Jessica Spanyol wrote and illustrated her first story, "Carlo the Giraffe Who Could Not Read," when she was a precocious six and a half years old. As she grew older, her literary ambitions gave way to artistic ones, and she began a career as a fine artist. But the adult Jessica Spanyol, it turned out, could not shake the memory of Carlo the giraffe. So thirty years after its writing, she determined to rework her original story.

As a result, Jessica Spanyol's CARLO LIKES READING retains a delightfully childlike sensibility, with minor alterations and eye-catching artwork added by author thirty years later. "The character Carlo," explains the author, "was based on a blow-up toy giraffe, and the name, 'Carlo,' my brother's best friend." Even Crackers, Carlo's cat, can be traced back to the Spanyol family pet. In CARLO LIKES READING, Carlo the giraffe reads everything he sees. And because his world is covered in labels, there's always a lot of reading to do--Carlo reads labels on the street, in the park, at the market, and even on his dad! "There's plenty here to inspire pointing and identifying action on the part of emerging readers," assures PUBLISHERS WEEKLY, while KIRKUS REVIEWS notes that "this debut is bright, well-conceived, and infectiously enthusiastic."

Carlo (and his creator) made such a splash that readers and reviewers clamored for more -- and Carlo has since starred in CARLO LIKES COUNTING, CARLO LIKES COLORS, and CARLO AND THE REALLY NICE LIBRARIAN. Recently, Jessica Spanyol introduced her readers to a new cast of characters in the picture book, GO BUGS GO!

Jessica Spanyol studied at the Bath Academy of Art, Brighton Polytechnic, and the Royal College of Art. Since then, in addition to writing the Carlo series, she has worked as a theater set designer, a fine artist, and a tutor of illustration, winning the Folio Society Illustration Award and the Painter-Stainers Award. She lives in England with her family.

I received this book from the doctor’s office when I took my daughter in for her 15 month checkup. Anyway this is such an adorable little book. My daughter loves the pictures and looking at the settings from the playground to the museum, and the books at the library.

ROSA LOVES DINOSAURS/ A ROSA LE ENCANTAN LOS DINOSAURIOS is a fun bilingual board book about a love of dinosaurs. With some simple facts, such as dinosaurs had big footprints and that some are plant or meat eaters, this is primarily a fun book about Rosa and her friends who enjoy playing with their dinosaur toys.

What I loved: Rosa is a fantastic character, and I love the way her series features STEM information in an approachable way for young children. With repeating characters across the books, the familiarity adds to the fun for toddlers/preschoolers who are recognizing and appreciating the consistency. The diversity of children is also really great.

This book is written in both English and Spanish, adding to the learning possibilities and making it great for bilingual families. The text is simple throughout, and the font is nice and clear, which is helpful for reading aloud. The simple facts about dinosaurs are included throughout, though this is more a book about play vs dinosaur information.

What left me wanting more: The book does not have a consistent story and each page could almost stand-alone. For instance, on one page spread, Rosa is at a museum and on the facing page, she is at the library, without any connection between those places. Since it is not quite a dinosaur fact book, a more connected plot would help young readers to follow along. That being said, context clues can help slightly older readers to make up their own story about how Rosa is spending her day. Also a small note of caution for sensitive readers, as Rosa tells a little dinosaur to run, because T. Rex is a meat eater (though this may go over some children's heads and/or not bother them).

Final verdict: A cute board book about a love of dinosaurs, ROSA LOVES DINOSAURS is a fun bilingual story with simple dinosaur facts and many friends. Recommend this and other Rosa books for children who enjoy following characters across books!

Rosa is a busy little girl, and she seems to enjoy playing with herself as much as she enjoys playing with her friends. In this particular book, she plays with her toy dinosaurs, even building a place for them to hide and digging up a skeleton. Not only is she intent on learning more about these fascinating creatures through research and visiting a museum, but she makes them a part of her daily routine, even letting them share the bathtub with her and listen to a bedtime story. The fact that she tells the dinosaurs to settle down so she can read a story to them made me smile since it's so much like what a youngster would do. I like this series for its bright colors, simple but affirming message about individuality and self-sufficiency, and the fact that its characters always seem to keep themselves amused rather than expecting others to do so.

The award is the 2019 Amelia Bloomer Award. This book is about a little girl names Rosa who loves playing with toys but, she does not really like “girly toys.” Rosa instead wants to play with dinosaurs and she takes her dinosaurs everywhere with her and wants to teach herself about them. Rosa also has many friends that she enjoys playing with, they are all very diverse and Rosa sees them all as equals. This book teaches children about gender equality by showing that a girl does not have to enjoy things that are geared towards her gender. It teaches children gender equality and the acceptance of people from different backgrounds.

Did this ever spark memories! Like Rosa, my own daughter was a dinosaur enthusiast from a very early age. Many of the scenes in this book are spot on, right down to Rosa's slippers. Also like Rosa, my toddler used real vocabulary when talking about dinosaurs. This board book provides an excellent mirror for young kids who refuse to be trapped by gender-targeted toys. Nice diversity of friends, and of settings. The text is set in a dyslexic-friendly typeface.

This is another story about Rosa and her toys. With her diverse group of friends, Rosa takes her dinosaur action figures on all kinds of adventures. She takes them to run, fly, sit on eggs, play in the bathtub, and more. This is important because the imaginative play is an important piece of development. This book is also good because if the diversity of the friends.

I really enjoy these “Rosa” books, they are cute for young readers. This is another story about Rosa and her toys. She has a diverse group of friends from different cultures and she enjoys running, flying, playing in the bathtub, and more. The Rosa books show a great impact on imagination and what it can do for children. This is why I think these are great books to read to young readers.

Rosa Loves Dinosaurs by Jessica Spanyol is a wonderful book for many reasons. First, Rosa is a female. Secondly, Rosa is a minority. Thirdly, Rosa defies social norms for girls. I love this story and I believe that more stories need to display more characters like Rosa. This is the perfect story for a younger reader.

Rounded up because I just love Rosa's yellow glasses. Of course I also love the diversity and the way the kids are so imaginative when they play with their dinosaur toys, read books about dinos, and visit the museum. I'd be glad to read more in the series.

I read the board book that is not bilingual. It was a nice find at a Little Free Library.

It was ok. Rosa loved one dinosaur more than the others because it was mentioned several times. Otherwise it's short and sweet.

Rosa plays with her dinosaur toys and learns about dinosaurs at the museum. She reads books about dinosaurs, and plays dinosaur games with her friends. At the end of the day, she reads a bedtime story to her dinosaur toys.

This board book is so adorable! The illustrations are really cute and colorful. Sweet little Rosa has a lot of fun playing and learning. It's a simple story that will appeal to little readers, especially if they love dinosaurs as much as Rosa does.

I love that this book is bilingual with Spanish and English text on the page! It makes it so easy to read and share both languages with children.

In this bilingual board book (English & Spanish) the precocious and independent Rosa from previous books is all set to play with her dinosaur toys. But she doesn't want to stay inside; instead, she packs them up and heads outside where she plays with her friends. She also visits a museum, takes note of the enormous size of a dinosaur's footprints, checks out some library resources, and then concludes her very busy day with a bath--for the dinosaurs too--and a bedtime story. With a diverse cast of characters and the appealing Rosa, this board book will be of interest to youngsters as young as three or four. Hearing it read aloud might inspire some of them to engage in imaginative play with their stuffed toys or models and their friends.
