Wow! This book was so much more than I expected—action-packed, riveting, dazzling, twisty, and absolutely unputdownable!
Attention movie producers: this hidden gem begs to be adapted into an incredible action/thriller/drama movie or a binge-worthy limited series. It hooks you from the very first page, throwing whirlwind twists that keep you on edge, demanding your undivided attention, focus, and energy.
You’ll find yourself canceling your entire schedule, unplugging from the world, and locking yourself in a peaceful, distraction-free room armed with snacks and drinks (unless you want to stress-eat your own fingers!). Forget your responsibilities, dull binge-watching sessions, or late-night chores—this book needs to be savored without interruptions!
Quick summary of the story: Imagine stepping into Matt Pine’s shoes: a promising NYU filmmaking student whose brother, Danny, is in prison for murdering his girlfriend. Matt has a strained relationship with his father, who, along with Matt’s 17-year-old sister Maggie, spent their time and family resources trying to prove Danny’s innocence—a cause Matt doesn’t believe in.
One day, FBI agent Sarah Keller shows up on Matt’s campus with devastating news: his parents and two siblings were found dead during a family trip to Mexico, allegedly due to a gas leak. Now, Matt must travel to Mexico to identify their bodies and sign the necessary papers. But before he can leave, he must confront his brother Danny to deliver the heartbreaking news.
Matt is crushed, but the tragedy is just the beginning. That very night, while out for fresh air, a suspicious man with a scar and a baseball cap tries to push him into oncoming traffic. In Mexico, Matt quickly realizes he’s being followed, and Sarah Keller uncovers evidence suggesting foul play in his family’s deaths.
Could the murders be connected to Danny’s case? Did Matt’s father’s relentless pursuit of the real killer put the family in danger? And could Danny actually be innocent? Meanwhile, a Netflix documentary about Danny’s case reveals new evidence, adding another layer of intrigue to the mystery.
Matt must navigate a deadly game of cat and mouse to uncover the truth and bring justice to his family—without becoming the next victim.
Characters to love: Maggie, Matt’s brave and brilliant sister, is a standout—mature beyond her years and the glue holding their family together. Agent Sarah Keller is another favorite: a total badass with wit, charm, and grit (Charlize Theron would be perfect to play her in a movie!). Even minor characters like Matt’s friends Ganesh and Kala, and Reggie, a homeless chess player, are brilliantly written and memorable.
The writing is gripping and intense, and the story’s outcome is utterly satisfying. This book deserves every one of my shiny five stars!
