What happened to Jennifer Griffin?

Jennifer hasn’t returned home from her book club and Greg knows something is terribly wrong! As he heads out to search for her he only ends up creating a cloud of doubt around his own claim of innocence.

So…Was Greg involved in her disappearance? Is he concealing some juicy secrets? Can Jennifer be found before it’s too late?

I’ve been reading books by Rick Mofina for years. He’s definitely one of my always reliable, go-to authors. Both his series and solo works. This latest solo venture is a fine addition to his catalog of thrillers.

His writing is easy to follow drawing you deeply into the mystery. Each chapter leaving you wanting more. (What more could we ask for?!) If you haven’t tried one of his book this would be an ideal one to start with.

Already looking forward to his next!

Excellent mystery!

This book involves my favorite mystery trope--someone missing without a trace. Greg Griffin returns home one night, expecting his wife Jennifer to return an hour later after she finishes her book club meeting. He awakens at 1:30 am and she still isn't home. After calling around and driving the route, he realizes that she is well and truly missing and calls the police. This sets into motion a cascade of events that place Greg under suspicion and yet don't seem to be leading to what happened to Jennifer.

I was engrossed in the book from start to finish. I had many theories throughout, and I'm happy to say that the most obvious answers didn't turn out to be correct. When all is said and done this is a novel full of twists and surprises that are sure to please even the most seasoned mystery readers. The only reason I didn't rate the book higher was that I thought it was a bit too long and drawn out, and I while I love stories about missing people, I equally hate wrongfully accused characters and that got a bit tedious after a while.

Highly recommended for those who like a mysterious story about a missing wife and mother with a surprising storyline that takes many unexpected turns.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, all opinions are my own.

Rick Mofina knocks it out of the park in this who-dun-it crime thriller filled with family tragedy, suspense, plot twists, red-herrings (not pickled), multiple characters (with savory secrets), good world-building and easy on the eyes writing. Highly recommend!

A page-turner even if the story line stretches the limits of reality. A pretty decent mystery because the end certainly surprised me.

Greg’s wife Jenn vanishes into thin air on her way home from a book club meeting at a friend’s house.

From the first pages it is indicated that Greg was up to no good on the night Jess disappeared although we don’t know exactly what and the police have no idea so it’s a ploy to keep the reader on our toes.

The police procedure and the way they handle this case I can only hope is entirely fiction because if not I would be surprised if the police ever caught a guilty party. Do police really rush to judgement based on assumptions? (Yes, I think they do).
The DNA aspect was troubling as I wondered: Could that really happen? Are professionals really that sloppy? (Yes, it’s possible).

While the ending was a bit over the top I had a good time getting there.

If you read for pleasure not for the reality of police investigation procedures you’ll probably like this book.

***There is a section where the author gives the reader a look into the pros and cons of the lie detector test. Damned if you do and damned if you don’t. It’s a no-win option. And it’s not admissible in court so why do they continue to do it??? This was of particular interest since there was recently a discussion on GR about this very subject. ***

How well do we know our partners? Do we know all about their family history, lives, loves, and hates? If your partner went missing, would skeletons be falling out of the closet? For Greg, he gets home late one night and heads to bed. His wife is out at her book club and Greg expects her soon. He falls asleep and awakes early in the AM - he reaches his hand out and Jennifer's side is still empty. He phones his wife and no answer. Where can she be? This starts our mystery of Her Last Goodbye as Greg searches and contacts everyone he can think of as his wife Jennifer has vanished into thin air. Greg calls his Dad and sister and then the Police. Over the majority of the novel, we read as Greg's life is pulled apart as the detectives are convinced he is hiding something and is the number #1 suspect. What he doesn't realize though is that Jennifer's past has come back to bite her in the form of a wind chime. When Jennifer was eight years old, both her parents died in a house fire and now secrets about that time are being unearthed. I have to admit, that this book was different as it was more focused on Jennifer's family and that side of the fence rather than her experience missing and being kidnapped. I did feel the ending was a little rushed and the bit with the DNA near the end could have been expanded on a bit more. I have to admit that this book reminded me of Gone Girl which is a novel that I disliked and thought was overhyped. However, if you were one of those millions who loved Gone Girl as it did win the best thriller - what were you readers thinking? then you will love Rick Mofina's new psychological thriller "Her Last Goodbye"

This is usually a type of plot I enjoy but I just couldn’t get into it. The characters felt very flat, the dialogue was forced and the internal monologues made me cringe.

Her Last Goodbye is about missing mom Jenn. She leaves her book club meeting and then vanishes into thin air. Her husband is a prime suspect and both of them have plenty of secrets.

I had a hard time making sense of this villain’s motivation. The reveal wasn’t very satisfying and I didn’t really like any of the characters. I had my suspicions for who was behind it all from the very first part of the book and I ended up being spot on. The reason for why they did what they did just came out of left field and left me scratching my head.

Her Last Goodbye is my first Rick Mofina book and I will definitely be looking for more. This is the story of a young married mother who disappears on her way home from her book club. She is a well liked mom at her son's school, a great co-worker and loved and respected neighbour. Who could possibly want to hurt her? Why had she recently begun to see a therapist. Her husband, Greg goes out to look for her before calling the police, which shines a suspicious light on him. Time passes and there is no sign of her. The case goes cold as the police are called to new cases, but their suspicions continue to lead them to Greg. Is Jennifer still alive? Where is she? Does Greg know what happened to her?

This mystery, thriller grabbed me from the first page and didn't let go until the end. Most of the story is told from Greg's or the investigating officer's POV, but there are chapters told from Jennifer's POV as well. It lets the reader know that she is still alive and being held captive but with no inkling as to who has her or why. I do enjoy the missing person trope and this one kept me guessing. There are some family themes, issues surrounding grief, survivor's guilt and the harm keeping secrets can do. I enjoyed following the investigation as it revealed the background of the characters and some of their secrets. The final twist in this story had my jaw dropping. This was an enjoyable and entertaining mystery, crime thriller with enough twists to keep me riveted. I will say there were some slower parts, but the story never dragged for me. Jennifer Jill Araya narrated this audiobook and did a wonderful job. Although the main narrator was male, Ms. Araya made it work. She used her expression and tone to give a voice to the various characters and add emotion to the story. Listening to this story added to my enjoyment and I definitely recommend this mystery to those who enjoy them.

This book was one of the best books I have read this year, it was gripping and so beautifully written.

This book is about a woman named Rita who disappears on her way home from her book club. She is beautiful, very active in her son's school and the community, well-liked all around and a devoted wife and mother.

Her husband Greg gets home around 9pm from a pub where he went with his work buddies after finishing the day at the construction site, he knows Rita will be leaving her book club to come home at around 10/1030, but he wakes up in the middle of the night around 130 am and notices Rita isn't home yet, so he decides to check around the house. When he sees she is no where to be seen at home he decides to drive the route she takes to come home from book club and thinks maybe she had a flat tire or something went wrong on the way home, but he doesn't find her car or any sign of her. He eventually calls the police to report her missing.

The book then follows the police and detectives in their search for Rita, following her routines, getting in contact with people she knows and having search teams out looking for her.

They soon start to think it was Greg Rita's husband, but all evidence is circumstantial and they have nothing to charge him with that has weight against her disappearance.

The characters were real and likeable, this felt like a story that was realistic and authentic, like something you'd read in the news or see on tv.

This is my first Rick Mofina book and I must say it won't be my last either.

A fun, engaging mystery about what happened to Greg's wife, Jennifer Griffin. When Jennifer doesn't return home from book club, Greg knows something is wrong. But is he the one who's caused her to be missing? Twisty and compelling.

So boring and slow.

The main character is insufferable and whiny. The dialogue with the kid was too much. You expect this guy to be harboring some big awful secret. So many unnecessary pieces that weren’t explained in the end. Boring and nothing really ever happens

I don’t know why it took me so long to finally read a book by Rick Mofina, but wow, what an exciting mystery this was.
Jennifer Griffin vanishes without a trace one night as she’s heading home from a book club meeting. Her drive home is only a few miles, but she never makes it home. Her husband Greg is distraught, her eight year old son, Jake is devastated. So many people are searching for her, including the entire area’s police departments and very quickly the FBI is called in. The search gives up very few clues, but the FBI agents, Claire Kozak and Ned Carillo never give up. The few clues they uncover lead to several suspects, including Greg. There are some very good twists in here that kept my mind spinning as I tried to figure out who abducted Jennifer. After being missing for so long. the ending was a total surprise to me, a satisfying ending, but still, a shocker.

Unable to Put Down this Suspense-Filled and Dramatic Book

This story is so realistic that I expected to pick up a newspaper and see the latest report on Jenn’s disappearance. With a fast pace that never let up and dynamic characters, this was one of the best suspense thrillers that I have ever read. I really enjoyed the twists and surprises that kept me guessing as well as the way the neighborhood came together to support and help Greg and Jake. Compelling story of abuse, survival and never losing hope.
I checked out a copy of this book from my local library using the Libby App. I was not required to write a positive review, and all opinions expressed are my own.

This was so incredibly boring. A really overlong, self-indulgent mediation on how a family feels when someone goes missing. About a hundred characters wandered through, no one doing anything helpful. Even the dialogue was clunky and unnatural.

I assume the police methodology and victim reactions were realistic, considering the author. But again I remark: fiction and life are different. Reading the excruciating and tedious detail about all the stuff a family goes through is just boring. And yeah, I believe the husband would be in denial and the kid being a mess, but reading it ALL, over and over, is just exhausting.

I don’t need to know every single person involved in every single thing! Hypothetical example to avoid spoilers:
Joe Smith, Jen’s podiatrist, stood with John Long and Jane Jenkins, two teachers that worked with Jen, about to go out on the search. Al Bumpkins and Cathy Dunkin, two friends from her high school days, followed them. Then Enid Franken and Gia Hussein followed them, two women who enjoyed the same flavour of yogurt as Jen. Next to help in the search was Ingrid Jensen and Kitty Lim, two very different women from Jen’s book club. Ingrid favoured light colours, yoga, and was a vegetarian. Kitty always wore black, and consistently wanted the book club to read more classic literature rather than modern novels. After Ingrid and Kitty left to assist, Mo Nuram and Oppie Putnam, along with Queenie Ray and Steven Thomas, all from the retirement home, also joined the search. Those four were from the knitting group that Jen went to on Thursdays. Jen always laughed over the long scarves Queenie made every month, wondering who could possibly need scarves that long. And so many! Mo and Oppie were a gay couple, and had visited Jen several times at her workplace, as Mo had severe astigmatism.

We DON’T NEED TO KNOW. “Just about everyone Jen had ever met was eager to help, from her high school friends to her clients at work.” Hey wow, the same important information was given but without killing my soul.

Everyone sucked. The sister who doled out information like it was teeth. The husband who didn’t understand how anyone could ever suspect a husband in a crime against his wife. The lawyers who insisted the wife having bruises one time means the husband is 100% guilty despite no other evidence (one person seeing bruises one time is “incontrovertible evidence” that Jen was in an abusive marriage). The girlfriend who is terrified her lazy, shitty, addict boyfriend is cheating on her.

So many little details were dumb as well. If it wasn’t for the cell phones, I would think this book was written in 1950. The notion that a man would know how to do chores is just beyond. So many incompetents. So many basic reasoning issues. Like, if Jen went missing in X place, and evidence was found in Y place, HOW?!??! Well, we can do this thing called “move”. We also have things called “vehicles” which help us move far. Mind blowing.

It was kind of interesting to consider stuff one might not normally think of when someone goes missing. Like having to pay for a lawyer when you talk to the police, or having to pay for cleaning services from all the shit the police do (searching and dusting for prints in the house, for example). Having to buy new phones and computers since yours are taken indefinitely by the police. It never occurred to me how expensive it is to have crime done to you.

Anyway, I bareknuckled it through the first two thirds of the novel, but I couldn’t stand it anymore and just skimmed the last third.

The drinking game for this book is every time Greg can’t believe Jen is gone, either hallucinating she isn’t or just dwelling on how he can’t believe it. It’s a dangerous one, just don’t read too fast. That’s no stress, since every word is drudgery. I thought of making the game for every new character that was introduced yet utterly irrelevant but that’s too insane.

This book meticulously set up some solid suspects only to throw it all out in the race to the climax. The events became increasingly melodramatic in the final chapters. Here's a good suspect! Now let's kill him. Here's another good suspect. Just kidding, he's only a regular stalker for absolutely no reason that has nothing to do with her disappearance. And then let's kidnap the kid because I'm out of ideas. I found the few chapters with missing Jenn to be a distraction as well. The author did such a brilliant job setting up an incredible climax and then threw it all away for an unbelievable and disappointing ending.

I stumbled across this thriller on Hoopla.
The premise intrigued me. Set in upstate New York, a woman goes missing after attending her local book club. I loved that plot twist! Of course her husband is an immediate suspect. But there are a fair amount of characters in the book to keep track of. I think it’s nice to go in blind, so I’ll leave it there.

I feel like it’s a more realistic thriller. Think Criminal minds without the gore. It’s not graphic and I appreciated that. Not much in the way of language, also gets bonus points from me.

There are twists that kept me interested to see what would happen. I didn’t guess the ending. I’d recommend this one.

Jennifer and Greg were high school sweethearts and have an eight-year-old son, Jake. Jennifer works for an optical company and is quite involved in her community and Greg owns a struggling construction company. When Jennifer doesn't come home from her book club, Greg drives around looking for her. When he can't find her, he calls the police, who suspect that Greg had something to do with her disappearance because he really doesn't have an alibi. Was Jennifer murdered? She had been quiet and sad lately ... did she run away? As the police investigate, they discover that both Jennifer and Greg have secrets they are trying to keep.

I've read a few books by this author and liked this one. I liked the writing style and it is written in third personal perspective with the focus on wherever the action is. There was a lot going on with everyone having secrets that are hinted at and eventually revealed ... there were many who could have had to do with Jennifer's disappearance. The "whodunnit" was a bit convoluted but it came together in the end.

Her Last Goodbye by Rick Mofina
⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Synopsis:**
"Her Last Goodbye" by Rick Mofina is a captivating mystery novel that follows the disappearance of Jenn Griffin, leaving her husband Greg as the prime suspect. As detectives delve into the case, Greg's alibi becomes questionable, and the discovery of unexplained scrapes on his hands raises further suspicions.

This book is an engaging and suspenseful read that keeps the reader engrossed throughout the majority of the narrative. The author skillfully builds tension and maintains a sense of intrigue, effectively employing the "husband is always guilty" trope.

However, the conclusion of the novel falls short of providing a satisfying resolution. The ending feels somewhat abrupt and leaves certain aspects of the plot unresolved, leaving the reader with a sense of incompleteness.

Despite this, the book offers an enjoyable and thrilling reading experience for those who appreciate mystery thrillers. It is recommended to readers who enjoy the aforementioned trope.

Her Last Goodbye by Rick Mofina

3 / 5

Jennifer Griffin, a doting, well-liked suburban mom goes missing after her book club one night. She just doesn't make it home. Sounds intriguing and like a storyline I'd love.

Her husband Greg IS BEYOND-ANNOYING. lol I listened to the audiobook of this and I couldn't stand hearing his inner monologue out loud from the very first chapter. Very cringey.

Overall, the reveal wasn't very satisfying yet the story did keep me engaged, even if a bit drawn out and repetitive in spots. A solid 3 but I wouldn't be so fast to recommend this one to friends.
