But it wasn’t until 2020 when his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer and facing the fallout of treatment for months through COVID-19, that he had to really lean into the habits he was teaching and put them to the ultimate test. This book vividly outlines the lessons he’s learned, some valuable takeaways, and most importantly how you can use these habits to build your own path to success.<>"For seekers of knowledge who want a concise and enjoyable read that covers the spectrum of philosophy and psychology, Nick Shaw provides a book on leadership and holistic living that is both educational and inspiring."- Daniel Luna, Retired Navy SEAL and Leadership Coach<>"This book feels like it was made for 2020 - a year full of adversity. “Fit For Success: Lessons on Achievement and Leading Your Best Life”, by co-founder of the health and fitness company ‘Renaissance Periodization’ Nick Shaw, is for anyone (business executive or not), who is on a journey to success. Shaw was inspired by a traumatic event (in this case, his wife’s cancer diagnosis) and decided to share his journey with the world. Using his ‘pyramid of success’ (the important tenets being; work ethic, internal locus of control, positive mindset, discipline, purpose, failure and recharge) Shaw tells us how, with a focus on self-care, well-being and physical health, we, too, can find success. Shaw’s honest approach is relatable, and “Fit for Success” has great tools that are useful for anyone, in any field of work, who wants to attain personal satisfaction.
I work with Nick and consider him a friend, so I can't claim a review without complete impartially. However, I do think this is a great book and one that is well worth reading. I'm not the biggest fan of most self-help books. While there are some that are fantastic, most are shallow, repetitive, and I feel like they're forcing to extend the idea as much as possible to fill out of the pages. Fit for success stands out in the genre and it is a breath of fresh air.
Nothing you will read here is revolutionary. There are no magic tricks for success. If anything, that's the magic, knowing that there is no hidden secret. But there are definitely solid principles, and that's what Nick brings to the table.
There are several aspects that lead to success, but they are not all made equal. Some are more important than others, and it's crucial to know how these variables play out because the attention and effort you put into them should be proportional to their value. Nick organizes the principles into a pyramid, putting each most important at the bottom and the least important at the top. This makes sure you're not putting the cart before the horse. The principles being: work ethic, internal locus of control, positive mindset, discipline, purpose, failure, and recharge.
The book is divided by having a chapter for each component of the pyramid, exploring the topic, and explaining why it is important and what makes it so crucial for success. At the end of each chapter, it has a section on how to implement this principle, which is helpful so it's not thought of as some abstract idea that people will have difficulty putting into practice.
Something I really enjoyed is how Nick pulls from so many different sources in order to present his case. In fact, that's what got him to write the book in the first place. As he read countless self-help books, he noticed that similar themes ran through them, which is what the principles described are inspired by. I found this incredibly valuable as it distills the wisdom of the best self-help books into a single resource, a sort of meta-self-help. As mentioned, one of the main reasons I dislike self-help books is because they drag unnecessarily. Fit for success is exactly the opposite, it's incredibly concise and tells you exactly what you need to know without any fluff.
Lastly, Nick's experience is also incredibly helpful and inspirational. He has built a successful company that helped hundreds of thousands of people improve their health and fitness, and in 2020 he has had his fair share of obstacles in his own personal life. In January his wife Lori got diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer, and in the period of her chemotherapy treatment, the COVID lockdown started.
It's easy to focus on what you should in an ideal scenario, but once life throws everything at you the picture is completely different. Yet, you can still push on. That is, of course, one of the principles for success. No matter how blessed your life is, eventually chaos will creep in. Being able to withstand it and grow from it is key. This book will show you how to change your habits and mindset to become successful. No secrets, no gimmicks. The real deal.
I really liked the pyramid of success and how the author breaks down each level in a separate chapter. He lays it out nicely which makes it super easy to follow. I wish it was heavier on the self help portion but it’s a good book if you are looking to better your career.
"Hard work is the only thing that actually creates success. A brilliant inventor might have hundreds of ideas, but if he or she is too lazy to write them down, to expand on them, and to do the legwork to develop them, then that investor will achieve zero success." - Nick Shaw, Fit For Success
This book is now my latest most favourite non-fiction, self-help book!☺️ The book begins with a very moving preface, where the author's wife has shared her story and has explaind how in the face of darkness she chose to be positive and grateful. Her husband's principles of self-improvement helped her stay motivated and feel all the more positive.
The very moving preface is followed by a wonderful foreword by Bob Harper, where he has shared how Nick's fitness company, Renaissance Periodization, and his principles helped him continue his lifestyle with lesser restrictions compared to what he had anticipated.
The author, Nick Shaw has shared some very important and practical lessons on ways to achieve our goals. He has focused heavily on the importance of strengthening our desire to work.
As per the author, successful people have three related abilities in great abundance - 🌟the ability to work hard, 🌟the desire to do it, and 🌟the commitment to follow through on it. And I completely agree with that!
A total of seven crucial factors for achieving success have been mentioned in this book. They are:- 1. 🌟Work Ethic 2. 🌟Internal Locus of Control 3. 🌟Positive Mindset 4. 🌟Discipline 5. 🌟Purpose 6. 🌟Failure 7. 🌟Recharge
Every single chapter is a critical analysis of one of these factors. The second chapter is my most favourite. The author has not only discussed the importance of having an internal locus of control with the help of a case study, but has also discussed the stoic philosophy behind it, it's autonomy and the risks of having too much control. Deep analysis like this truly make the reading experience more enjoyable.
I really enjoyed reading it and found it to be very inspiring.
2020 has been the worst of years of our life, right? But no! It was bad for people who were busy cursing it and good for people who were trying to improve themselves instead of the situation.
Fit for success is a wonderful book ( I don't know actually what word should I dedicate to this book). I am a huge fan of self-help genre books and this book is now my favorite one.
Through this book, the author, Nick has shared how he accelerated the growth of his career by following 7 habits. These habits are not like any other habits that you once develop and leave in some time. The 7 habits are Work Ethics, Internal focus of Control, Positive Mindset, Disciplines, Purpose, Failure & Recharge.
Nick has shared his personal experiences and teaches us how we can adopt these habits and stay consistent with these habits.
Nick has also shared that 2020 was adverse for him too but he never gave up. His wife was diagnosed with breast cancer on 14 January 2020. Cancer is not a normal or usual disease and how Nick and his wife fought bravely against the disease is very commendable.
I took a very long time to read this book because in almost every page and sentence I had to indulge myself in deep thinking and analyze my own life. This book pushed me to think and glace at my life.
I would recommend this book to everyone. I can't praise this book enough because I can not tell you what changes I am feeling right now within my mind and how my way of thinking is also changed.
•A successful mindset requires optimism in spades, especially if you have entrepreneurial ambitions.•
I have been reading many nonfiction books and honestly, they keep me going. They are like a reminder for me to not give up, to embrace the change and keep going.
Fit for success is one such book. With the lessons on achievement and the seven habits of success that works as a reminder for each one of us.
The practical approach of the author with intriguing examples makes this book interesting. I liked how the author explained about each habit and how each one of them is essential in our journey of growth. I liked the end note 'putting into practice' at the end of every chapter.
With an intriguing writing style, inspiring examples and several concepts, the author has shared some practical ideas that will make our journey better and easier.
From embracing our failures to taking every obstacle as an opportunity, from work ethics to creating a balance, to relaxing, the author has discussed various topics and situations which we come across in our daily life.
I loved the real world view topic more. It's a short, light and inspiring read that you can pick up if you like reading self-help books.
This is the perfect book for this time of the year for so many reasons! We are coming to the end of 2020, where new goals and New Years resolutions will be formed. We all will take the step of putting 2020 in the rear view mirror to focus fully on the benefits 2021 will bring us!
Nick Shaw, author of Fit For Success and co-founder of Renaissance Periodization, a multi-million dollar health and fitness company is here to gear you up for your best year yet!
Fit For Success runs through Nick’s 7 Habits of Success. These include: Work Ethic, Internal Locus of Control, Positive Mindset, Discipline, Purpose & Meaning, Failure, and Recharge! These aren’t some “hoo-rah” habits to get you excited for 2021 and then let’s you fade into the abyss after a few weeks. No, these are sustainable habits that anyone can perfect. Nick, his wife, Lori, and his business is the testament to prove this.
2020 put us all on a roller coaster with the virus but Nick’s family was thrown on another ride when he found out his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer on Jan. 14, 2020. These habits served as their cornerstone as they battled the adversity that was set before them. The blessing in this story is you can learn to do the same with the same habits!
Nick in this book outlined the seven fundamentals to success, by serving as a foundation to personal development by tackling multiple areas that shape success. This is done concisely and packed with lessons from other books. Nick is a consumer of self-development books and knowledge. Every chapter contains several book references that support Nick’s idea. This gives the opportunity to have a concise book and proven ideas. It will also serve as a map for the reader on where to focus and what area in one’s life to focus on (discipline, rest, mindset…). And most importantly, every chapter ends with a task you can do to practice the outlined principle of that chapter. This is a great book to read. It will help you identify the key areas to focus on on your way towards self-development and success, with actionable tips to start with.
What a great book. I love how Nick Shaw used what he had read from multiple books and gave the reader some important pieces to learn from. This was a book I just couldn’t put down. What a great way to start off a new year by reading this. I have taken away a lot from this and will be using the information I’ve gathered to make my year successful.
"A person’s mindset is one of the key pillars of success. In fact, there are seven main habits to success, and a strong work ethic lays the foundation. That is where everything starts and where change can begin; however—as I learned— without the right mindset, it’s impossible for anyone to be successful, whether in sports, business, or battling cancer." ⠀ -Nick Shaw ⠀ Here's what Fit for Success by Nick Shaw is all about👇⠀ ⠀ The Seven Key Habits to Success⠀ ⠀ 1️⃣ WORK ETHIC By definition, this is the most foundational habit for success in any venture. A strong work ethic is critical, since success itself is only possible through the application of hard work. ⠀ ⠀ 2️⃣ INTERNAL LOCUS OF CONTROL This is the belief that individuals—not external forces— have control over the outcomes of the events in their lives. ⠀ ⠀ 3️⃣ POSITIVE MINDSET It’s important that you remain positive. An optimistic mindset actually increases your chances of success.⠀ ⠀ 4️⃣ DISCIPLINE It’s not always going to be smooth sailing. Sometimes, you will have to really dig in to get things done, and that requires discipline. ⠀ ⠀ 5️⃣ PURPOSE Knowing your purpose will help you to target your productivity, making sure that you’re not simply doing things, but that you’re doing the right things. If, at some point during the process, you ask, “What am I grinding for?” your purpose will provide the answer.⠀ ⠀ 6️⃣ FAILURE You can be as disciplined as humanly possible, with a strong work ethic, a positive mindset, and a resolute focus on your purpose, yet there will be times when you will still fail. It’s just going to happen from time to time, but how you choose to deal with it can determine how successful you ultimately become. ⠀ ⠀ 7️⃣ RECHARGE Even the most highly disciplined and driven folks can burn out. That is why it’s important to recharge. You can do this through exercise and nutrition, through personal growth, and through meditation and self-reflection. ⠀ -⠀ MY THOUGHTS ⠀ All seven habits to success in this book are essential. If you've never read a self-help book before you'll get a lot from Fit for Success. If you have, it'll be good review.
I just finished reading this book today and it was pure awesome. The book talks about the habits of success pyramid, developed by Nick Shaw and the team at his company, Renaissance Periodization, that consists of:
1. Work Ethic 2. Internal Locus of Control 3. Positive Mindset 4. Discipline 5. Purpose 6. Failure 7. Recharge
These are the qualities and attributes that a person needs in order to succeed. Each one complementing the other and without each and every one of them, it is almost impossible to achieve success and mastery in your craft. What really amazes me was the reason why Nick Shaw decided to write this book. During the start of quarantine last year, Nick Shaw's wife, Lori Shaw, was diagnosed with cancer and it was a really hard time for them. However, instead of playing the victim card, they rose up to the occasion and beat the odds.
Instead of giving in to cancer, they decided that they wanted to surround themselves with positivity. Nick started to spend his lockdown reading self development books and apply those principles to his family. This led to Nick, finding a similar pattern in most self help books which outlines the different habits of success, that he compiled together as a framework/pyramid in this book.
Lori said that, looking back, it was those principles outlined in this book that helped her overcome a cancer diagnosis successfully. I find this story truly inspirational, in which it taught me, when the going gets rough, there is still an option for you. The best one would be to keep going and keep fighting, no matter what. And this is where the habits of success pyramid comes in, which is going to help you on your journey to success.
The book feels like a summary of a lot of well known research and other books, many of which I’ve already read. It didn’t add much and could be much better even if it didn’t introduce any new concepts if the author would have focused more on personal experiences than making up anecdotes from other areas.
The book undoubtedly carries a good message, but I feel you could read page 7-10 (Nick’s pyramid), the first paragraph in each subsection, and the recommended reading list in the back and get all you need to know.
Almost every paragraph is drawn from outside literature, so much so that Nick barely mentions what went into making his own company successful. I think he references the book “Flourish” about 20 times. I found the language to be long winded, yet overly simple. This book could have been 50 pages.
Again, enjoyed the content, but having read most of the referenced literature, I feel that Nick added little in his book. I think more original content from his own experiences (like RP iterating on templates from Excel to an app) would go a long way.
If you want to check a weapon's capability then let it go through some devastating wars. You will get your desired results through it. Like wise we all faced this in 2020 in the name of Covid-19.It totally changed the world, it's value and the basic thing that human needs to survive is MINDSET.
This book is written during this pandemic by Nick Shaw and in it he has mentioned about how he performed his best even after finding his beloved wife diagnosed with breast cancer. After being a life coach in Renaissance Periodization and being a life trainer to athletes and many person, he had to face that ultimate test in his personal life as well. It's quite hard. Isn't it?
So here Nick found those experience to be penned in a book which gonna be helpful to the people in the world. Here he focuses on those 7 habits that accelerated his success even in those periods. Those are
1. Work Ethic:- Most basic and critical and very much important to set the base for habit building.
2. Internal Locus of Control:- It's the internal belief or you can say the great wall for external deviations.
3. Positive Mindset:- Its the liquid nitrogen which will give the thrust to sky rocket the success.
4. Discipline:- It is the toughest part but it acts as the heart of building habits for building success.
5. Purpose & Meaning:- It contains very important question i.e "WHY SHOULD I?" . It is the reason that put you in the track on the path of success.
6. Failure:- It is the unavoidable part of success building. But it is the most valuable part of it as well. The perfect word that can replace it is "LEARNING".
7. Recharge:- It has very close relation with the word Discipline because it is the only thing that keeps it in loop till you reach the phase of success. It contains exercise, nutrition, personal growth, meditation and self reflection.
To achieve success one need to build the habit like successful people. His mindset should be like that as well.No matter what happens It needs to be grinded. It needs to be kept in loop. This book is an ultimate example of this. One can control its disturbing inside but can't the outside disturbances. But this books shares the ways how to maintain those things that are in our hand. I would say it's a must read for the year 2021 who thinks everything has changed in a wrong way during this pandemic.
Everything that add to progress should be adjusted and understanding how to adjust them, can improve course amendment and dynamics which can affect prosperity in life and business.
Do you look upon achievers, wanting to know their secrets of success? Do you have an instinct for triumph but lack the guidance?
Well, Nick Shaw probably provides a way. In his book, 'Fit for Success'- an instinctive guide that helps accomplishing objectives, author Nick Shaw does a particularly extraordinary job separating everything into absorbable strides for progress. I figure this book isn't only an amazing asset for anybody setting out on their own excursion to progress, it likewise offers the people who've been battling to remain roused, en route. This was a genuinely necessary read, particularly in 2021, when disparities of the unknown cause havoc.
Nick puts forth the habits, routines and useful takeaways from successful people and provides an apprehension on how one can foster those equivalent propensities to flourish, regardless of the deterrents. Through this book, the author has shared the lessons he's taken in life and some significant takeaways for self-introspection and assessment. But, above all, he shares how you can utilize these propensities to fabricate your own way to success. This book feels like it was made for a year loaded with startling things, just as this one!
After this pandemic, everything changed totally, our outlook, our devotion and this book clears our approach to coordinate spotlight on objectives and guide to make progress. In this book, Nick has ably drawn a guide for pursuers which is simple and the most ideal route through which you can discover accomplishment in your life. Through a pyramid of principles, he describes priorities, success and work-life primacy.
Overall, an extraordinary read, especially for wellness experts hoping to develop. The manner in which it is introduced bodes well, utilizing a pyramid of standards to separate help effectively run after life goals and objectives and successfully ace them.
People are always looking for a secret to success or a way to bypass a lot of the hard work. What the author @nick.shaw.rp discovered about the secret to success, however, is that there is no secret. Instead, it requires a relentless commitment to the basics. The main theme of the book is the pyramid for success which has 7 key habits to success:
Work Ethic Internal Locus of Control Postive Mindset Discipline Purpose Failure Recharge
You’re going to need to start with the foundation of a tenacious work ethic. Once you understand that hard work is paramount, you’ll need to focus on what you can control. Throughout the entire process, a positive mindset and selfefficacy is crucial. Assert your discipline to help you win the small, daily battles. Then, You must also know your overall purpose. That will help you to push through the hard days when things go wrong and you find yourself questioning if all the hard work is really worth it. You will fail at times. Understanding this at the beginning and focusing on your sense of purpose will be your guide, keeping you on the right path to overcome these obstacles. While hard work is absolutely necessary, being successful over the long term also requires a balance between work ethic and the willingness (and commitment) to recharge. You have to take proper care of your mind and your body if you want to maintain that necessary work ethic.
As a global pandemic continues to impact the world, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. It’s also easy to feel powerless. But if you are equipped with the right knowledge, you can successfully overcome any obstacles in your way. The right knowledge is right here ! In the book that I hold.
The best part of this book is how well read the author is and the number of book references and examples he gives. It felt like a recap for me for the books I had already read that he mentioned and made notes for the new ones I heard of.
These 194 pages are a Joyride if you are really seeking out to be successful. @bookstarpr @nick.shaw.rp #bookstarpr

He wrote this book with a extensive knowledge he learnt through ups and down. Reading good books kept him motivated all the time & i liked how he expressed his journey while life strokes him bluntly.
His positive mindset helped his wife creating better strength and fight breast cancer is great example to set and will help contributing in breast cancer awareness program.
This book mentioned "the seven habits". These habits are key to unlocking those barriers hindering your productivity. Title specific to its niche and content gave clear and precise directions.
By reading few pages you will realise how potential a book is and make you aware it's just a lack of few things that aren't letting you take that extra push to start your success journey and how to overcome.
It's more based upon scientific research and analysis which is brilliant take to share to the reader. Experiences mentioned in this book and habits explained are phenomenal.
Book is arranged well in order. It's engaging and worthy. I loved reading to the point crystal clear explanation it is serving.
Privileged with knowledge of habits that people are Lacking & should acquire, it fits perfectly with self improvement books
Text is filled with sea of concepts you would diving into, it's 150 pages simple read. Has a pyramid willingly to sort out all the problems you have regardless of who you are. It's becoming the reader's choice across the country wide.
The premise of Fit for Success is that, much like fitness, success requires preparation, discipline, and balance. Author Nick Shaw is a fitness entrepreneur, and so has the perfect perspective to speak on this concept that bridges both worlds.
Nick's wife Lori Shaw prefaced the book with the poignant story of her cancer diagnosis. It was the principles Nick teaches in Fit for Success that helped her get through such a difficult time and move forward to live a happier and more successful life.
Fit for Success highlights seven key habits that Nick arranges in a hierarchy of importance. From bottom to top, the habits are:
• Work Ethic • Internal Locus of Control (one of my favourites) • Positive Mindset • Discipline • Purpose • Failure • Recharge
The book begins with the fundamental principles and walks the reader through each one, progressing upward.
One of my favourite points in the book was Nick's explanation of how we often do 90% of the work required to reach a goal, but in many cases 90% of the work yields 0% of the results. It's a fact that stings, but it tells us that we require the full spectrum of work ethic: "The ability to work hard, the desire to do it, and the commitment to follow through on it."
Nick is a fanatic for reading personal development books. Quotes and inspirations from many great books occupy these pages. All his sources are neatly arranged in a recommended reading section at the back of the book, which is a wonderful resource in and of itself, and a great launching point for your own reading/development journey.
Fit for Success is an easy read. It highlights many important habits for success, and it comes from an honest and valuable source. It is nicely arranged, and for bonus points it is beautifully designed. I recommend it as a valuable introduction to the habits listed above, and a solid launching point for those who want to learn more.

Nick Shaw is the co-founder of Renaissance Periodization™, a company that has helped top athletes and hundreds of thousands of people worldwide, which makes what's in his book an open door to his knowledge and own experience.

In his book 'Fit For Success', Nick Shaw provides a practical guide for progress and success. The book is backed by concrete takeaways and examples on how we can embrace challenges in life.
Nick has shared 'The Habit of Success' pyramid that was developed by his team under his guidance.
Each element of this pyramid is a foundation for success:
1. Work Ethic- a strong work ethic is vital for success as only hard work and proper direction can help us to achieve success in the long run.
2. Internal Locus of Control- we must be able to distinguish between what we can do and what we cannot.
3. Positive Mindset- a progressive and optimistic mindset is a must for attaining success. So being positive is important in life.
4. Discipline- it the most important aspect we all must need to inculcate in order to excel in the field we want to. Discipline keeps us going when things are not in our favor.

If you're looking for easy solutions to success, this is not the book for you. But if you're interested in pragmatic advice to improve yourself on a daily basis, you should definitely read Fit for Success. In less than 150 pages, Nick Shaw takes a simple and practical look at the key elements for achieving your goals. As he writes, many people spend their energy searching for some phantom secret to becoming successful, but the truth is that it doesn't exist and the sooner we understand it, the sooner we can start to dedicate ourselves to the habits that will bring us closer to the person we want to become. For those of you who are new to personal growth books, these concepts may sound familiar, but what sets this manual apart from many others is the concreteness with which the author lays them out. Whether he is talking about the work ethic or the importance of having a purpose, Shaw never forgets to remind us that 'as with everything, there is a happy medium' that must be pursued. I have to say that his ability to put his teachings into real life, urging us to stay away from excess, is what impressed me the most. I also really appreciated the practical tips he gave at the end of each of the seven chapters. For the most part, these are small tips, such as keeping a diary or noting down and analysing particular events in one's life, but because of their simplicity they seemed easy to apply. @bookstarpr

A lot of the self-help fodder out there can be blog posts padded out into a book with a swear word clickbaity title, the Mcdonalds' variety of repetitive filler content if you will, but this book with its post-chapter recap interview conversations to reflect (audiobook version), comes across more pragmatic and practical with less cheese than a guru marketing culty 'life coach' find your blind spots coaching pyramid scheme. It will also serve as a great reading list as many classic works in the field are referenced with their nuggets of wisdom.
Although not offering anything new it is a great starting point for some good orderly direction, habit cultivation, principles and thinking processes and a refresher for those already well-read in the field.
The information contained is a mental compliment to the physical training content provided from the RP Strength crew.
“I realize that not every day will be a great day, but every day is an opportunity to get closer to where I want to be, whether I’m motivated or not,” says Annie Thorisdottir and is very well quoted in the book. There is no secret formula to success and we all are aware about it. How this book is different than other books on the same niche? Well, this book serves you with fresh perspective and set of principles that you need to follow in order to be successful in your career or life.
The author very beautifully prioritizes the principles one by one and likewise, the chapters are divided. So, the reader will get the clarity of what is most important and what is not equally important. Further, it’s not a why book but a how book. How can you implement the ideas? How can you stand out? How can you turn your life around? Many questions, one answer- this book.
The author had a really difficult time during the year 2020 but he still faced all of them and kept working on the important things. This book is an outcome of it. He has come a long way and he is the right person to tell you all that you need to know if you are starting out or stuck in the middle. This is the perfect choice for all the people out there. I highly recommend it. MUST BUY.
