Alan the Crocodile likes to scare the other animals in the jungle. It’s all he knows how to do. Every morning he polishes his scales, sharpens his nails, brushes each of his teeth for ten minutes and practices his frightening faces in the mirror, then he sets off to go and do some scaring. Returning home later that day filled with joy.

However, Alan has a secret. His big teeth are not real, they are false. When he loses his teeth he doesn’t know what he will do as all he knows how is scaring the animals. Do you think they will still be frightened of a toothless Crocodile?

Alan’s Big, Scary Teeth is a very funny young children’s book about a Crocodile and his life of scaring the others in the jungle. I read the board book, which is great for little ones as they can be rough with the pages and not ruin the book.

The whole plot was enjoyable and I love what happens after the other animals find his teeth and give them back to him.

The illustrations are brilliant. I love the scary faces that Alan pulls. I also love the little items dotted around the images. Children might not notice them, but I’m sure the adults reading the book will – Eau De Gator perfume, The Jungle Times newspaper, etc.

This is a lovely, short book, that is a whole lot of fun and I can see it becoming a firm favourite with kids.

Alan the alligator loves being scary, and a big part of what makes him scary are his BIG SCARY TEETH.
But, when all the other jungle animals find out his big, BIG secret, Alan just doesn't seem so scary anymore.

This is a fun story, and I love the author's bold, colorful illustrations!

Alan the alligator was from a long line of alligators and he was known throughout the jungle for his scaring habits. Every morning after polishing his scary teeth and practising his scary looks in the mirror he went into the jungle for his morning round of scaring. 'I love being scary,' he cried as he scared all the animals in the jungle.

Everyday after a long day of scaring he returned home to complete the crossword in 'Jungle Times' and, more importantly, to take out his false teeth. And nobody knew that he wore false teeth so he always put them safely away in his secret hiding place.

But Barry the Beaver, early one morning, discovered them and hid them away. Consequently Alan's jungle visit later that morning was not so scary and the animals laughed at him. Alan was no longer scary!

He went home most upset and he cried for some time. Next morning the animals approached Alan and said they would give him his teeth back on one condition ... and that was not to be so scary with them.

Alan agreed and he took up a variety of roles that pleased the animals and the only time he was scary was when he told Scary Stories to them. And he even lent Barry the Beaver his scary teeth on occasions ... Barry did look a sight!

A fun book, nicely illustrated by the author and scary enough for the children to enjoy!

Ultimat sagostundsbok.

Zoals mijn kleinkinderen.

Alan is keeping a secret. His scary alligator teeth that he has been using to scare the other animals are really false teeth. Everything changes when the truth is revealed. The large expressive illustrations, the lively text, and the gently humorous ending make this a fun book to read independently or share.

I laughed out loud while reading this book to Alena today. She likes the book too. I read Alan's voice in a very loud, low, scary way. It was hilarious how Alena reacted with loud noises of her own. This one has fun illustrations and a good message too.

Definitely has too much text for an infant's board book but would be hilarious for an older pre-schooler.

Pretty fun. In addition to some good lessons about cooperating and adapting, kids should enjoy the absurdity of an alligator who needs (and has lost) his dentures.

Jarvis’ funny picture book about an alligator with a secret is now available for the board book crowd. Alan loves scaring the other animals in the jungle – “It was what he did best.” However, what no one knows is that Alan has false teeth which he removes and hides when he goes to sleep. One morning Barry the beaver discovers Alan’s teeth by accident, and when Alan wakes up from his nap, his teeth are gone! Will the animals notice his toothlessness on his morning rounds of scaring them? It turns out they do – instead of running in fear, the animals roar with laughter. Alan is mortified and runs back to his swamp to cry. Then the animals propose a deal that Alan cannot refuse. The results leave everyone happy.

Jarvis’s exuberant mixed media art and adorable, big eyed jungle denizens will delight young readers. Alan has all the big feels that toddlers will identify with, and even though he starts out scary, he is redeemed. Maybe there’s a moral here, but the fun of the story is reason enough to pick the book up. Also, it’s nice to find a board book with an actual story line.

Jarvis Alan’s Big Scary Teeth, PICTURE BOOK. Candlewick Press, 2016. $16.99

Alan the Alligator prides himself on being scary. That’s what he does all day - scares the animals in the jungle. But at night, he takes out his teeth because they are false teeth. When Barry the Beaver discovers Alan’s secret, he takes the teeth and tells the other animals. Now everyone is laughing at Alan and he certainly isn’t scary anymore. The animals make a deal with Alan, that changes his role in the jungle.

This is a really great picture book. The writing is terrific - the way Alan talks without his teeth is hilarious. The pictures are whimsical and bright, and tell as much of the story as the text does. A great choice for a pre-schooler.

This started out a little meh for me, and then turned to enjoyment. Fun twist--fun possibility to read aloud in storytime. Loved the ending with the beaver. Made me smile. Not oh my goodness amazing. But fun and one kids will probably enjoy.

3/10/18 SD picked this for bedtime read. She smiled, but didn't seem to laugh as much as I thought she could. It was also a very late night. Maybe she missed a couple of things. But she still enjoyed. Was confused about why he was telling scary stories when he promised not to be scary anymore..... yeah.

9/19/18 Closer in What Big Teeth theme. Not as many reactions as the other two books, but they still set well and got smiles when they learned his teeth weren't real, and the Beaver wearing them at end.

Great read. Henry and storytime kids are big fans.
I always feel so bad for Alan when he cries. (When I read it at storytime I shorten that part. Poor Alan.)

This is a very funny board book with some great illustrations and a brilliant twist. Alan is an alligator and comes from a long line of scary alligators. Everyday after brushing his teeth, he goes into the jungle to scare everyone. All the jungle animals are scared of Alan and his big scary teeth, and Alan enjoys scaring them. But when he’s alone Alan reveals his not-so-scary secret, a secret which none of the jungle animals can ever find out!

This board book is around A5 in size and is filled with a lot of very colourful matt board pages which are rounded at the corners. The entire book has a matt finish but all the writing and images on the front cover (except for the yellow) has a glossy finish. The story is very funny and I enjoyed reading it. I don’t really want to give away what Alan’s secret is, but it’s to do with his teeth and the animals eventually find out. The story has a lot of humour both in the illustrations and the actual tale. It’s a typical story where, despite finding out about his secret, the animals and Alan eventually become friends

The pictures are what I love about Jarvis’s books so much. They’re very funny and I love the fact that every page has something extra to spot, from little creatures with funny expressions flying around or sitting on leaves to the words of the newspaper and various other things, there’s lots of funny things in each image as well as the funny overall look of all the creatures and Alan. Each page or double page also has a lot of colour which makes the different animals stand out in each picture and I do like the way that the whole book has a sort of block style images with pen to mark out features, it makes a fun change from illustrations that always have a black outline.

The ending of the story is a nice one with Alan’s secret ultimately coming out and not bothering the animals once they’ve had a talk to him. The whole book makes me laugh, even after reading it through the first time and I think I’m definitely a fan of Jarvis and his books after also reading ‘Mrs Mole, I’m Home’ which I also loved. This is a funny book and I’m sure lots of kids and even some adults will enjoy. I’d definitely recommend it for a fun read, especially as it could also teach some kids that wanting to be mean to others isn’t a good thing.

This story is hilarious - I'm not embarrassed to admit it even made me chuckle to myself!

Alan comes from a long line of super scary alligators with perfectly sharp, sparkly white teeth to make that job all the more easy. But unfortunately Alan is hiding a pretty big secret. His teeth are FAKE! So, naturally, Alan hides his teeth when he goes to sleep so that all the animals he scares each day won't know he's a phoney. That is until one of them steals his teeth!

I liked Alan as a character - he's the kind of funny, "bad guy" who turns good and ends up having silly things happen to him; these kind of characters are particularly well received in this house. The other creatures and critters are also really colourful, which I liked because it's a good conversation starter, although not especially true to form (there is a blue beaver for instance) - this didn't matter to me though. I thought the story flowed so well, and made perfect sense to small readers, which isn't always the case with the sillier types of stories.

So I'd happily recommend you become acquainted with Alan - the not-so-scary "fake" alligator. He may even let you borrow his teeth!
