I’ve practiced mindfulness for 30+ years and am always on the lookout for fresh ideas and tools to help me go deeper into expanded consciousness. Eric Maisel’s “Redesign Your Mind,” did just that. I love how he found a way to make awareness practice FUN! His extended metaphor of renovating or redesigning "the room that is your mind,” gave me a new path to take in my practice. It was like opening a window or putting a fresh coat of paint on my usual way of seeing things! (Exactly his intention, I think!). I love the humor and playfulness Maisel brings throughout the book. It makes this work accessible to everyone, no matter where you are along the mindfulness journey. This book is for anyone who has an interest in living a more peaceful and enjoyable life. In these challenging times, who doesn’t want that?! I highly recommend this book — and already have to many people I know! (I received an advance copy from the publisher.)
Easy and full of examples. Personally, I think it could work, even if I have "studied too much" to evaluate something so basic and for beginners, but it is really well structured and provides insights organized according to the theory of small steps.
I received from the Publisher a complimentary digital advanced review copy of the book in exchange for a honest review.
With reading this book, I really did redesign my mind, and thus my behavior and attitude on life. It really is amazing. However. it was still a bit of a struggle to get through. He quite often referred and spoke about the creative mind so most of his examples were about artists which is not something I typically identify as so it took more mental power for me to process his words. My best advice would be to read the book every evening as you are winding down so you can read a chapter and then do the visualization prompt as you drift to sleep.
This book caters predominantly to creative individuals, offering tailored cognitive strategies to overcome psychological barriers often encountered in artistic pursuits. With a background in psychological counseling, the author provides a toolkit of techniques and visualizations aimed at empowering artists, writers, and performers.
The book's focus on vivid metaphors and imaginative visualizations reflects an understanding of the creative mindset. However, it may not suit those seeking a text with strong theoretical foundations or individuals with a preference for logical reasoning over visualization. Similarly, if you don't identify as a creative individual, the book's relevance may be limited.
Nevertheless, for those open to exploring new avenues of personal development, the coping strategies outlined in "Redesign Your Mind" offer valuable insights and practical techniques. Whether you're an artist striving to unleash your creative potential or simply intrigued by the intersection of psychology and personal growth, this book provides a fresh perspective worth considering.
The book's title sucked me in. Maisel spends 270 pages talking about 60 methods to 'redesign your mind' by creating a mindroom and implementing various cognitive behavioral techniques. It's all a little silly, really. And about halfway through the book I was ready to put it down and move onto something else. BUT the chapters are fairly brief and easy to digest in chunks like a daily devotional that I kept at it. Most of the book seems to be aimed at Creative types, but anyone can implement these methods to dealing with our feelings and stresses. I found a few of them helpful, but out of 60 I'll probably revisit none of them.
Journaling helped as I read this book. With all of the self-help books out there, it was a refreshing process for a real direction of a life time of just doing.
Some of the visualizations were great, while some others missed the mark a bit for me. All in all, worth the read but I'm glad it was just a library check out.
