Arisu is now 26. He’s thriving in his adult life: he’s a psychologist, he’s happily married to Usagi who’s pregnant with their first child. However, he gets into an accident and finds himself having to play Borderland’s games a second time. And this time, he remembers everything and he is fully determined to make his way back to his family - no matter what it takes.

Mi sistema necesitaba más contenido de AIB, así que decidí por fin leer AIB Retry; no me decepcionó. Extrañaba el estilo de diseño. Realmente pensé que no sentiría la misma emoción que leyendo los otros mangas, pero fue todo lo contrario. Me alegró muchísimo ver esta versión adulta de Arisu como un psicólogo que cree no tener las habilidades necesarías todavía para conectar con sus pacientes (porque me identifico) y que momentáneamente pudo recuperar sus recuerdos de Borderlands al pasar por un accidente, que lo devuelve a ese mundo que tanto le costó salir por primera vez, hace ocho años. Igualmente, tener un pequeño vistazo de su relación actual con Usagi, fue una venda al corazón.
Hablando del juego que se desarrolla en ambos tomos, está a la altura de lo que esperarías de un juego de corazones. La sensación que te promete dejar un juego de esta baraja, de arrepentimiento, se consigue perfecto. Me encantó.

Sekuel dari serial Alice in Borderland setelah satu dekade (baik dalam konteks dunia nyata maupun narasi ceritanya). Sebagai penikmat berat serial utama maupun spinoff-nya, saya jelas merasa berkewajiban untuk baca judul ini juga... walau sebenarnya ada perasaan sangsi apakah memang cerita ini masih perlu diteruskan lagi, mengingat ending cerita aslinya sudah amat pas. Mungkin karena muncul adaptasi live action-nya di Netflix, jadi mesti ada produk turunan baru lagi ya...

Jujur, di awalnya memang kurang meyakinkan. Ada penurunan pada gambarnya dengan tarikan garis yang tidak sehalus atau berkarakter kuat seperti di karya terdahulu, dan dengan menampilkan tokoh utama dan situasi yang familiar pada awalnya, ada kesan sekedar mendaur ulang konsep lawas dalam kemasan nostalgia lebih mini (ditambah sebentar-sebentar ada sisipan kilas balik momen-momen dari komik yang pertama). Namun, pelan-pelan saya kembali diingatkan kenapa dunia Borderland-nya Haro Aso bisa jadi serial survival favorit saya. Tetap ada keseruan dari game psikologis mematikan sebagai pemicu plot, tempo penuturan yang cepat sekaligus mengeskalasi konflik secara realistis, dan penokohan yang tergali begitu efektif walau hanya dalam 2 volume.

Pada akhirnya, ini ibarat kado epilog bagi penggemar serial utamanya yang ingin nostalgia ngeri-ngeri-sedap (walau sebenarnya saya ingin lebih banyak melihat perkembangan Usagi di luar adegan 'tugas melahirkan'nya, haha... paling tidak Arisu bisa selamat lagi... mudah-mudahan kalau Aso-sensei mau bikin judul Borderland lagi, yang dikirim ke sana adalah tokoh baru dan bukan si Arisu lagi untuk ketiga kalinya. Kasihan boy, haha...). Kutipan paling berkesan buat saya:

this series is extremely different than the other sequel, Alice on Border Road. while that one had a huge emphasis on character development and left many unanswered questions (why is their borderland different than it was before?), this series is much shorter. there is still character development in the limited pages available as they compete in a game together, but there doesn’t seem to be anything that doesn’t make sense so far. it’s a much more faithful rendition of the original series, with so many similarities that there isn’t any room for confusion.

we are immediately thrust back into borderland with Arisu, but this time it looks exactly as it did 7 years ago during the meteorite incident. there is a lit up arena, they collect phones that input their ID, there are rules, a game, and a difficulty: nine of hearts.

this was a game that we never got to see occur in the original borderland series. the best part is not the game at all, but the backstories and actions of the players present.

i hope that this series provides some answers about the joker, but it’s too soon to tell.

อ่านสนุกพอสมควร ผู้เขียนยังใช้เทคนิคเดิมในการสร้างเรื่องและสร้างเกมในเรื่อง ชุดนี้ว่าด้วยเรื่องโอกาสในชีวิตและความเหลื่อมล้ำ คล้ายซีรีย์ชุดแรกแต่จับประเด็นได้เร็วและชัดเจนดี

หากไม่อ่านภาคแรกมาก่อนก็น่าจะอ่านเข้าใจแต่ไม่ “อิน” กับเรื่องเท่าไหร่

This mini 2 volume sequel manga is almost like an epilogue to the main story. Set 6 years later, Arisu now married and an expectant father, he finds himself back in Borderland for one final survival game, alien invasion.

I really enjoyed the main series and this was a fun little extra. Kinda wish we had more.
