A Song of Ice and Fire: The Graphic Novels #7

A Clash of Kings: The Graphic Novel, Volume Three

Rate this book
Tensions rise as a divided kingdom falters in this third volume of a four-part, full-color graphic novel adaptation of the second book in George R. R. Martin's landmark Song of Ice and Fire series, the inspiration for HBO's Game of Thrones.

New York Times
bestselling author Landry Q. Walker and illustrator Mel Rubi continue to serve up a feast in this penultimate volume. In the south, Renly is dead at his brother's hand, but even as Stannis seeks a way to subdue Renly's hold of Storm's End, Tywin Lannister continues his march toward King's Landing, harried by the forces of Robb Stark and Edmure Tully. As Robb wins victory after victory, his sister Arya finds her own small way to turn the tides against the Lannister forces from her secret place inside Harrenhal--while back at Winterfell, their brother Bran is about to discover the true meaning of his prophetic dreams. Meanwhile, beyond the Wall, Jon Snow is chosen for a very special mission, and in sun-drenched Qarth, Daenerys Targaryen enters the House of the Undying.

And so the pieces slowly shift into place, setting the stage for the explosive final volume as king at last clashes with king. This stunning graphic novel brings George R. R. Martin's landmark series to vivid life and is a must-read for any series fan.

It might seem rather strange to read this third volume only a week or so after finishing re-reading the prose version. I must admit, at times it did occasionally grate during the odd down moment here or there, but it did make for a very accurate comparison between the two. It goes without saying, Martin's magnum opus won out over the two, although it would take something truly incompetent, truly imbecilic to water down such a fantastic piece of fantasy into something unreadable. Thankfully, A Clash of Kings volume three, although not as enjoyable as other entries in this comics series, is still pretty damn good.
Again, when you are adapting ASOIAF, it's not that hard to make it outstanding, that said, I would question the pacing and plotting of this arc. I seem to remember previous volumes coming in at over 200 pages. This one is a fairly formulaic 160 odd, and the omissions and rushed nature take its toll here and there. The page is often so overcrowded with text boxes, that what little we see of the art is muted behind all that speech. Not only this, but each panel describes so much, that the art is little more than a stagnant picture framing the words. I have nothing against wordy comics, especially when adapting Martin's magnificent dialogue, but a trick has definitely been missed here. not only is the art a little hit and miss for me, but it really doesn't feel like the art is telling enough of the story either. I don't necessarily blame the artist for this, nor necessarily the adaptation. It was no mean feat squeezing all this into 160 pages, although the end result was a little underwhelming.
As stated above, the art is not particularly to my taste, although its far from bad. The variance in character face models was a little grating, and I don't like the colouring all that much. That and the character models being so different to what I have grown accustomed to over the show's 8 years. I get that they characters don't have to reflect the actors and actresses, although some are so overwhelmingly opposing from the show in their looks, that it really, really bugs me. And some are just 'generic fantasy person number fifteen'.
I'm giving this a bit of stick, but it's still pretty damn good. But again, that comes down to George and George alone, really. I'm glad these adaptations exist, if nothing else than a testament to the medium which George grew up on, but it would take a significant change in format and an upgrade in artistry to match the novels themselves. 4/5

This is the third volume (of four) of A Clash of Kings, the graphic novel. Part of book two of George RR Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire.

Like with the second volume, this one suffered from not having a beginning or an end. The art and writing was fun and seeing this adaptation I learned something and felt like I enjoyed the reading.

It ends just after the great wave crashes over Winterfell and then someone loses track of the little lord. Not a great place to end it I think better would have been the end of Jon’s chapter just before (his meeting Ygritte).

The best sequence was Danaerys in the House of the Undying. Next time I read the novel I will have to see if the red wedding was foreshadowed there because it certainly ly is here.

A low three stars. Hoping the final volume with its original source narrative will be amazing.

Another solid, if slowly paced, entry. The sections with Cat and Arya and Theon all feel so slow compared to the closing walls around Tyrion or the sudden narrative shifts with Davos. And Daenrys’ plot feels, like in the show and novels, the most wildly disconnected and distant to the main plots. Illustrations are fine here too, but it felt like there just wasn’t as much here outside some baby dragons to really flex the creative expression visually.

I love GOT, so I’m biased, but these graphic novel adaptations are amazing. They mirror the novels by flying from one character to the next (usually two per issue), but the storytelling has its own interpretive style and feel to it: they’re more “storybook” and brighter than the TV version, and more distilled and refined (in focus) than the novels. They remind me of the old Hobbit graphic novel.

This was better than the first two books in Clash of Kings. Things actually happened in this one. One more to go. I hope it really picks up and accomplishes something in the last of the graphic novel adaptations.
