Lady Josephine, the duke's eldest daughter, has a secret. When her brother's horrid best friend discovers what she's been hiding up in the castle tower, she has no choice but to take him into her confidence.
As the daughter of a duke, Lady Josephine has a long list of responsibilities, and an even longer list of things she must never do to dishonor the family name. Josephine knows exactly which side becoming an author falls upon, but she's determined to try her hand at it anyway. For months she has worked on her novel in secret, writing chapter after chapter of intrigue and romance. Unfortunately for Josephine, her sworn enemy stumbles upon her secret.
Sir Andrew Wycomb's close relationship to the Duke of Montfort's family and heir gives him more than one advantage in life. His loyalty to the family is absolute, even if he finds at least one of its members an annoyance. He and Lady Josephine have never seen eye-to-eye. But when he discovers that she's written a novel upon a subject she knows nothing about, he cannot help but sympathize with her dream. This creates an unlikely ceasefire between them.
But things at the castle are always changing, and when a determined suitor arrives to court Josephine, Andrew has to decide which secrets he's going to keep. Especially when he discovers the one he's kept even from himself - that perhaps he doesn't find Josephine an annoyance at all. In fact, she is quite charming. The more time they spend together, the more he hopes she will realize they aren't enemies, and they could be so much more...
As the third stand-alone novel in this sereis by author Sally Britton, this story continues the Clairvoir Castle romances. This is a light-hearted, sweet romance series set during the Regency era in England.
The Series: Mr. Gardiner and the Governess A Companion for the Count
Sally Britton is sixth generation Texan, received her BA in English forever ago, and reads voraciously. She started her writing journey at the tender age of fourteen on an electric typewriter, and she’s never looked back.
Sally lives in Oklahoma with her husband, four children, and their overly energetic Australian Shepherds, cat, and snake named Nancy. She loves researching, hiking, and eating too much chocolate.
SIGH***** Oh man and that is why I love regency! A good author can take a simple love story and make every minute good:} This is a well written story between to people who don't see that their teasing over the years is actual flirtation! I love how they both slowly come to realize how they feel about each other! You get to be apart of every look and conversation! Nothing is skipped or glossed over, you don't need kidnappings or silly misunderstandings when you have an author that can write like this! Loved it! This is a sweet easy to read regency romance, with some history added. Much like Jane Austen. No violence or religious element.
Sally Britton has done it again! This is gentle, sweet romance is possibly my new favorite of the Clairvoir Castle series.
Andrew is a tease, a charming flirt and likes nothing better than to provoke his best friend's younger sister. Josie is often seemingly annoyed by Andrew and can't help but debate and argue with him on just about any topic. Once Andrew discovers her secret hobby, however, she has to trust him and their relationship slowly starts to turn.
This book is a combination of enemies to lovers and brother's best friend and comes complete with a secret castle tower, a rainstorm, and some of the best flirty banter I have ever read. Seriously. So much chemistry and tension!
I thoroughly enjoyed the inclusion of the some of the political turmoil between the socio-economic classes during this time period and hope she expounds on it in future books in the series.
Loved all the side characters plus some new ones introduced for whom we have been promised stories. Can't wait to read them all! 5 stars and highly recommend!
I received a complimentary copy of the book but a positive review was not required.
I love books with flirty witty banter and Sally Britton really delivers in Sir Andrew and the Authoress! It also has some of my favorite tropes: enemies to lovers, childhood friends to lovers, and forbidden romance with the brother’s best friend all wrapped into one. The characters are so fun and engaging, even the side characters. There’s a hint of danger with the historical uprisings of the time included in the background. It’s a sweet, slow burn romance to escape in as these clever combatants match wits and discover it’s more fun to verbally spar and make up than just spar.
Sir Andrew Wycomb is like part of the family. When his parents died, Andrew was immediately embraced by his best friend’s family and treated like a son. He’s teased and bantered with Josephine since she was little. In the last few years though, he’s noticed she’s blossomed into a beautiful woman. Troubled by his growing attraction, he tries to suppress his feelings by constantly telling himself that she’s his best friend’s sister. However when he discovers her secret and another suitor appears on the scene, he begins to question if he could let her go.
Lady Josephine Montfort or Josie at first sees Andrew as an annoying older brother. She enjoys their verbal battles and looks forward to his company. However when all her confidents are unavailable and her hidden sanctuary where she secretly writes is discovered by Andrew, she decides to trust him with her secrets. She suddenly finds herself noticing the handsome Sir Andrew and thinking of him in more romantic terms.
I loved the friendly teasing, witty banter between Andrew and Josie. Their closeness during a rainstorm, him catching her in the hallway at night, those secluded moments in the castle tower, and of course the fountain pens were some of my favorite scenes. I loved Josie’s grandmother, the dowager duchess and the other Montfort siblings. I even liked Roman Eastwood and his brother. I’m excited to see what happens next in this series! All in all, a lovely swoony romance to lose yourself in. Though it’s the third book in the series, it can definitely be read as a standalone. Highly recommend to sweet regency romance fans. I received an advance copy from the author. All opinions are my own and I was not required to leave a positive review.
While this is my first book by Sally, it will not be my last.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story! It was a quick and light regency romance that had me smiling from ear to ear.
I ADORED the banter between Andrew & Josephine! Every time they were together fireworks were going off like CRAZY, and I was eating it up with a spoon!
While I never really completely understood Josephine’s annoyance with Andrew, I’m not complaining about it because we got some adorable moments between the two of them! 💥😍
The romance was so noticeable to everyone around, especially the reader, but I would still consider it a slow burn since it went from “irritation to love”. And I loved every minute of it! 👏👏
ALL of the characters were great! I loved the tight knit family. It was beautifully done and felt authentic!!
I wish Josephine’s “author” journey would’ve been talked about a little more. Since it wasn’t really an acceptable thing to pursue back then I did enjoy the bits we got. I wish we would’ve gotten Andrew’s “thoughts” about it.
Overall it was an adorable read! And I’m anxious to get the other books in the series (and watch for the ones coming after this) I rated it 4/5 stars *I received this book from the author**All opinions are my own*
We've seen Lady Josephine (Josie) in the previous book and I found her a little off-putting, but now I know why!! She has a big secret--she writes! Ladies did not write books at this time in history, so Josephine has to guard her secret especially from her grandmother, the dowager duchess.
Andrew is almost like a member of the Duke of Montfort's family and he and Josie always bumped heads so she isn't really thrilled to have him visiting. When he discovers her secret place and what she does there, she's afraid he'll tell someone her secrets.
I'm a big fan of enemies to lovers and this is that and much more. Since Andrew is Josephine's brother's best friend, there's a battle within Andrew when he finds himself attracted to her. I loved the witty banter and the chemistry between the main characters is fantastic! This is my favorite in the Clairvoir Castle series--I just loved Andrew and Josephine.
This is part of a series but can be read as a standalone. I listened to the audiobook and really liked the narrator who also narrated the other books in the series.
My favorite thing in books is dialogue and this one had such great dialogue.
Andrew and Josie have been debating each other for years. Andrew is best friends with Josie’s older brother and is treated as a son by their parents. He’s always around and always ready to spar with her. I loved their banter.
When Andrew discovers her secret room and her secret hobby of writing, they grow closer. Then when Josie’s brother invites a suitor to their castle for Josie, Andrew’s jealousy spurs him into action.
I loved the energy of the couple. I loved the gentle escape from the world in this sweet and slow romance. This series has been different from Sally’s other books, and while I’ve loved them all, I appreciate these slow sweet romances without too much conflict. As always, Sally delivered on some history too, incorporating some interesting political problems of the time.
Loved this one. Now to go back and re-read my favorite banter scenes. I love these two together!
The delightful (book #3 in the Clairvor Castle series)! I had planned to hold off on continuing this series because I'm such a seasonal, mood reader and this one happens in Spring. However, I was in need of a light story yesterday as I went about some cleaning and cooking.
The author has shared that she wrote this series in the midst of "Spring 2020" and wanted to write something easier on the mind and heart to be an escape.
I'm so thankful for that because that's what I want every day --- clean, escapism stories that are charming and easy on the heart and mind. YES, PLEASE!
The family within Clairvoir Castle reminds me of Kristi Ann Hunter's 'Hawthorne House' series of wealthy Regency-era siblings. This series of books are novellas, clean but without faith content, and each one happens in a sequential season.
I enjoyed the intense enemies-to-more AND brother's best friend trope for the eldest daughter. So charming and uplifting. I've adored every book in the series so far.
I found the e-book on Kindle Unlimited & the audiobook on Everand. Woohoo!
Stay tuned for a more in-depth monthly book review and whether I recommend it as a truly CLEAN READ worth your time on my Cozy Bookish YouTube channel. 💙☕📚
I really REALLY liked Andrew and his mischievious humour but sadly, Josephine remained quite unlikable to me. I wasn't fond of her in Emma's book but hoped that gaining her own perspective would grant me a better insight into her character - alas, my perception of her stayed the same; a selfish and privileged young woman who is trying to be intersting by writing a book and performing a woe is me whenever someone points out just how much of a sheltered (and spoiled) life she leads... Maybe I am a bit too harsh but eh... I really really couldn't connect to her. Which spoiled both the romance and any semblance of interest I had during the first half of the story.
Ngl Andrew's teasing and banter skills are top notch and wasted on Josephine 🤷🏻♀️
4★'s A light romance with all the right banter! I loved this book so much, I finished it in one sitting!! My only complaint is that it's way too short—I need more of Andrew and Josephine! They're my favorite couple, and their banter had me smiling the whole time. 😭💖
If you’re looking for a quick, light historical romance to dive into, I highly recommend this one!
I just loved this one so much! Sir Andrew and Lady Josephine are such a sweet couple. They've known each other for years and acted more like brother and sister for a while. Especially with Andrew being such a tease. When they are at an extended stay at the castle, they just might find themselves being in each other's company more and more. I loved it!
Their budding friendship was just so sweet to watch (er, um, read/listen to). They come to realize that each other is a good confidant and that Andrew possibly has a bit more serious side to himself than Josephine first thought. Andrew discovers some of Josephine's secrets and future desires as well. I loved seeing the progression from friends to realizing there might be greater feelings for each other.
The fun banter and interactions with all of the family members was great. I loved seeing those dynamics. The overall feeling I had of this book was that it was just a sweet and gentle story between great characters. I loved their development and their struggles and their overcoming those struggles and realizing that sometimes what you are looking for is right in front of you.
I've loved the books I've read so far in this series but this one might just be my favorite.
I listened to the audiobook and loved how the narrator brought this story and these characters to life. I really enjoy listening to her as a narrator.
Content: Clean.
I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
When I knew I’d be getting a copy of this book you better believe I cleared my reading schedule! That’s what you do for a Sally Britton book!
Sally’s books are like a cozy blanket. She finds the perfect blend of characters, settings, dialogue and banter all resulting in the ultimate comfort read!!
Sir Andrew and the Authoress is MY FAVORITE in this series! Andrew and Josie are SO much fun! It’s a brother’s best friend, enemies to more, childhood friends trope all rolled into one. The back-and-forth tension in this book is some of Sally’s best writing!! Ahhh it’s just so good!
Sir Andrew and the Authoress is out TODAY!! Grab it from the link in my stories!! It can be read as a stand alone, but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every single book in this series!
Thanks to the Author for the copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.
I usually like Sally Britton books. I look forward to them. I looked forward to this one. But….it felt like Josephine was different than in the other two books. And not in the best ways. And Andrew just…irritated me from the first few pages. I don’t find constantly provoking people because it amuses you to be funny. I find it irksome. So. Eh. My favorite moments involved the dowager duchess. Would love to read a book about her youth! Or even her in middle age.
This book was an absolute delight. My friends know that I love all of Sally’s books, but this one might be my new favorite of hers!! Sir Andrew was so much fun and he and Lady Josephine’s banter got me laughing out loud on several occasions. :) I usually enjoy romances where our main couple meets on page more than ones where they have known each other a long time, but Andrew and Josephine’s relationship and understanding of each other was a perfect “slow-burn” and I loved seeing them evolve. Loved it!! A perfect pick for when you’re in the mood for a light-hearted romance.
Despite the good writing, well developed world and realistic settings I just didn't get engaged in this story. For me it could have been a great short story - the development of friends to lovers and growth of self awareness was too slow. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants a YA story about two bickering friends who find they actually like each other.
Sally Britton bores me to tears, yet somehow I keep wanting to know what happens to these characters. The best thing about this series are the covers. I actually started taking a drink at every mention of “eyebrows “. The editor should be fired. It’s so slow. The most interesting characters are Honey the horse and the two hounds, Apollo and Athena. I think I’m still reading for the castle. It’s hard to resist a castle.
That said, I did pay for it and read it so I’m entitled to review it. This gets 2 1/2 stars. Two stars because I finished it, and half a star because I actually want to read Simon’s story, though I may not subject myself when the time comes. The history is interesting. Andrew is admirable but not exciting. Josephine is completely unlikeable. I cannot comprehend why he is attracted to such a spoiled, willful girl who is much too old to leave the house without a maid or hide in a secret room while her security searches for her. I wanted to slap her. She’s the daughter of a Duke who acts like a 15 year old chambermaid, sneaking out and hiding to avoid work. Nothing about her made me sympathetic towards her. Meeting the new vicar in the village without a female chaperone would have resulted in enough gossip to force him to leave his position. The idea that she must keep her writing a secret from her family, even though she sought to have it published, is nonsensical. She finally gives her manuscript to Andrew to read, but we are left in suspense of the outcome. Pretty stupid cliffhanger. This is the only SB series I still read, but each book is worse than the one before, sadly. But kudos to the cover artist. Well done! You deserve a better author to paint for.
It was about time that I returned to Clairvoir Castle! After finishing the story with Luca and Emma, I couldn't wait to get back and read Josephine's story! And this cover is just gorgeous!!!
Sir Andrew is the brother's best friend and honorary member to the Dinard family. And he is absolutely delightful. I knew of the witty, charm he possessed in the last books, but I LOVED him in this story. Banter, banter and more banter. And the sweet chemistry with him and Josephine is just delightful. A little enemies and friends to lovers feel that I love.
I think my favorite parts were the overall vulnerability the characters felt. Josephine and her writing, Sir Andrew and his rank. The need for a quiet space, away from watching eyes and society expectations. I could see myself that way if I were in their shoes.
I think the only things I would have liked more of would be the author piece and expand on the overall history with the rising tensions between social ranks. I felt that was a plot theme in the beginning and I didn't see much of it toward the end.
Otherwise, lovely sweet swoony romance. I was all for it from the beginning. One of Sally's best couples.
Thank you Sally for the eARC! So excited for Lord Farleigh!
Such a beautiful addition to the series! It took me a bit to get into the flow of the story and I had to search for some historical background, but I was soon invested in the story and ended up loving it maybe even more than the first and second book in the series. 4,5 stars.
The third book in Sally Britton's Ladies of Castle Clairvoir, series Sir Andrew and the Authoress is a sweet and adorable romance! Sally is one of my favorite authors and this series has been such an enjoyable series to read. It is an overall gentle and sweet story and each of the books have been 5 star reads for me! Lady Josephine has many responsibilities and expectations as the daughter of a duke. However, one of her dreams is to be an author. As she secretly writes her novel, her secret is discovered by her sworn enemy. Sir Andrew Wycomb is practically part of the family and is absolutely loyal to them. While he and Josephine have never seen eye-to-eye, he is sympathetic to her dream. But as things at the castle change and a suitor comes to court Josephine, Andrew is forced to discover which secrets he will hold onto. Including the ones he is holding from himself about his feelings for Josephine and hopes for the future. Like I said, this was really sweet and enjoyable. I sometimes struggle with the enemies-to-lovers trope because it can feel a bit mean-spirited or spiteful instead of fun in terms of banter. So I appreciate that though Josie and Andrew bickered and argued, it was never mean-spirited, nor was it spiteful. Josie felt a bit more off-kilter, but she knew Andrew wasn’t trying to hurt her feelings or attack her. She felt a bit isolated because of her position and life stage. It left her struggling to figure out her place and Andrew really supported her. They were really able to relax around one another. I liked how aware Josie was of her position. I felt like it was very realistic in terms of her efforts to represent her family well, the privilege she had as a duke’s daughter, and the uncertainty she felt as her closest friend was now married and had her own separate life. She was an easy character to relate to and empathize with. Andrew was also very sweet and I appreciate how caring he was for their family. His banter with Josie was fun too. It was sweet to see their relationship grow, and I appreciate that there was no drawn out dramatic love triangle. Overall, while I think the second book of the series was my favorite, this was a really sweet and enjoyable book that I would definitely recommend. While it may not be necessary to read the other books in the series, I think it enhances the story and creates more of a connection with the characters. It is always fun to see characters throughout a series. This is a clean historical fiction romance that is sweet and lighthearted.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion, I was not required to write a positive review.
This was such a sweet story of enemies to lovers/friends to lovers/brother’s best friend/love triangle story. Sir Andrew is besties with Simon and loves to tease Simon’s sister Josephine. ✍️ Josephine wants to be an authoress but getting a rejection hurts. She knows she’s been blessed in her circumstances and she’s aware of the unfairness of society. What is also unfair is Simon pushing gentleman to her hoping she’ll be interested in them. ✍️ I loved all the times Andrew and Josie were together and the one horse scene 😍 This is a sweet story and I can’t wait for the next book. Simon needs to meet his match! ✍️ This can be read as a stand alone. I received an audio copy from the author and the narrator was perfect! These are my own thoughts and opinions.
I’d been so looking forward to this one and it DID NOT disappoint. I love Andrew and Josephine. I didn’t want it to end!! 🫠🫠🫠🫠 it felt like Emma & Knightley
First off, I need to mention how refreshing it is for a book to not have a major conflict 70 percent in. I always get anxious once I hit that point because I’m waiting for something bad to happen. I didn’t get that with this one. Oh goodness!! This book was an absolute delight! I LOVED it! Andrew and Josephine were the sweetest couple. Their banter, teasing, and tension was amazing. The pace was great and their story sucked me in from the beginning. I’m a huge fan of enemies to lovers and this one hit its mark. Sooo good!
I really enjoyed this book by Sally Britton. I have enjoyed the other books in this series so I expected to enjoy this one and it did not disappoint. I loved the banter between Andrew and Josephine. I loved how they loved to get under each others skin and I loved how other people knew before they knew, that the teasing was because they liked each other as more then friends. I’m looking forward to reading other books in this series and getting to know more of the characters.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
3.5 stars rounded up. It was difficult for me to like the main characters. I saw no wit or intelligence in their bickering, just pettiness and childishness. Andrew does a lot of chuckling, smirking, and grinning, which makes him seem rather shallow. He has no responsibilities other than keeping an eye out for trouble, as the duke requested. Josephine does a lot of whining about her writing and about Andrew. Neither of them is very appealing. Distracting errors throughout.
The first book in this series, Mr. Gardiner and the Governess, was delightful.
Sir Andrew and the Authoress was a delightful friends to more romance. It was a lovely book and I fell in love with these characters. There was the tiniest bit of political intrigue in the story but overall it was a story of two people learning to see what was right in front of them.
Sweet story with likable characters. Felt a little like filler for the series. I think I would have enjoyed it more if it had somewhat shorter and less words had been spent on frequent internalized analysis of feelings.
This was so good! I absolutely love this series. The characters are all wonderful and you feel so happy as you read through each book. You know for a fact that your main characters are going to get a happily ever after and you know it’ll be a satisfying journey!
Sir Andrew and the Authoress has been one of my most anticipated reads this year and it lived up to my hype for it! I LOVED the interactions between Andrew and Josie in the last book and couldn’t wait to see their continuing banter… and the realization that they both were falling in love with each other.
Our main characters shared so many sweet moments together. And the gradual revealing of their true feelings was great. I love when characters have been friends for years and then suddenly something shifts… it hits them and BAM!
I LOVED when Andrew brings Josie to his home and observes her there and immediately knew that she was 100% the one and that he would peruse a relationship. I was shocked and so excited that he came right out with it after he gave her the pen!!! Definitely one of my favorite scenes! They made such a great couple.
I think some of my favorite parts of the book were with the Dowager Duchess and all of her hidden remarks and meanings! She was completely for this relationship and could read both Andrew and Josie perfectly. She was awesome.
This story was an absolute win for me! And I’m looking forward even more to future stories and series in the making connected to this world!
(STERLING!!!! YES PLEASE.)
I received an advanced copy of this book. I was not required to give a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own
I was waiting for Andrew and Josie's story since the last book in this series came out so I really hiped this one up and I'm glad to say I was not disappointed.
Sir Andrew and Lady Josephine have a slow burn bickering kinda friends/enemies/nearly siblings to lovers relationship. The way there realtionship changes to trust to confidants and to more is amazingly written. (Especially the banter...)
As always there are many well formed Side Characters here (some out of past books, some who'll hopefully get their own books soon...).
Its really a feel good book, it doesn't even have a major conflict... (though I kinda kept thinking it would) ---- which I realize is the point of this series.... ;)
The only things I could complain about would be, what happend to Andrews complexes about his being a lower rank and not being able to offer Josephine enough? & What about the book? (Both kinda loose ends I think...)
Looking forward to Simon's book :) but mostly to the guard's ....
Main Characters: Clear Backgroundstory, Locigal Actions Side Charactes: Funny, Adorable, Clear Backgroundstory, Reoccuring Writing Style: Very good Content: Clean, just kissing Violence: No Would recommend: Yes, absolutely but read the prequels first.
I got a advanced free copy in exchange for a review... :)
Sir Andrew and the Authoress by Sally Britton- I was given an eARC prior to publication for an honest review. This was my first book by Sally Britton and after hearing so many good things, I am absolutely thrilled that it did not disappoint. Britton's writing is full of wit and charm, and is so entertaining to read. For being the third book in a series I was not at all confused, so it works perfectly as a standalone, however seeing couples that got together in previous books only encouraged me to go back and catch up with the series! Josephine was such an amazing heroine, and I loved her passion for writing and how she learned so much about herself along with falling in love. Andrew was a wonderful hero as well and I loved his good-hearted nature and respect for Josie. The chemistry between the two was incredible! Get ready for the best witty banter and friendship when reading this book. They reminded me very much of Emma and Knightley from Jane Austen's Emma in the best way with their 'frenemies' type of relationship. I highly recommend Sir Andrew and the Authoress for a fast paced and fun Regency romance.
This lovely, light hearted historical romance with two childhood enemies finding love was just what I needed! Josephine and Andrew have constantly been at each other since the time they were small. Andrew always knew the right buttons to push. Whether this was calling Josephine by her informal name of Josie, or teasing her, she avoided him as much as possible. Andrew had his work cut out for him as he had to prove that now he was older he had changed and that he loved her.
The part of the book that I treasured was when Andrew finds Josie’s secret writing spot. He doesn’t scoff at her idea of wanting be an authoress, but instead supports her in many sweet and thoughtful ways. How could she not help but care for him after all he has does for her?
The historical aspect was well written, showing the political discontent that served as the catalyst for the family going to their country estate of Clairvoir Castle. Ms. Britton’s descriptions of both Josie’s family castle and Andrew’s smaller castle made me feel like I was there with them. It would have been fun to explore both castles and grounds as a guest.
I recommend reading this book if you or a friend enjoy clean and wholesome romance stories. I was given a copy of this book with no obligation to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.
