I received an eARC through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This was a light hearted, fun, food filled story that reminded the reader of their childlike wonder.

Wonderful illustrations, upbeat and fun characters and a magical monster world brings so much delight to this story. I thought the inclusion of delicious recipes will bring joy to so many households. Especially with most of the world in lockdown, and having to teach children from home, Monster Delights will help tie in Reading and Cooking time beautifully!

(I received an ARC from Europe Comics, via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review! Thanks to both for trusting me with 'Monster Delights')

Now that Spooktober is over, most of us are looking forward to Christmas; that one time of the year that makes everyone remember their childhood, and look for feelings of belonging and warmth to get through the coldest days of the year. Good news: this is the PERFECT graphic novel for this jolly time of the year!

In this cute short story, we meet a young pastry apprentice named Chris, who is as creative and skilled within the kitchen as he is sweet and kind outside of it. After Chris's boss sets an almost impossible task for him,. which Chris somehow manages to fulfil, a sneaky little thief leads him into a wonderland of snow and winter . There in the town of Fridgeback, Chris meets a young elf girl by the name of Hannah, who owns a pastry shop but can't quite make it work... Together, Chris and Hannah will enter a contest in the hopes of saving the pastry shop--a contest that will face them against the very best pastry makers of the entire town in the fight to prepare the one dish that can satisfy young Jack Frost the most.

This. Just. Ah, this was just so sweet! The perfect story to take your mind elsewhere for a few minutes. Its 52 pages are buzzing with colour, and the art style is really something. The lines flow effortlessly in every pannel, and make this graphic novel an absolute delight. Being a huge fan of 'Rise Of The Guardians', i loved how the artists built their own Jack Frost. A white-haired boy, trapped too soon in his enterprise's business, that can't remember how to smile. It was a very interesting character, and I enjoyed getting to know him a little.

Hopefully there will be more volumes of Monster Delights coming our way!

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.

I spotted this adorable looking book on Netgalley and quickly clicked the read now button to get to reading this one!

Meet Chris, a hardworking boy who loves making pastries and can make them beautifully (really he made me very hungry with all he could whip up in this book). He really has a skill to make them. Too bad his boss is a insert some mean words. One day when making 300 (!!!!!!!) pastries he meets a critter that steals one of it. Naturally, because why not hey?, Chris dives after it which had me in stitches as it just seemed so silly that he didn’t even think about it one moment. He enters a cold but wonderful new world (named Fridgebottom which had me thinking of Bikinibottom and that is what stuck with me) with plenty of rules… including one about humans. I would hope that the next volume dives a bit deeper into the whys of that.

We meet a girl named Hannah who has also makes pastries but can also do magic. I instantly was a fan of the girl and I found myself rooting for her. Because just like Cinderella, she has the mean aunt and the mean nieces/siblings/whatever they were who are always on her case and making fun of her.

I loved this world and seeing who and what lives in there, and I also loved the contest our duo enters. I was definitely constantly rooting for our duo and I just loved all the ideas they thought up for the contest and then ultimately loved what they picked. That is so creative, so fun!

I just LOVE that there are recipes added and I love that they were edited by the characters themselves with notes, additions, corrections, etc.. I would love to try out one or two, though I would have to convert some measurements to fit EU stuff.

The art is just so cute and fluffy and I love the style, it fits so very well with all the warm pastries that are being made in this book.

I am curious what is going to be happening next as the story isn’t over yet and Chris has made a big (and wise) decision. So I definitely want to try out Monster Delights 2. Not just to see what will happen next but also because I need more pastry love in my life. And I would recommend this one to all.

Graphic Novel
Chris is a pastry chef for a demanding restaurant owner. He's tasked with making 300 fancy desserts overnight. Just after he finishes, a squirrel appears from nowhere and steals a whole tray of them. Chris follows the squirrel through the portal and ends up in a magic city. He ends up helping the Monster Delights bakery chef create an amazing dessert for the annual Jack Frost contest.
Brightly colored illustrations bring the action to life in this book for lower middle grade readers.

This is a short graphic novel about a boy, pastry chef, who travels to a magical land, meets magical creatures and has an adventure.

I adored this story and didn’t want it to end! It was a simple plot filled with magic, fun and adventure that you can’t help but get sucked in to. It was a story about baking, friends and the importance of memories. It showed another side to the Winter season.

The Illustrations were beautiful and fit the story perfectly. They flowed smoothly with the plot and made reading this book an even more enjoyable experience.

My only critique is that it was so short, I wanted more.

I gave this 5 stars.

A young pastry chef gets his latest invention stolen fresh out the oven by a critter from a different dimension, so follows it – and finds an icy world beyond where, if he's bold, brave and talented enough, he might just fit in – and potentially collaborate with a new-found friend in saving her bakery. This is actually a pretty solid comic for the young, even if it is interrupted frequently with double-page recipe sections. The visual side of things is definitely commended, and the whole solution to the problem is done with a very Heston Blumenthal manner, which I found very much in keeping. We're left still not quite sure what "they" do to humans the other side, but eager for seconds – but as this is still oven-warm in the original and in translation we'll just have to wait.

I received the eARC of this book through netgalley in exchange for an honest review, and I am so glad that I requested this one. This book was everything that I hoped it would be and so much more.

Monster Delights is a wonderful story of friendship, rediscovering passions and being true to yourself. The illustrations in this book are beautifully done and brilliantly capture the love, passion and magic that went into each of Chris and Hannah's desserts

This is a review for book 1 and book 2 of Monster Delight.
Thank you, Europe Comics, for the review copies.

This is a sweet and colourful series that is easy to read and full of imaginative characters. Elves, Ogres and Dragons just to name a few. Chris ends up in Fridgebottom by following a squirrel (as you do) that was sneaking pastries from the restaurant he was working in.

Once he’s arrived circumstances have him teaming up with Hannah to help her win a baking competition. After this he decides to stay, and the second book follows further adventures involving magical friends and desserts.

I like that the recipes are included in the comic. I’ve not tried any, but they look easy enough to follow which makes them even more tempting.

While it doesn’t take long to read, I enjoyed both books and am looking forward to the next. The characters a likeable and the worldbuilding is fun. The artwork is vibrant, and I like the style. Monster Delight is a fun read in the best sense of the word.

Monster Delights: The Heart of Winter is such a cute children’s book! I absolutely loved it, and I was so hungry while I was reading it (I’m looking forward to trying the recipes included in the book). The artwork by David Raphet is super cute as well. Good food should always evoke fond memories, not just taste good. I don’t think Hella (the aunt) realized that cooking isn’t just having a tasty recipe, but putting love and thought into your creation.

I would definitely recommend this to any of my young family members. Anyone who reads this will reignite their love of pastries and most likely come away from reading with a craving for sweets. My congratulations to the writers’ Dos Santos and Hachmi, the artist Raphet, and the colorist Blavier.

Hâte de lire le tome 2.
Peut-être découvrira-t-on ce qu'on fait aux humains à Monster....
