Mennonite homemaker Esther H. Shank has collected and perfected good recipes and food tips for 25 years. In this remarkable collection of more than 1,000 recipes and hundreds of hints for success, she shares her legacy of kitchen know-how. Like the Amish, a small section of the Mennonite community in the United States, these are hearty, farm-based recipes that trace their roots back to Germany, Switzerland, and central Europe.
I love the format of this book. The ingredients are listed on the left side in the order of use and the instructions are on the right. All of the ingredients for each step are grouped together by section.
This is one my absolute favorite cookbooks. It has easy, yummy, kid friendly recipes. It is one I got early on after I had my sons and it is in beat up shape from all the wear and tear. I always know if I need a quick meal or dessert, I can find something in there I have the ingredients for. This would be a great gift for a new bride!
This is probably the most used cookbook in our home. We've had it since the mid 1990's. We have yet to try any new recipe in this cookbook and not like it. Every one we've tried has been either good, great or fabulous.
Every year I pull this out during canning season to refresh my memory (or lack thereof!) on how long to water bath each vegetable. I learned how to butcher a chicken from this book. There's a Bavarian Apple tart recipe and a crescent roll recipe that are delicious!
