When a search party trawling Salem Island find a girl’s body curled on the damp earth, the hunt for missing waitress Emma Jacobis grinds to a devastating halt. A box containing handwritten letters found under Emma’s bed is Charlie’s first lead. But the handwriting isn’t a match to the note left for Emma. With the help of her new assistant, a troubled girl eager to learn the ropes, Charlie’s only hope is to canvas the bar where Emma worked. There, she finds a woman with fear in her eyes and a terrifying story to tell about an encounter with a dangerous stranger. Is someone in this small town targeting vulnerable girls as prey?
Certain she’s found a twisted killer’s hunting ground, and with time running out before he strikes again, Charlie has no choice but to use her new assistant as bait to lure him out into the open. But when a scream pierces through the night, will Charlie survive the consequences? She has to, or there’s no knowing how many more innocent girls will die…
Watch Her Sleep by L.T. Vargus and Tim McBain is a suspenseful mystery with strong female characters. Watch Her Sleep is the third book in the Detective Charlotte Winters series. This book can be read as a standalone, but parts of the previous books are revealed. I recommend reading the whole series. All of my favorite characters returned in Watch Her Sleep. Charlie is strong and determined to solve the case. The case she is working on is a woman that is being stalked. Charlie is reckless at times. Paige, Charlie’s assistant starts working in the field rather than just working on her computer. Zoe is back to help and joke around with Charlie. I was glad that Will returned in this book. Will is looking for forgiveness. The book grabbed my attention from the first page with action and suspense throughout. The story is told from Charlie, the victim, and the perpetrator’s perspectives. I loved the different viewpoints. This was my favorite book yet in the series and the ending had me very stressed out. I love when I can’t figure out the ending, and this one I only figured out in the last few chapters but was still wondering what would happen next. I recommend Watch Her Sleep to anyone that likes suspenseful mysteries.
Thank you Bookouture and NetGaley for Watch Her Sleep.
“Not bad for a last-minute costume,” she said. “I guess it’s alright,” Allie said with a sigh. “A little underwhelming in the bust department, if you ask me. You only have so many good boob years left, Charlie. You really should try to make the most of it.”
My Review:
I was sucked right into this intense, intriguing, and twisted tale. I was feverishly gripping my Kindle from beginning to end. This missive was ingeniously plotted, thrummed with tension, and was rather gruesome and chilling while oddly also wicked funny and packed with the dark wit and clever snark I’ve come to expect from this dynamic duo of raconteurs.
This sly pair of authors has uncanny word wizardry. Their writing style is of an unusual craft with emotive and evocative details that engage all the senses and pull vivid imagery to mind. I could hear the characters’ labored breaths, see through their eyes, and absorbed their agitation, excitement, and exhaustion. Each scene was complete and kept the film reel scrolling smoothly through my rapidly sparking gray matter. I wanted to savor each word yet I couldn’t read fast enough to keep up with all the action.
The storylines were eventful and full of divinely riveting twists that kept me on edge yet there was also frequent smirking at the sardonic humor, that is, when I wasn’t anxiously gnawing at my cuticles. These two have mad skills!
I requested this book because a friend recommended it and said you didn't need to read the first two books in the series to follow along. I disagree, and was kind of annoyed throughout the book by all the references to stuff that had happened in other books (especially with a love interest). I also really disliked reading through the villain's eyes and felt that he was written badly. He was written to be creepy, sociopathic, misogynistic, cruel and disgusting, and then
The characters also didn't read as real to me, though I did like that most of the women were written as tougher than in most of these kinds of books.
The main character has constant conversations with her dead twin sister in her head, and that felt gimmicky and annoying to me. Her sister's voice is kind of bratty and I'm not sure why we need the hero to have this constant high school level dialog going on while doing things like trying to save women from murder. I think people who have read the first two books might feel some sort of emotional connection to the sister (who's been missing/dead for decades, I believe, so you didn't know her in earlier books either). It also set the whole book up as a sort of "did this person kill her sister too?" kind of thing, which felt gimmicky too.
All in all it was a good read but I'd recommend going through the series from the start.
Smut level -- very low. Cussing -- very low. Violence -- high. Sexual assault/torture -- no. Suspense -- high. Realism -- medium. Likeable characters -- medium-high.
Watch Her Sleep is the third instalment in the Private Investigator Charlotte ”Charlie” Winters series, set in and around Salem Island, Michigan. The prologue opens with a woman being watched as she undresses in her bedroom as her stalker peeks over the window sill. He had stood there that many times that he had flattened the patch of grass beneath him. Tonight, he said to himself, is the night that looking will turn into touching. Tampering with a locked sliding door using a screwdriver he manages to open it with consummate ease. So many times he has let himself in this way. Violated her space this way. And somehow the thrill of it never diminishes. Usually, he came when she wasn’t home and a few times when she was asleep and he would watch her. Picked through her things. Sprawled naked in her bed while she was away. Knowing that he would touch her makes it different entirely. She’ll have no idea he's there until it's too late. All of a sudden a car swerves into the driveway and there's a knock at the door. He’s disappointed, yes, but he’s still somehow empowered to be here. Listening. Watching. Without anyone seeing, without anyone knowing. But his plans for that evening have been smashed to smithereens. Meanwhile, elsewhere, PI Charlie Winters has settled nicely into her role at her Uncle Frank’s firm A1 Investigations. Emma Jacobis, a waitress at The Laughing Raven bar, visits her and tells her that she is being tailed and that it appeared as though someone has been in her apartment when she wasn't present; she had even had a drawing of herself left by this creepy stalker inside her locked car. Charlie notices she's trembling and terrified, and Emma informs her that she is desperately seeking her help as the police cannot proactively do anything until a crime has been committed leaving her to deal with an obsessive psychopath on her own.
Charlie decides to take the case immediately as it reminds her very much of her twin sister, Allie’s, disappearance almost twenty years ago, and she is determined to provide the assistance Emma is looking for; the assistance her sister never got. They go through the details of her life trying to pinpoint those who warrant investigation, including her ex-boyfriend Tyler Nelson, a student at UCLA. She is warned not to go back to her apartment while Charlie puts up hidden cameras to try and catch the guy responsible, but she makes the deadly mistake of going home to pack some essentials, where the stalker is waiting knowing he may not have much time left, he leaps into action. Charlie soon finds Emma is missing and a search party is arranged. It isn't long before her body is discovered in a thicket and her throat had a deep gash running from ear to ear. Then when another girl also vanishes the investigation kicks into high gear. Can they stop this monster from killing again? This is a scintillating and enthralling thriller/procedural from the very first paragraph and it's straightforward and linear narrative makes it easier to immerse yourself in the chilling story. There is a plethora of twisty surprises, intrigue, drama and plenty of quick-moving action to keep you riveted throughout. It's told primarily from Charlie’s perspective, but there are also chapters dedicated to the unknown killer and his warped mindset. Charlie is such a relatable, likeable and believable protagonist who aims to right the wrongs of her sister’s case by assisting women who really need someone on their side. As in past instalments, Allie has some biting, snarky and darkly amusing things to say to her sister and that adds a light-hearted touch to proceedings. The climax was a compulsive and explosive showdown between the police and the murderer and the perfect way to conclude this must-read thrill ride. Highly recommended.
Ok, I feel like I should tell you that when I requested this book from Publisher I did not realise that it is in fact book three in a series. My bad, I know. But since I received it, I felt like it's only fair to give it a try, read it and try to make the best of it. To my surprise it was written in such a way that even though you're aware that things happened before that are still revelavent to the story, it's all so well explained that you have general idea of the events without being crushed by info dump. I'd like to applaude the authors here, because that really requires skills.
I really liked Charlie, the protagonist, and the other characters. The plot is pretty basic - and by all means I'm not saying it's a bad thing. I actually appreciated the fact that there was no layer upon layer upon another layer of intrigues as it's very popular in thrillers these days. My only problem was with the fact who the stalker turned out to be. I'm not really happy with
The most important thing about this book is that IT IS CREEPY. From the beginning I felt uneasy reading it, because there is nothing more terryfying than someone slatking you, watching you when you're not aware, having all these thoughts you're meant to be because you randomly smiled at him. It's terryfying to know someone could just creep into your house in the middle of the night with you being none the wiser.
But the most terryfying thing is the thought that the police will do absolutely nothing until you get killed. And that's a sad sad fact. Stalking is a serious crime, a serious thing that's being brushed off by police all over the world. They say "oh they just have a crush on you", "you should be flattered", "it's because you're pretty", "they'll get over it", "they sent you flowers and you're complaining", "have you encourages them", "it's nothing". Until someone ends up dead.
I received a copy from the Publisher in an exchange for an honest review
Thank you Bookouture / Netgalley for the gifted copy.
This is the third book in L.T. Vargus and Tim McBain's new series and it was really good! I love crime thriller series and this is proving to be a fun, thrilling series to read.
Once again we have a fast-paced, suspense-filled read that kept me flipping the pages from start to finish. I was completely engaged right from the start and the short chapters give this one that 'just one more chapter' mentality. Of course, my favorite aspect of this series remains to be the voice that Charlie hears in her head. It happened in the first book and it continued to happened throughout this latest installment. I love this - I find it to be a unique part of the story. It is both humorous at times as well as quite telling in regards to Charlie as a character. I do wonder if this is ever really going to be explored in depth...why does she hear the voice at certain times and then at other times there is radio silence???
While this book can be read as a stand-alone, I do feel it's best to read the series in order. There are threads that are carried through and I really do feel that the character development that has happened over the course of the series really gives you a better feel for who Charlie is. But, if this is the first book you are picking up, perhaps it will entice you to pick up the other two after.
This book has such a great, creepy feel to it. A stalker that haunts their prey, someone watching and waiting. I love books like this and I love that we get the stalker's point of view from time to time. Of course I was trying to figure out if I could guess the stalker/killer's identity before the final reveal and I did...right before it was revealed. Not much of a lead time there, but it's all good. This one really kept me on my toes and I loved how it all plays out in the end.
This writing duo is fantastic. They push the envelop, they take chances and they give an all-out gripping, exciting read. I am so excited to see what comes next for Charlie...and I really hope that at some point, we get some closure on her sister's murder that happened 20 years ago.
I have enjoyed the Charlie Winters stories! I have enjoyed all the others,as well. The Violet and Lowshack series. I also loved the Awake in the Dark series. If you guys keep writing I will keep reading. Thank you for the work you do, and hours of pleasure I derive during Covid cabin fever.
When a young woman comes into her office believing she's being watched, Charlie Winters knows she can't turn her away. Still deeply affected by the disappearance of her own sister years earlier, Charlie can't help but wonder if things might have turned out differently if Allie had been able to reach out for help. But when the worst happens and Emma ends up dead, Charlie discovers that this story has deeper, more sinister roots than anyone could have imagined. Before long, she finds herself pulled into a killer's dangerous game and will stop at nothing to find the truth before it's too late.
Watch Her Sleep is incredibly eerie from page one. L.T. Vargus and Tim McBain repeatedly provide glimpses into a stalker's unstable mind. At the same time, the witty comments scattered throughout the novel provide some comic relief: "Excuse me, ma'am," a familiar voice said. "That particular breed of bird is illegal inside the city limits without proper documentation." (after being flipped off).
I was provided with a copy of this novel by NetGalley for review and have already pre-ordered a copy through Kobo!

Private Investigator Charlotte (Charlie) Winters never expected to be returning home to Salem Island, Michigan, but she came back to look after her uncle’s PI business, A1 Investigations, after he became ill. When Emma Jacobis, a waitress at The Laughing Raven bar, requests her help believing that she is being watched and clutching a threatening note with a drawing of herself on the front, Charlie is keen to help in any way she can. As Charlie and Emma try to pinpoint those who might warrant investigation, including Emma's ex-boyfriend Tyler Nelson, a student at UCLA, Charlie's warning to Emma not to go back to her apartment before Charlie can install hidden cameras goes unheeded. Emma returns home to pack some essentials, and soon after, Charlie finds that Emma is missing and a search party is arranged. Emma's body is discovered in a thicket, a deep gash at her throat with flies buzzing around the wound. When another girl also vanishes the investigation steps up in its intensity.
Charlie's own sister, Allie, was abducted from the small town when they were teenagers and ever since Charlie has heard her sister's voice in her head. Charlie is determined to grab the opportunity to bring about justice even if it means putting herself in grave danger.
In this third book of an exciting series by LT Vargus and Tim McBain, I continue to connect with their combined writing style and I liked the sharp dialogue throughout. As in the other instalments, acerbic Allie has some biting and darkly amusing things to say to Charlie, adding a lighter touch to the proceedings and occurrences. I like Charlie’s character who's smart, a bit of a loner and is a great lead. The plot is well thought-out and I enjoyed the progression to the surprising, action-packed, explosive finale. This novel - Watch Her Sleep - was as good as the first two in the series - First Girl Gone and Girl Under Water. Entertaining and attention-grabbing throughout, it will be extremely interesting to see what LT Vargus and Tim McBain have in store for Charlie in the next instalment. Overall, a fantastic continuation of a very promising series that I have no hesitation in recommending.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Bookouture via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Watch Her Sleep, the third novel to feature PI Charlie Winters, set on Salem Island, Michigan.
Emma Jacobis comes to Charlie for help, believing that she is being stalked. She thinks someone has been in her house and has left her an intimate picture of herself sleeping. Charlie believes her, but before she can act Emma disappears and is found dead a short time later. When Olivia comes forward with a strange tale of abduction Charlie is sure she is hunting a predator.
I enjoyed Watch Her Sleep which is what I call a straightforward hunt novel, in that it focuses on finding a killer and moves forward in linear fashion. It has one major twist but generally follows the formula of investigate until the options narrow.
The novel is mostly told from Charlie’s point of view with the unnamed killer making an appearance to describe some of his actions and explain his mindset. I didn’t find this latter particularly convincing but there have been enough articles about it in recent years to assure me that it’s real. The plot comprises of Charlie’s investigation and culminates in a violent showdown with the killer. The novel is well conceived but lacks the oomph of a compulsive read. I found it easy to put down.
Who knew that Charlie was such a mean fighter? I didn’t associate her with these skills but she’s certainly kick ass. Otherwise she’s still dithering about a relationship with Will and arguing with her dead twin sister, Ally. Ally normally gets the best lines with dark humour but she’s rather subdued in this novel.
Watch Her Sleep is an easy way to pass a few hours. 3.5*
First, I want to thank L.T. Vargas, Tim McBain, Bookouture and NetGalley for providing me with this book so I may bring you this review.
Watch Her Sleep by L.T. Vargas and Tim McBain is my ultimate favorite book in the Detective Charlotte Winters Series. If you have not read the first two in the series First Girl Gone or Girl Under Water you must!! Make sure you add this one to your must read pile! This dynamic writing duo keeps engaging its readers with mind-bending and heart-stopping reads!
Kudos to the graphic artists who came up with the graphics for Watch Her Sleep. I loved the pictures of the falling leaves in all different colors. It was picturesque!
Straight away this story catches your attention with how creepy and stalkerish this character is. L.T. And Tim takes you into this sick character's head and they show you how twisted his mental state is. The details they put into this scene is intense and you feel like you are watching him watching her.
This book is extremely fast paced and so fascinating you just can't put it down!
If you read the other two books you will see familiar faces like Detective Charlotte Winters and hear other names you may recognize.
Putting myself into Emma’s shoes I too would be scared! She was being stalked by some mad man! The things he did and how he thought just made me cringe!
L.T. And Tim did a fantastic job writing some graphic scenes for the book.
This is one book that NetFlix needs to make into a series! I would totally binge watch it!
Watch Her Sleep by L.T. Vargus & Tim McBain Detective Charlotte Winters #3
Fast-paced and intense from beginning to end – this book captured my interest immediately and did not kept me focused till the bitter end. Great addition to the series!
What I liked: * Charlie: complicated, conflicted, intelligent, focused, has conversations with her deceased twin, strong, lethal when necessary. * Easy to read. * Pacing * That it seemed possible. * The suspense building. * Wondering about Will Crawford and what his role will be in the series * That it was case-oriented with only a snippet about romance. * References to people in previous stories and wanting to see more of them: Zoe, Paige, Frank, Will * That the baddie was eventually dealt with.
What I didn’t like * The baddie – someone it was easy to dislike and wish dealt with. * Knowing that such things do happen in real life. * A comment – not a dislike – this is a series better read in order as some characters that are major players in Charlie’s life just appear in this book without much reference to their pasts and how they are important to her.
Did I enjoy this book? Yes Would I read more in this series? I believe I would.
I love this series as all the books are always gripping and highly entertaining. It’s an excellent crime thriller that features a quirky and strong MC, Charlotte, and I love how she chats with her missing twin and how strong she is. There’s always plenty of humor and this one of the reason why I love it so much. This is the most disturbing book in the series as it talks about a stalker who kills his victims and we read his POV and have a glimpse of his distorted mind. The book starts with a bang, a creepy scenes, and the killer and one of the victims are introduced. I was hooked since I read this scene and the tightly knitted and fast paced plot kept me hooked. It’s an excellent story, full of twists and turns, and I was always on the edge because there is a constant suspense that makes you turn pages as fast as you can. The character development and the descriptions are as good as usual, the mystery is solid and I was happy to catch up with the characters. I can’t wait to read the next story, this one is highly recommended. Many thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
Third book in the Charlotte Winters series. Emma comes to Charlie because she thinks she is being stalked. Nothing more creepy than thinking someone is watching you while you sleep. When Emma ends up dead, Charlie, Paige, Uncle Frank and cop Zoe are committed to finding the killer. A simple plot with lots of action and creepiness along the way. And we can't forget Ally's voice in Charlie's mind as well. I'm ready for some more info on what happened to her all those years ago. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
Thanks to netgalley, the authors and Bookouture for the arc.
Absolutely brilliant. Thrilling from start to finish. This was an addictive, suspenseful, great read which I just could not put down. One of the best series out there. Read this one!
Charlie Winters is absolutely my current favorite heroine. Especially with her dead sister in her head. I love all of the recurring characters in the series. Even though things did get a lot more dicey for Charlie in this third book than the previous two it looks like it might lead to a little romance in the future. Not a bad thing at all. Vargus and McBain never disappoint.
What can I say that hasn't been said by fans of L.T. Vargus/Tim McBain? I was shaking in my boots! My fingers were numb from holding on too tightly to my Kindle. As much as I needed to take a break from reading, the book just wouldn't let me go. It felt like claws gripping my shoulders and whispering, "don't let go, read on"! Yikes! I was so engrossed in the story that when my cat jumped on my lap, I literally jumped!
I love Charlie because she's evolved into a bad ass! Wouldn't it be awesome to get Darger and Charlie together just once?
L.T. Vargus/Tim McBain are in the house! Yoohoo! Thank you #NetGalley for the AC! Loved it!
I was kinda hoping we'd find out what happened to allie but no such luck. I was suspicious of everyone in this book. Brilliant story. Charlie kicking ass as usual.
Full disclosure - I was provided an advanced reader’s copy of this book by the authors but have voluntarily provided a review. Watch Her Sleep is scheduled for a March 18,2021 release
He knows when you are sleeping....
Charlotte Winters thought she knew every nook and cranny of Salem Island. After all, it is where she grew up, where she runs her private investigator’s office and eighteen years ago, it is where she assisted with searching for her sister when she went missing. When a waitress for a local watering hole shows up requesting her assistance with tracking down a potential stalker, Charlie takes the case but soon finds herself part of the search party when she also goes missing. With this case hitting too close to home and bringing back painful memories of her twin Allie, Charlie, and her team work with the police to try to identify and stop the stalker before another girl turns up dead.
Watch Her Sleep is the third in the Detective Charlotte Winters series of novels by author duo Tim McBain and LT Vargus. Having not previously read the first two books in the series, this was my first introduction to this new cast of characters and I was happy to see that the books, while part of an overall series, can also be read as stand-alone offerings. From the very beginning, the story is intense and will grab your attention. I really love how McBain and Vargus get into the psyche of the villain so the reader can see the world through their eyes, With Watch Her Sleep, however, they took this one step further and also provided Charlie with her own running inner documentary in the form of her deceased twin. I thought this was a really unique element that I don’t think I have ever encountered previously and even though it was just the “voices in her head”, I really felt that Allie was a living breathing character in the story. This story, while fast-paced, wasn’t so fast that the reader got lost. The cast of characters was such that the identity of the villain was not known until such a time that I had already suspected and eliminated quite a few others. As the story built to its climax, I found myself not wanting to put the book down – even to the point of waking up in the wee hours of the night to continue reading because I could not leave the characters hanging.
If you are already an established fan of McBain and Vargus, this new series definitely lives up to the quality of storytelling, sinister villains, and mind-blowing plot twists that you have most likely become accustomed to. After having read Watch Her Sleep, I promptly backfilled my library with the first two books in the series “First Girl Gone” and “Girl Under Water” as I have no doubt they will be every bit at gripping as this newest offering. Hopefully, once book Four is released I will be completely caught up with the previous books and will be able to enjoy the series going more fully forward.
I really like Charlie, there is something about her that stands out. I’m ready to dive deeper into why she keeps manifesting her dead sister Allie. I can’t put my finger on it. Is she seeing her or just having conversations. It’s weird how she can’t when she’s in danger. I’m really looking forward to seeing what’s to come. There’s just something about this series that reels me in.
This third Charlotte Winters story had me riding an emotional rollercoaster, along with a few grins and giggles, there was a lot more anxiety/fear, and in some cases a good bit of terror interspersed with outright anger. To avoid any spoilers, I won’t share any details other than to say Lex and Tim have done it again, crafted a story that is not only action and intrigue filled, but also provides a bit of relief at just the right times. I thought I could clearly see how this story was going to play out only to soon see the masters of misdirection had done it to me once again just as they have innumerable times in all their previous stories – well played! If you are a Charlotte (Charlie) Winters fan than grab a copy and settle in for a harrowing tale. If you aren’t familiar with this series, you really should grab a copy of First Girl Cone and get started because I can guarantee you will get hooked. I received an Advance Reader Copy and chose to provide this review.
Watch Her Sleep is the third book in the Charlotte Winters series. Charlie is simply my favorite PI. I like how well she works with her Assistant, Paige and cop friend, Zoe. In this installment, a young woman seeks Charlie’s assistance as she believes that she is being stalked. The young woman, Emma, has tried to get help from the police but as usual, the police cannot do much unless there is proof that a crime has been committed. However, Charlie sees the seriousness of the issue and advises Emma to stay away from her house. Emma decided to quickly rush to her place to pick a few things before going to a friend’s. That turns out to be a fatal mistake.
This story has such a creepy vibe to it. The stalking made my skin crawl. It definitely had me looking over my shoulder and once outside my bedroom window though I am on my third floor. Can you imagine someone watching you sleep? I don’t care if it’s my partner or child, I’d still freak out if I found one of them watching me as I sleep. Now imagine a stranger watching you. Yikes!
This is such an engrossing, masterfully written story. I enjoyed the different POVs and the fact that the authors decided to amp -up the creepiness by including the stalker’s voice. I can’t wait to read the fourth book in this series.
Would I read more of this series? Yes , in fact I have book one to read even though I've already read books 2 and this one.
Would I read more by this author? Yes
First of I want to say a huge thank you to the publisher Bookouture, the authors L.T. Vargus & Tim McBain , and to NetGalley for inviting me to join the blog tour for this book as well as letting me read and review it. What can I say that will make you want to pick this up to read, I could say that its so neither of the two books I've read in this series has let me down or had been a disappointment at all , just like book 2, it had me hooked on what was going on and it made me thing at times that someone was watching me ( but that could if just been me because I was reading it in the middle of the night while everyone else was a in bed). As well as had me on edge and jumpy every time I heard a noise out side my bedroom window and I literally jumped with out of my skin when one of my dogs came and jumped on my bed that's how much I was into the story itself. And though out all of it I kept asking myself who was going to be the next victim and would the watcher ( as I called him ) be stopped in time. So after reading this I hope you decide to give this a try.
Review for 'Watch Her Sleep' by LT Vargus and Tim McBain.
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous
Publication date 18th March 2021.
This is the second book I have read by these authors and is the third book in their 'Detective Charlie Winters' series. I have previously read 'First Girl Gone' which I would also highly recommend and is also the first book in the 'Detective Charlie Winters' series. Although this book is third in a series it can also be read as a standalone.
I was originally drawn to this book by its beautiful eye catching cover and its intriguing synopsis. I have also previously read 'First Girl Gone' ' written by L. T Vargus and Tim Mcbain and LOVED it so I'm hoping this will be just as good. The synopsis stated that fans of Kendra Elliot and others will be left reeling after reading in one sitting. I am a fan of Kendra's books so am interested to see if it will live up to this statement. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).
This novel consists of a prologue, 88 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short to medium to long in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is based in the USA 🇺🇸.
This book is written in third person perspective with the protagonist being Detective Charlie Winters. The benefits of third person perspective with multiple protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.
This book is very well written and I think the writing style had improved since the first book in this series, although I enjoyed that I feel you can see the improvement made in this one. The descriptions are vivid and the environment perfect for the storyline. The cover and synopsis worked well with the plot.
The storyline is filled with suspense and tension from the very first page and is fast paced throughout. I love that this series is based on a private investigator as it gives a different outlook to typical police procedural. I was completely absorbed throughout and there was plenty of action and mystery to keep me addicted. An absolutely gripping and unputdownable crime thriller. I enjoyed the surprising twists and although I worked out the killer at about 75% I didn't have a clue who it was before that.
Although his book is part of a series it can easily be read as a standalone with no difficulty at all and any references to previous cases are explained in jist the right amount of detail.
I really enjoyed meeting all the characters again especially Charlie. It is always a bonus when there is a strong female lead with a great personality. I also enjoyed meeting Frank, Paige and Zoe as well as the lovely Will again and I look forward to meeting them again in the next novel. I was intrigued by the chapters from the Killers perspective as it shows why he is doing what he is and you get to see "behind the scenes" so to say. I love the unique fact that we also get the additional script from Charlie's sister, although she is dead, via Charlie and I think the authors have done a great job on this as it can't have been easy. Allie has her own unique personality and I love her sense of humour.
Another success from LT Vargus and Tim McBain and I look forward to reading the next book in this gripping and addictive series.
Overall another gripping and addictive book in this suspense filled addictive series.
Genres covered in this novel include Crime, Thriller, Murder and Mystery amongst others.

This review was originally posted on Star Crossed Reviews thank you to Bookouture for my copy of this book via Netgalley and for letting me take part in this tour. This is the third book in this series but it can be read as a standalone. I really enjoyed the first two books so I would recommend reading them.
Charlie Winters is an excellent PI and she is not afraid to put herself in danger, time and time again. She is very protective of those that she loves but is also very lonely. Charlie like many that have suffered trauma has so many walls around her that its a real struggle for anyone to get in.
This case is beyond creepy, especially with what has been happening in the news recently. This case really brought it all home for me. I am very glad I don't live alone because the thought of someone watching me while I sleep gives me the shivers. This whole book makes you feel very tense and uneasy. I was so concerned and stressed for all of the characters (more so the female ones) mainly because the killer seemed to have no conscience and just believed everything belonged to him. This book also highlighted the lack of help that Emma got from the police. It showed all the red tape that there is and all the bureaucracy that goes on.
This book is very well written and kept me on the edge of my seat. It's addicitive, gripping and did I mention creepy? I'm very much looking forward to the next book!
Charlie Winters is well settled in her new role as a successful private investigator at her Uncle Frank's agency on Salem Island. It definitely helps that Frank has a very good working relationship with the local police department and her best friend Zoe also works for them.
When Charlie is visited by Emma Jacobis who is almost sure she's being stalked the tale she tells worries the young investigator sufficiently that she takes the case immediately. As the fear becomes all too real and one of Charlie’s close friends also comes to the attention of the unknown predator the danger strikes far closer to home than anyone could have imagined.
This is the third book in this series and is a very enjoyable read. All the main protagonists seem to have found their own place in Charlie’s universe now and I even coped with Charlie’s sister Allie chatting to her from beyond the grave without any adverse effects!
The person responsible for the chilling crimes tells their tale in the first person which adds a creepy foreboding to everything which happens. It also gives the reader an advantage over Charlie as we are placed one step ahead of her in the investigation.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the opinions expressed are my own. This is a good book to relax and get lost in with an easily relatable main protagonist.
A young woman arrives at private investigator Charlie Winters' office. She fears she is being stalked, that someone has been in her home. Charlie begins her investigation but then Emma's body is discovered and Charlie becomes even more determined to avenge her and protect other women.. Watch Her Sleep is the third book to feature PI Charlotte Winters (I have reviewed First Girl Gone and Girl Under Water). Her uncle is in remission from cancer, she has an enthusiastic new assistant. Oh, and her dead sister with a fiery wit keeps her company! Charlie is such an interesting character as she coexists with her murdered twin Allie. Allie adds an extra dimension to the series which I really enjoy. The goodnatured ribbing between siblings feels very realistic. Charlie is negotiating being a PI, a boss, a niece, a solo twin, a friend to cop Zoe and there is also the potential for romance. She grew up in the town so there are memories and relationships which feed into the narrative at various points. The book is written in the third person, sometimes showing us the detectives and sometimes the killer. The chapters are short which drives the plot onwards and makes us keep reading (just one more chapter...) The final quarter of the book is high in drama and action but I'll give no spoilers! I really enjoy the quirkiness to this series which makes each crime thriller book unique. I find the style of writing engaging and the mystery of the killer's identity kept me intrigued until the end. Watch Her Sleep is a great new story for Charlie and her team.
