When the newlywed couple Brad and Julia decide to move into their new home, they are ecstatic to start their new lives. They finally have a home of their own, and with a baby on the way, this couldn't have come at a better time.
However, just one day in the apartment is enough to tell them that something is very wrong. Things go missing only to reappear in strange places, footsteps and whispers echo in the rooms, and every night, the same song plays from somewhere inside the apartment.
The longer Brad and Julia spend in the apartment, the more they learn about the dark secrets that haunt it. No longer able to afford moving to a new place, they have to make a decision - run away from their new home, or face the apparitions that plague it.
One thing is for sure, though. They are not the only inhabitants of Apartment 401.

Brad and Julia move into a new recently renovated apartment building. They are happy that they found a nice roomy apartment to call home as with Julia pregnant they needed the extra room. They are not there long though when small things start happening like Brad's keys moving from where he left them and the keys ending up somewhere totally unexpected, but it doesn't take him long to lay blame in Julia's direction thinking she is moving things.
When she denies it totally Brad is still skeptical but he starts wondering what is really going on as they start to hear music throughout the apartment. Which at first they think it is coming from the neighbors, but they realize that no one is playing the music and yet it comes at odd hours of the day and night.
With the help of the neighbors they try to piece together what is going on within their apartment and come to the realization that it could be "haunted". They do not believe it at first, but when they both see ghost children in their apartment is when they finally realize that what they are seeing is real and not their imagination, but it is when they reach out to a medium that things go from bad to worse as when the ghosts are stirred up they become angry and the haunting is just beginning!
Who or what is haunting the apartment? Why is the apartment haunted? Does Brad and Julia find relief from the ghosts? No spoilers here as you will need to read the book!
Thoughts:
This was my first time reading this author and I was impressed at how quick I was pulled into the story. One of my favorite horror sub-genres is hauntings/ghosts so I am usually on the lookout for those type of stories.
Though it was a little slow in the beginning of the story to set up world building and introducing characters, but after about the 25% mark the story took off as ghost action started happening.
The pace kept kicking up with everything that was happening to the characters, but the last half of the book is where the story went into overdrive and I was turning the pages quick to see what would happen next. Looking forward to stepping into more of this author's work! Giving this book four "Spooky Boo" stars!
Brad and Julie move into their new apartment and soon the horrors begin. Who are those children playing in the rooms? What about the neighbors? What happened to Larry who lived in their flat before they moved in? The story started very mysterious with many allusions to Rosemary's Baby. The atmosphere was similar. The denouement was great but not absolutely plausible in my opinion. Who was Julie before she met Brad? What about Brad himself? Here the author comes up with a relatively thin story. Otherwise very dark, uncanny and to the point. Really recommended haunting stuff!
This is a brilliant read. Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuously. Can't wait to read what the author brings out next. Recommend reading.
Well, I loved it but I did have some issues. But lets start with the good. It was definitely scary, and that ending was unexpected. Also, bad people have bad endings. So I always like that.
I wasn't super happy with the inner monologue of how the males saw females. Also, this book needs a trigger warning for child SA. It wasn't described in the book, but there was enough here to be heartbreaking and TW was needed.
Steven is the top real estate agent at the firm Ledbetter and although he has many applicants to choose from for apartment 401 it isn’t hard for him to pick, because he has super natural help. The “lucky“ couple yes do you and Mark and they are expecting a child and excited to move into the new home. There was something weird though they hear footsteps, knocking your standard fare in a haunted house, but unfortunately it doesn’t stay that way. Not to mention the weird boy Cody who lives downstairs he is eight and knows things a neighbor boys shouldn’t know, but is he weird or is it his imaginary friends. There is so much to this book and I debated whether to say it in a review or not and I decided not to because I think everyone should experience the OMG moments that I did. I didn’t even mention the nice neighbor Travis and he deserves a mention. This book was so good I already downloaded doors the second book in the haunted places series. If you love horror and you have never read a book by this author you’re in luck, because he has many and they all have great reviews I can’t wait to read more. I highly highly highly recommend this book!
Although this story rambled a little in some parts, it was a good creepy story. Apartment 401 is being haunted by a group of children. At first it's simple things like items disappearing, being moved, sounds and the same song playing. Then things turn to a more violent nature. Who are the kids, why are they haunting this "new" apartment and what do they want? Some nice twists at the end. I predicted one but was completely surprised by another. A good creepy story about a very haunted apartment.

A strange, drawn out, story with a very unexpected twist at the end. The ghosts of children, abused and murdered at the hands of a deviant Catholic priest and his helper nuns, seeking revenge and justice from beyond the grave. The nature of this revenge took the form of vigilante justice, metered out to perceived wrongdoers unfortunate enough to move into a particular block of flats. The plot was good but, in my opinion, tended to drift.

How did this get so many stars?? Are readers unaware that there is an abundance of quality, intelligent writing in the supernatural genre? Ugh. This was just awful.
Boris Bacic is a master of the macabre. I have enjoyed almost all his books. Apartment 401 should have been an ideal apartment for a married couple like Julia and Brad. Brad is not keen on the purchase but Julia loves the apartment. The neighbours are nice and helpful but the couple are a bit perturbed by eerie footsteps and strange music. The horror keeps escalating especially when Julia discovers some extremely gruesome and chilling facts about their apartment. Their very lives are at risk. The ending of the book is unexpected and shocking.
Julia and Brad are expecting a baby so they move to Apartment 401. The neighbors are nice it's a good neighborhood. Then the same song plays every night and ghostly children are seen. Everything is not as it seems in Apartment 401.
I found it very unusual that I didn't like this book as I liked the previous book The odds by the same author. Unfortunately this story kept going on and on and on and there was not much of a wow Factor or any action happening in the first 7 chapters. It really put me off reading it.
This wasn’t bad and probably as a Netflix remake and some loose ends tied up.. would probably be a solid story. However with the book and the narrator, so-so.
THIS book is INCREDIBLE! It should be a movie. They need to contact the author and make a deal with him to make a film because it's that great! I highly recommend this book! I want to rate it more than five stars. This gets 10+! ❤
When I got “Apartment 401”, I thought it was a stand alone ghost story. After finishing it I happily found out that Bacic had a “Haunted Places” series, and that this was just one book from it. With that information, I do want to add that I believe this is a stand alone book. Meaning there is not a second book with these characters. We start this story with a realtor talking to a ghost in a room. Trying to find the right renters for an apartment that came up for sale. When the ghost picks the nice married couple to sell it to. I’d like to say no one is really who they seemed to be in this story. Which added to the excitement. But also made it so that you can not trust your own thoughts or feelings when reading. This is a book that starts slowly, really slow actually. The twists and turns start in the beginning. Then slowly take off. I actually almost stopped the story because it was so slow to go. But I was already half way through at that point so I chose to keep pushing through. I’m glad I did. The ghosts are weird. The neighbors don’t seem to think anything is going on. And there is a lonely kid, who seems to know more than he will say. There does need to be a warning. In this book it does talk about child abuse. There isn’t much in it. But the way Bacic writes, well it hits you hard. Because of that I’m giving a Warning Rating of 3/10. Even with that I’m still giving this book a 7/10 rating. Bacic’s wrote this in an easy way to read and understand. The chills happen quickly as you get past the ⅓ mark, which helped the book greatly. The character build up was really good too. The ending…wow. It was better than I had hoped.
Vengeful spirits are scary enough, but add in the spirits of mistreated, orphaned children and you have got one hell of a horror novel!
This story had a brilliantly spooky atmosphere with a great sense of mystery with it too. The whole time I was wondering what the twist would be - and I did not see that ending coming!
I really liked the characters in this book, especially Travis. I would have liked to have known a bit more about Raquel and Cody as I would have loved to see how Cody dealt with and interacted with the ‘problem’ in the apartment.
Overall, I loved this book and I can’t wait to read my next book by Boris Bacic.
I really enjoyed this book. Super happy with the way it ended. He's a fantastic author and I look forward to reading the rest of the books in this series!
This was incredible and I loved every minute of it! If you’re a fan of super cozy horror that comes with an insane plot twist, this is for you. Brad & Julia, a newly wed couple move into apt. 401, they begin to experience strange things and quickly realize their apartment is haunted. They can’t sell because they’ve put everything into this place, they try to banish these spirits by calling a psychic medium, they even hold a seance with a ouija board and everything! Finally Brad gets a hold of the previous tenant’s address and goes to meet him and things start to make more sense. Meanwhile Julia finds out somethings on her own. I would say this is one of the best haunted house books I’ve read, this is right up there with Lee Mountford’s Haunted series. Highly recommend!!
I really enjoyed this ghost story. It had some unique parts and the ending had a twist I wasn’t expecting. The only thing I recommend is NOT listening to the audio version. I consider myself an audiobook connoisseur. The quality of this was not the best. I think I would have enjoyed it a tad more had I read it.
A creepy little page-tuner. Never heard of Boris' work before but I'm glad I stumbled on this book. I like a haunted tale, especially when it's set in one location. There's just something about stories where the locations and characters are minimal that I really enjoy, they always seem a lot more engrossing to me than a story that has it all happening, all at once.
The story of Apartment 401 unravels well, there's a couple of nice twists and turns that you don't see coming, and the ending comes full circle in a satisfying way. It's a quick read, but it's a book that will definitely have those nape hairs rising.
The thing I liked about this one the most, is that it seemingly moves in a direction where you feel like you know what's coming, and you feel like it's going to be a story that you've read many times before, but it suddenly spirals into a new territory, and the territory that in ventures into is a welcome surprise.
I'll be sure to check out more of Boris' work in the future, I can imagine he's a writer whose stories are only going to get better and more creative as times goes by.
Definitely recommend this one if you're after a breezy yet chilling and harrowing read.
Oh, come on. The ending was a HUGE disappointment which resulted in just a mediocre read. If I knew then, what I know now, I probably wouldn't have read it.
I know I can always count on a book by Boris Bacic when I want a quick horror story.
Brad and Julia are expecting their first baby and are excited about moving into a home of their own. When they move into Apartment 401, they think that they have found their dream home. Unfortunately, things start to happen that aren't easily explained and they begin to have second thoughts.
This was a well-written, tension filled story with plenty of scares, emotion and terror. I definitely wasn't expecting the huge plot twist and that made it an even better read. And, I will never hear the song "Strangers in the Night" again without thinking of this tale!
A good story, but the writing definitely detracted from the reading experience. Way too much telling rather than showing, and some simplicities of language took away from the atmosphere. I don't regret having read it, but I am glad I got it from Amazon Unlimited rather than bought it, unfortunately.
When she swiveled her head in his direction, she saw him staring at the black entrance of apartment 401. Only now, instead of the dark, there were hands grabbing at the edges of the doorframe, dozens of child-like, pale hands, too innocent-looking, too clean, but still scary nonetheless. Their fingers wiggled like worms in a bucket, dragging themselves further through the entrance, some of them even reaching all the way to the elbows.
They were the perfect couple; a loving husband and a wifr expecting to welcome their first child in the coming months. For Brad and Julia Napier, things seemed almost too perfect especially when they landed the opportunity to purchase a luxury apartment. From the moment they stepped past the threshold they could feel uneasy in the air, but their love to the upscale design won over any lingering fears and doubts they had. Apartment 401 has been vacant for quite some time, and their realtor; Stephen Hicks, was all too eager to get it officially off of the market. Waiting zero time after the paperwork was signed, the young couple quickly began moving into the apartment and turning it into their home. Unfortunately, strange occurrences would begin almost instantaneous as they would hear heavy footsteps and a repeat of the same song getting louder with each passing night. Believing their house is haunted or possessed, Julia brings on the help of a physic medium; Abraham in an attempt to cleanse the house. Sensing restless and angry spirits, they learn children are who haunt their home, and they are desperate for revenge and justice for the horrors they faced.
“It was a little girl, no older than seven. Dressed like she was ready for church on Sunday. She just kept starin’ at me, and I knew better than to be surprised. I knew right away that she wasn’t… natural ’cause I felt this sorta cold emanatin’ from her, y’know? Like when you reach your hand toward a frozen ice cube and you feel the cold before you even touch it.” He contracted and extended the fingers on his hand.
St. Maria Catholic Orphanage held home to countless children over the years, many of which never aged out or even left through the doors. The Priest, Father Jeremy, was a sickened man who preyed on the children to fulfill his sexual and deviant needs. When Julia happened to pull up loose floorboards and discover a metal lockbox, she never images the nightmares she would find inside. Dozens of photos of naked boys and girls, and countless other of their strangled and murdered corpses laying on the bed in his own personal chapel. Unable to resurface the memories that she really was Mary, a girl who stayed at that same orphanage, she was powerless until the spirits to children she once knew began pointing the way. Directing energy onto Brad, they revealed to her the monster he truly was. Stalking her and playing with her emotions, he sabotaged relationships and gaslit her into becoming his girlfriend. Watching the memories roll but she was him poking holes in the condoms and her getting pregnant. With everything being a lie, she ran from the man she was supposed to love and found herself nearly strangled to death by him. Luckily, the children came and drug him back to the apartment where his soul now belonged to those four walls for the end of eternity.
Slowly, the child began turning as if in slow motion. Brad saw his ear, then the neatly cut sideburn, one big eye- Thud, thud, thud. Just above his head. Brad instinctively looked up, and he wished he hadn’t. It took his brain a moment to process the anomaly on the ceiling that stared back at him. And then he realized that it was the kid, holding onto the ceiling like a fucking fly, staring down at him from an upside-down position, his face disturbingly calm. Brad widened his eyes, muttering ‘oh shit’ as he felt himself stumbling backward and losing balance. The moment seemed to last forever. Brad wanted to scream, but no sound came out of his mouth. He was overcome with a sense of zero gravity for a split second, and then he hit the floor with his back and then his head.
