he wanted for Christmas. It prompts us with the question: "What would you do with your limited resources? Bless someone or to bless yourself?"

Stories have that special touch to communicate anything. The Christmas message has always been about the birth of Jesus, but for much of the world, it continues to be about the busyness of shopping, commerce activities, year-end festivities, and other secular forms of celebrations. With biblical themes flowing through the veins of these stories, readers will enjoy the rich reminders about the spirituality of Christmas. We have all been bombarded by messages that Christmas is a time of giving, of gifting, and of forgiving. This book does not only these but elevates the message through multiple cultures and creative literary lenses. Here's a hint: Don't rush through the stories. There is more than one message within each story. The longer and slower you dwell in them, the more you would discover.

Rating: 4.25 stars of 5.

This Christmas didn't feel very festive and I wasn't in the spirit. Started this book of short holiday stories on Christmas Day; it wasn't the best choice, all things considered, and probably my unmerry mood influenced my enjoyment (or lack thereof). It did contain a few gems, several of which I have encountered in years past, but it's not likely that I would pick up this particular volume again in the future.

Brief notes below :

1. Brother Robber (Helene Christaller) |⭐⭐⭐⭐| Mercy and compassion, forgiveness and redemption. Brings to mind the story of King Wenceslas somehow.

2. Three Young Kings (George Sumner Albee) |⭐⭐⭐| Compassion and regard for the poor.

3. Transfiguration (Madeleine L'Engle) |⭐⭐⭐| Sharing what you have and pointing others to Christ.

4. The Cribmaker's Trip to Heaven (Reimmichl) |⭐⭐⭐⭐| Pride and selfishness confronted. Very much in the vein of C.S. Lewis' "The Great Divorce," also reminiscent of Dickens' "A Christmas Carol."

5. The Guest (Nikolai S. Lesskov) |⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐| A beautiful story, told -  with some variation - in many cultures, of waiting for the Lord to visit. How do we treat those who come to us while we wait for Him?

6. Christmas Day in the Morning (Pearl S. Buck) |⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐| A man reflects on his boyhood Christmas gift to his father, and prepares a similar surprise for his own wife.

7. The Other Wise Man (Henry van Dyke) |⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐| A life spent in searching for the Saviour. This story always makes me weep.

8. The Miraculous Staircase (Arthur Gordon) |⭐⭐⭐| The legend of a real place and the mysterious construction of its spiral staircase, within the Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe, NM.

9. No Room in the Inn (Katherine Paterson) |⭐⭐⭐| Remembrance of Mary and Joseph being turned away so long ago helps a young man move from selfishness to [the beginnings of] compassion towards a needy family.

10. The Chess Player (Ger Koopman) |⭐⭐⭐| Cold hearts grow warm.

11. The Christmas Lie (Dorothy Thomas) |⭐⭐⭐⭐| A little girl impulsively tells a falsehood and spends the next several days trying to find the courage to tell the truth.

12. The Riders of St. Nicholas (Jack Schaefer) |⭐⭐⭐| Good story but couched in a LOT of swearing.

13. Grandfather's Stories (Ernst Wiechert) |⭐⭐| An old man tells two stories his grandfather had told him.

14. The Vexation of Barney Hatch (B.J. Chute) |⭐⭐⭐| An unexpected and begrudging Christmas sacrifice makes the holiday unforgettable for two unlikely companions.

15. The Empty Cup (Opal Menius) |⭐⭐⭐| A brush with the young Saviour heals a woman's broken heart.

16. The Well of the Star (Elizabeth Goudge) |⭐⭐⭐| A little boy meets the newborn King.

17. A Certain Small Shepherd (Rebecca Caudill) |⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐| A Christmas miracle for a mute little boy.

18. The Carpenter's Christmas (Peter K. Rosegger) |⭐⭐| A village is faced with its hypocrisy when a needy family is neglected in favor of "welcoming the Christ Child." Note: arguments, insults, and religious profanity.

19. What the Kings Brought (Ruth Sawyer) |⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐| A beautiful story of compassion and generosity.

20. The Christmas Rose (Selma Lagerlöf) |⭐⭐| Not sure what to say about this one. Sad and kind of unsettling? Fairytale-esque?

Thanks to LibraryThing & Plough Publishing House for an advance reader's copy. All comments and opinions are my own.

This was a beautiful collection of short stories with the common theme of Christmas. It would make a wonderful gift for a family, and what a lovely tradition to gather round in the days before Christmas and read a story together each evening. There are 20 short stories, some longer than others, but each ultimately touching the heart as it conveys the true meaning of Christmas - treating people with kindness. Most of the stories were poignant, gentle, and seemed to be taken from a variety of folk tales, legends, and everyday people, representative of various countries and time periods. Writers include Madeleine L'Engle, Pearl S. Buck, Henry van Dyke and many authors I wasn't familiar with, but all were skilled.

While I enjoyed the book, I am taking off a star for the illustrations that introduce each story. They were done as black and white woodcuts, and almost all of them were scary looking and rather ugly. They presented the opposite of the warm and compassionate emotions you would feel while reading this collection. I kept asking myself: who chose this illustrator? Why use artwork that transmits harshness and fear?

But don't let the illustrations deter you, as this is ultimately a book of warmth and spiritual integrity that will resonate with readers of all ages, for years to come.

A special quote by Emmy Arnold introduces the book, and sets the stage for the stories on the following pages: "Even though Christmas is exploited for profit, even though its meaning is often corrupted, it is still the time of year that we feel the impulse to think of others. It is still the season of anticipation and joy. The brightness and fragrance of a Christmas tree under which gifts are laid - here is light and warmth; here is life and love."

Home for Christmas is a collection of twenty Christmas stories that bring me back to my childhood--not because I read the stories when I was young, but because they carry the energy and nostalgia of my younger years.

Christmas is, by far, my favorite holiday. It is a special season that shares the love, sacrifice, and mercy of our God with the world, and inspires us all to think of others. This compilation oozes with the spirit of the season and shares Christmas stories of various countries, cultures, and communities, as well as the Christian aspect.

If you're looking for a staple book to read each year during the holiday season that will entertain and inspire you, Home for Christmas is a wonderful choice. Especially the hardback design with a nostalgic glossy illustration on the cover.

Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book. My review was not influenced.

“Home for Christmas” is a delightful collection of 20 tales, each by a different author, having some connection to Christmas. They extend from 8 to thirty pages. A few may seem familiar, the development of some predictable, but a few surprises add spice to the anthology. Drawn from a variety of cultures, each presents the spirit of Christmas in its own unique way.

I started reading this during the last week in Advent and planned to stop on Christmas or the day after and move on to the book for my next book club meeting. When my deadline came, I did not want to set it aside. I could read for another day, savor it for two, oh heck, the book club can wait until I have drawn every sip of enjoyment from this one.

“Home for Christmas” is a joy during the holiday season, or anytime you need your spirits lifted or a little of the magic of Christmas.

Christmas is one of my favorite holidays. It has always been a special time for me. There are 20 wonderful stories written by well known authors. There are other stories tha were unknown to me and may be to you. Those stories have been translated from other languages. Reading these stories made me feel a warm glow within. I felt comfort and hope from reading the stories. The stories enclosed that you may know isn’t the whole story and you may discover an alternative ending.

This is a book to treasure as it definitely will remind you about the Christmas spirit and love. It’s an amazing book to read.

Disclaimer: I received an arc of this book from the author/publisher from Netgalley. I wasn’t obligated to write a favorable review or any review at all. The opinions expressed are strictly my own.

Though I'm unfamiliar with some of these writers, I'm delighted to get to know them in this book! There is something so cozy about a book of short stories, especially with themes of Christmas and the values that traditionally come with them.

This is a book for old souls or for those who hope to develop the old souls in your own children. Most of the stories aren't explicitly focused on Christ's birth, but they're stories with Truth as their guide.

I'm still working my way through the stories, seeing as I'm writing this in August, slowly approaching them like a wise ten year old who takes his or her time to eat the Christmas candy. I can't wait to make some of these stories part of our tradition.

I received a digital advance copy of this book. All words and opinions are my own.

Home for Christmas is a classic collection of Stories for Young and Old by many well known authors such as Henry van Dyke, Pearl S. Buck, B. J. Chute, Ruth Sawyer, Elizabeth Goudge, Selma Lagerlöf, Rebecca Caudill, and Madeleine L'Engle. A few of them were not as well known to me but wrote lovely, beautiful stories.

Some of these stories reminded me of my childhood when I first experienced reading them. Wonderful stories with wonderful memories. Others that were new touched my heart too. Many of the stories are heartwarming and seeming simply at first glance but all have a big idea and lesson to be pondered. All in all a rare collection.

The publisher through Net Galley provided a digital ARC. I have voluntarily decided to read and review, giving my personal opinions and thoughts.

This is a nice collection of holiday stories. Many are classics that I've read throughout the years, such as "The Other Wise Man" by Henry van Dyke, and "Christmas Day in the Morning" by Pearl Buck. Others, I had never seen before, but all of the stories had a classic feel.

One of my favorites was "Three Yung Kings" which told of three boys chosen to be the Three Kings riding through town distributing presents.

Some of the stories are sent in the far past, and some are set in more modern times. I didn't feel like any of them was too preachy, but they were heartwarming.

This book would make a good holiday gift for self or others - and reading the stories will be a good holiday tradition.

Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for letting me read an advance copy.

Home for Christmas is an anthology of short stories that celebrate the true meaning of Christmas. Some stories are from well-known authors like Pearl S. Buck and Madeleine L'Engle. Others are little known offerings from different countries. They're not sappy or cloyingly sentimental, but they are beautiful. Every story is a gem.

These are the kind of stories you want to read every year until they become part of the family. The wood engraving-style illustrations are beautiful in their simplicity, and add to the overall homey feeling of the book. Home for Christmas is a lovely book that would make a perfect gift for anyone of any age.

This is an adorable book. I read it on my Kindle, but I can't wait to see it in print as the woodcuts are wonderful. There are multiple short stories, all centered around Christmas. Some of them make you think, some make you smile, several may make you cry. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and I think that there may be several people receiving this book as a gift from me this Christmas. I wish it had gone on and on and on. It captures the meaning of Christmas.

This was an excellent collection of Christmas stories, and I look forward to reading it again when the holiday season rolls around. With such a wide range of authors, with varying backgrounds, the book includes a nice variety of voices and tones. Each story is unique, tied together by the spirit of Christmas. I love how the book is accessible for such a wide range of readers, and I could definitely see reading the stories together as a family (just not all in one sitting). You'll want to grab a cup of hot cocoa before curling up with this one.

I love Christmas short story treasuries. I love discovering old Christmas stories - from the 1800s and early 1900s. This one has 20 stories. What I found unique about this collection was that some of the stories were appearing in English for the first time. The stories are touching. Some will have you reflecting on your own attitudes. Twenty Christmas short stories that range from the religious, nativity-centered to the secular about a store Santa, but all were endearing in their own way. I only recognized two (The Story of the Other Wise Msn by Henry van Dyke and Christmas Day in the Morning by Pearl Buck) but found a few new favorites, like The Well of the Star (Elizabeth Goudge), The Empty Cup (Opal Menius), and Three Young Kings (George Sumner Albee).

This is a wonderful collection of short stories, some of which are either true or based on true events, and others that fall in the realm of fables. All reprints or excerpts from longer works, the original publication dates range from 1899 to 2014, and come from countries around the world. Heartwarming, sometimes challenging, always fresh even if over a century old! Loved this book.
