Got this as a gift. Mostly puts Star Trek themed names to already existing recipes. It is definitely for a big Star Trek fan as it has lots of references to every TV show, including in the drink instructions.
Also for the person who (inexplicably) finds themselves with blue curaçao, cherry liquor and/or gomme syrup as a large portion of recipes contains at least one of these ingredients.
I've been coming down hard on some of the supplementary Star Trek books released by Eaglemoss/Hero Collector for being droll or overly silly. I was initially worried about his book as well for similar reasons, but it turned out that it's a very well-thought-out book with some intriguing mixes.
The book is a legitimate collection of Star Trek-inspired drinks of all sorts. But what really makes it interesting is how much thought was put into curating the cocktail mixes to match particular characters or story references. In addition, the whole book is organized into different sections to cover all sorts of cases when such drinks would be appropriate ranging from first-time meetings (First Contact) or for big-time parties (Neelix's Celebration Cocktails).
I really enjoyed going through the sort of rationale of each drink along with the little interludes that end each chapter with snippets of dialog from different Star Trek episodes or movies. And with luck, we'll be able to actually try all these cocktails for ourselves for a fun taste of the future.
Gave this as a gift to my uncle for his birthday. What a treat!! The illustrations and tongue-in-cheek nods to the show were as excellent as I had hoped for. Some of the drinks listed were just very basic things like a John Daly but with a different name; others were pulled straight from Quark's bar, but with the ingredients we can find in our local supermarket. All in all, a super fun novelty gift.
While this book may be great for the diehard Star Trek fan, it's not quite what I expected.
The book has quotes and information about alcohol as an introduction. There are recipes for drinks that are mostly existing drinks with Star Trek names added and a quote from the show to go with each drink. Outside of common drinks some of the drink combinations are a bit wild - I don't think I've ever had gromme syrup before, let alone with cherry liquor. Not a book I'd consult regularly for recipes.
This is so cute with mentions to all the different Star Trek shows and some absolutely delicious looking drinks. There are several I will definitely be trying. I did read the whole thing to make sure I could pick out all the ones I want to try. I will be using my special prop replica liquor bottles for sure.
I probably shouldn't rate this. I don't drink alcohol so haven't actually tried any of the recipes. Nice photos of the drinks, and the descriptions are clever, with funny names for the drinks. No non-alcoholic drinks included for us teetotaler Trekkies. Maybe I'll adapt the toasted Tribble marshmallows for a kid's cup of cocoa...
Obviously this rating is not for literary merit, but for what the book was trying to accomplish. If you enjoy puns, drinks and, most importantly, Star Trek, you'll want this on your shelf.
