Committed!
In the author’s preview Ms. Anderson states, “What if the Kindred had never come to Earth?” The novel Committed explores that possibility. She starts back at the beginning of the whole set of novels, Brides of the Kindred. She also states that Committed is the story of the very first Bride from Earth.
The name of this story, Committed, is a good one because our hero and heroine are experiencing two different meanings of committed. Both of the main characters, Vic and Torri, become devoted to their goal of saving Earth from the AllFather and the Scourge. But the Scourge have a weapon, The Eye of Ten’gu, that has the power to reach back in time and change one small thing that will completely change the flow of history so the Kindred never come to Earth at all. Since Torri has an inherited gift from her grandmother of being able to see into the future, she is trying to convince the authorities the Evil is coming. When she and Vic join forces to let the Mother Ship, the huge vessel the Kindred travel in, know about the AllFather being so close, they form a partnership to halt the imminent disaster.
Vic and Torri are also committed in a different way. When Vic suddenly appears in the President’s office, he discovers he is unable to speak. The tiny thing the Eye had changed was linked to Vic’s ability to communicate. He cannot even tell the officials he has come to negotiate peace and an exchange of cultures with the Kindred. Fearful of him, the officials have him committed to St. Elizabeth’s Mental Hospital. Unknown to her, Torri’s husband has also had her committed to the same mental hospital, saying her Night Terrors when she’s dreaming caused her to thrash and scream, disturbing the entire neighborhood. Vic finds he is able to enter her dreams and save her from the monsters, an ability he has never had before.
Their struggle to escape the hospital and contact the Kindred makes up a good part of the book. They have to face some very difficult situations, but if they can’t succeed in their mission, the Scourge will indeed overcome Earth. The Kindred will never come to Earth, and the entire history of the Kindred will be completely changed.
The mental hospital reminded me of a book that was popular in the 1940’s, The Snake Pit. That book also tells the horrors of a badly run mental hospital. The dangers Torri was in made me very afraid for her. Vic’s treatment by the staff further caused me to wonder just where Ms. Anderson was going with her plot line. I felt I was reading something very different from any other of the Brides book. Another story, The Butterfly Effect, also shows what one small change in ancient history changed Earth forever. However,Committed did have some humorous spots to alleviate the seriousness of their situations when we get to see characters we’ve already met in the first set of novels.
I have been reading Ms. Anderson’s books for some time now, but the premise of Committed is very different from all of them. I’m certain the ideas presented here will last in my memories quite some time. For me, it became one of those books I didn’t want to stop reading.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
