Arson investigation is not exactly what firefighter Kate Chambers signed up for. But she doesn't have a choice when an injury forces her off the engine and into the office. Her first case, a fire at a downtown bar, is a clear-cut instance of insurance fraud, or so she thinks. But the property co-owner and prime suspect, Alexi Clark, has spent too many years battling her own demons to quietly go to jail for a crime she didn't commit. Soon Alexi is fighting both the false charges against her and an unexpected attraction to the investigator determined to prove them. Amid a blaze that threatens to consume them both, Kate and Alexi redefine love and trust.
Born and raised in Upstate New York, Erin Dutton moved to Nashville, Tennessee several years ago. No longer a Yankee, and yet not a true Southerner, she remains somewhere between the two, and is happy to claim both places as home. Her days are spent earning a living, while her nights and weekends are divided between several of her favorite things: writing, reading, golf, and her friends. Erin is the author of ten romance novels and the recipient of the 2011 Alice B. Medal for body of work.
3 1/2 Stars. An ex-firefighter turned arson investigator, must figure out if the new woman in her life is date-able, an arson suspect, or both. Both main characters are pretty likeable. The romance was decent and the mystery OK. I wish it took a little longer to figure out who the arsonist is, but the clues were pretty straightforward, so it's easy. This is not a gritty crime/mystery/arson book. I would consider this an excellent beach read. Even-though, this book deals with tough subjects like alcoholism, it's not heavy or preachy, and it still maintains a lighter beach-y feel. I got through this book quickly, and enjoyed it. There's nothing earth shattering or life changing, about this book, but it's still slightly better than OK, on my reading scale. I would recommend this book to lovers of just romance and or crime/mystery. It would be a good choice for someone newer to the crime genera, if they wanted a lighter book to ease them in.
2.5 star ratings This was laborious to read. The style of writing was unnecessarily elongated...I mean how can 3 pages be dedicated to Alex getting dressed before she sees Kate who is right in her apartment? This is certainly one of my least liked by this author.
A story with nice and sad moments about two women who find themselves falling for each other despite the difficult circumstances that involve them and the professional ethics that forbid them to be together.
The story is not really focused on the romance, however when these characters are together the attraction takes place in every occasion even when the situations were difficult and the environment was not the appropriate for an easy romance to blossom.
Both characters are likable, at first there wasn’t enough description of them but later on the author makes sure to be more specific about this fact. Also, the chemistry is okay, not necessarily in the beginning of the book but as they see each other more often the attraction and attitudes between them start to reflect their interest for one another, even when one of the characters had a difficult past.
One thing I found quite unnerving was how slow-paced it was for the romance to be developed. I felt the need to flick thru the pages till I could find something substantial or useful. However, the strict in me didn’t allow me that treat. Anyway, once that part arrives the book takes a much better vibe and the main characters really start to develop something towards each other, accepting their fears and flaws and overcoming them thanks to the feeling growing between them.
The secondary characters were interesting; all of them had an interesting input on the story. I have to say that my favorite was Kate’s friend (Paula) who I found really funny and refreshing in the plot, especially because there were some heartbreaking moments and it’s always good to read some humor in the midst of a story.
Now that I mentioned one of the secondary characters (Paula), this leads me to say that I’d have loved to read a story between her and her serious conquest (Doctor). I think it’d have been a very interesting reading to know about this couple since one of them is really funny, but not in this book because I always love to read only about one romance. And since that was one flaw I found in this book I guess it was better not to talk much about the other couple, but for another book perhaps?
About the love/sex scenes, they were well portrayed and sweet. Most of all because there is passion between them and the spark is alive. Also, it was a way of healing for one of the characters. Nicely done.
Finally the need of an epilogue is evident, especially for the lack of development in the relationship but all in all I think this was a nice story.
Dutton romance from 2009. Kate Chambers in on her first arson investigation case. She has been a firefighter and is still coming to grips to the injury that has taken her away from the being the firefighter that she always wanted to be. A bar is torched and of course the owners are the first suspects. Kate focuses on Alexi Clark as the spouse of the other partner offered an alibi for her husband. This one didn't work for me much as a romance. Because one is a suspect they really can't spend much time together. Also Alexi is angry that she is a suspect but she also isn't honest in the investigation. The resolution was predictable. Effort was made to give the MCs good back stories but the romance was meh.
Don't think I've read an Erin Dutton book that I didn't like. This book has a recovering alcoholic as a lead. So, one sees how addiction can impact and affect life decisions. The protagonists don't have perfect situations in their lives, but of course, manage to find romance and hope. I might have said this before, but I do wish the book to be longer. Unfortunately, I find the book's length is not really unusual for a lesbian romance novel.
Great story, although it contains many cliches of lesbian fiction its well written well the characters are likeable and I couldn't wait to find out what happened next. You can't ask for more from this genre than a satisfying read.
Es casi un 3. Tiene algunas cosas buenas así como algunas malas. Pero dentro de todo no es de lo peor que anda en la vuelta. Y en algunas cositas sale de lo habitual.
This book was ok. It wasn't hard to figure out who the arsonist was. I would have enjoyed it more if the plot was more complex with some actual twists and turns. I didn't feel a real connection to the characters and at times the dialogue seemed stilted and the action formulaic. Like i said, it was an ok read but could have been a lot more intriguing and exciting.
wonderful story...enjoyed the read...which didn't take long....one long day or 2 half and done :( wish it was not longer, but that's just selfish me. I would extend the length of all books I like.
