Alter Ego is a beautiful sweet little manga about the struggles of being in love with your best friend and falling in love. The drawings of this manga are really cute and pretty.
The main character Noël is a very stubborn and jealous character, but she is still very likeable and I felt that the writer did a good job of making the reader understand where she is coming from. Sometimes I felt that she was overreacting, but every time she did the reasons why were also explained you got to understand where her frustration and jealousy was coming from.
There is not a lot of humour in this book, and it really focus on the struggles of being and falling in love. But even though this manga tackles some difficult subjects (beside love it also talks about being gay, abandonment and abuse) it does so very light heartedly and it does not make the manga difficult or hard to read.

It’s just a very cute and fun read in between more heavy and difficult books. It’s a lovely read that you can easly read in one day or a weekend.

I highly recommend this manga it’s just a very cute read that will touch your heart.

Two girls who happen to have a crush on the same girl, but their friend in common is already dating a guy. Thus, their feelings will never be returned as they want to. Time goes by and they start developing feelings for each other instead. So, in a few words: nothing you haven’t read before.

The story for me lacked depth and the MC was selfish and obnoxious AF but one thing I should praise is the art style –it’s quite beautiful and detailed.

WHAT A SWEET CANDY THIS BOOK IS! Excuse me but this is the absolute cutest thing I have encountered and I am simply heart-eyes over it. Noel and June are too pure and my heart is positively soaring. This book is so soft *sobbing*, and they are so young and sweet and wholesome. I protest to the ending though. I protest. This is the happy pill we grouches called humanity need.

Thank you to Netgalley and LOVE x LOVE for the ARC.

“Love isn’t selfish. No kind of love is.”

3.5 stars. Super cute story about a young woman who's always been in love with her best friend, and has to come to terms with the fact that that love will remain unrequited. Noel is grumpy and passionate and a little bit selfish, and when Elena's other best friend, June, comes to visit from out of town, Noel realises she's not the only one who's in love with Elena. This is about Noel and June eventually falling for each other, and it's really really cute. It has a very YA vibe (though they're in their early 20s) but I didn't mind that so much. It was great at showing how painful it is to have a love that's not returned, but also how important it is to not let that consume you, or trick you into thinking that that other person belongs to you or owes you anything. I really liked the art style, and as frustrating as Noel could be, I really started liking her after a bit. The romance was really adorable, even though (or maybe because) Noel was pretty tsundere. June is a great balance for her.

I do wish we'd seen a little more of why both girls initially fell for Elena (we see a bit, but not a lot) and more of their own courtship. It's a pretty short book, so I'm glad for what we did get, but it did feel a little underdeveloped. And one part in particular ended up rubbing me the wrong way, when Noel and Elena talk June out of a decision for reasons that... idk.

But there were a lot of cute moments to make up for it. I loved how they were able to be vulnerable and honest with each other, and it really made for a sweet story.

Elena has a new boyfriend, much to the chagrin of Noel, her longtime best friend. Noel’s had a crush on Elena forever, but never acted on it. When Elena’s other best friend, June, moves to town, she calls Noel out, but both June and Noel might be more alike than they realize.

Aww, this is cute. I mean, it’s more girls-love than yuri because the artist isn’t Japanese, but who cares? I just want a good story, I don’t need an official seal from the Kansai Prefecture Yuri Authority.

The characters really make this book. Take some college kids, mix in some angst, season with tropes (hello Deadbeat Dad!), serves one happy reviewer. Noel in particular is a blunt, sharp object (trust me) and borderline tsundere until she really becomes shrewish.

Noel has her reasons - largely being very sensitive, possibly oversensitive, and so unhappy about Elena’s boyfriend that she’s lashing out and desperate to hold on to what little connection she feels she has left (to point out the obvious, this only makes it worse).

When June enters the picture as this mythical long distance friend, it makes Noel feel even lower on the totem pole. Noel eventually softens, but not completely, and her easily wounded nature really resonated with me. I think your enjoyment of the book 100% depends on how you take to Noel, but she truly grows through this in a way that feels very organic and unforced.

June is more of a free spirit, but she’s got a lot of her own baggage that she keeps bottled tight. I love the juxtaposition of the two - June is constantly running from her problems while Noel is stuck refusing to change anything that would help hers.

Watching them meet in the middle makes for a sweet, and short, read. Yeah, sometimes you’re groaning at the tropes (of course June and Noel first meet by coincidence and then June moves nearby), but in a one-shot like this I can forgive a little shorthand. I was invested in seeing this play out.

The art’s really good. A bit scratchier at some points than I would like, perhaps, but overall quite strong. When Noel is hurt, you can feel those emotions on the page. There’s a group date that just... ugh... I still hate how it goes even knowing how the book ends. That’s good writing.

Arguably Elena and Hiro, her boyfriend, don’t get much personality, especially Hiro, but they’re hardly the main focus. Hiro is just a problem and Elena is this mythical object of desire for our leads. I do like the way that Elena comes through in the end, showing that she’s not as oblivious as she appears.

4 stars. Probably a 3.5 star story, but rounded up because, while this is a perfect single volume story, I would definitely read more of this were it available to me. It’s a very enjoyable little book that does some really solid character work and has a pair of (eventually) likeable leads.

This is as close to perfect as a yuri manga can get for me. Flawless. I have zero complaints. The art is gorgeous, the translation is great, the story draws you in, the characters are so lovable, and there's just the right mix of humor, romance, and drama.

This is a story about two girls who are in love with the same person though neither can have her. But they aren't taking solace in each other; rather, they keep getting thrust together by circumstance (and their crush's scheming) until they can't help but get to know one another and grow closer, and finally, true love blooms.

All three girls had unique, vibrant personalities. The story is well-paced and well-plotted. There are a handful of colorful side characters that help flesh out the story. Although technically some of the characters are in school, there's not a lot of focus on the school aspect, which I can sometimes find tedious. (Also, it's unclear if they are in high school or college, but I'm thinking it's more likely the latter.)

The manga is just a oneshot but it's pretty lengthy. There are 13 full-color illustrations in the front of the manga, which are just gorgeous. I'll be on the lookout for any more yuri titles from this author! This story warmed my heart and had me laughing out loud.

'The protagonist is like a less disgusting version of you.'
'You've gotten so cruel! Don't hold back even a bit!'

Can't believe that it took me so long to finally read this that the sequel is coming out this June aka 4 years after release and 3 since I've had it on my shelf LOL.

I don't know, there's just something about prickly characters that I can't help but love and Noel is exactly that. She's so grumpy and quite selfish but she does learn from her mistakes and realizes just how much she neglected her friendship with Elena just because of her feelings that Elena isn't to blame for. Her grumpiness is forever, though hee. June, on the other hand, is a writer with a sad and lonely life but she's so pure and deserves all the love. Not sure how I feel about the resolution to the whole name change thing, though hm.

I also loved that Hiro has so little page time and basically no personality LOL but we do see a little bit of why Noel and June would both develop feelings for Elena ha.

Alter Ego is such an adorable sapphic love story about two girls in love with their best friend that (very begrudgingly) discover they actually like each other's company. I'm actually so glad it's getting a sequel because their relationship dynamic is my fave seeing how Noel is always embarrassed about confessing her feelings and June is just teasing her about it.

This was cute but felt a little rushed in terms of plot/romance. The ending was also really open-ended and a lot of the things that were going on in the story were never even resolved.

noel has been in love with her best friend elena for a long time, but has never confessed her feelings. when elena starts dating a man, noel is crushed, and she begins to feel like she’ll never find love. to make matters worse, elena’s other friend, june, who noel is sure is replacing her, will be moving to town.

this was such a sweet manga. i really felt for noel as someone who has also felt left behind when a best friend gets a boyfriend and/or new best friend who you don’t get along with. i thought the romance between noel and june was nice, as they start out not really caring for one another but learn to get along by the end. i’m looking forward to the second volume!

I received a copy from Independent Publishers Group – LOVE x LOVE through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Noel has been in love with her best friend, Elena, since they first met. However, she’s never been able to get the nerve to confess her romantic feels, so she’s content with just being friends… or so she thought. When Elena gets a boyfriend, Noel becomes extremely jealous. It gets even worse when Elena’s online friend, June, moves to town. Convinced that everyone is stealing the precious time that she has with Elena, Noel lashes out, risking their entire friendship. Then one night, she takes off and confesses everything to a random stranger who finds her. Unfortunately for Noel, it turns out that stranger is actually June.

When I first started this book, I didn’t like Noel because she was super angry, jealous, and possessive. Personally, it set off red flags for me as someone who had been friends with someone who was jealous and possessive when I was a teenager. Thankfully, things did not go south for Noel because she’s a character willing to listen and grow. When she meets what she thought was a random stranger she’d likely never see again and confesses her feelings and what’s been going on, she listens to the advice she receives. I was happy to see her grow as a character and make an effort to look at how her anger, possessiveness, and jealousy affects others as she works to better herself.

As far as the other characters go, we really only get to know two other characters: Elena and June. I was surprised that we didn’t get to know Elena more than we did, but I thought she was a great and friendly character who really cares about the people around her. June swooped in and was a sweet, funny, and the voice of reason. She helps Noel grow as a person while growing herself in the process.

One of the things that I like about this story is that Noel and June are in the same boat. They’re both in love with Elena while knowing nothing will likely ever come of it, but they react in two very different ways. Noel reacts badly while June is positive about the whole thing. She’s just happy to see her friend be happy even if it’s not with her. It was neat to watch Noel and June help each other and have their own romance unexpectedly blossom in the process.

All in all, I think that this is a cute story. It gets a little heavy at times, but it’s mostly a light and fluffy story with a slow burning romance. It also has beautiful artwork from start to end. I’m looking forward to reading more from Ana C. Sánchez in the future.

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.

I just fell in love with this cover when I spotted this graphic novel on Netgalley. Plus, I love the manga-style drawings, they look so pretty! Since I am quite tired (reading and writing this on a Friday after a long day) I am doing a good/not so good review.

Good:
😍Cover. It is so cute and adorable. I love how one of the girls is all confident and the other is flustered.
😍The artwork inside. I just love it when books with art also add extra sketches and extra illustrations as an extra. And we get plenty! Sketches, full colour illustrations. LOVE LOVE.
😍Instead of chapter names/numbers we get stages. From Denial to Connection and then there is a Final Stage called: Our Best Friend. I was definitely eager to get started seeing those stages. What would happen in each of them?
😍I really liked Noel, while I haven’t been in love with a best friend, I could understand how painful it must be for that friend to be, as she would see it, snatched away by someone else. Instead of having her around all the time, you will only see her sporadically, not to mention the love you felt… well nothing is going to happen. I just wanted to give her hug. I could definitely understand why she was angry at Elena, and I am sure Elena understands slightly what is going on, but maybe a talk would have been better right away. It was great seeing Noel change as the stages came and left. The author did a really good job on showing Noel’s emotions.
😍June was an interesting character… though I wasn’t a big fan of her in the beginning. She seemed to be intend on spoiling the beans on what Noel confided in her and I am just not a fan of that kind of crap. I get that you are Elena’s friend as well, but oh boy, don’t go that direction, please. Thankfully, she got better with each page, with each stage and I slowly found myself really liking her. She really opened up herself to Noel. Which made us see a whole different side.
😍Elena, I wasn’t sure how to feel about this girl at first, but I pulled myself from Noel’s POV and away from her anger and I could clearly see that this girl wasn’t too blame. Yes, this sounds weird, I know, but we see everything from Noel’s POV, her pain, her anger, and you can’t help but feeling angry too. I had a big laugh at her plans in quite a few parts of the manga. Oh girl. Go! I loved how she was there for both her friends, a lot of times in romance manga friends drift apart or have little time when one of them gets a boyfriend (or girlfriend).
😍I loved seeing June and Noel drift together, find each other, and bond. While in the start I wasn’t shipping them, slowly but surely I saw a connection, a spark and boy, I started shipping. I was hoping these two could find love together, be together.
😍While it was sad, I was happy with the backstory we got on June. Poor thing. hugs June
😍There were moments I was just tearing up. That one scene around page 110 to 117 was just so powerful, so wonderfully written, I just couldn’t help but tear up. And there were other scenes as well.
😍The last stage/chapter? chef kiss LOVED IT!~
😍Always love it when the title of a book gets named, and in this case I was just squeeing as it made perfect sense and was just great.

Neutral/Mixed:
😶I was quite confused about the ages of the girls. I definitely hadn’t expected them to be drinking age. 😛 I thought more like 16-17. And yes, one of the girl’s lives in a home of her own apparently… but I am so used with that happening in manga/anime (no parents, alone in a home, 14-17 years old) that it didn’t stand out. Later we also learn they are in university, and here I thought they were in high school.
😶I am still not sure how I feel about Noel’s sister. Lord, she was annoying at times. You JUST DON’T ENTER A ROOM WITHOUT KNOCKING and YOU RESPECT YOUR SISTER’S PRIVACY (aka not breaking in on her PC or checking her stuff). Sorry, but that needed to be in caps. Lord.

As you can see A LOT of good, I really really enjoyed this one and I was pulled in totally. I love the manga-style art, it was really cute and I love the character designs. All in all, are you looking for a read about losing love and finding love? Friendship? Then be sure to check out this sweet and beautifully written graphic novel.

My third entry for #SapphicSeptember
Categories: Comfy, quick, new to me

This was a cute little Girls’ Love manga about an awkward college student who couldn’t get over her crush on her best friend, and who sees a new friendship as a rival for her best friend’s time and attention.

The main character was very immature, which made it feel more like a high school story (not in her feelings of unrequited love, but in how dramatic and rude she was to family, friends, and her crush for most of the story).

It was light and quick-paced, but I felt that making the characters officially younger would’ve worked better; it wasn’t funny enough to pull off that level of obnoxious as silly or charming in a college-aged main character.

The title is also an odd choice, as the rival/love interest mentions it in passing as the title of a story she’s writing, but it’s not really related to the story in any way.
Cute, but glad I borrowed it on Hoopla with my library card, and didn’t pay to buy it. I’d look into future stuff from the author if it’s covered under a library card or a subscription I already have, but wouldn’t buy anything.

I fell in love with the cover and the art style is absolutely gorgeous!! Noel and June were adorable together. I loved seeing them slowly connect with each other and get closer.

I really liked Elena, their best friend and she sort of helped them along the way. This manga also deals with the importance of friendship. It's a very sweet story and if you're looking for a cute yuri romance, I'd recommend Alter Ego. It gave me all the warm and fuzzy feelings. It also has hate to love, and I'm a sucker for that!

June's backstory just made me want to hug her so bad! And I would love see more volumes of Noel and June navigating their relationship. (though I think it's a standalone)

Our adorable mc Noel has had a crush on her best friend Elena for a while and is utterly heartbroken when Elena gets a boyfriend. She begins to act harsh and cruel, attempting to distance herself from Elena but ultimately failing. When Elena's other best friend, June, comes to town, Noel and June immediately buttheads. Both have feelings for Elena but eventually find feelings for each other.

This was a pretty cute, satisfying read. I really enjoyed how all of the characters were rational and usually talked about their feelings after a little miscommunication. Overall. a sweet read

Healing with girl love

People who are might be offended by the thought of two girls falling for each other much less being initiate (even though they don't go all the way making this book probably rated for Teens) should stop now because this is indeed a manga in that sort of style.

Now that said I found the characters to be delightful each with their own flaws (though Elena being the original love interest of both girls almost comes out as perfect and unreachable to either of them when she gets a boyfriend making her less of a focus to the real love story.) Noel is awkward and easy to anger when it feels like she might lose those close to her but after confessing her feelings to what she thought was a stranger when she discovered the girl she wanted to confess to (but never had the courage being her friend and another girl) her world is forced to change as she discovers things are not always what they seem. In the mean time June who is Elena's other good friend from out of town decides to take her own chances as she and Noel get to know each other a little better. In the end the connection these two will build will end up healing some of the hurt and pain each other has felt up till now and now I invite you to see how that happens in this simple love story based on a mutual crush. If you have Amazon's Kindle Unlimited it is available to borrow as of the moment of this review even. :)

This was a really cute manga! I have slowly been dipping my toe into the saphic manga world. This is one of my first excursions and if the whole genre is like this than I think this may become a new favorite genre of mine.
I did have a few issues with the main character and her very blatant anger issues. I do wish that had been addressed a bit more but it didn't ruin my experience reading this. In some places I knew exactly what the mc was feeling. The jealousy and anger when your crush finally gets a significant other can be heart breaking.
I really did enjoy the romance once it got going. The slowing burn of it all was great and I found the love interest to be very likeable. She reminded me a lot of what its like once you finally come to terms with who you are. Her awareness of who she was and what she wanted against our other character who id still figuring herself out was wonderful.
Even with my small issues with this manga I would still recommend it. I liked the love story and I really liked the characters as well. This was a solid first entry in a manga series.
