Tracey Davenport was only seventeen when she had her daughter, Lauren, and has proudly raised her as a single mom. Now that Lauren is seventeen herself, Tracey is pleased to see that her daughter has taken her advice to Lauren wants to wait instead of having sex with Aaron, a college student and her first real boyfriend. But Lauren’s decision causes a chain reaction that no one could have anticipated. In a few chance encounters, sparks fly between thirtysomething Tracey and twentysomething Aaron. Coming off yet another disappointing relationship with a cheating bachelor her own age, Tracey is surprised to find that her daughter’s boyfriend is mature and understanding beyond his years, and Aaron discovers that his girlfriend’s mom is smart, womanly, and, well, very sexy. Eventually, what begins as a harmless flirtation turns into something much, much hotter. And that’s when things really get complicated . . .
Told in the alternating voices of the three lovers, My Daughter’s Boyfriend is the spicy tale of an impossibly tricky love triangle, full of sharp, lively observations about mothers and daughters, black men and women, and the truth about love and lust. Audacious and compelling, it’s the book everyone will be talking about.
Basically I became interested in becoming a writer after reading Terry McMillan’s novel Disappearing Acts. In 2004 my author dreams were realized via the release of my controversial debut novel My Daughter’s Boyfriend, the story of a 34-year old single mother that becomes attracted to her teenage daughter’s boyfriend.
I love writing about marriage, infidelity, juicy love triangles, family, romance, women's issues, and male/female relationships. It never gets boring to write about what human beings go through.
My novels make you think and feel! If it doesn't do that, I haven't done my job.
My novels/interviews have been featured in USA Today, Black Beat Magazine, Publishers Weekly, Jewel Magazine, Today's Black Woman, Vibe Vixen, Quarterly Black Review, Booking Matters Magazine, Essence magazine, Ebony magazine, Black Expressions Book Club, among others.
If I were required to use only one word to describe this book, it would be `disturbing'. MY DAUGHTER'S BOYFRIEND is written in the voices of the three main characters caught up in an unsettling love triangle. Tracey Davenport, single mother to Lauren gets involved with Aaron, Lauren's 20-something boyfriend.
At 17, Lauren is a good kid and follows all rules, despite her mother's `do as I say, not as I do' attitude. She is contemplating taking the next step with Aaron, by giving herself completely to him. Even though they only have been going out for a little more than a few months, she truly loves him, and he is the first real boyfriend she's had. Her mother feels as though she should wait, as she doesn't want her only daughter to get pregnant at such a young age the way she did.
Tracey's relationship rap sheet isn't a good one. Every guy she's been involved with has dropped her like a hot potato. But with Steven, she felt that this time, she'd struck gold. No man has ever made her feel so loved before, and she thinks that he is definitely "the one". Unfortunately, that relationship suffers the same fate as the ones before, leaving Tracey feeling dejected, unwanted and unloved.
In Aaron she finds something different. Though he is young in age, his actions speak volumes, and his attentiveness soothes her broken heart. She finds this young man to be more understanding, sensitive and extremely mature. Before we know it, Aaron and Tracey are caught in a whirlwind of emotions, secretly meeting and being together behind Lauren's back.
I could not stand Tracey. She was selfish, needy and above all crazy What kind of mother would do the things she did to her child? She disgusted me, and even though she started to find herself in the end, I couldn't get past the resentment I had towards her as the reader.
Although I found this book to be very real and poetically written, there were parts of the story that were left to hang in the balance.
Don't let the cover fool you. It's not a really hot or sexy book. Well based on the title, you'd expect this book to be really scandalous, and I suppose it is considering the 30-something heroine gets it on with the 21 year old boyfriend of her teenage daughter. However, this book is not the movie The Graduate. This book is slow and boring when it so easily could have been hot and fast-paced. The character development, plot, pacing are all mediocre. The sex is really nothing memorable or varied. The descriptions of the sex scenes had me laughing and I don't think that's what the author intended. Here's an example,
"Her vagina felt like a bed of tangled roses after a light rain; furry yet slippery yet wet. And even though she begged and pleaded with me to go down on her, my nose and mouth weren't about to go anywhere near her Petrified Forest."
Petrified Forest?! I started laughing at that. It's not nice to refer to your lady's private bits as an ancient forest.
This book is nothing special. The heroine is not one you'd root for. She is very needy and goes after this one particular man, not the hero, even when he has repeatedly cheated on her and tells her he doesn't want her anymore.
The young college student hero is either mature beyond his years in some scenes or really juvenile. His character is pretty inconsistent.
It's about a 17 year old that's allowed to date a 21 year old. Her mother is trifling as can be. It's like it could be someone's dirty little secret in print. I think the author is trying to ease her conscience...or not. LOL.
Update: the author decided she needed to defend herself. It still sucked. The end. 🤷🏽♀️ Years later.
First off, this book is disturbing. I would say it’s hard to imagine a mother lusting after her daughter’s boyfriend, but I’ve read too many real stories like this.
Tracey is beyond insecure. She’s so insecure that she’s willing to lose her relationship with her daughter over a boy that’s half her age. Tracey secretly envies her daughter. I mean, she gave birth to Lauren when she was 15 years old. Lauren’s father abandoned them because Tracey put him on child support. You can tell that Tracey resents Lauren for “taking away her youth”.
The only reason Aaron paid any attention to Tracey is because Tracey’s insecurities are easy to pick up on. Lauren wasn’t having sex with him due to not being ready. Instead of being a good boyfriend and waiting until she is comfortable, he decides to look at her mother!
Aaron and Tracey were so pathetic and desperate that they were booking hotels to hook up. While lying and hiding from poor Lauren. In a way, Lauren should have picked up on the signs in the beginning. But what teenage girl will believe her mother is such a loser that she’d go after her daughter’s boyfriend?
Tracey kept going after Steve even when he showed her he was no longer interested. Sure, Steve played games with her and made her think he was still interested. But, he took advantage of her due to the blatant insecurities that she has. Steve embarsssed her numerous times, yet she’d still run to him in a heartbeat. She kept blaming Steve for her ending up with Aaron to avoid taking accountability for the way she hurt her daughter.
The ending of this book was a joke. It ended with Tracey and Lauren reuniting after attending a mother and daughter church retreat. They were back on good terms without Aaron in their lives. The only reason Tracey put effort in with Lauren was because Aaron’s father was dying and he didn’t have time for her. If Aaron’s father wasn’t dying, Tracey would’ve continued to flaunt him all in Lauren’s face.

Tracey Kendricks is sick, twisted and weak minded in the self esteem department!!!After strongly instilling the importance of waiting to have sex in her 17 year old daughter's mind and giving up on men her own age, Tracey becomes weak to her daughter's first boyfriend Aaron's flirtateous compliments. The sad part is, once discovered Tracey shows pain, remorse and confusion yet continues on with the sexcapades and further risk losing her relationship with her daughter!!!!! This novel reads like a great fast paced rollercoaster.......Up, down, loop to loop and full of lots excitement!!!!! Now that it's over, I can't wait to see what more Cydney Rax has to offer.
If I could give this book 0 stars, I would. I detested the characters, especially Tracey. She is a weak, ridiculous woman who falls for her daughters boyfriend. She has absolutely no self esteem and drove me crazy with her bullshit. I forced myself to finish the book, hoping that there would be some redeeming mg factor to it. There was not. It's just terrible.
I wasn't a fan of the writing "style". Some of the phrases and metaphors seem archaic, and other times the writing seems very immature or juvenile. It's as though this was a first novel/written by a novice. The story was just okay. Lots of jumping around.
The title and cover may act as a deterrent from reading this book. It almost did for me. In my opinion, the overly sexualized cover art gives the impression that this is an erotic genre book. There are intimate scenes but it’s not erotic. The title gives the impression that this will be a garbage narrative along the lines of daytime talk shows like the old Jerry Springer show. A little bit. Let me be honest. There is a lot of drama. And the situations that the protagonist puts herself into are a steaming hot mess. I say she puts herself into vs finds herself in, because this woman is the queen of horrible choices. I found myself fussing, shaking my head and talking back to this book the entire time. I’m not condoning the protagonists behavior. It was disgusting and selfish. But I’ve read crime novels and thrillers with way worse characters. However, there is a story here. It does keep the attention. You do feel compelled to keep reading even if it’s to see what other drama and messy things are going to happen. The story is crazy. But there is a story and the author tries to bring a level of correction and resolution at the end.
This is definitely not of a genre that I normally read but it kept me distracted from the over stimulation going on in the media of our current crazy world.

i wasnt sure what i was expecting from this book but what i got wastn it. i felt like i was reading an episode of the jerry springer show in some parts.
Just finish reading this book and was a little upset to think a mother could stoop to a level and hurt her child like that by sleeping around with her boyfriend. Ok book.
I didn’t like the mom for sleeping with her daughters boyfriend, but it shows anybody can be vulnerable. It all turned out good in the end. God is good all the time.
I am pushing myself to read outside of my usual interest/comfort zone, so this was a bit of a leap for me, but, all in all, I'm glad I read it. I can see this as being fun, titillating, escapist reading for some, and I won't deny anyone an experience they enjoy. For me personally, the writing was a little basic and bland after reading some more literary works, but I would classify the style in the same straightforward, no-frills, character-and-plot-focused vein of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series. The story itself was okay -- a little über-cougarific fantasy and a little gross and unsettling for my personal tastes (even if legally okay, your offspring's s.o. should be off-limits) -- but it wasn't a bad read. My reading experience was a solid two-and-a-half stars, rounded up because this genre romance didn't fall prey to super-awkward sexytime euphemisms.
