The letters and numerals have never met before, and they're very curious about each other. Zero and the letter O hit it off. 3 and E can't stop looking at each other. However, the number one and the letter A both claim to be first. Letters can make words and stories, and numbers can count. But which are better?
Preschoolers and kindergarteners learn letter and number recognition in this funny story reminiscent of Chicka Chicka Boom Boom . Lois Barr's funny jokes and Stephanie Laberis's energetic illustrations are kid-pleasing fun.
Playful, delightful, and downright educational: That's what happens when numbers meet letters in this fabulous book by Lois Barr.
From the "Author" section on the back inside flap of the hardcover edition, you learn these facts about Ms. Barr:
* She holds a master's degree in Elementary Education. * For over 20 years, she has worked as a teacher. (Now, that's mega-important work!) * Plus, Lois has invented-and-patented a water-heated ice cream scoop.
Between that and reading this book, I am so IN LIKE with Lois Barr.
INTRODUCTIONS FROM THESE NUMBERS AND LETTERS ARE CLEVER
Undoubtedly they're also mind-sticky and, thus, useful for memorizing the various names and shapes and sounds and meanings. For instance, one of my favorite intros goes:
Who are we? We are Roman numerals.... You should know that recess is almost over."
Ha -- just as humorless and strict as any Roman monument!
Goodreaders, I'll bet you and your little readers will have fun with this book, just as I did.
FIVE STARS for clever pedagogue Lois Barr. Also FIVE STARS for Stephanie Laberis, creator of those sprightly illustrations. (These struck me as just colorful enough. No easy feat!)
A laugh out loud book about what happens when numbers and letters meet when the kids are out for recess.
I found this book to be immensely entertaining. I am doing research for my job at a library and while I am not sure the kiddos there will get it, this is one I will come back to in order to enjoy and laugh with the amazing puns and jokes that almost seem more aimed toward adults than kids! The illustrations are bold and the text allows for easy differentiation between the numbers, the letters, and the Roman numerals. Borrowed this from the library, but this will be one that will eventually end up on my personal bookshelf!
When numbers meet letters, there’s a LOT of misunderstanding going on - the letter A insists that she’s first, but of course, number one says she’s first, although sometimes zero comes before. The letter O cannot understand how zero thinks he’s nothing when clearly 0 is nice and round like zero. There are a lot of number and letter jokes.
Kids who are familiar with their alphabet and numbers may find this book funny.
What a fun way to discuss letters and numbers with kids. Numbers that look like letters confusing anyone you know? That’s such a common problem and it’s addressed with some comic relief on these pages. There is even a discussion about Roman numerals thrown in for good measure. A great book to share with early elementary schoolers.
Magnifique. The humor. Letters, Numbers, and a wonderful surprise close to the end, that was *chef's kiss*. It would be good for older elementary school children. And, I really enjoyed it.
There's not much counting, or ABC-ing, but it's a fun story. ☺️
