Dangerous intrigue, forbidden passion, and ominous magic. And that’s just on my first day.

As the newest recruit at the Institute of Unpredictable Magic, I’m determined to prove I have what it takes to be part of this elite team of supernaturals who protect the magical community. But I didn’t count on sparks flying between me and my new partner, Logan, the sex-on-a-stick mage who’s as competitive as I am.

I also didn’t count on our first assignment together turning into an absolute disaster.

Now we’re in a race against the clock to uncover the whereabouts of a potentially dangerous magic user with powers no one’s ever seen before. The only two people who can help us are Nick, a millionaire playboy whose easy charm throws me completely off-balance, and Saint, a darkly handsome convict with a mysterious past.

I thought developing feelings for one of my co-workers was bad, but as the four of us are forced to rely on each other, I can’t deny that I’m drawn to Nick and Saint too.

And as the danger of our mission grows, I realize I’m about to be in way over my head—in more ways than one.

You know how they say trouble always comes in threes?

Well, I think I know exactly who my three are.

Shadow is the first book in the Institute of Unpredictable Magic series, a medium-burn reverse harem story featuring a nerdy, feisty woman and the three sexy men who fall in love with her.

It was kickass, exciting and of course all the hot men.
Can't wait for the next book!

This was an intriguing start to this series but it wasn't anything special and I didn't feel like there wasn't enough development of the love interests. I know this is the first book of a series but I wanted a bit more from this.

In this first book we're introduced to Rae, Logan, Saint, and Nick. Rae is really the the important character in this first book. Logan is introduced pretty early on by Nick isn't introduced until about halfway through and Saint isn't introduced until after the 70% mark. I liked Rae, though I found the repetition of the fact that she's an overachiever somewhat annoying, but I don't know how I feel about the other characters because they were barely a part of the book. I'm definitely hoping to see more development in the next book.

Because of the lack of character development in the lover interests, I didn't really find the relationships to be particularly compelling. Rae had romantic interactions with all three guys by the end of the book but only very, very briefly. This isn't a huge problem for a romance series because these relationships are supposed to continue to develop in other books but this book didn't lay enough groundwork for me to care about these relationships so I'm going to need a lot more from future books. The series that this one spun off of (which I haven't read) was six books long so this series could also run for a long time with a lot more development.

I think I'll probably continue on with this series. The next book comes out in April I think and I'm pretty good at following along with series as they come out. I'm hoping to see a lot more character development in the next few books.

Original review

This book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Sadie Moss!

Shadow is the first book in the Institute of Unpredictable Magic series and tells the story of Raelyn. The Institute of Unpredictable Magic is a spin-off series set in the world of the Academy of Unpredictable Magic series.

I really loved the Academy of Unpredictable Magic series by Sadie Moss and after reading the synopsis, I was so excited to read this book! Shadow was such a good first book, and I cannot wait to read the other books in the series. I really liked getting to know Raelyn and her men, and the story in general was really good and fast paced.

I really liked Raelyn as a character because she’s really determined to be the best and she puts all her effort into things. I also think it’s cute that she doesn’t notice that she gets attention from others. As for the men, I really liked all of them. I liked Logan from the moment we read about him because I kept on smiling while reading about Rae and him. I also really like Nick because he reminds me of my boyfriend. My boyfriend’s name is also Nick and he has dark hair and brown eyes too. Saint is an interesting character, and I cannot wait to read more about him in the second book.

I’m kinda angry at my kindle because I remember annotating and highlighting a few things and I lost all of my notes. I wanted to say a few more specific things about this book but I can’t… Oh well.
Shadow was such a good book, and it was hard to put this one down. I also really liked reading a bit about Elliot and her men again, I miss them so much! I really recommend Shadow (and the Academy of Unpredictable Magic series) and I’m looking forward to reading Fury, the second book in the Institute of Unpredictable Magic series.

Strong, Smart as hell but somewhat of a loner - Raelyn (FMC) gets a chance of a lifetime to work at The Institute of Unpredictable Magic (IUM) after graduation. As an agent for them. Sparks fly between her and fellow applicant - Logan. I liked his easy going, laid-back attitude. It played off well against Rae who was focused and single minded. I loved the addition of Nick & Saint too and the dynamic they brought to the group. I also loved the character overlap of Elliot & her guys from the Academy of Unpredictable Magic series. Its a cracking start to this series and i really enjoyed reading it

If I had to read another brain numbing inner rambling about the h being the best, not having friends because she worked hard to be the best and the way she transforms everything in a competition to compensate her lack of self esteem I would throw my kindle to wall!
Then there's the guy that is awesome and almost has good as her! It's insta love! After 2 weeks where they hardly talked, they dry hump in a public place, then go home and have sex! Another brain hurting rambling on and on about being sex buddies versus work buddies! Enters another awesome guy and I'm out!

Wow!!! 🤩

I'm so happy to be back at the Unpredictable Magical World, with such an amazing world building and plot, that had me hooked since the first page, full of action, magical abilities and a strong, awesome, badass FMC!!! 😍🔥 Rae graduated with honors at Griffin Academy and now that she's got her dream job at IUM, she wants to keep that hard work/no relationships way, she doesn't need them, right??? 🤔 🤨 Real life proves to be harder and more complicated than she thought, and now she's more alike to Elliot Sinclair, her hero and role model... What???... How??? 😳🤯 This installment is a fantastic start of a new series you def don't want to miss, can't wait for the next book!!! ❤️

I'm delighted that we are back in the world of Unpredictable Magic, this time at the Institute of Unpredictable Magic, or IUM. Rae is a new graduate of the school and gets her dream job as an agent with the IUM. Paired with the only agent that could match her, she has to navigate her feelings for Logan and find a new powerful Unpredictable before they can out their community, and undo all the work of Elliott and her men (they feature here but you don't need to read that series, but why would you miss out on it?).
Medium burn as the harem is growing organically and isn't ever overshadowing the main story of the bizarre Unpredictable.
Plenty of magic action. I love Rae's powers!

I really enjoyed this book. I was immediately drawn to Rae and how hard she strives to be the best. I love that the relationships between Rae and her harem/future harem grow so organically and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

DNF - quit at 8%
I didn’t realize that this was part of an on-going series, I thought from the blurb that it was a new series, or at least I think it is. It sounded like it to me, as there’s not much world building going down before I quit. I read book 1 from the original part of the series (Spark -Academy of Unpredictable Magic) & didn’t care for that FMC in that book, because I didn’t continue with that series. There were 6 books from that series, & the FMC in this book must be a secondary character from that series if I were guessing. The flow is slow & the hook is just not there on this book, giving me no desire to keep reading.

At my age (approaching 60), life is way too short & my time is too important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.

Review edit after re-read:
Still enjoyed the book, but randomly the FMC has been renamed, she's now Raelyn for some reason? Not sure what/if any other edits have occurred. And, I found myself getting irritated by the overly repetitive use of the phrase 'Type-A personality'. Not sure why it snagged my brain every time it popped up, but it did.

Love this expansion of the Unpredictable Magic world

Love this expansion of the Unpredictable Magic world! Alexis is a really interesting character - it's good to see a nerdy studious girl get the spotlight for a change. And the guys are all interesting too, as well as hot AF of course 😉

It's a dnf for me (chapter 13).... I just couldn't continue. I felt totally disconnected from the heroine and there was "zero" chemistry with the love interest for me. In addition, i found it a little boring. Maybe i' ll try it again in the future.

Reread. The second time I tried to read it and even if I finished it, it was still a little boring and meh...

Oh wow, where do I start? I know! This author is amazing and I loved this book!!!! It had everything I was looking for. A strong female lead, check. Three swoon worthy men, check. Action that keeps you reading until it's too late to realize the book is over, check....wait, no! My only complaint is that it was over too soon and now I have to wait for the second book.
This is a spin-off series of her Academy of Unpredictable Magic. I did not read that series and it's not necessary in order to understand what's going on in this book. This book stands alone. However, fans of Academy of Unpredictable Magic will appreciate this one because the main characters make an appearance. I'll jump to reading that series next!
Sadie Moss does a great job with the pace and flow of the book. It starts right in with the female lead, Raelyn, finishing her final exam at Griffin and then getting a job offer at The Institute of Unpredictable Magic (IUM), which has been a dream job of hers ever since her magic sparked. Rae is smart, driven and super competitive when it comes to school and basically everything else in her life. She meets the sexy mage, Logan, at IUM and sparks instantly fly. He's also driven and competitive and this turned into a little bit of foreplay for the two of them. The chemistry and steam from these two is what lit my kindle on fire a few times. Rae and Logan are given their first case and they run into a bit of trouble. This leads to IUM bringing in Nick, the millionaire who has charm, humor and is a genius when it comes to science and magic. Also, Saint, a darkly handsome convict with a mysterious past. Rae feels a connection with all of them and I can't blame her because I feel it too. I can't wait to see where this all goes.
Happy reading everyone!

I can’t begin to tell you how excited I was to not only learn that we were getting a new series from Sadie, but also that we were getting a new series set in a world we’ve already visited! I had high hopes for Shadow and it did not disappoint me at all.

Raelyn is a super smart somewhat dorky overachiever (absolutely love her inner ramblings!). She spent her years at the academy just ignoring the social aspect of life and focusing all her attention on her studies and being the absolute best she could be. It paid off, she got her dream job and that is where the story takes off.

“My brain feels like mush, and my heart is beating so hard it might crack a damn rib. It feels like I went for years without asking much of my heart at all, and now all of a sudden, it’s working overtime.”

The guys 😍 Logan, the hot over achiever that gives Raelyn a run for her money with his competitive streak. Nick, the cocky billionaire genius. And Saint, the broody jailbird. No guesses as to which one I instantly took a liking too 🤨

They are banded together to track down an Unpredictable with an untold amount of power. Something suspect is going on and I cannot wait for the story to unfold.

Did I become a little starstruck when we saw familiar faces? You bet I did. I loved that teeny little glimpse and I was right there with Rae.

“She waves at me, and I wave back, trying not to look like a starstruck idiot. She’s so cool and effortlessly badass, and I want to be just like her.”

If you know, you know. 😍

This is a medium burn RH book, so although we meet the guys, this book is setting the tone for what’s to come.

I'm so glad to see another series dealing with Unpredictable magic! After reading the Academy of Unpredictable Magic, it was nice to see some familiar characters pop up as well as the results of their hard work from the previous series and how  people with Unpredictable magic are now more accepted and welcomed in the community instead of shunned or ostracized. Sadie always does such a great job balancing out her characters and making them easy to differentiate between the harem. Each guy has his own strength, making the team work well together despite them all being from different backgrounds. I like how Sadie also brought a bit of taboo to this book with the convict, Saint, being part of the harem similar to the teacher/student relationship in the other series. It just adds a bit more excitement to the story as we wonder what will happen if he has to go back to prison or if anyone finds out about them being involved, even if it is barely anything at the moment. Like the previous series, this one has so much mystery and action to it. At this point the reason behind the crazy unknown Unpredictable with unprecedented powers is exactly that--unpredictable. Is it an experiment gone wrong? A force that absorbs other powers to increase its own capabilities? Something else altogether? It's easy to speculate right now, but this makes this series a thrilling one to dive into. All I'm hoping is that Saint will be able to stick around and help some more. Maybe even prove to the higher ups that he can be reliable and beneficial to the team. Perhaps a probation type of situation? I'd be cool with that.

👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

YES! This book is so good!
Let me start by saying that you DON’T need to read the academy of unpredictable magic to read this series BUT there are some characters you meet in that series that make an appearance in this series but if you don’t want to read it then you’ll still be able to know what’s going on.
This book was everything I was hoping for especially after reading the academy of unpredictable magic and being so in love with it!
Raelyn is an unpredictable who graduates at the top of her class and hopes to get her dream job at the Institute of unpredictable magic (IUM).
When she gets to the IUM she quickly wants to get herself as top recruit throughout the tests they are assigned to see if they have what it takes to handle being field agents.
She finds herself sharing top spot with the only other person who matched her at every turn. Logan.
Sparks fly from the beginning with them😍
Their first mission ends up being more than anyone could have guessed and have to bring in the hep of nick and saint to get the job done and when I tell you that you won’t be disappointed not do I mean it!
What happens when you face something that you’ve never come across before?? There is so much that happens that you’ll have action up until the very end!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 and 🌶🌶/5

Thank you so much Sadie for the opportunity to read Shadow before its release date!

Shadow was imposible to put down, Rae was a great mc, I loved how she wasn't afraid to work hard to get where she wanted to go – sometimes characters with a type-A personality are a little off-putting for me, but Sadie did an amazing job turning Rae relatable and showing us her vulnerability <3 – and her powers are totally badass!

I fell in love with her love interests: Logan, Nick and Saint are great guys in their own way and I wanted to put all of them in my pocket (specially Saint, I want to get to know him a little better, but I love a tourtured hero that finds his home in the mc) <3

About the villain: I have my theories and I'm DYING to know if they are true! And here comes why my rating is 4,5 and not 5 — we saw too little of him in the first book, the ending left me wanting for more, sure, but I felt that Shadow should've been a little bit longer to delve deeper into this part of the plot... alas, if you love a good paranormal rh, with a lot of action and a lovable set of mcs, Shadow is definitely for you!

3.5 stars rounded to 4 stars

I enjoyed this book overall, the FMC is a likable, over-achieving, nerdy type who's gotten her dream job. As part of that job, she ends up working with multiple attractive and interesting men that she has an instant connection with. We get a lot of insight into one of the men in this first book and hints of the other two's personalities. There is steam, so I would say this is a medium burn, and the guys are aware of her interest in all of them.

There is a lot of inner monologue/thoughts from the FMC (this is single POV), which usually bothers me, but I liked the characters and was intrigued by the plot enough that I still enjoyed the book. The first assignment that's assigned takes a weirdly mysterious and dangerous turn and the action of that part of the story had me flipping pages to see what would happen. The book does end with a lead-in to the next book, more than a cliffhanger in my opinion. No one's in mortal danger, for example. I will definitely be checking out book two!

Sadie Moss didn't disappoint at all with Shadow!!
Every detail in the beginning set the story up perfectly and made me feel like I've know Raelyn forever. And I'm in love with her inner voice's snarkiness. Then once Logan comes along....holy hell!!! Their chemistry is undeniable and the passion between the both of them....WOW!!! My heart was beating out of my chest with all the steaminess!!
Everything about this first book flowed together so perfectly and I love how Nick and Saint come to be a part of the group with Raelyn and Logan. I won't give anything away, but the interactions between these four had me laughing out loud, gasping, holding my breath, and even breaking my heart a little bit.
I'm dying to see how things progress between all of them in the next book!!!

I was so excited when I seen that Sadie Moss was releasing a new series Institute of Unpredictable Magic! Shadow is book one and this series and I was hooked from page one! This author always draws me in with her amazing storylines. I am so excited to be back in the Unpredictable Magic world it’s absolutely one of my all time favorites!

Raelyn our FMC just graduating from Griffin Academy and she got a job at IUM! She is a strong and smart character, her growth in the book was huge! This book has amazing character development, action, magic and hot guys what more could you ask for!!!🔥

I truly loved this book and cannot wait for Fury!

Seriously how does Sadie Moss do it? She ensnares you from the first sentence and doesn’t let you go the whole read! Sometimes when you read a lot of books from the same author you realize that their characters are all very similar; this never happens with Sadie Moss. Every one of her characters are original and distinct. As always the men have very different and flushed-out personalities and it becomes harder and harder to pick a favorite....although one would argue that that’s the whole point. Intriguing, clever, hot and immensely enjoyable; I cannot wait for the next book to continue this adventure.

I love the continuation of the Unpredictable magic story. Having the Institute of Unpredictable Magic pickup years after the big show down in the Academy of Unpredictable Magic series is awesome and I love this new story line! I really like Rae. Her determination and dedication are admirable and I hope to see her open up more and learn to let her hair down. I love what we have seen of the guys so far and can’t wait to learn more about Saint and see more of Nick’s playful personality. I’m really looking forward to the next book! That ending had me like, “WTF?!” Exciting start to the IUM series!

As a spin off of one of Sadie Moss’ earlier series I had high hopes, and this book delivered. I love Rae and I think a lot of other readers will too. She’s determined, competitive, and a nerd (she reminds me of myself, just cooler). Her interactions with Logan, Saint, and Nick seem genuine and valid, including her blow ups and her passion. I’m excited for the rest of this series as this book ends on a cliffhanger. I’ve already put book two on my wish list.
I received an ARC of this book but this review is my own. I 100% recommend this book to anyone who wants to connect with the main character.

What can I say other than I am so immensely happy to return to the world of the Unpredictable Magic Academy?
This book was an absolute delight to read.
Personally, I read each book in the Unpredictable Magic Academy series and enjoyed every one of them tremendously but you don’t have to have read them to enjoy this series although honestly, you should read them because they are so good.
Sadie Moss is one of my favourite RH/Whychoose romance authors for good reason.
She creates fantastic worlds with moving, gripping characters and throws in action packed suspense and thrills along with heat and romance.
I can’t wait to catch up with Rae and her new team in the next book.

Fun!

A spin off from the other series set in this world, this one picks up a few years after the explosive events at Griffon Academy. Unpredictable magic is accepted now, at least on the surface. Though THIS book didn’t delve into those that still fear it, I am sure there are those that still do - it was too ingrained. Now, we are venturing into the institute, and the work they do there. A new recruit, and her not quite rag tag team, have to team up to bring a powerful unpredictable in - and it, of course, goes very wrong.

Medium burn, PNR RH, FMMM (for now?), cliffhanger ending.

Unpredictable Magic Continues!!!

I took a quick break between reading the previous series and this one, and I got sucked right back in again! Sadie Moss is such an amazing author who can create so many characters with such depth, various personalities, unique backgrounds, and really draw you in. Some books don't have much of a storyline. It's rushed, doesn't make much sense, has too many steamy scenes (which I enjoy, but not if there's no PLOT behind it), but you get the whole shebang here! :)

I highly recommend!! (But check out the series before this with Elliott Sinclair first if you haven't!)

Another Amazing book by Sadie Moss! I am so happy that she decided to continue with the Unpredictable Magic world! Rae is a strong FMC that is trying to focus on her career until she meets her teammates who are helping to solve a mysterious unpredictable magic occurrence. Rae learns there is more to life then just work as she navigates the emotional rollercoaster of being professional and being intimate. I could not put the book down as it pulled me back into the amazing Unpredictable Magic world. Fabulous! I cannot wait to see what happens next! 🖤💜

I love Rae. She is a really strong character. She isn't afraid to fight for what she wants. Working for the Academy of Unpredictable Magic is her dream. Little does she know how hard things are really going to be. Logan is such a sweetie. I love him. He's not afraid to show his feelings for Rae or give her the space she needs to figure out what she wants. Their first job is a real doozy. They are going to have their work cut out for them. I can't wait to learn more of Saint's backstory. He seems as if he has been hurt. I'm loving this new series.

Great start

This was a great start to the series. Rae just graduated from the Academy and got Jer dream job. She has loads of chemistry with her partner Logan. She also has chemistry with Nick, a rich, play boy scientist and Saint, a convict they get out of prison to help with their hunt of a hugely powerful magic user. Medium burn, fast paced storyline interesting dialogue that flows, steam and plenty of chemistry. Ends in cliffhanger and will need to be read in order. Told from h POV. Language and adult scenarios in this RH.

Great book - looking forward to reading book 2 next

I really enjoyed this book. I read this straight after clash.
It’s got really great new characters, love their backgrounds and personalities... oh and great sexual tension between them.
Rae is a excellent choice for main character.
Really liked that some of the characters for Academy of unpredictable Magic were also minor roles in this book.
Overall a great first book to the series, looking forward to book two.

Any magic lover will adore this new book by Sadie moss. It's hot, so interesting and will give you heart stopping action. I loved this magic world so much. I was hooked from the very start and before I knew it, I'd reached the last page. I need more Raelyn and her men! The writing style of Moss is so enchanting and flows with ease, the details are just right and there's originality in the plot. Beautiful read!
