My kid loves dinosaurs, and of course I encourage all types of reading, but some of the dinosaur books he brings home from school are a little bland, or too dense for his age. He wants something fun to read, but full of facts - and that can be a tough order for a 5yo! I was relieved to see this book because I knew it would have the information my son wants, and I personally love Lowery’s drawing style and humor - win-win!
Since my son is young, we look at the pictures and read the large, handwritten facts together. Sometimes I’ll read the smaller typewritten facts aloud, but sometimes he’s ready to move on and soak up more information on the next page. I love that, because as he gets older, he’ll be able to keep coming back to this book and learn new things!
As a parent reading it aloud, I especially appreciate the pronunciation key for all of these dinosaurs and other creatures! I definitely stumble over dinosaur names if left to my own devices, so it’s nice to have right under the pictures in this book. I also love Lowery’s trademark humor and random jokes, which help make this book amazing for all ages!
Over the years, I’ve had many students who were obsessed with dinosaurs - they would have loved this book!
Written in graphic novel style, this informational book covers dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals, eras of time, includes definitions, pronunciation guides, how-to guides for drawing your favorite dinosaurs, dino jokes, a field guide, and uses standard non-fiction text features to highlight important info.
This is the perfect book for older children. They are ready for more information, but still want colorful illustrations and an engaging format. Lowery fills their needs with this delightful dinosaur 🦖 🦕 book.
Thanks to Scholastic Inc and Mike Lowery Studio for sharing a copy of this funny, fact-filled book about dinosaurs with Kid Lit Exchange.
My two year old son and I fight over this book. Luckily I’m much bigger than him and can pry it from his greasy toddler sized fingers. We compromise that I read aloud and he watches and makes appropriate Dino grunts and roars were needed. Love the facts, jokes and info in this book. I was so sad to hear about T. rex and the myths that surround my favorite dinosaur. Can’t wait to read his next book about sharks.
Nonfiction Grade Level: 2-5 This book is full of neat and weird facts about dinosaurs and is written and illustrated by Mike Lowery (The New York Times bestselling illustrator). Any dinosaur fanatic, young or old, would enjoy reading this book. The illustrations are particularly engaging, no surprises there, with lots of neat graphics, diagrams, and text features. This is a must-read for any dinosaur enthusiast.
This book talks about dinosaurs and the different kinds that where alive at that era.
I really like this book because like most males I grew up loving dinosaurs and this book looks like a comic and that just makes it that much cooler.
I would use this book if we were doing a dinosaur week at school because i would read parts of the book through out the week because theres a lot of information in this book.
Awakened my inner kid. This is EXACTLY the book I wish I'd had as a kid and I've already recommended it to every parent of a young child in my life. There is so much info packed into this, and it's constantly clearing up common misconceptions about dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures, which is extra cool.
This was overall a good book about dinosaurs but with one caveat: as with most books about dinosaurs, it is too heavy on the evolution theory and presents it too much as fact. As a Christian, I do not believe evolution is biblical. However, I did learn that pterodactyl is not a real word and that was fun! It actually an amalgamation of pterodactylus and pteranodon.
Did dinosaurs have feathers? Learn about hundreds of weird, interesting dinosaur facts, cool colorful drawings, dinosaur jokes and more. If you don't love dinosaurs, you will after reading this fun & entertaining book.
Informative and attention-getting. Out of all of the dinosaur books I brought to an after-school program for elementary aged students this was the most popular.
Thank you to @scholasticinc and @mikelowerystudio for sharing an advance copy of Everything Awesome About Dinosaurs and Other Prehistoric Beasts! with the #kidlitexchange network. This books was released in October 2019 and is available for purchase. All opinions are my own.
This nonfiction children's book is marketed as "the ultimate book about all things prehistoric and totally awesome." It most definitely fulfills this definition. It includes wacky, fun, astounding, and interesting facts about dinosaurs and other prehistoric beasts (including insects, plants, mammals, and marine life). The information is provided in a fun and humorous way that keeps you fully engaged. The artwork is energetic, humorous, and colorful. The facts included are thought-provoking. I really loved learning about the different types of dinosaurs and prehistoric beasts. I will fully admit that I learned several new things from this book. Like pterodactyls are not only not dinosaurs, they're not even a thing. Rather, "it's a common (but wrong) way of referring to pterodactylus and pteranodon and other pterosaurs" (58). I also learned that birds are dinosaurs?! Aside from all of the facts and learning, one of my favorite parts of this book were the jokes included. They were cute, humorous, punny and what many may describe as "dad jokes" but that only made me enjoy them more. This book was so fun and engaging. It's a little young for my classroom (I teach 7th grade), but it would be the perfect addition to an elementary (grades 1-4) classroom library. This is the perfect book for the young (or young-at-heart) dinosaur enthusiast in your life.
@kidlitexchange #partner Thank you @kidlitexchange for the review copy of Everything Awesome About Dinosaurs and other Prehistoric Beasts. This book was released on 10/15/19 by Scholastic. All opinions are my own. As the title says, this is an AWESOME book about dinosaurs! It is a must have for the dinosaur lover in your life. Not only does it gave a lot of facts about dinosaurs, but it also has humor and fun, colorful illustrations. This book will take you on a journey from the Precambrian era to the Cretacious period. You will learn about all dinosaurs-from the ankylosaurus, to the T-Rex. You will learn about carnivores and herbivores, dinosaurs evolution through time periods, fossils and paleontology, and so much more. It is packed with information, and gives a lot of fun and weird facts and jokes. Did you know that Canada has a few coins that have dinosaurs on them? One of them even glows in the dark! In 2006, a new species of pachycephalosaurid was discovered and named Dracorex hogwartsia by a paleontologist who was a fan of the series of books about a certain wizard! The name translates to “Dragon King of Hogwarts.” Which dinosaur never gives up?.... A TRY-ceretops! LOL. The end of the book includes a section on how to draw dinosaurs, a dino field guide, a list of dinosaur resources, and dino jokes. I highly recommend this book for kids of all ages who are interested in dinosaurs!
This one is a 3.5 for me, and oh, my, yes, I would have it in my classroom although I doubt that it would remain on the bookshelf for very long. Not only is the subject--dinosaurs--one that is popular with many fourth, fifth, and sixth graders, but the book's design and jokes will entice those readers even more. The book provides a history of life on Earth before the arrival of the dinosaurs, covering various eras, nailing down what is and isn't a dinosaur, and then, after the build-up, introducing various types of dinosaurs and challenging some myths about them. Readers are even given tips for how to draw dinosaurs, learn about paleontologists, and consider the past mass extinctions and possible reasons for the demise of dinosaurs. Since all of this information is served up in a palatable, witty fashion without a hint of condescension and it's obvious that the author/illustrator finds dinosaurs just as interesting as his readers do, the book has an almost breathless, I-can't-wait-to-tell-you-this writing style that draws readers in. Plus, nuggets such as imagining the size of the fleas that plagued dinosaurs and awarding prizes for largest teeth or largest brain, put the book in a class by itself what with all those large drawings and minimal but large and readable text. I would have loved this book when I was growing up, but I still had a blast reading it as an adult.
Thanks to the Kid Lit Exchange network and Orchard Books for the review copy of this book by Mike Lowery. All opinions are my own.
My favorite thing about this nonfiction text is that it looks and reads like a graphic novel. The facts are paired with jokes and cartoon-like drawings that will keep kids interested. There is even a section at the end that explains how to draw various dinosaurs. I also love that this book gives a brief history of life on Earth leading up to the dinosaurs. Then the dinosaurs themselves are presented in an award show style format with “awards” for the fastest dinosaur, largest dinosaur, etc. This text even explores a few extinction theories and discusses other prehistoric creatures. There are a lot of facts and information packed into this book, but it is presented in a way that does not feel overwhelming or boring.
This would be a great book for children that are reluctant to read nonfiction books. The graphic novel feel will help to hold their attention, and they’ll learn some pretty amazing facts! This book would be ideal for grades 2 – 5.
I don't remember how I found out about this book, but I did like the looks of the pages and it's been awhile since I read up on dinosaurs, so I picked up the book.
I thought it would likely take the view that life evolved and I wasn't wrong. Since I believe otherwise I had a hard time with this aspect of the book. It would have been nice if the author included information about other beliefs people have such as creation and the flood of Noah's time just to give a more well-rounded look at all creation beliefs.
There were positive aspects of the book, though. I liked the section on how to draw dinosaurs and the dinosaur jokes were great.
Recommend this to folks looking for interesting dinosaur facts, fun jokes, and tips on drawing dinosaurs.
This was a fun graphic novel? comic book? presentation about prehistoric animals. Bold graphics pop and compete for your attention. Lots of little jokes and asides. Pronunciation guides are provided but there's a bit of inconsistency in reminding the reader of which period the author is talking about. A browser's delight. Books consulted listed, but otherwise not sourced in the arc.
A stupendous amount of information about, yes-dinosaurs. Every page in this book is jam-packed, making it a great choice for savvy readers, and perhaps a bit difficult for developing readers. Uncorrected proof reviewed.
Did dinosaurs have feathers? Learn about hundreds of weird, interesting dinosaur facts, cool colorful drawings, dinosaur jokes and more. If you don't love dinosaurs, you will after eating, I mean reading this fun and entertaining book. Reviewer #14
