I'm so relieved!!! I was scared I wouldn't like this because I wasn't a fan of the previous 2 volumes, but this was such a satisfying conclusion! I'm glad I got to read this manga by one of my favourite artists, I remember watching the anime as a teenager but I'm not sure I ever read the manga. Well now I have! Can't wait to read every single one of Arina Tanemura's works, I love her artwork so so so much! And the story of this one was heartbreaking but so beautiful and deep! I was honestly surprised that such deep topics were discussed in a "light" shojo manga. Im so happy I ended up loving this 🥰

You can't help but think you're headed for some awful heartbreak in this issue. The setup has been there all along. So, with this in mind, I really braced myself for the ending. After all, all Micky had ever wanted was to die. Right?

Maybe not. Things twist and turn, changing all the time. Things happened which were not what I expected. And I loved it, well-satisfied as I turned the last page. Beautiful! They pulled it off after all!

Read the whole series again, these were among the first Mangas I ever bought when I was around 12/13...Very cheesy at times and we should not think too much about the protagonist's age, but some moments actually made me emotional and it has some very sad storylines. Now I've got the songs stuck in my head^^

Lord. I wish I could see what other people did. This review is for the series as a whole, this last volume wasn't that bad. But this...

This is not a good series.

TLDR: This series doesn't hold up. It's poorly written and edited, and involves inappropriately-aged romances. However, the overall story has potential, and the characters develop. I'd love to see a rewrite/remake of this, with older protagonists, a clearer set up of the shinigamiverse, and more fleshed out subplots and pacing.

The cons:
1. All of the characters look the same, so when people appear, i.e. Hikari, I have no idea how she got there, because she looks like Oshige, who looks like the other women, and the guys. This, unfortunately is really common with shoujo authors of that time. I'm looking at y(0)uu watase.

2. Creepy underaged love. I'll let the unrealistically adult behavior for children go, because that's just all manga really. But we have Eichi forcing a kiss on a six year old, that he loved since she was three. Then we have Takuto, who, let me see. Because the timeline is so hazy, killed himself sometime after Mitsuki's dad died? And he was fourteen when he joined their group. Presumably was there for a couple of years. And then at the end, it was revealed he wasn't really dead. He was in a coma. So there isn't the excuse of a time warp. Which means, he is at best early 20s, dating a 12 year old.

3. The universe makes no sense. Shinigamis are there because they killed themselves, because the first human who died. Ever. Killed herself, and somehow saw a human when she became a shinigami? A term that she coined, and the people of the underworld just pledged feality to her because??? Right. Oh but they aren't shinigami. They're angels. Memories are kept in vials that shinigami can drink to remember their past, but no wait, they can't remember their past, or they disappear. Mitsuki was supposed to die, but Eichi is a ghost, which made her see Takuto and Meroko, which took her off the list. Eichi became a super ghost at the end? Why did he become a ghost? Is his soul at rest now because she sang a song?

4. The pacing and editing in this is just insane. New characters show up, that Mitsuki just knows. It jumps around between past and present, and storylines, and romances, because everybody loves each other. Which is fine, I like lots of couples! But this just made it hard to follow the transitions. I mean. Fuzuki's husband?? Seijyro? Just shows up at the end out of nowhere. Let's also not forget Mitsuki was in an orphanage, and then just was with her grandmother? When? How old was she? Why did Fuzuki decide to take her?

Pros:
1. The costumes are great. I loved them as a teen, still love them now. Arina Tanemura excels at outfit design.
2. There is character development! The characters learn, and grow, and become more rounded.
3. Meroko and Fuzuki's relationship was the best subplot, along with Izumi's backstory. They could have a story all their own.
4. The art is cute. I had trouble telling people apart, but the art is very cute.

This final volume does a good job answering the real final question- what will happen to Mitsuki? Thankfully, all the various couples are wrapped up fairly well too.

The last 4-5 pages of the last chapter are the most haunting and sweetly melancholy moments of the whole series. They sum up and move forward on the entire theme of the series. It is amazing and tearjerking.

There are many extra "misc" sort of pages toward the end. Some of them are little stories that are funny and worth reading but the notes from the various staff members can be a bit long-winded (don't stop reading though, there is one more micro-chapter after that about Meroko and Takuto.) I think some will be disappointed by how the series is almost completely done halfway through the book. On the other hand, I really like most of the misc pages and you don't typically get those with fan translations. It's worth it to buy Viz's editions.

To touch upon the art for a minute, the quality of the art is some of the best out there. It's really a class above so many others much in the way CLAMP art often is. I think the key is in how many people are involved. There were lots of people involved with adding special touches and detail to every scene.

In one of the random notes, Arina mentions something along the lines of there being a sense of achievement in finally finishing the series.. but also sorrow. I definitely felt sad reading those last chapters.

Sigh... I mean, really Teresa? Did you honestly think it would have ended even slightly unhappily?

I enjoy shojo manga... really I do. Otherwise I wouldn't read it. However, I'd like to think that even a shojo manga that has a storyline that really doesn't even start to lead to a happy ending can have a slightly unhappy ending. As this series got closer and closer to volume 7, I really thought Tanemura-san wouldn't let me down this time. I knew she was going to have a happy ending, but I figured there would be costs to get there. The way she was talking about it, I had no doubts.

Unfortunately she failed to deliver. Everything was happy without anything having to be given up. In fact, the ending was so happy, it was almost ridiculous. It really felt like all the struggle and hardships the characters faced were for absolutely nothing because somehow, magically, everything worked out and was fixed for them. When people have life threatening illnesses, it just shouldn't work out that way.

So I'm disappointed. Which is a bummer because I did enjoy this series and it was pretty emotional. But this ending was just too ridiculous. Everything was just too easy and all the big scary stuff literally just went away.

At least I can say this series was way better than The Gentlemen's Alliance.

This story overall had a generally nice finish, but with Mitsuki only being 15... I'm still uncomfortable with it. I'm happy for all the other resolved love stories though. Those all had great endings too.

I was kind of surprised, the manga itself is only half the book. So it was VERY short.

The plot fell together nicely, so that was well planned and nice to understand finally. I would love to see something like this that doesn't involve a child. Or doesn't have a romance aspect.

So after spending a month or two watching the anime I sat down yesterday to read the manga. Next thing I knew it was 2:30 in the morning.

I love the art style of this series, it's elegant and delicate while also managing intensity--and the detail wows me page after page. I wish I were that talented, my goodness. I knew the plot differed from the animated series before I read it (I investigated Full Moon per recommendation of a friend that loved it growing up) and I'm kind of glad it was. I like surprises, reading the same thing verbatim isn't terribly exciting. I also knew it was darker than the show but wow some of the backstories and reveals really stuck with me.

I think I prefer certain interpretations in the anime: not sure if that's because I watched it first or because there's only so much self-loathing in a character I can handle, especially one Mitsuki's age. She is too young to want to die. Cancer or no. (On that note I really wasn't a fan of the romantic relationships in either interpretation with the exception of Meroko's feelings for Takuto and Keiji/Ooshige.) The ending scene with Eichi was a nice emotional addition though--really the way the author incorporated him in general into the story kept him more involved than the anime's interpretation.

I also like that the ending in both series featured the song "Smile." It's pretty cool to see an author's songs/poems receive a real voice. I like that both series' were different while at the same time maintaining some similarities. Watching the anime first made me appreciate the characters and their histories more in the manga, and kept more aware of certain characters with smaller roles (like Hazuki and Tanaka.) And I really love--in both versions--the author's take on the afterlife. It's no secret I find death and all that may or may not follow fascinate me in fiction.

Overall, if you read this series you should know what you're getting into, especially as an adult. There's a lot to be appreciated here but also several things that can (and in my case did) unsettle you, looking through it with a greater understanding of the world.

Ugh. Curse you, deus ex machina. Once again you reared your ugly head, and with it, any hopes for a decent ending for this series. In addition to the ending straight out of left field, the fact that the last volume had about little more than half the normal volume content, with the rest filled with filler makes this for a very disappointing volume.

I don't know if the author lost control of the pace of the story, or if 'Full Moon o Sagashite' was given a last minute cut that precluded a more satisfying ending, but in the end, the results were a big disappointment, for what has been a somewhat entertaining series that focused on such unusual topics, such as suicide, the hearafter, and second chances.

With the deus ex machina, all the sacrifices the character made in the series ended up feeling moot, as if all their dramatic weight just evaporated under the ridiculous circumstances of an unbelievable happy ending for everybody.

Next time I need an incomprehensible rational as an endpoint explanation for it all, instead of the usual soap opera, all I need to do is think of 'Full Moon o Sagashite' again.

This review is for the whole story. Tanemura- sensei will always be my favorite manga-ka and Full Moon will always be my favorite work. I watched the anime first, which I loved, so I decided to give the manga a go. I am so glad I did. I even wondered why didn't the anime followed the plot of the manga. What I love about full moon is that the story starts really cute, but then BAM!!! Dark twist!! I just love that and Full Moon was a roller coaster of emotions for me. The art is beautiful! As expected from Tanemura-sensei and this why her works are really hard to turn into an anime. If you haven't read this manga, What are you waiting for? Hurry up and start reading! Now!

There were some good points in this series, and I really liked the art style, but the overall verdict was... meh. Weird relationship dynamics, a Mary Sue for an MC, random goofs and filler, and a huge scoop of deus ex machina to wrap everything up.

I don't know why I keep trying to finish mangas from years if not decades ago - I was probably better off with the childhood memories of this being good, than finding out the hard way that this series didn't age well at all. Oh well. I guess that's what happens when you've greatly outgrown the target audience...

Great end. Really cute.

But the last chapter was kinda confusing. And who Jonathan really was. I kinda missed out on that too.

But I loved to see Mitsuki and Takuto and all the other sweet couples happy.

But Eichi... This last scene made me so sad. I want him to be happy too. To not be alone anymore...

All in all it was really enjoyable but not as good as Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne

The ending hit just the right, slightly bittersweet note. Lovely art throughout, of course. Slightly irritating that almost half of the last volume is extras. Overall, the series itself is one of the better ones I've read.

Review for complete series

Twelve-year-old Mitsuki loves to sing - but a tumour in her throat and her overprotective grandmother prevent her from pursuing any serious music career. One day, two figures glide through her bedroom wall and introduce themselves as shinigami - angels of death - who have come to investigate some strange circumstances of her upcoming death. Knowing that she will die in a years time, Mitsuki entreats the shinigami to help her become a singer before her time runs out. She does not, however, tell them that it is more than just her love for singing that drives her.

This is one of the few manga where I can tell a big difference between my perception of it now compared to when I first read it some odd ten years ago. It was one of my first manga and it was a big favourite of mine - nowadays it is still a favourite, though to a certain extent more due to nostalgia. Some of the things that already bothered me ten years ago bother me even more now. However, it is still a lovely and heartfelt manga that I would prefer over many others.

I like Mitsuki as a character. She can be incredibly naive but I find it more believable in her considering her age and the fact that she's had a very sheltered life. I love how she is a tad traditional and even starts crying if someone starts cursing. I wouldn't call her a particularly strong character, though she does go through quite a bit of character development. At least her attitude towards life and death changes considerably.

The shinigami are a fun bunch of characters. The two main ones, Takuto and Meroko, who first introduce themselves to Mitsuki add a lot of fun to the series. Later we also get Izumi who comes across as rather sinister until he falls in with the rest. Although these characters are fun, much like Mitsuki, they have their own secrets and dark past.

Essentially, I feel as though Full Moon wo Sagashite goes into two very different directions - on one hand, it's a fun story of a twelve-year-old who gets to be a singer by the help of angels with animal characteristics. There's a lot of shenanigans with transformations, hiding true identities and coming up with enough cover up lies. But then, on the other hand, it tells a dark tale of lost opportunities, suicide, betrayal and terminal illnesses. I can't help but feel that these two don't work all that well together.

Most of the characters have a dark past - or so it would seem. I find that some of the 'sad' stories aren't all that sad and are trying to be more dramatic than what they actually are. But then, some of the other scenes are truly sad and can really give you that pang in the heart.

Idols always seem to be a popular theme for manga, and it's a theme I've never cared for much. Full Moon wo Sagashite is a unique one among them in that it doesn't have its main focus on the petty rivalry between the stars. It is more about the characters and their relationships, family, friendship and love. I loved the system behind the shinigami and Mitsuki was just the right character to be among them. So despite its shortcomings, it is still - and probably always will be - one of my favourite manga. Oh, and I love the art!

Reread!

I will split this into a review for the seventh volume and an overall review for the whole series.

Review Volume 7

I always criticized Arina a bit for her endings. They are usually a bit rushed and too easy for my taste, but with Fullmoon she absolutely nailed it. It’s the perfect cheesy Happy End those characters and the readers deserves after all the emotional turmoil. And I couldn’t care less that it’s a little too convenient, I love my sugary sweet cheesy endings. Everything is wrapped up nicely.

The reveal that Eichi‘s soul has been protecting Mitsuki the entire time is bittersweet, especially with that final drawing of him letting her go. But that’s what the series was all about, moving on, living your life and allowing yourself to be happy.

And that’s really what happens.

Madoka finds acceptance and love with Nachi. Ohshige and Waka-ouji get married. Fuzuki reconnects with the man she loved long ago (even though the family relations are plain weird). Izumi overcomes his darkness and accepts that he is a good person and Meroko finally lets herself be loved.

Also, Meroko and Izumi are just too damn adorable.

Takuto is given a second chance in life. And he uses it. So does Mitsuki. She is a fighter and in the end she wins her battle and gets to keep her voice.

The reunion between Takuto and Mitsuki still makes me cry. They are a wonderful couple and I‘m glad they ended up together.

This volume is just cuteness and overload and always puts a smile on my face.

Fullmoon o Sagashite Wrap Up

And that’s a wrap!

Do I love Fullmoon just as much as I used to? The answer is no, and that is okay.

Tastes change when you grow up. Perception changes when you grow up. Of course there are some things that you loved as a child or teenager that you just love as much as an adult, but a lot of the times, it just changes.

I still love the series overall. I love the art, the characters, the story and the relationships. I still think it’s Arina’s magnum opus.

However, I do see certain aspects differently than I used to do. Arina uses certain tropes I‘m just not a big fan of, there are some pacing issues and it can be a bit messy at times, but that’s fine. I still have so many emotions when it comes to this Manga and in the end that’s most important to me. It makes me feel so much. And I always enjoy getting back into that world.

Fullmoon is still my favorite Arina Tanemura Manga and it’s still such a joy to read.

Now... do I wanna go Sinshi Doumei Cross again? Because that’s when things get weird.

I've finally reached the end--and I mean that in a good way.

I first started this series in like 10th grade, borrowing the first couple of volumes from a friend. I didn't get to read the entire series, but it led to me collecting all of Tanemura's following series over the years. I'm 29 now and finally managed to find all of the volumes of Full Moon (as well as Time Stranger and Jeanne, which were the only other ones I was missing) to go back to where my love for her work first started.

I think this volume did a pretty decent job of wrapping things up. There were a lot of reveals, the pacing of which isn't the best, but I don't think I was really left with any questions (other than, )

The reveal about Eichi's soul was heartbreaking, but I'm glad we got to see some kind of conclusion to his story.

Overall, positive feelings about this one. It's not my favorite of her series, but I think it really is one that solidified Tanemura as a talented and popular mangaka.

I'm going to read KKJ next because it's the only Tanemura series that I haven't read yet. Gentlemen's Alliance is my favorite, so I want to reread that soon, too.

So... Mitsuki stands up to Sheldan and forces Izumi to confront his final memory. Takuto and Meroko manage to fight their way back to join Izumi in a final confrontation against Sheldan... only for the Death Master to stab Mitsuki and Takuto with her special scythe to prove once and for all if Mitsuki is supposed to die.

Then there's some wrap up, a three year time skip, then THE END.

I gotta say, the ending wraps up cleanly... but it feels contrived, like the author was running out of pages and did some hand-waved magic to give everyone a happy ending. Then the remaining third of the book is extras.

Overall, it's a very melodramatic soap opera that is fun to read... if you can go with the flow and let your eyes glaze over when the lovey-dovey parts start to get too metaphorical. Not bad, but definitely from a different time.

This series has 7 volumes.

Thoughts on the series as a whole:

This is one of Tanemura's early works and it...it shows. There's a definite lack of direction for the most part, paired with a series of twists that just don't seem go anywhere, and a general vagueness on where this series falls in terms of genre. Is it a idol story with magical elements ? or a fantasy story about shinigami that just happens to involve an idol storyline? Because, honestly, both seem to be the theme Tanemura is going for but at different points in the series.

The characters in here are also kind of flat and boring. I didn't care about any of them. I mean I couldn't even ship anybody (a sin in any Tanemura manga). I was just bored.

Definitely for a younger crowd.

Meinung

I cried. I cried so much. Oh gods. So much crying!

I'm glad I decided to read the series, but good gods I wish I had hydrated properly. I'm really happy with how it ended too.

Overall it was pretty solid series; the premise is heavy but it had enough of a candy coating to keep it from completely ruining me - plus the art is seriously gorgeous.

My only real complaint is that the translation was.... awkward the entire run. Stiff and unnatural in places. Sometimes to distraction. It IS an older series and I don't really hold the translation against it, but it's a (minor) annoyance all the same.

All in all - I had a fun time with this!

I feel so conflicted... I love Takuto, and the ending was really satisfying and sweet, but Eichi is my favorite, and my heart breaks for him. He's the only character who brought tears to my eyes (well Mitsuki too), and his relationship with Mitsuki is really beautiful. I almost wish there could've been a way for him to have come back, though I suppose it wouldn't make much sense haha.

I've heard the anime is pretty different? I've never seen it before, but reading this has me curious. I'll definitely give it a try, after I let my heart heal a bit, I'm not in the mood to cry anymore right now lol.

Happy endings for everyone!!! And I love it!
The twist with Eichi and Takuto were both good surprises. I really wasn’t expecting that!

Overall, I give this series a 5/5 stars. I really loved it. It was overly mushy sometimes but it’s shojo and it’s nice to cry every once in awhile! Lol.
The characters were so much fun and they all had interesting backstories. And of course, the art is beautiful. I could’ve just stared at the pictures the whole time and still had a blast lol.
Anyway, if you love girly art, romance and drama, this is the series for you!

È solo mezzo volumetto di storia… Il resto con contenuti speciali. SIGH!

I love and hate short series. The really good ones always leave me with a ton of questions, and the bad ones feel like a waste of time. This is one of the good ones. It wraps up loose ends and left me feeling satisfied so please, give this one a shot and watch the anime. The story line is different so it'll be worth watching.

This is a childhood manga series I love to read over and over again. Great characters, great story, interesting twists, and so much meaning.

Hence why I can't give it a fair review due to the nostalgia. Just know I love it and highly recommend it to anyone that love heart wrenching shojo stories!

Every moment of this volume felt like it could have been a tragedy or a triumph, sad or happy. There's so much up in the air about what's going to happen to Mitsuki and how the people around her will react. It's fantastic and emotional.
