I didn't expect my welcome home to include a mummified body!
After fleeing halfway down the country to get away from my boyfriend-turned-werewolf, I arrive back in my hometown of Briarton, ready to start anew. As a witch, albeit a weak example, it's a pleasure to reconnect with my mother's old coven. Unfortunately, the welcome home sours when we find a body in the woods behind my house.
With a newly appointed supreme keen to avoid the attention of the governing national coven, I volunteer to uncover the culprit behind the despicable crime. A decision made before my oversized familiar and a handsome paranormal investigator start to trample all over the crime scene.
As the case widens, and leads tangle, I must call on all the powers at my disposal to rid the coven of a threat worse than any sanction the national coven could apply. I mean, everything will probably work out okay… then again, pigs might fly.
Willow Mason is the author of Witchy Paranormal Cozy Mysteries.
She lives in a small town in New Zealand, far too close to the beach and fantastic walking trails to get nearly as much work done as she should. Until someone bestows magic powers on her, she'll just keep hoping for the invention of self-cleaning dishes and self-washing clothes.
This book was not bad but lacked some core elements.
Desdemona (the lead) has volunteered to catch a murderer by herself. This is a girl with no transferrable skills to take this on, no friend she can get help from, and no way to keep herself safe. Anyone allowing her to take the case did not make sense to me.
I also had a problem with her personality. Although being a witch is supposed to be a secret, she almost immediately tells three strangers; at different times. At the same time, being aware that the area has had witch Hunters. Being lucky that no one told does not counter increasing the danger. She is a pushover. She tells everyone her personal business, even though she claims she does not want to.
Then there is Jared. You were so scared that you ran from him, leaving behind everything, but is ok with hanging out with him as soon as he hunts you down. Him attacking you, all but forgotten.
Finally, I was bored. I had to try to push through the book.
Desdemona returns to her family home after her now ex-boyfriend gets bitten and turns into a werewolf! Being a witch without powers was hard enough without finding a dead body on your property and being harassed by a cute paranormal investigator and her local coven.
"How To Fly A Pig" is an attempt at a short and cute witchy cozy mystery that I found could've been made better by more character development. It's cute and quirky but lacks the spark it promises. Would I recommend it? Sure if you like cute and quirky. Will, I read more by this author? Absolutely, I love cute quirky paranormal reads!
Maybe it’s just me, but I feel this book just lacked a certain something. I liked the main character and her magical problem (as well as how she unlocked her magic), yet the story felt rushed and everything was simplified to accommodate for the short page count. I think this might have been an awesome story if there had been more depth to the characters, and the paced slowed a bit so the storyline could have been expanded upon.
So while I didn’t love this, I might check out the next book before I call it quits on this series.
The concept was good, but the story was disjointed. The heroine (Des) returns to her childhood home in an effort to be rid of her potentially abusive boyfriend, yet he shows up and she accepts him back into her life, seemingly without hesitation. She takes on the role of detective without any prior experience. The story of her magic is disjointed, as well, as it seems to come and go without apparent reason.. The ending was less than satisfactory,, as well.. Hopefully, others will find it more appealing than I did.

Desi inherits her parents house, so she moves back home. She starts to get some of her magic back. A body is found on her property, and she needs to find out who did it. She had help from her panther familiar Annalise, and her boyfriend Jared who is a werewolf and other witches in the coven.
Des was gone for 16 yrs and her magic was starting again. But why she did not have magic was not her only worry; a dead body, a werwolf boyfriend, and a coven supreme that preferred staying on the sidelines ....
Willow Mason has once again written an unique series
Mason checks all the marks on the must haves in a great paranormal mystery. I've read all of her series and I'm a fan. I love the unique settings in New Zealand as well.
I enjoyed this quick paced mystery. I liked the characters and the story line, however, the problem with listening to the book was the more than and less than signs when the families were talking. It took away from the story. Worth reading.
The storyline sounded cute but fell flat in the actual telling. Characters were lame and not developed. The whole story was rushed, especially at the end.
I enjoyed the book. It could have been a little longer but the story was good, the characters interesting. I would definitely read another book by Ms Mason
