Aly doesn't believe in psychics. Too bad she just had a vision.
Future scientists don't have visions. Aly's got enough on her plate, with finishing her degree and taking care of her nephew and starting her new job at the antique store while drooling over the owner's gorgeous son. No visions.
Alas, the universe doesn't care what Aly believes. When she turns 21, she starts to feel psychic impressions left on objects. A disorienting power for someone surrounded by antiques. Then cranky customer Earl is killed, and Aly's new boss Olive is the prime suspect. Who hated Earl enough to kill? Police would rather make a quick arrest than investigate, so it's up to Aly to clear Olive's name.
Shady Grove is reeling from the first murder in decades. If Aly can get her hands on the murder weapon, she should be able to solve the crime. Can she learn to control her visions before the killer sets their sights on her?
Ada Bell knew you'd be reading this. Okay, well, she knew someone would be. (Hi, Mom!) That's pretty much the extent of her psychic powers. A life-long mystery buff, Ada has devoured everything from Murder, She Wrote to Nancy Drew to Psych!, so she was pretty much destined to end up here. Ada loves Scooby Doo, superhero movies, STEM heroines, and cake. Mmm, cake.
Mystic Pieces (Shady Grove Pyschic Mystery #1) by Ada Bell Great clean fun with a gal who finds she has psychic powers but has no idea how to use them. An old idea but made unique and fun with a great murder mystery and a touch of romance. Great narration too.
Ok. This was a quick fun read that was spoiled by the writer not keeping track of what she wrote, so Doug, a policeman told Aly that ‘Thelma made the anonymous call to the police, then she didn’t know who made the call, and then it was a man who made the call! Yeah, a few things like that just didn’t stack up, and spell check mistakes got through. So while the story was fun, I wouldn’t pay money for a book that’s just not finished properly. Sloppy. So glad I didn’t!
Mystic Pieces is the first book I've read by Ada Bell. I love it when I discover a new-to-me author! This book was part of the January Cozy Mystery Reading Challenge at Cozy Mystery Corner group on Facebook. So glad I joined!
The basics: Aly moves to a small town in New York state with her brother to help raise her nephew after the death of her sister in law. She wants to go back to school and finish her biology degree. To fund her college efforts, she gets a job at a local antique store. But there's something strange about the little town of Shady Grove....something strange about the antique shop....and something strange about Aly. Aly starts having psychic visions -- something totally outside her scientific thought processes. And then finds herself pulled into a murder investigation. |
What an entertaining story! I enjoyed the plot....the characters...the setting. The book is a nice mix of mystery and humor. Aly makes for a great main character. She's got a lot on her plate -- a 3 year old nephew to help with, college plans, a new job, weird visions....and a murder. Lots going on! Makes for a fun story to read!
This book about a young woman whose psychic powers are awakened on her twenty-first birthday is fun, fast-paced, and full of surprises. The author does such a wonderful job with world-building and character development all while the story’s intrepid heroine, Aly, investigates a murder that’s being unfairly blamed on her new boss at the town’s antique store. The bits in the book where Aly has a vision when touching an item are written in such an evocative way that I felt as if I was being transported to a different time and place right along with her! Aly stumbles along the way to discovering the truth, misreading clues, suspecting the wrong people, etc., but I liked how relentless she is and how she applies her love of science to the process. The climactic scene where she figures out whodunit and faces off with the culprit is legit suspenseful.
There are lots of enticing breadcrumbs dropped in this book about different characters and a mysterious death in Aly’s family, so I am itching to know more and can’t wait to read the next book in the series! Also, I need to find out if a romance is going to develop between Aly and the dreamy son of the antique shop owner.
I received an advance copy of MYSTIC PIECES in exchange for an honest review.
I use to be on of those people that if I started a book I finished. Then I decided why? If the book isn’t good and/or doesn’t really hold my interest why torcher myself.
This one, I wanted to stop, but I had to keep reading to see just how much an idiot she was. Clues hit her over the head and she couldn’t see them(can’t see your hand in front of your face.). Between rolling my eyes, shaking and rubbing my head…. I didn’t care what happened to her, but knew she was the main character thus not dying. Too bad…the saying too stupid to live. Anyway done, will not continue this series.
This was a reasonably good debut. Aly’s psychic abilities manifest on her 21st birthday after visiting a magic shop and trying on a ring. She’s employed by the owner of the shop and soon a murder occurs with her boss as the suspect. Aly, who lives with her brother and his 3 year old son after the murder of his wife, is convinced her boss is innocent and sets out to prove it. Along the way it reawakens interest in the unsolved murder of her sister in law and Aly in interested in finding that culprit.
Aly is witty, and very much a 21 year old trying to find her way in the world. She has visions after touching or putting on an object but because her powers are new, she fumbles her way through the mystery trying to decipher her visions. She’s relentless in her mission and her belief in people, but we shall see how that all plays out. Overall a good debut.
This was a good read. Aly one day is looking for a job and she experiences something unusual in the store Mystic Pieces. Her being a scientist makes this whole thing unbelievable to her. However, when he now boss is arrested for murder she now uses her new gift to try and solve the case. Thankfully it works and all is well for now.
I love a good cozy mystery. This one didn't work for me.
Kevin: Thanks for helping me with Kyle, since my wife died. Concentrate on a a part-time job and going back to school, sis.
Olive: I run a second-hand shop. Come work with me part-time. I'm very flexible and can help you with the psychic visions you just realized you had.
Nobody:
Aly: Nah, even though I fancy myself a scientist, I think I'll solve a murder in this small town I recently moved to. I'll avenge the arrest of my boss. I won't work with the cops, but I am determined to find the murder weapon before the police. I'll interview everyone in town and expect them to talk to me, and get mad when they lie to me, although I lie every other sentence. Some of the people I interrogate will complain to the police about me. I bribe cops and steal my brother's car. Also, I'm an authoritarian who wants the wi-fi cut so no one can listen to the mayor's speech. My psychic visions make me a super special person.
Me, the reader: You're too stupid to solve murders. You're also irritating. Stay away from me, weirdo.
Opposites! Science and Mystic; what a smart concept! The main character is fighting what she believes with what she is experiencing, all thanks to a new job and a hidden ability that surfaces when she least expects it. Then when her new boss is arrested for murder, Aly uses her new ability to clear her boss. I love the way the author plays with the science as a way for the main character to balance her thoughts and emotions. The mystery was good, and the characters were fun. I actually like the has-been actress and her outlandish taste in colors. I highly recommend this book. In fact, I've already downloaded book 2 in the series!
Not a bad start of a series. I liked how the psychic power were described and used by the characters. I gave it three stars because the story feels a little naive. The murder is not that complicated and and pretty easy to solves. Still, there is more then the murder in the story, like the psychic powers and her family' story. Also, I listened to the audio book and some passage where hard to follow because the character was jumping from inner dialogue to speech and back to inner dialogue. So it was hard to understand some of the conversation since it was read out loud. So I would advise you to read the book instead of going for the audiobook version.
I received a free copy from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.
Since I first heard about this book I was looking forward to reading it. I've read some of this author's books under her other pen name and was excited she was branching out into cozy mysteries. Mystic Pieces was a solid start to this new series, introducing the town, the characters and the main character psychic powers. I really enjoyed it and look forward to future books!
In Mystic Pieces main character Aly has recently moved to Shady Grove and is planning to finish her degree in a city close by. While looking for a job she stumbles upon an antique store that's hiring and she has her first vision there. Shortly after that she get involved in a murder mystery as well. I liked reading about Aly and how she dealt with everything going on. It had a nice mix between mystery, while also getting to know some of the characters and the town as well as learning more about Aly's new powers.
This one had a solid mystery. I liked how Aly got involved as her boss was the main suspect and how she used her logic inclined way of thinking to work through the mystery. I wasn't sure who had done it and kept going in different directions and motives. It wasn't a big surprise who had done it, but there were some nice twists and I liked how it all made sense. The addition of Aly's powers and how those intertwined with her solving the mystery was great too. I was happy with how natural some of the developments felt and not too forced. There are some coincidences, but the way it happens makes it feel realistic instead of forced, which was great.
I liked Aly as a main character, with her science background and logical way of thinking. I sure felt for her when she discovered her psychic powers and it made sense how she didn't want to believe it at first. I am glad her doubt phase didn't last too long and I liked how she used some experimentation to figure out more about her powers. She was a likable main character and I liked how she went about things in a smart way, but also could be a bit impulsive at times.
There is a fun cast of side characters and I liked how the author gave all of them enough personality that it was easy to remember who was who. I liked getting a feel for the town and the side characters and I look forward to reading about them more. I especially liked Olive, Aly's boss. There are some possible love interests for Aly as well and I am curious to see how that develops. I also liked the hint of another mystery for Aly to solve about Katrina's death and I wonder if that will be the next book.
Most of the paranormal cozy mystery books I read have witches as the main character, so it was refreshing to read about a psychic in this one. I liked how Aly tried to use her powers to solve the mystery, but also had to figure out how it all works. I hope to see more about her powers in future books.
To summarize: This was a solid start to this paranormal cozy mystery series. I had fun reading this one. I liked the inclusion of Aly's psychic powers and how she tried to use them to help solve the mystery. It made sense how she got involved and how she went about figuring out who had done it. And I liked how natural and realistic instead forced some of the coincidences felt. The mystery kept me guessing, although the murderer wasn't too big of a surprise there were some nice twists along the way and I was never quite sure who the murderer was. I liked Aly as a main character and reading about her and her powers. I liked the side characters and how each had their own personality that made it easy to remember. All in all I really enjoyed this book and look forward to the next book in the series!
Mixed review for this book. The mystery was supurb. It was really good and complex, while still leaving little details that could help you figure out what happened to the victim. A 5 out of 5 on the cozy mystery part.
The main character though was not entirely my cup of tea. I'm not sure if it was the narrator that read the audiobook, or the character herself that I couldn't get behind. There were several times she felt inconsistent, but also too young to be the focus of the mystery solving piece. But as I said earlier, it could have been the narrator that I listened to up to chapter 15. When I read the last few chapters in e-book she didn't seem as annoying , but then she wasn't doing some of the mildly annoying things she did in the early chapters (ex:) I'd probably give the main character a 3 out of 5, but I do want to try the next book without the audiobook narrator and see if she is as equally annoying as she was in this one before I make a final decision.
Aly Reynolds's hunt for a new job comes to an end when she walks into Mystic Pieces, a store with an eclectic inventory. A mishap with a ring leads to Aly's discovery of her previously untapped psychic talents. Before she can investigate this much further, her boss is arrested for the murder of an obnoxious customer. In order to retain her employment and perhaps learn more about her new powers, she'll need to clear the name of her boss and find the true killer.
While this was a fun mystery, I didn't bond with the characters as I like to do and, alas, one problem was with the main character. Aly is written as a 21-year-old, but she seems much more grown-up than anyone I know who's just out of their teens. Heck, I know people in their 30s who aren't as mature as Aly. To be fair, this is the introduction to the series and relationships between characters are just forming.
One of the things that I really did appreciate was the take on Aly's (and others') psychic abilities. Rather than the w00-w00 element, Ada Bell addressed the subject with pragmatism much as you would expect with people who are attuned to such. And I particularly enjoyed Aly's .
I'm fairly new to this genre of cozy mysteries. This one had me intrigued from the beginning and I thought it was about to become a time travel story. Did Aly's 21st birthday bring some intriguing powers to life. Using objects causes visions, which could be very interesting while working in an antique store. A few days in town and there is a murder, she's determined to rescue her boss by solving it and finding the real killer. Is she on the right track or putting herself in danger? The author cleverly threw in some red herrings keeping the mystery until the end for me. I really enjoyed this story and its characters.
Aly moves to a small town outside of New York to help her brother care for her nephew since the passing of his wife. She’s sucked into a murder mystery and learning things about herself along the way!
This was a super quick read, under 300 pages. The writing wasn’t great but it was cute! I was interested enough in the story to see where it went. I may or may not continue the series but it was an enjoyable read!
I think it could have been a little longer to delve more into the characters but overall was decent.
Look... I found this book kinda interesting. But I stupidly tried to find out if Ali and Sam end up together in the end I found out the direction the series goes in. I'm not interested in continuing now that I know where things end up. Kind of a bummer, because I want to find a good new cozy series.
A fast paced paranormal cozy mystery. With whimsical characters in a tiny town in upstate New York. The paranormal is in the psychic touch form which the main character just discovers on her 21 birthday. I like the sense of humor and hope to read more of this series.
I was annoyed at Aly throughout most of the book. If you literally have to use the phrase "I'm not a kid" you are, in fact, a kid. Also, she was wrong so often I stopped believing her when she thought she knew who had done it! That being said, I kinda wanna know who killed her brothers wife.
3.5 stars for this cozy mystery. It certainly isn't a literary masterpiece, but it was humorous and enjoyable. A quick, easy read for Halloween seaason.
I wasn’t sure what to expect with this book but I Was pleasantly surprised.
The characters were really relatable and likeable. I especially liked the protagonist Aly, Who has unusual powers.
It was good to see how the story unfolded and had me guessing right up until the reveal. It was good plot but not cheesy and also not too taxing of having to think about the clues etc as some stories can get too bogged down in detail, this story was easy to follow.
I can’t wait to read the next in the series to see what happens to Olive and Aly next.
This was a cute read and a good introduction to Aly. Overall, I really enjoyed the writing style and the story. It was easy to dig into the story and the characters. I liked the quirky small town setting and the creativity with the business names.
The only caveat I'd add is that Aly was awful protective of Olive after just knowing her for a couple hours. So it seemed really implausible to me that she'd suddenly begin doing detective work and trying to defend Olive. I think it would have helped if Aly would have been working at the shop for at least a little bit before the mystery begins. Also did Aly not celebrate her 21st birthday? That just felt like an important detail that was glossed over.
Despite these two issues, I enjoyed the story and will move on to Book 2 in the series.
Loved this cozy! I fell in love with the small town of Shady Grove and the quirky people in it. Enjoyed being in on the “gossip” about them all too! Am definitely going to read the series now.
Great story but lost stars for over 25 editing errors, pushing homosexuality as normal, and making racist comments. Seriously?! Otherwise, this would be a good storyline. If you're going to write a story you don't mix that with trying to mind message people into believing politically-correct ideas are right; just write the story.
Sneaking this into a "cozy mystery" is like pushing for drag queens to read to children at story hour - NOT acceptable! (P.S. this book should be rated as not for children under 21 years old.)
What a fun read! If you want a book you won't want to put down, grab a copy of Mystic Pieces! This cozy mystery with a psychic twist is unpredictable and entertaining. It is a true page-turner! I loved the cast of characters who were quirky and fun. I laughed out loud many times while reading this story, and I wish I could take a trip to Shady Grove... I can't wait for book two in this series!
