"In true Susan Mallery fashion, strong female characters, friendship, and family are at the center of THE VINEYARD AT PAINTED MOON. You're sure to laugh and cry along the journey and delight in the happy ending."—Robyn Carr, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Virgin River
“The Vineyard at Painted Moon feels like a story about courage—about making hard choices so that you can live an authentic life.”—Katherine Center, New York Times bestselling author of What You Wish For
Step into the vineyard with Susan Mallery’s most irresistible novel yet, as one woman searches for the perfect blend of love, family and wine.
Mackenzie Dienes seems to have it all—a beautiful home, close friends and a successful career as an elite winemaker with the family winery. There’s just one problem—it’s not her family, it’s her husband’s. In fact, everything in her life is tied to him—his mother is the closest thing to a mom that she’s ever had, their home is on the family compound, his sister is her best friend. So when she and her husband admit their marriage is over, her pain goes beyond heartbreak. She’s on the brink of losing everything. Her job, her home, her friends and, worst of all, her family.
Staying is an option. She can continue to work at the winery, be friends with her mother-in-law, hug her nieces and nephews—but as an employee, nothing more. Or she can surrender every piece of her heart in order to build a legacy of her own. If she can dare to let go of the life she thought she wanted, she might discover something even more beautiful waiting for her beneath a painted moon.

Mackenzie Dienes is a renowned winemaker for her husband Rhys Barcellona’s family vineyard. She met him 16 years ago when she accompanied his sister (her college roommate) home for the holidays. She fell in love not only with him but his entire family, which ultimately became the one she didn’t have but always wanted. While Bel Après belongs to the Barcellona family, led by matriarch Barbara, Mackenzie is the winemaker, managing the grapes from the moment they are picked until the wine is bottled. She’s content with her life even though her marriage is more like a union of best friends. But when Rhys suddenly asks for a divorce, Mackenzie has to confront the realities of her situation...home, career, marriage and family.
It’s made abundantly clear at the onset of the story that Mackenzie is the most favored by mother-in-law Barbara over all of her own children. That tells you a lot more about Barbara than Mackenzie, which is the heart of everything. Stephanie, her sister-in-law and former college roommate, is Mackenzie’s best friend but relationships can change when blood lines are involved. And, because Barbara always made it clear that since Mackenzie wasn’t truly a Barcellona, the business had to stay in the “family” and she wasn’t entitled to any ownership stake. As she attempts to navigate her way through all of it, Barbara sets the tone and boundaries, forcing Mackenzie to examine her own heart, talents and vision for her future.
Despite Barbara’s overly dramatic bad behavior, this was a realistic view of how relationships can change overnight when an in-law’s marital status changes, despite years of great shared experiences. Mackenzie’s contentment delayed her taking a critical view of her personal circumstances, settling for an unsatisfying marriage and far less than what she was entitled to in her career. I loved seeing her descend into chaos and emerge with a clearer sense of self, confidence and hope for the future. Even though her love for Bel Après was deep and boundless, she didn’t let it hold her back in facing her new truths. I listened to the story and very much enjoyed narrator Tanya Eby’s performance. She expertly provided character distinctions and is a great storyteller. I loved the honesty of the story and its strong themes and messages. This was a win for me. 4.5 stars
I'm not usually a chick lit person but occasionally I do need a "hit". Well, I had my best fix in a long time via "The Vineyard at Painted Moon". Susan Mallery did everything right! She had some great characters, an interesting plot (and subplots) that remained hot like lava throughout most of the story leading to a page turner for me. Those who love this genre will most certainly be fans, too.
While not a wholly original story, Ms. Mallery manages to keep the reader intrigued. MacKenzie is an orphan, who looses her grandfather just before college. Her dorm mate is Stephanie and they become fast friends. The story begins at the summer party of the vineyard where MacKenzie holds a key position in the family business and is also married to Stephanie's brother, Rhys, one of the children, who will inherit the vineyard, when his mother, Barbara, the matriarch passes. They've been married for sixteen years and his family is her family. However, this isn't a fantasy (well it sort of is), and alas, there is trouble in MacKenzie's little paradise. Shortly, following the event of the season, Rhys asks for a divorce. Quickly following this fissure, MacKenzie realizes that she isn't actually an honoree family member in everyone's eyes.
MacKenzie takes some brave steps at age 37, discovering that she is much stronger than she imagined and when life continues to send one curveball after another, she swings back hard. Harder than anyone expected, becoming this reader's heroine. I loved the story arc and the subplots were equally interesting.
Mallery captures the behind the scenes of a family business. I have witnessed it first hand and I'm definitely certain that she has as well. This is an excellent taste of Mallery's skillset. Oh, for those who don't know the basics of wine (moi), she even has a mini-crash course in the back and within the story's pages.
This would make for an excellent bookclub read, especially for those wanting to share the story with friends and dinner with wine, perhaps? Check out some bookclub questions in the back to encourage the course for discussion.
Thank you to Goodreads, publisher and the author for an ARC of this story in exchange for my honest opinion.
THE VINEYARD AT PAINTED MOON by Susan Mallery is a women’s fiction novel that pulled me in from page one. This is the perfect emotionally intense and ultimately satisfying read to curl up with on your couch wrapped in a comfy blanket with a glass of your favorite wine by your side on these snowy cold days. I read it entirely in one sitting.
Mackenzie Dienes is a successful elite winemaker at her husband’s family vineyard in Walla Walla since graduating from college where she was his sister’s roommate. Having lost her grandfather to cancer after graduating from high school, she has been happily enveloped by her husband’s family and vineyard for sixteen years, but now he wants a divorce.
Mackenzie’s life is thrown into turmoil. She realizes the life she has lived has all belonged to her husband and his family and as much as she longed to be considered a member of the family, she was in many ways just an employee to certain members of the family.
Mackenzie can stay and continue working at the winery or she can risk everything to claim a new future she has only ever dreamed of.
I loved this book from start to finish! Not only did I go through the range of emotions a women’s fiction novel usually takes me through, but I got a HEA, too. Mackenzie is an endearing protagonist. It was so satisfying to see her go from just living to emotionally thriving not only in her personal life, but in her professional one as well. Ms. Mallery made me feel as though I was at the vineyard and walking right along with Mackenzie with her vivid descriptions throughout the story. The secondary characters come to life on the page; some supportive and some surprising, good and bad. I hated to see them go, but was happy with the epilogue.
Good but the ending seemed abrupt. While the ending reveals where the characters are, it leaves a transitional gap that made me feel unsatisfied. The "villain" doesn't change even through plenty opportunity; The HEA just popped up without much warning, leaving the reader to imagine what transpired between them that made them fall in love. Perhaps the focus on too many characters resulted in less interaction between the two main characters. Would have liked to read more about them . Also would have like the villain to have learned from her mistakes. As much time as was spent on her despicable character, it would have been nice to see her change her ways. Just saying......
A disfunctional family in Walla Walla, Washington. The family matriarch, Barbara, is hateful and unlikeable in this book and her beloved family winery fails after her son and DIL's marriage fails.
Too much drama for my taste, but the main lesson learned is: kindness, ambition and hard work pay off. Even the winemaking topic was nothing new to those of us who love wine! It's all well-known information. Blah, blah.
The love interest and the ending is oh-so predictable from early in the book. Therefore, I could not give this novel more than 2 stars. This easy, but shallow book took two days to read; it didn't hold my interest and there were zero deep thoughts involved in the story. Disappointing IMO.
Nothing special; I read it and will forget it within a few days.
Let me start by saying if you like family drama then you are going to love this book. It is full of family drama. I loved Mackenzie and Bruno oh least I not forget Stephanie too. But I had such a distaste for Barbara. I hated to see her name on the page. I was in awe of all the vineyards and the wine all sounded so good. Mallery out did her self on this one. You are in for a surprise and I was so happy how it all ended. 4 stars and I can't wait for Mallery's next book.
I can't remember when was the last time I read a book where I didn't like one single character??!!
and this is a character-driven story and I just can't..they all are just so...
there is one sister that is nice and kind but it is caricature writing that just pissed me off, she is a free spirit, artist, unconventional parenting, yoga, profound advice.. and I can't remember if it was said or implied she can be that way because she has a trust fund so she doesn't need career and her husband/partner can "only be mechanic"..
the matriarch of the family is just a horrible person.. her inner monologue about her children is disgusting the way she is judging them and shames them.. I couldn't take it..she hopes her daughter in law miscarry and fat shames and belittles her children constantly..
I didn't get any growth in characters maybe there is one daughter that decides to not get back with her ex-husband and quit the family vineyard.. when you don't struggle financially it is easy to turn your life around and find any other job with your friend vinery mind you..
and then we have the main female character... very predictable storyline and don't get me started how I hate when the person who can't have kids( the guy she ends up with) gets in a relationship with a pregnant character... before she divorced she got pregnant with her ex-husband..talk about instant family how wonderful.. and the whole poor me attitude..these characters are grown-ass people ugh like how can they live and work together and not talk about important things like the fact they didn't sleep together for five years..her whole set up with her ex-husband was so stupid.. her whole goody too shoe attitude comes off as idiotic..
reading is very subjective it and I am an emotional reader and reviewer that is why I rate it like this..I just didn't gain anything from this story..
I need to go and listen to some Gente de Zona music to bring joy to my life that this book sucked right out..
This made me cry, smile, and laugh. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This story sure was a treat. A wonderful change of pace, just nice to sit down and relax type of book.
We all know things change quickly in life and the author has crafted a story that reflects on how unexpected changes can actually turn out wonderful as long as you look forward and not behind.
With a setting in Napa on a glorious vineyard estate, it’s not hard to get caught up in the essence of the vineyard, the smell of the wine and grapes, and the level of passion it takes to be a creative in this environment. Mallery brings it all to us with her wonderfully descriptive imagery. Take me away!
The author shows us how finding your passion and trusting in yourself to keep moving forward can bring satisfying change and happiness. Yes, it’s easy to get caught up in sadness and despair but everyone has their niche to explore and succeed.
With wonderful characters, including a few you will love to hate, this story is a wonderful family saga that leaves you with some tears flowing and smiles growing. You get a full range of emotion in this classic story.
Definitely one to put on your to read list. Thoroughly engaging and an author to follow! Well Done!
This charming character driven story is about resourceful, strong women with drive and courage. It has fascinating family dynamics, endings and new beginnings, friendship + found love. There’s marriage troubles, and a surprise involving an ex-husband that brings about challenges. And a selfish mother/ex-mother-in-law who is the matriarch of the family (and the winery’s owner) who makes everyone’s life miserable. I adored the beautiful vineyard setting along with interesting tidbits about winemaking. And as with all Susan Mallory novels, this ends with a happily ever after! ❥ 4 stars — Pub. 2/9/21
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. They say change is inevitable and we can either choose to resist it or embrace it. When one embraces change, it provides one with an opportunity for growth, something the heroine from The Vineyard at Painted Moon will discover. Not only did the change open new doors for her, it led to her discovering that the persons who she believed had her back only saw her as a means to an end.
To persons on the outside, Mackenzie Dienes appears to have an awesome life. A beautiful home, close friends, a handsome husband and dream job as a well sought after winemaker. There is just one problem: she earned the above through her marriage. So when she realized that her marriage had ended, she knew she would lose it all, a loss she had not been prepared for.
I had a great time with this book. My first time experiencing the author’s work and I would read more of her work.
Mackenzie’s resilience shined throughout the story. She embraced the change, albeit in fear, and ended up achieving much more than she had lost. I admired her strength, her intelligence and her caring nature.
The story featured likeable as well unlikeable characters. The two I found most detestable were Rhys, Mackenzie’s soon to be ex husband and her mother-in-law, Barbara. Rhys’ actions surprised me. Initially, he appeared to be on Mackenzie’s side despite the end of their marriage. However, as the story progressed, his weak and selfish nature reared its head. Then there was his mother. OMG! The woman was controlling, malicious, belligerent and downright vicious. She scared me. Thank goodness for the characters who brought light to Mackenzie’s life.
The Vineyard at Painted Moon with its excellent character development, superb pacing and wonderful world building proved an engaging read from start to finish.
This is a family drama set in the wine country of Walla Walla, Washington. Mackenzie Dienes married into a family with a vineyard and has become a very talented winemaker. She has a great life doing what she loves - mostly. Then she and her husband decide their marriage isn't working and they decide to divorce. Mackenzie has some very difficult choices to make. She could stay on as an employee or go out on her own, or find another job. If she left, she could lose everything. Her entire life is wrapped up in the winery and the family - her mother-in-law is the closest thing to a mother she's ever had, her best friend is her husband's sister, she loves being a winemaker and has built quite a reputation. What should she do?
Susan Mallery is a talented novelist and I've enjoyed many of her books, this one included. The characters are well developed and complex. The plot was both compelling and absorbing. I enjoyed my time with this story.
Thanks to HARLEQUIN – Trade Publishing (U.S. & Canada) through Netgalley for an advance copy.
First off..... I LOVED this book! It has been quite awhile since I read a book that was able to make me laugh, cry, gasp, smile and be frustrated. And to actually hate a character! I can't remember a book where I hated a character as much as I did Barbara! Such incredible writing by Susan Mallery to provide all that in one book!
There is so much in this story that would be great to discuss with others. I can see it relating to similar life experiences for some. And providing a few life lessons or at least a "make you think" situation for others.
I was so sorry when this book came to an end! I wanted to continue to read about Mckenzie's life, to see what next happy moment was to come. Or how she dealt with the next obstacle. I really hope that Susan Mallery continues this in a second book!
I would recommend this book to anyone. I can't wait to see what Susan Mallery writes next! Thanks to NetGalley and HQN Books for giving me the opportunity to read this one.
The Vineyard at Painted Moon by Susan Mallery is a contemporary women’s fiction novel with a bit of romance . This one has the beautiful setting of a vineyard in Walla Walla, Washington and touches on just what makes family and friendship.
Mackenzie Dienes has a large, loving and wonderful family and a wonderful job as a winemaker at the family vineyard. However, the family is that of her husband and the vineyard is owned by his mother and now Mackenzie’s husband wants a divorce as their marriage has not been working for a while.
Mackenzie isn’t sure what she should do, she loves her job and her husband’s sisters are her best friends but her mother in law does not take the news of the divorce well at all. As much as Mackenzie loves the job she’s been doing all these years while married she wants to think that she deserves more in her life than just becoming a paid employee in what she’s helped build.
Mackenzie was a character who was easy to get behind and want to root for quickly in this story. I found myself really engaged in her story and enjoying watching it all unfold as I continued to read. The other characters were also well developed and while not all were likable that seemed to be the intended nature and it made the story all that more entertaining as the drama unfolded and I enjoyed the way everything wrapped up in the end.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.
Another great story by this author! I love that Ms Mallery's words are so easy to glide through and her stories always keep you wanting more. This one was no different!!
Mackenzie had an almost perfect life. It was just that she was living with her (what she thought) was good friend rather than a lover. I was a little shocked with the changes that took place with Rhys after the word divorce was mentioned. I really thought the outcome would be a lot different and happier for their relationship turned friendship. There was still a HEA, just not the complete one I expected.
Also, how strangely happy I was when a character from another series "crossed over" into this story.
As always, the author ends on a note that makes me want more. Will we get another story with Stephanie? Even if it's just a novella, I would love to see these characters again!
This is not one of Susan Mallery’s best. The beginning was slow and I really couldn’t get into the characters. The only people who held my interest in this book were Bruno and her former sister-in-law / best friend Stephanie. Wish I could have seen more of them instead of the rushed ending. Without the epilogue I would have been really disappointed with this book. Thankfully Mallery gives us a happy ending. Which is why I gave this a 3 star rating instead of a 2 star.
This is my first book by Susan Mallery and it's a winner!
Talk about the mother-in-law from hell! Mackenzie had the the horror of all horrors in hers. Her husband, Rhys, was a wimp as well. I enjoyed the secondary characters of Stephanie and Four. And, Bruno was just perfect. Sigh. Fascinating tidbits about wine making. Although I'm late to the party, this was a great introduction for me to this author. I really enjoyed the book.
Mackenzie Dienes loves her job as a winemaker for her husband’s family’s winery. But when her marriage ends, she quickly learns that her mother-in-law of 16 years, Barbara, views her as an employee, not family. She has enough money to start over, but needs to find someone to want her not just her talents.
This is a very emotional read with lots of life lessons. I really can’t remember disliking a character as much as Barbara.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Set in the vineyards of the north west part of the USA, The Vineyard of Painted Moon introduces us to the important roles of wine producing. Chief among them is the winemaker and in this case this would be Mackenzie Dienes and she works for her husband's family business. And... she is really good at her job, passionate to be precise.
The family? Well there is Rhys her husband, and his sisters Lori, Stephanie and Four! At the centre of all the action is the matriarch Barbara. Some of these characters are likeable and some not so much. The story is set off by a lovely man proposing to Barbara and giving her a beautiful ring. They look so in love. It sets in play for some of the characters the realisation that they are not living either truthful or satisfying lives. Some way through the book it clicked with me that Bruno who first appears at the vineyards Summer Solstice party, we have met before in another story.
I loved the choices Mackenzie made along the way. She had a lot to deal with. The family is the only one she knows, she has no family of her own. Stephanie is her best friend, she is divorced and struggling rather in life to find passion and meaning.
Barbara is something else, its a wonder all her children are even as sane as they are. She is a controlling woman, and doesn't seem to know much about unconditional love. Her son Rhys I couldn't make sense of. We didn't see into his mind but could only judge him by what he says and does. I was left feeling sad for him.
I don't want to give the plot away. Don't read the blurb before you start this, go straight in, which as it happens I did, so even the beginning spoilers I didn't have. I picked this book up when I was just not finding reading engaging.
The Vineyard at Painted Moon soon picked me up out of that slump and I loved every minute of the book, I kept wanting more and more. The challenges the characters faced, the plot the final epilogue all my kind of read.

Susan Mallery’s books make my heart happy. So–not surprisingly–The Vineyard at Painted Moon was a pleasure to read from the first chapter all the way through to its sigh-worthy end.
I’m always happy to sit down with a new Susan Mallery book but boy did this one hold my attention. It was told from multiple POVs which made me even more interested as I became fully invested in the outcome for the characters. And I loved that each of them were at different places in their lives. Meaning that when their personal struggles all kind of bled into everyone else’s lives where the family was so intertwined it created even more of a challenge... Read More
This is one book that is definitely going onto my 'comfort books' shelf. That's not to say that this was a comfortable read; it was not, but it was an excellent read! Definitely, a chick-lit sort of book, with the added bonus of learning a bit about winemaking and what it takes to run a vineyard. I had to Google several things to understand precisely what the characters were talking about!
Mackenzie Dienes has had a bit of a problematic life, what with being orphaned. However, she thinks she has a stable marriage, an excellent job, friends, and a great family. Then to find out that her husband of 16 years wants a divorce and that everything she has and is, including her job, is tied to him and his family. Now Mackenzie has to make some tough decisions, and she does, but are they the correct decisions?
This was an intriguing read for me, and I loved the evil mother-in-law this the author had going on. This kept the book from becoming overly sappy and sentimental. I would have liked to see some closure on the MIL and Mackenzies part, but it would not be. There is some romance but not very explicit (no lurid sex scenes) and a HEA! (actually several HEA's)

It's hard to give a book very many stars when you dislike almost every single the character. Since two stars means "it was okay," that's the best I can do. This book description, "In true Susan Mallery fashion, strong female characters, friendship, and family are at the center of The Vineyard at Painted Moon," should more accurately say, "Family members behaving badly are at the center of The Vineyard at Painted Moon." Mackenzie loved working at her husband's family's winery and was perfectly happy with her life. Her mother-in-law and sisters-in-law were her best friends, until the day her husband suggested they divorce. This was where the book started to fail for me, and it was still near the beginning. The decision to divorce came quickly and without much discussion or argument. The main reason mentioned for the divorce is completely ridiculous and unbelievable. The mother-in-law went from best friend to hateful in a matter of seconds. The fighting and name calling was disgusting. Someone actually said "I hope she has a miscarriage." Someone treats others horribly, criticizing and complaining in every situation. If you can look past all of that, you might like the book. I was too bothered by bad behavior to truly enjoy the story.
I have marked this review as containing spoilers but incase it's not working, this review contains spoilers.
Heroine POV. The mother in law was so OTT with her vindictive, bitter revenge plot it made it unrealistic. Brief intimacy between the heroine and her husband before they decide on a divorce. Heroine gets a HEA with other man. Secondary characters introduced to continue series possibly.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I am a sucker for books that are set in family run and owned businesses like vineyards and wineries. Like Falcon Crest only less 80s glittery soapy and more romance/women's ficty soapy.
This book reminds a bit of another Susan Mallery book I've enjoyed because of the family dynamics The Best of Friends. In this book (like that one) the heroine is tightly woven and knit into a family that isn't hers and finds that for her own sanity and well being she needs to break away. Also similar in both books, the matriarch of the family -- who had up to the point where the heroine decides she needs to break away had been loving and maternal -- turns on the heroine with a vengeance.
In this one our heroine is Mackenzie, the wife of the oldest son of the family, BFFs with the oldest daughter and the master winemaker at the family vineyard. Only she is not a blood relation. So while she is the brains and taste genius behind their wines she is not allowed to sit in on family meetings that decide the important stuff around the running of the vineyard.
After a night of dismal lovemaking, she and her husband realize they no longer love each other they start the very civilized process of breaking up. They were friends first and they still have a lot of affection for each other. They just don't want to be married to each other anymore.
Mackenzie realizes that she can no longer work there as just an employee, especially since her mother-in-law -- as much as she purports to love Mackenzie -- still treats her as an outsider in where it counts.
Also Mackenzie, even as she realizes her marriage is hollow, is a little hurt by the swiftness and ease at which her husband is ramming through the divorce.
So she begins the process of consciously decoupling herself from the family. And because she has a great pre-nup she has a lot of money and she decides to open her own winery.
And that is when the drama starts. Mackenzie finds out she is pregnant from that last sad little lovemaking with her newly ex husband. And her Mother in law goes ballistic at the idea of Mackenzie leaving and tries everything she can to make her sorry.
I liked this. I liked all the stuff about running and working in a winery that the author saturates the book with. I liked the sheer soaptasticness of the plot and I especially liked all the different relationships Mackenzie had with her ex and her ex-sisters-in-law. Some remained healthy and supportive, some strained and some broke.
I also liked the new man in her life... a lot.
Great soapy women's fiction with a liberal dash of romance and a nice HEA in the end.
I love reading Susan Mallery's women's fiction. It deals with friendship, family, finding your place, new beginnings, and following your dreams. Mackenzie is an orphan, who loses her only family member, her grandfather just before college. When she gets to college, she is rooming with Stephanie Dienes and they become fast friends. Eventually, Mackenzie marries Stephanie's brother Rhys and begins working at the family winery. After 16 years, Mackenzie feels she has found her place and her family. When Rhys tells her he wants a divorce, suddenly she is not sure of anything anymore. Barbara, the matriarch of the family is like her mother, and Rhys' sisters have become her sisters. Will she still be part of the family if she and Rhys get divorced?
Mackenzie has to start life anew and she is one strong woman. She does not realize it, but she has the intellect, the talent and the cojones to do what she needs to do to follow her dream and do what she has always wanted to do in her life. She has some help along the way. Two of her sisters-in-law, support her and encourage her as well. Barbara, is a piece of work. That is all I am going to say about her, you will have to read the book to find out more. This story was just what I needed right now. Many of the characters have a happily ever after, but not all. The ones that don't deserve what they get. I loved the story and the several off-shooting storylines. It is well written and flows very well. The characters were well-developed and I felt like I knew people just like them. I was sorry to say good-bye to Mackenzie, Stephanie and the others. The audiobook was narrated by Tanya Eby. She is one of those narrators that has a wonderful voice to listen to, great expression, pacing and inflection. I thoroughly enjoyed my read/listen of this story. I definitely recommend this story to those who enjoy women's fiction, strong characters, following your dreams and new beginnings. A great story.
I was so disappointed by this book. It was well written, and in my opinion the wine information was a welcome addition, but it did not outweigh the wholly unlikable Barbara. While I think it’s perfectly plausible that there could be someone so negative and awful, who at times is capable of convincing others that she has redeeming qualities, I just don’t have any interest in reading about a person who has such vitriol! Lori was similarly unpleasant to read about, but slightly less so than her mother. That being said, I did manage to read it all in one day. Although, I think that’s because I would likely never convince myself to pick it up again if I had any left at bedtime. I enjoyed reading about Stephanie, Avery, Mackenzie, and Catherine/Four.
Mackenzie Dienes is a successful winemaker in the Walla Walla region of Washington State. Married to Rhys, the son of Barbara, the matriarch of a well established winery, Mackenzie has enjoyed the sense of family and support from Rhys's family. She is close to her sisters-in-law, and felt like Barbara was a second mother. All that changes though when Rhys asks for a divorce, and Barbara turns into the mother-in-law from hell. Suddenly Mackenzie has lost everything, facing an unknown future. Channeling an inner strength she didn't realize she possessed and with the support of friends, Mackenzie begins to create her own legacy, forging a new path. Filled with strong female characters, although I dispised Barbara, another wonderful family saga by Susan Mallory. 3.5 stars.
I have been interested in wineries and vineyards since a trip we made a trip to Napa Valley a few years ago, so I was intrigued by Susan Mallery's newest novel, The Vineyard at Painted Moon.
Mackenzie is a well-respected winemaker at her husband Rhys Barcella's family vineyard, Bel Apres Winery, in Walla Walla, Washington. She met his sister Stephanie at college, and they have been best friends ever since. All four of the Barcella adult children live on the grounds of the winery, under the careful and critical eye of their mother Barbara.
Barbara freely shares her harsh opinions of her children with them- Rhys, Stephanie (divorced with two teens), Lori (who just wants her mother's respect), and Elizabeth (whom she calls Four). Elizabeth is an artist, a free spirit with a happy marriage and wonderful young children, which makes her mother crazy. Barbara adores Mackenzie and respects her work ethic and talent, and feels like Mackenzie is family.
Rhys and Mackenzie seem to be just going through the motions of a marriage. They love each other, but there is no passion there. When Rhys asks for a divorce, Mackenzie decides it's time to strike out on her own.
This decision enrages Barbara, who sees this as a betrayal. Her family took Mackenzie in and gave her a career. Mackenzie might be willing to stay if she could own a piece of the winery, as all of Barbara's children do. She has worked hard to earn that, but Barbara refuses.
I very much enjoyed learning all about the winery business from the perspective of the vineyard owner, I haven't read many novels with that setting. The family dynamic is fascinating, combining the normal familial relationships with the business relationships.
There were some wonderful touches- flying the "cookie flag" outside the house when someone has made fresh cookies, inviting other family members to bring their takeout containers, the personal chef who makes dinner every night for the family members and leaves lunch for the next day (I want that service), and the fact that tea towels became such a big seller in the cafe with the tourists.
Mackenzie has to face big changes and decide what she really wants out of life. Is owning a piece of a vineyard worth losing the only family she has?
At the end of the book, Susan Mallery includes helpful information about wine pairings- what type of wine to drink with any dish, as well as a few quinoa salad recipes.
We've been doing wine-tasting Zooms, and I think that The Vineyard at Painted Moon would be a great way to combine Book Club with Wine Tasting Zooms. If you enjoy wine and interesting family stories as I do, put The Vineyard at Painted Moon on your to-be-read list.
Thanks to Harlequin for putting me on Susan Mallery's tour.
Mackenzie Dienes life is just perfect. Well, almost. She never had a good relationship with her own family, but once she married Rhys she learned the true meaning of family. Not only had she been his sister Stephanie's best friend for years since they were college roommates, she found a mother in Barbara, their mother. Mackenzie also drew close to Rhys's sisters Lori and Catherine, who chose to be called by the name of Four.
Not only does Mackenzie have the family she always desperately craved, she has the ideal job. She works with her husband's family's winery, overseen by her mother-in-law Barbara, and that is something that Mackenzie excels at. She has an unrivaled creative talent when it comes to the business. However, there is something desperately missing in her life. Mackenzie and Rhys are married in name only and it has been that way for years. The flame is gone and one day they come to an agreement to end things between them.
This is the beginning of the end for Mackenzie. Giving up on her failed marriage means that she could possible lose everything and she certainly was not prepared for that. Will Mackenzie be able to stay at the winery, stay close to Barbara, Stephanie and the other girls? What is more is that she has a very close relationship with her nieces and nephews and she doesn't want that to be jeopardized.
Mackenzie not only has to face decisions much bigger than ending her marriage. Her career will no doubt be affected, as well as her relationships. Will Mackenzie ever find the true meaning of contentment and happiness? Factor in another major life change for Mackenzie and she truly must think of her future.
What a book! First of all, I loved Mackenzie. She was a kind, intelligent and caring woman. Conversely, there were some horrible characters in this book. I will just name two: Barbara and Rhys were not likable characters, and this made me feel even more compassion towards Mackenzie. Just as there were unlikeable characters in this story, there was another character that came into the story that truly warmed my heart.
Family drama, excellent character development, conflicts and a wonderful conclusion all came together to develop quite an engaging story. I loved the discussion questions at the end of the book as well. Being able to consider those after reading this marvelous story impressed this book on me even more.
Many thanks to Harlequin and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
This book is all the feels! It is beautifully written about family dynamics, friendships, and expectations. Mackenzie Dienes appears to have it all - a beautiful home, best friends, and a successful career as a winemaker at one of the best wineries, but it’s not her family. All of this is tied to her husband, Rhys, and when they decide to divorce she leaves with a postnuptial agreement and her clothes, everything else belongs to her husband’s family. Mackenzie is fearful of change, but is re-energized when she decides to buy a winery. She is well respected in the wine industry and partners with Bruno in buying Painted Moon, an established winery. Seasons change as does life and life at a vineyard!
