Am I allowed to use that as an excuse to feel something toward the man that runs this place, is the reason I'm here in the first place, as well as my sister Raven?
They call him The Boss. I call him Fender.
And he calls me Beautiful.
I can tell myself I'm just using him to get what I want.
A New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author, Penelope Sky is known for her dark romance that makes you fall for her characters….no matter how dark they seem. Her books are being translated into several languages around the world, and she’s sold more than a million books worldwide. She lives in a small town in California with her husband, where she spends most of her time writing on the back porch.
I love ALL of Penelope sky's books, but fender was just so freaking annoying. Like we all love anti heroes and villians but I just couldn't stand fender. He was so illogical and stubborn and stuck. I loved this story from magnus pov because even though he was part of the camp he wanted to change it. Fender is just stuck to his thought process and he refuses to listen to anyone even his brother whom he supposedly trusts!!! Its really irritating.
This review is possibly the hardest to write in a long time because I am a die hard Penelope Sky fan. I love everything she writes, except this one. I really disliked Melanie. She didn’t have much substance and was just vapid. Fender expects everyone to bend to his will even when he’s in the wrong. This book just fell short for me.
Why does Fender hate Raven, so much? He calls her a dog, and he thinks she's hideous and ugly. Why? She's never done anything to him, except except escaping his death camp to freedom. Melanie is like an enigma. I want to not like her. But when she grieves for her sister with a broken heart, I don't feel so bad towards her. Fender thinks she's so beautiful and looks like a painting. And thinks that her sister Raven is the ugliest thing he's ever seen. It doesn't matter that she's not ugly. She's just not as pretty as Melanie. But Melanie is without substance. She's shallow and weak. Where Raven is a bad add and strong. I'm so glad that she and Magnus ended up together. I tried to like Fender, but it was so hard when he hates Raven so much. But my heart felt sad for him when he realized that his brother Magnus lied to him about not knowing how Raven escaped, and when Melanie left him to go with her sister Raven. I felt his heart break and pain. He felt betrayed by his brother. But it's because he can't see pass his hatred for Raven. Looking forward to reading Palace.
I started 'The Chateau - Chateau # 1' before this but since the events happen at the same time I jumped into this book because the story intrigued me more.
I like Penelope's books. Even though I expect much of the same from her I still read the books anyway.
But this book? NO. And here is why; I could never be with a man who day in & day out despises & curses my sister (or any of sibling or friend for that matter). Fender hates Melanie's sister with a passion & he doesn't hide that fact. He calls her names, wants to kill her etc. I get that Melanie & her sister have been at odds but that's just sibling rivalry. And just because Melanie is the beautiful sister? F*** that.
I get being with a man so that my sister can be protected & cared for but not this bullshit. No this BS. This is the big reason this book gets 2stars, I almost gave it 1 but I'll settle for 2 stars!
When I started reading I couldn't put it down.Penelope Sky is magnifysent and amazing writer.I cannot wait to read more of there books.Keep up the great work. You should definitely read this book. Can't wait for the next book
Wow this version of Melanie and Raven's story is amazing. I never took much stock in Melanie since she seemed "childish" in the first book but her perspective on the events that happened made me change my mind. I am so excited for more of her and Fender.
Siento que no era necesario este libro, aunque hay datos interesantes, se pudo haber agregado a la primera historia y hacer la serie con 3 o 4. Pero solo de Fender y Melanie es muy poco material.
This book is so amazing. Sensual and erotic. Spellbinding. The writing superb. You can’t stop reading. You’re breathless waiting to see what fender does next. Can’t wait for the next instalment.
Y’all, I feel bad because I love Penelope Sky. But this book was not it for me. I FORCED myself to finish it. I really wanted to just leave it alone but I hate not finishing books… I wish I had. I hate Melanie like no other, she has no personality, no backbone. She’s so ugh. Just a pretty face🙄 I’m not even gonna bother with book 2 of this duet. HOWEVER, our girl Raven is such a QUEEN ☺️ she should have been the countess IMO but whatever 🥴 gosh I hate Melanie , sorry Penelope 😔
Hated Melanie, in the first two books. Thought if I read her pov it might change my mind but nope. She was bratty, immature and had no redeemable qualities. It’s amazing to me that Fender was even tried to be made redeemable. He should have died. Literally no excuse for what he had done to all those women. Sickening really
I didn't like the female character in this 2 book series. She too weak and submissive, nothing like her sister. Had a hard time reading and not predicting her weak reaction. Not my favorite read, sadly.
The first two installments of this series were about Magnus and Raven – we watched how the actions on an ill-fated night by Melanie ended up getting them captured and sent to a camp to help a drug lord. We watched Raven’s never ending quest for freedom, and Melanie’s guilt for getting the captured, how she follows Raven where ever she goes, but at the same time we watched how the Boss – Fender took a liking to Melanie, and this is what we get in the second half of the series.
Where this third installment picks up is the first time that Fender sets his eyes on Melanie at the camp. He’s been snared by her beauty – and even though he’s always surrounded himself with beautiful women, there’s something about Melanie that soars above and beyond. He wants to give her comforts at camp that he’s never given to any other woman that was brought there. He wants to take care of her and wants to ‘own’ her in a sense, but he won’t do it unless she’s willing. so we spend much of the front half of this story watching how this slowly begins to happen.
Melanie on the other hand is stuck in this limbo of truly doing what’s right given the situation, and yet fighting what her body is telling her. She’s afraid of him, yet Fender continues to remind her that he won’t hurt her or force her to do anything. She wants to get her freedom back and she more than anything wants Raven’s freedom. If only her sister didn’t constantly cause trouble….maybe that would be possible.
Over time we watch the relationship develop between Melanie and Fender. There’s still.a significant gray area around what they are and what they can be, but we see that there’s something that’s starting to grow here. Fender continues to share nothing about himself, and broods and is angry all the time, yet Melanie has patience.
Fender takes her back to Paris with him when he leaves camp, and makes it clear that Melanie is his – that she’s not going to go free, but she will have the life that she deserves. We watch the transformation come over Melanie once she’s under the guidance and care of Fender’s household. We see the role that Fender’s butler plays – both with Melanie and with Fender since the relationships there are so complicated.
If you’ll remember from the first two books, there’s the drive and need for Fender to amass more. to be the biggest and the best distributor and he’ll stop at nothing. Magnus was the voice of reason throughout those first two books, but we saw that it didn’t matter. Now we’re getting the chance to see how that played out from the other side, knowing that Fender was stubborn and that nothing good could come out of what he’s trying to do .
If you’ll also remember from the first two books, Magnus managed to help Raven escape the camp and brought her back to Paris. They also went to Fender and asked for Melanie’s release. Fender didn’t think that Mel would actually go, so he allowed it and that’s where we ended this first book of Fender/Melanie’s story. We see what was starting to be an intense romantic relationship come to a crashing halt – and we can only imagine the implications that will result knowing that Fender doesn’t take well to people who lie to him, cross him and take things that he deems to be his. I can’t wait for the next installment to come along since I really need to see how this plays out from a different angle.
** If you haven't read The Chateux and The Camp books in the series, there will be spoilers in my review!
I've read The Chateau and The Camp, which are told from the POV of Magnus and Raven. And I really liked those books. Both characters are well-rounded and strong, and worthy of being the hero and heroine of a book!
This is the first of two books that are told from the POV of Fender and Melanie. And I didn't really care that much for either character in the first two books.
The little preview area for this book at the end of The Camp in my Kindle made it seem like you would learn that there's more strength, etc. to Melanie than you might think. But so far, I don't see it. She has no real substance. When we got her POV in this book, I thought there would be a lot more of her being a little cunning and clever in her dealings with Fender to get him to agree with things that would help her help Raven. She's not the strong personality or fighter that her sister is, but she breaks down and falls for Fender so quickly.... Just because he doesn't force her??!! She just doesn't do enough to get her sister out of the horrible situation - she'll ask him, he says no, and she puts on a pretty dress he bought her and falls into bed at night. And that's not what I'm looking for in a book heroine.
And if one is supposed to think Fender is such a strong and smart leader, I don't see how he can fall so hard so fast for vapid little Melanie no matter how beautiful she is. And if all it's supposed to be is that Fender wants all the trappings (wealth and power and the perfect woman on his arm) and for everyone to be envious of those trappings, then he's not the book hero for me! And Magnus beats him hands down!!
Having said that, it's sort of ridiculous how Fender treats Raven. Why would any guy who's supposed to be so smart think that his woman will overlook the way he treats her sister? How does he think he could kill Raven and still have Melanie in his life (willingly)?? And after what happened to his other siblings, he should totally understand that killing/not freeing her sister is not the way to ensure Melanie's love, no matter how necessary he thinks it is not to appear weak to his men. Add to that, it should become clear after a while that his brother has a thing for Raven, even if it's taking him a while to say it's love. So I understand that Fender can't look weak in front of his men. But surely he and Magnus could figure out a way to make it appear Raven died, so she could return to Paris and be reunited with her sister without the guards ever knowing they released her.
And there is just something off about the whole relationship between Fender and Magnus. Fender keeps saying his brother is the only person he can really trust, and yet he's so demeaning to him through all these books. I mean, come on, he actually disfigures Magnus!!! Even though Magnus admits he should be punished, that just seemed like something you wouldn't do to a brother you love!! So far, my opinion of Fender isn't improved by hearing more of his thoughts on the things that happened in the earlier books of the series. Perhaps my opinion will change after I read the last book, but I have my doubts

So having read both the Chateau and The Camp I found myself loving the darkly gorgeous but guiltily kind heart Magnus… but his brother, Fender was darker, more dangerous and vengeful. He’s driven by greed and the need for power and dominance. There is nothing more important than his thirst for more money and power through the terrible labour camp and drug trafficking… until his eyes fall on one of his new prisoners/workers, Melanie.
The trouble is, she is the sister of a woman who is a continual thorn in his side. Raven. A woman who detests and defies him at every opportunity. The only way to have Melanie for himself is the lure her away from Raven’s influence.
If you have already read the previous two books, you’ll already know what is ahead… so in many ways, there’s no surprises because the plot is already fixed. What this book shows is what we, as the reader, was unable to see and understand whilst Raven and Magnus’s relationship bloomed in the camp.
Because of what we think we know about Fender, we believe him to be bullish, brutal and dangerous, but that isn’t all that he is. At least not to Melanie.
Unlike the two previous books, each chapter flicks between the two characters instead from just one of their perspectives. This gives you a clear idea of how the other feels. There’s no second guessing, which is good, because in all honesty, you never know what Fender is thinking and sometimes it surprises you at just how sweet and romantic such a cut throat, cold hearted man can be.
I also found myself liking Melanie more than I thought. Both sisters feel like the other one is favoured one. Melanie was always portrayed as the selfish, airhead with the pretty face but no substance; whereas Raven was the intelligent, pragmatic realist that always felt like she was cleaning up her sisters messes. But, after this book, I no longer feel indifferent to Melanie. She’s far more than we were led to believe and I actually really feel for her. She’s torn between the man man she loves and the sister she feels indebted to.
Fender… well, while I’m not sure I like him quite as much as Magnus - he has definitely grown on me as I’ve seen his character come through. But things are about to go more than a little pear shaped. It’s going to be interesting to see how Fender deals with what’s ahead. We already know what’s on the horizon… but how will Melanie win back his heart after her betrayal.
Great concept and idea to have two stories running side by side. I’d almost suggest making this book 2 and The Camp book 3 so that it keeps some of the suspense. But it’s still brilliant even knowing where it’s all heading. Can’t wait to read book 4.
*Untranslated French phrases. If I didn't own the ebook as well I definitely would've returned this audiobook because of this. It's quite frustrating to have to go to the ebook for translation.
Audible review. Dual POV. Book 3 in the Chateau series. Cliffhanger. Both narrators did a great job. Captor/Captive romance. Content warnings: kidnapping; slave labor; murder; starvation.
Melanie was kidnapped and drugged then taken to a slave camp to package cocaine with Raven, her older sister. Melanie is submissive, beautiful, and kind but very naive and quite dim. When Fender, the boss of the camp, makes a surprise visit he is instantly drawn to Melanie, he moves her into her own cabin, and pursues her until she gives in to his advances. Raven is set on escaping the camp and liberating all of the kidnapped women and eventually she escapes her cabin, breaks into Melanie's cabin and the two runaway in a blizzard only to be captured. Raven is forced to stay at the camp and Fender takes Melanie to his palace in France. Fender's butler is in love with him and therefore his jealousy leads him to be extremely rude and petty to Melanie. Fender falls deeply for Melanie but Melanie needs her sister to be free, she eventually convinces Fender to set Raven free but by the time he actually plans to set her free she escapes. After searching for her for days, intent on killing her Fender gives up, and returns home to Melanie. Melanie makes him promise that whether she returns or not that he will not retaliate against Raven. Fender agrees believing she's dead. Magnus arrives at Fender's home with Raven and insists Fender set Melanie free, believing Melanie loves him and won't leave he agrees but Melanie leaves with Magnus and Raven. JP

The Boss - is the events around the same time as the Chateau but from the point of view of Melanie and Fender - The Boss. I loved reading the other side of the story!
This gives more detail into who Fender really is and why he is the way he is. In the Chateau, we knew Melanie but from Raven's view. The Boss breaks Melanie down and she is not an airhead.
Fender finds Melaine in the camp and thinks she is the most beautiful woman he has ever seen and decides to make her his. However, he does not force her to do anything but rather he waits and cares as much as he can inside the camp. I honestly thought I would hate Fender, but even though he runs an awful camp he has an interesting side. He brings out the best in Melaine and he has fallen in love with her. Fender does not negotiate with anyone but finds himself making promises to Melanie regarding her sister.
Melanie feels all the guilt for getting herself and her sister in the camp. She sees Fender's interest in her as a way to negotiate to get her sister out. But will she develop feelings for the man who is responsible for the changes in the sisters' life?
I can't wait to read more of their story in the Palace.
Reasons I enjoyed this book: Steamy, Page-turner, Easy-to-read, Unpredictable, Entertaining
“The Boss” from the chateau series. OH MY GOODNESS! Great love story and heartbreaking at the same time. I never thought I would see Fender in a different light as he is with Melanie. He is loving and kind with her but still stern and commanding. She fell in love with her captor and doesn’t understand the feelings she has toward him especially what he does for a living. He gave her everything plus his love for her. She has seen a totally different side to Fender. She longed to see her sister and to keep her safe. Fender finally made one promise to her that he would not kill Raven for all the mess she has made and her attempted escapes. Raven never gave up escaping the camp. Fender gave Magnus the choice to have Raven, the love of his life. One day Raven and Magnus show up and wanted to take her home to Ravens apartment. Melanie has a big decision to make which one will she pick Raven or Fender. Either way it will hurt one of them. I could not put this book down. This book has kept me in suspense, wanting more, and two people who fall in love with the most unlikely of situations. I love the “The Chateau Series. Read the book “The Boss” and see what happens with Fender and Melanie.
Penelope has a way of making me feel for the enemy. Always has! I hated Fender. He was the devil himself but now I understand his inner workings and am growing a soft spot for him. Now I’m conflicted. This book provides me with a lot more sympathy for him and maybe a little more understanding as to why he is the way he is. Funny fact, although he likes to believe it, he is no different than his Brother Magnus. It’s so funny that he refuses to see the similarities, although Magnus don’t have all this arrogance and greed. And my good, I truly wish that Melanie would grow a backbone. It’s hard to read about a weak heroine but I guess she’s always been “the baby” and required too much attention. But, come on!!! Overall, the book is a page turner. I’m happy to see what’s in Fender’s head more than anything.
Yet another fantastic addition to the series. While I loved Magnus and Raven story I'm having a hard time warm up to Fender and Melanie story. I'm sorry but I found Fender to be extremely annoying and while I'm trying to see beyond his greed and arrogant I can see his obsessive passion for Melanie. His need for her light. As for Melanie all I see is a shallow, beautiful, selfish, and a weak submissive with no backbone. Because of her sister's Raven is in the predicament that she's in. As I continue to read this book I still have lots of mixed feelings I'm hoping maybe by the next book my mood will change. Overall a great read looking forward for the next book I'm series. As always my reviews are totally voluntarily and no monetary compensation was received and the opinions I have expressed are my own.
This is a spectacular book. In this one we get Fender and Melanie's POVs. This book will grab you and not let go till you have read the last word. The characters are complex and have deep rooted feelings, rituals/habits, they have a deep love for their siblings even if Fender can not or will not admit it. Melanie has caught his eye and he wants her. Will he bend for her? Will he forgive those that let him down? Can Melanie love her captor? Is Fender capable of loving her? Check out the series and this book! It is so worth it! This book is filled with danger, fear, desires, betrayal, grudges and more. We see how the camp is viewed by these two. One who built it and the one that suffers as a worker. How far will you go for freedom? Forgiveness? Love? Respect? Find out how far Fender and Melanie were willing to go! You won't regret it. I know I didn't. Can not wait for the next book!
Absolutely brilliant! I just can't help but love Penelope Sky's books.
The Boss, runs along the same timeline as The Chateau, so we already have one side of this story, but this is Fender and Melanie's POV.
I loved having the story from a different perspective. Finding out how Fender operated, with his no negotiating rule, his possessiveness with Melanie and his hatred of Raven. How Melanie tries her hardest to free her sister from the camp while at the same time trying to work out how she feels about her captor, the man who takes care of her.
I honestly thought I was going to truly hate Fender all the way through after what we've already discovered about him, but Penelope Sky has a way of making you feel for these bad guys and by the end I started to develop a soft spot for him. I wonder if that soft spot grows even more in The Palace - I'll soon find out.
The Boss was a bit different. But in the style of Penelope Sky she gave us the back story of the man who is behind The Camp. The man who is ruthless and uncaring for anyone or anything. But is he really that way or just a man of circumstances? No one can make you feel sympathy for the bad guy like Penelope, she just writes a story that makes you see all sides of everyone and gives us hope that everyone can be brought back to the light. I totally enjoyed getting Fenders sides and seeing how Melanie was viewed by him. Melanie was another mystery to be solved and I believe she has a huge heart but like Fender is a product of her background. I’m looking forward to the next installment and seeing how and where this story is going.
“While she brought passion and fire into my life, she also gave me peace. I’d never known peace.”
This book is dual POV it differs greatly from the first two books of the series, as they’re in single POV. Must read books one and two for context.
I really hoped this book would shed light on Fender and Melanie but we’re not given insight to their relationship. It isn’t organic nor is his hatred against Raven, Melanie’s sister. So far Fender despises Raven for being ugly and strong willed and he’s infatuated with Melanie because she’s pretty. 🤷🏻♀️
Here’s to book 4, The Palace, hopefully we will get more perspective on the shift in relationships and family ties (Magnus + Fender and Raven + Melanie).
4.2 stars. I'm comparing this book to the 1st two in the series, and Fender and Melanie's story just doesn't measure up to Raven and Magnus's story, so i'm probably biased.
They come across how they are described in the previous books. Melanie is content to do nothing but wear makeup and nice clothes, read, and eat gourmet meals all day and have sex with Fender every night w/o doing much. Fender seems content with this as well because she sooo beautiful. Although M is loyal to her sister, she's generally weak and not interesting at all. Typical trophy wife material but they seem to fit what eachother is looking for in a parter so 🤷. Just makes them not as interesting to read about as Raven and Magnus.
For whatever reason book 3 did not pick up we’re booked two left off. It’s as though the author wanted to rewrite parts of it and even though at first it was a little confusing, I quickly fell into the pattern of the plot and actually thought it was better. This story is so gripping and compelling and the characters are so complex that you feel a part of their lives.Penelope sky is one of my favorite writers and even though this book is a bit different from her others, she does an outstanding job and I absolutely love the book and can’t wait for the next one.
