Isaac Watts was an English hymnwriter, theologian and logician. A prolific and popular hymnwriter, he was recognised as the "Father of English Hymnody", credited with some 650 hymns. Many of his hymns remain in use today, and have been translated into many languages.

Watts was the author of a text book on logic which was particularly popular; its full title was, Logic, or The Right Use of Reason in the Enquiry After Truth With a Variety of Rules to Guard Against Error in the Affairs of Religion and Human Life, as well as in the Sciences. This was first published in 1724, and its popularity ensured that it went through twenty editions. Isaac Watts' Logic became the standard text on logic at Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard and Yale; being used at Oxford University for well over 100 years.

This book enriches my devotion time incredibly. Dr. Watts had a way with words that few else ever have. He is responsible for timeless, beautiful God-glorifying hymns such as: Joy to the World, Jesus Shall Reign, Alas and Did My Savior Bleed, When I Survey the Wonderous Cross, and many more. This hymnal contains 650 of his hymns, each one with precious gospel truth. What I love about Dr. Watts, was that he was not an ivory tower lyric writer, but a pastor writing for his congregation. Each Sunday, Dr. Watts would preach to his people, and prepare a hymn based on the same text he would preach from. After his sermon, he would lead his people in singing the hymn. What a pastor! Read these delightful, poetic reflections on our Triune God, from a pastor who loved Christ' church.

This book makes me abound in worship for God everytime I read selections. I know it's not everyone's "cup of tea," but I think Watts is a genius. I rarely get on my knees and worship during my quiet times with God, but this book gets me there often. I just sit and let the words sink in....ah!

This book has been and will continue to be one of the best devotionals I've ever read. I love hymns. I love the picture of God and humanity that can be seen through the poetic paintings of a good hymnal.
