Ruth Benedict, before her death in 1948, was a full professor at Columbia University and was recognized as one of the most eminent of American anthropologists. Her Patterns of Culture has been called a milestone in the development of anthropology; she is also well known for her study Race: Science and Politics. During the war she worked with the U.S. Office of War Information on occupied and enemy territories, and it was during this period that she extended and brought to fruition her long-standing interest in the people and culture of Japan.
