Mitsumi is bound for high school in Tokyo! She’s got book smarts, but this small-town girl is about to find out she’s massively unprepared for the social norms of big city high schoolers.
Pumped up for this new seinen series that will soon be adapted and sure of myself getting seated for it. Just like the delightful cover, Skip and Loafer promised a bonzer story of Mitsumi who is headed to Tokyo for high school. Despite her aptitude in the classroom, this small-town girl is about to discover that she is utterly unprepared for the social mores of high schoolers in big cities.
This manga illustrated the difficulties that youngsters usually encounter in high school. As Mitsumi learns that the social life at Tsubame High is extremely dissimilar from her junior high school, we can see her floundering from her first day. She struggles to understand others, misses social cues, and strives to reconcile her dreams with reality. Skip and Loafer has a convenient plot and a straightforward premise. The story is practically banal in its core, yet it is told in a way that everyone can relate to. Although Mitsumi's narrative will be all too familiar to everyone who had the feeling square peg in round hole in high school, witnessing her rise to the occasion is nonetheless motivating.
For the most part, I really love Mitsumi's character. Aside from the forthright illustration where she happens to not be your average shoujo female character with the big eyes and long lashes, Mitsumi is the type of character that you'll grow to love as you know better. She is naive, yet very fun and down to earth. She works well with a variety of people because of her accommodating personality. Even though she occasionally falters and makes mistakes, she is able to rapidly make friends and settle into the social structure of the classroom because of her openness and friendliness, which tends to put other people at ease.
And of course we have the attractive and naturally outgoing guy she runs into at the station after getting lost; in which they hit right off the bat as soon as the two were introduced. Their classmates are surprised by their odd connection, given the opposite personality — but Souske's charms end up being exactly what Mitsumi needs to overcome the social divide between her and her new peers.
Despite offering the modest stakes, Skip and Loafer is by no means a dull narrative. In actuality, the manga is brought to life by its characters. Compared to the conventional "slice of life" characters, who frequently appeared as bland; Takamatsu offered more engaging and complex ones here. This manga makes me feel nostalgic since it gets me to reminisce back to my high school years. It was wonderful to reflect on those times and relate to them once more.
I believe this manga may appear to be overly simplistic, but it does have a strong grasp of its characters and plot, as well as a respectable sense of humour. Just go and pick this one up already.
This was so stinking cute! I didn't know what to expect going into this series, but I think it is the most charming thing in the world. Mitsumi is from a small town, but transfers to a school in Tokyo. It's so interesting watching her adjust to the changes at this school including watching her make new friends. She definitely has some social awkwardness about her, but people adore her and rightfully so. This is only the beginning and I can't wait to see where the rest of the story takes us.
꒰ 🍓 ୭⁺𖥻 just a silly little review: do u want clear skin? good grades? both sides of your pillow to be cold? for your headphones to fit perfectly over your ear? the perfect parking spot right near the front?
prescription: skip and loafer
༉‧₊˚➜ skip and loafer follows young high school freshman mitsumi who moves to tokyo from her small beach town in order to make it big in the city. she’s sweet and full of youthful naivety, determined to work hard and get into the university of her dreams.
we follow her working through the changes that come with moving to a big city, forming friendships, and falling in love (!!). this manga is tooth-achingly sweet, but also deals with the complex issues that come with growing up, dealing with feelings, and how our relationships with other people shape us and our lives. ౨ৎ
I watched the first 2 episodes of the anime that just came out w my bf and i loved it so i decided to read it :3 ahh i want to know what happens next :3
What a sweet tale about a young woman who left her small town and attended junior high school in Tokyo while discovering friendship and adventure. All of the characters were fantastic; they were all unique, imperfect, and perfect in their own right. The artwork is also rather adorable. I am incredibly excited for this series.
Iwakura Mitsumi is a determined, studyholic small-town girl who moved to Tokyo to achieve her big dreams for the future. On her first day, she met Shima Sousuke, a hunk extrovert whom she got well-acquainted with. Soon, after a few miscalculations, she found herself surrounded by true friends and memories she's going to treasure forever.
This is a wholesome and quality series! I love the art style so much. And I love just how relatable Iwakura Mitsumi is. Her character is strong and adaptive to change. Although she may appear dumb or innocent at some points, she isn't afraid to take control. I think that's a turning point, and a different take in shoujo mangas. One that I've rarely seen. We were so used to the shy, alone, insecure, or bullied girl trope. That's why this series is something.
This series surely made me reminisce about Kimi ni Todoke, although this story and Mitsumi are more cheerful than the mentioned series. I love just everything about it! Even though Iwakura Mitsumi is a smart girl, she still appears airheaded on the sides, which brings hilarious moments throughout the series. Also, I love how the author dragged romance into the plot innocently and healthy.
I rate it 5 out of 5 stars because this is a gem, I tell you!
Don't get me wrong, it was cute okay, it was, but I wasn't exactly feeling the story, so I probably won't continue. Unfortunately, it’s hard for me to find a slice of life manga that I actually enjoy and don’t get bored of after the first volume.
Mitsumi is leaving the village life behind for the high-octane halls of a prestigious Tokyo high school. With her whole life mapped out and an exaggerated grasp of her own abilities, she’s about to learn that the problem with maps is that they leave out a lot of the important little details sometimes…
Here’s a book that’s odd and endearing and oddly endearing. If you like fish out of water stories, especially ones where the fish has grossly overestimated her life skills and ability to function in a much larger pond, you will love this book.
By the time we’re mere pages in and have seen Mitsumi’s ludicrously detailed life plan and she has a wonderfully cliche ‘train leaving the village’ scene that is immediately derailed I had a hunch we’d be in for something special.
Poor Mitsumi has the worst first day of school one could possibly imagine and I love how we get such a clear picture of what she is and isn’t as a character, but she shows her chops intellectually even as she’s fumbling at everything else. I think the book is good to not make her a total mess, though I was feeling the anxiety and cringe at the start.
Amazingly, there are no less than four distinct female characters in this book and they are all really interesting. Beyond Mitsumi, we have the hot girl in class, who is mercifully not the mean girl nor at all what you would think she is.
There’s also the socially awkward girl, who ends up having a lot more depth than just shame and loathing of others. And even our resident mean girl has reasons for why she’s such a pain - a classic try-hard who feels if she isn’t standing out she isn’t anything and doesn’t quite care what she’s stepping on to make herself important.
All this and I haven’t even mentioned Sousuke, our male lead, yet. He’s a real breath of fresh air, being lighthearted and nice without the usual snark we have bolted on to these sorts of guys. I mean, he did get issued the standard fraught backstory, but even that seems a cut above the norm in terms of interesting. Great chemistry with Mitsumi as well.
And this book’s politics seem oddly ahead of the curve too. From a male drama senpai showing up in heels and nobody batting an eye to the suggestion (or error of translation?) that Mitsumi’s aunt is either a very tall woman or a trans man, there’s a lot of throwaway extra going on here.
It’s almost impossible to go over everything this book is doing and how rushed it doesn’t feel. Mitsumi keeps in touch with her old friends, which is awesome, and as somebody who also graduated in a small class in a small town and then went to a place for secondary school that was roughly 280x the size, I feel like her struggle is depicted rather accurately.
Later in the book, she gets a hell of a wake-up call that being the top dog in your own school and on entrance exams means absolutely nothing when you’re thrown into a group where everybody is just as smart and just as motivated. I remember getting my first exam results back in university and being blindsided by that exact bit of knowledge. This book doesn’t have its head in the clouds - it knows life and shows that constantly.
4.5 stars - I don’t love the art but I love everything else. I could seriously go on for another few paragraphs at how much I enjoyed this first volume, but my five star rating will have to do it for me. It is a strong, strong start to a book that you can kind of realize is special even as you read it.
"Skip To Loafer" is slice of life, school life, romcom manga set in Tokyo. Iwakura Mitsumi is a recent transplant to the big city, from a decidedly more rural town, attending a Tokyo high school to pursue her dreams. They are, in order, attend Tokyo U, graduate with a law degree, become a civil servant, and return home to her hometown to share her prosperity and run for mayor.
At its heart, this work is a comedy, but it has a such nice pace, a good vibe, and Mitsumi is such interesting character who is very smart, but sometimes prone to such brain farts such as, having the nickname of "hidden banchou", or a secret delinquent leader, or puking on her homeroom teacher on opening ceremony after giving a speech representing her class of freshmen.
The first volume is really good, and it is nice to enjoy manga with such a pure and charming heroine who has good friends supporting her at a relaxed phase. An added bonus would be getting to experience Tokyo and its component districts and see it with the eye of a newcomer. I am definitely going to continue reading this with the second volume.
That was so cute. I’m excited to see where this goes, it’s really promising so far. So many of the characters are really likeable and the conversations seem to flow naturally between the characters even when they’re awkward.
the vibes in this are outstanding!! super awkward, coming-of-age focused but is also so funny and wholesome. i particularly like the art style, and structurally the story develops really well! i’m obsessed
I don't know what happened but somewhere in between from when I first preordered this book a few months ago to when the book actually arrived, I had thought this story took place at UNIVERSITY, not high school. As a result, it took me a little bit to REALLY get into the story, but even with that said, this story really delivers in the way that I hoped it would!
Our main character, Iwakura, is such a fun and down to Earth girl that made me laugh more than once. She's so open and honest and genuinely wants to give her all. Throw in the super kind "hunk," Shima, in her new school adventures, and you have a really great time! I really liked how they both just clicked despite them having very different backgrounds. Them talking and hanging out were definitely some of my favorite parts!
Speaking of favorites, another thing that was my favorite about this read is the friendships. I love how Iwakura's friends from her home call and check on her. I love how her new friends in Tokyo are very different, but care a lot about Iwakura. These friendships are one of the most exciting things about this story and can't wait to see these friendships continue to bloom!
I'm also VERY excited about this potential romance that looks like is happening! Be still my heart, I. Am. Here. For. It!
Overall, this a very calming and fun slice-of-life! I loved the story more as it progressed and really enjoyed a lot of the characters. Looking forward to seeing what happens next!
To be honest not really my cup of tea I kind of went between 2 1/2 to 3 stars with this manga. The art works good however though the story never falls flat to me I’ve read better but I’ve also read worse I probably won’t be reading the rest of these it’s just not really for me.
This is one of the nicest manga! I love how in this volumes, we can see how our female lead going through with her life, with new environment (since she is from countryside), new school and make friends. I truly think the fl character are so refreshing. Yes, she is naive, cute, honest, kind. But I love how she have her own will, she knows what she want and also the boundary between friend.
Her and the ml chemistry is so 🤌🏻 Good thing that they both start as a friend, not the type of love at first sight. I don't know whether the next volumes they will fall for each other, cause I think the romance development should be slower in this one.
Overall, volumes 1 is just nice and funny. The comedy is not what I expected. Highly recommend if you want some good comedy and nice storyline! ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5
manga opowiada o dziewczynie, która przenosi się z małej wioski do elitarnego liceum w Tokio to opowieść o zawieraniu relacji i mierzeniu się z nowym środowiskiem, pełna uroku i śmiechu
