The Inn at Holiday Bay #14

Details in the Document

Rate this book
A heartwarming cozy mystery series about losing everything, taking a chance, and starting again.

After suffering a personal tragedy Abby Sullivan buys a huge old seaside mansion she has never even seen, packs up her life in San Francisco, and moves to Holiday Bay Maine, where she is adopted, quite against her will, by a huge Maine Coon Cat named Rufus, a drifter with her own tragic past named Georgia, and a giant dog with an inferiority complex named Ramos. What Abby thought she needed was alone time to heal. What she ended up with was, an inn she never knew she wanted, a cat she couldn't seem to convince to leave, and a new family she'd never be able to live without.

In book 14 in the series, Abby finds out that she owns a small plot of land that was linked by deed to the land where the inn now sits. The deed linking the two parcels of land had been created even before Chamberlain Westminster bought it, and since the plot was basically worthless, it had been more than a century since anyone had paid a bit of attention to it. Until now that is.

Meanwhile a whole new group of guests check into the inn each with their own story to tell.

Kathi lives with her husband, kids, grandkids, and dogs in beautiful Lake Tahoe. When she isn't writing, Kathi likes to read (preferably at the beach or by the fire), cook (preferably something with chocolate or cheese,) and garden (planting and planning not weeding). She also enjoys spending time on the water when she's not hiking, biking, or snowshoeing, the miles of desolate trails surrounding her home.
Kathi uses the mountain setting in which she lives, along with the animals (wild and domestic) that share her home, as inspiration for her cozy mysteries.

This was another first rate mystery by Ms. Daley. I feel like I've become friends with Abby, Georgia, Jeremy and Colt as I've read every book in the series. This book as more than one story to tell as Holiday Bay is threatened by a hurricane, people are stranded at the inn due to road closures and a mysterious guest seems to be hiding a secret. A quickly paced plot and deft twists and turns kept me reading until I reached the end.

3.5 stars, but I'll round up to 4 because I like this series so much. I enjoyed this one, but it felt like a "springboard" basically just existing to introduce new plot points for future books. And as such, I feel a bit unfulfilled and as a whole, the story felt like it never really came together. The main plot about the inn's guest who was acting strangely and later found shot on the beach after the storm and dying soon after was a good plot but I felt like it was shoved into the background, and other smaller/less important things were given more space instead, like the bones recovered from the plot of land Abby didn't even know she owned - which also led to a lot of pages on expanding the inn. That stuff should be in the background, not eclipsing the main plot. I did like that Abby finally got resolution about the death of her husband and son.

I also questioned the hurricane as a plot device. The book is set in late spring (I'm guessing late April or early May) and there was a hurricane. Hurricane season is June 1st through November 1st, but really doesn't get cranking until late summer/September. So how was there a hurricane racing up the coast before hurricane season even started? Hmm...looked it up, in the entire history of tracking storms, only 2 were before June 1st, one in 1887 and one in 1951, so I guess it's possible but unlikely.

Did I love the book? Sure, I look forward to each one and devour it in one evening but I'd say it's not one of my favorites and I'd probably skip it on a re-read.

At The Inn at Holiday Bay, owner Abby Sullivan, business partner Georgia Carter and their employees plan to spend a quiet, guest-free week catching up on maintenance before their next big rush. But when a hurricane hits nearby, closing the roads, the inn is over-full with guests, including a pregnant woman and her husband, a group of cheerleaders, and a mysterious man with a bag of cash and a gun.

This time the mystery has two parts -- who is this mysterious man who is stuck at the Inn with everyone during the hurricane, and later, who killed him. That adds another layer to an otherwise ordinary mystery, but it's still not enough. While I love the interpersonal interactions between the characters, in this one, the murder mystery seems like an afterthought. If the author had gone into more depth on the plot behind the murder, this would have been a much better book.

Details in the Document earns 4.5/5 Stranded Guests...Engaging Fun!

After resolving the emotional storm of learning the woman who caused the accident that killed her husband and young child has come forward, Abby turns her attentions to the hurricane on the horizon. Literally. There are no reservations set for the week, so Inn-mates busy themselves prepping the Inn by boarding things up and put things away. The storm drops buckets of water causing road closures, so the empty Inn filled up to brimming with several unexpected guests: one very pregnant, several underage, and another with a gun! But, it’s after the storm that provides the biggest mystery. An unidentified gunshot victim is found on a nearby beach, and while investigating a large piece of property Abby previously was unaware she owned, a skull, well several skulls are uncovered. Mysteries...what d’ya tell you!

Kathi Daley has done very well to keep and increase her fan base with The Inn at Holiday Bay series. Those who like a suspicious death turned felonious with their mystery, don’ t give up, it is there. Late in the drama a gunshot victim is found with a surprising identity and shocking story that leads to an “Oh, no!” moment. However, mysteries abound when a mass burial site is also uncovered adding more Who-s? What-s? Why-s? A good portion of the reading journey is taken up by revisiting the accident that killed Abby’s husband and child, prepping for and living through the Cat-2 hurricane, the suspicious man staying in the attic suite, the first birth at the Inn, a lucrative offer to buy Abby’s property, and everyday events, concerns, and issues. It’s realistic that everything in the book doesn’t take place in the presence of or instigated by the main character, but as a reader, I’d like more involvement with those mysteries thru eavesdropping on phone conversations, spying on clandestine meetings, and listening to interviews. Some of the “cozy mystery” is lost when these events occur off the page. However, I enjoy every time meeting up with Abby enjoying how Kathi Daley has created a well-rounded, strong female character who is a survivor along with her friends, her relationship with Colt, other relationships growing, weddings being planned, and the future painted as bright.

In this next book of the series the gang is looking forward to some time off from guests so they can get some work done around the Inn. The time off goes out the window when a hurricane hits filling the inn with stranded motorists. Abby is happy to help those in need but has a guest who is acting strange. When he is gone right after the hurricane she wonders what the man was all about. She soon learns that he has been found dead, shot. Abby wants to help figure out what brought the man to Holiday Bay and who would want him dead. Meanwhile she learns she owns a plot of land that she didn't know was part of the deal when she bought the inn. To make matters worse quite a few dead bodies were found on said land. It looks like a serial killer used the site as a burial spot. As things come to a head Abby learns some information about the accident.that killed her husband and child. Follow along as Abby tries to make sense of all that is going, hoping she'll be able to help bring things to an end and make peace with the past.

A very interesting and detailed book involving a hurricane, missing people, a birth and a murder. Having survived hurricanes in my younger years, this brought back lots of memories. I felt like I was living through another one. I felt the closeness that comes when you are living through the dangers with strangers. This is a fabulous book!

A hurricane threatens Holiday Bay, and flooded roads cause major issues for travelers, leading to an unexpectedly full inn for Abby and Georgia.
A mysterious guest, as well as some unexpected land ownership with a macabre twist makes for an intriguing mystery or two for Abby and friends to figure out.
As with the previous books in this delightful series, there is not only mystery, but just the perfect amount of warmth, friendship and romance to make it a most satisfying and enjoyable read. Highly recommended.

Details in the Document is the fourteenth book in Kathi Daley’s heartwarming The Inn at Holiday Bay series. The well-plotted storyline flows smoothly in this clean read, and there are lots of twists and red herrings in the complex mysteries contained within this book. The setting is charming, and the well-developed characters are three-dimensional, compassionate, and caring. I highly recommend this series to readers who enjoy well-crafted cozy mysteries.

After Abby Sullivan’s lost her husband and their infant son in a tragic accident, she moved to Holiday Bay, Maine, opened the Inn at Holiday Bay, made a new life for herself, and found a home and a family. Georgia Carter, who has also overcome obstacles in her life, is the inn’s talented cook/baker and manager, and she and her Newfoundland dog, Ramos, live with Abby, Rufus, a Maine Coon, and Molly, a terrier mix, in a cottage on the property. Georgia’s cable cooking show, Cooking with Georgia, is doing very well. Jeremy Slater, who lives in the inn’s basement apartment with his young niece, Annabelle, is a valuable asset who helps with the inn’s day-to-day operations.

In this installment, the inn has been closed to guests for two weeks so Abby, Georgia, and Jeremy can do a thorough cleaning and make minor repairs, but as a hurricane approaches Holiday Bay and roads are closed, stranded motorists seek shelter, and the inn is fuller than it’s ever been. After being contacted by the phone company, Abby learns that in addition to the property where the inn is located, she’s the owner of a one hundred acre parcel of basically useless land. Georgia’s boyfriend, Tanner, accompanies Abby and Georgia to look at the property, and while there, Georgia makes a gruesome discovery. Police Chief Colt Wilder, who is also Abby’s boyfriend, has his hands full trying to locate residents who went missing during the storm, as well as a new murder to solve.

As always I like this series, but this book ends with too many loose ends for my liking. The main crime is solved, but not really. The person who killed Abby's husband and son gives herself up, but that's it, no follow through. Nikki has a new boyfriend, but we find out nothing about him, etc. I don't enjoy when things are introduced without follow through.

Still I really like the book, the characters, the location, and the pets. I like how the relationships are progressing, but we need to know more about the other people in the relationships. I don't need details, but it would be nice to find out how the couples are doing and if they have future plans.

Looking forward to the next book when we may find out what Ben was investigating when he died and maybe Abby will get a letter from the person who was responsible for the accident. I'd like to find out more about the kidnapping too.

I’ll give this a 3.5. I love reading books from this series when I need a break from reading the deep darker books. This is an easy read and the characters are likeable.. it’s a fun mystery…

Back on Track

Finally, this book and story of the series is back on track and what I expect when I pick up one of Kathie Daley's books. I would say that the last 2 or 3 books of the series just did not have the "spark" that I was looking for. I really thought about stopping my reading of the series and I really was enthralled with the theme of this series from the first book. However, this book has restored my faith and I felt that this story got the series back on track. It was interesting, the c hog staffers were familiar and in a good way, there were several mysteries being told and they were woven together well along with the backstory of the series. I lovd the Maine setting and the inn which Abby has mad a go of. I like reading about the people that come to the inn and the mysteries that pop up either about them or within the community. I like how the animals, dogs and cats, are woven into the fabric of the story in a real life way. There is romance, Abby is getting on with her life after her husband and baby boy were killed in a car accident. With this book comes some long awaited answers to some of life's questions for Abby (the main character), and there is an element of surprise and anticipation leading into the next book of the series. This time it was a fun read and I can truly say, I'm looking to read more books in the series in the future.

Preparing for storm season, Hurricane to be exact, is still very scary, whether this is your first or fiftieth. The Inn is supposed to be closed for deep cleaning as well as not having guests to worry about if the storm hits as predicted.
When the road closes and people can't continue their travels, Abby and Georgia find themselves with more guests than rooms. Included among those guests are children, a pregnant woman, and several much appreciated older guests.
Abby also is informed that when she purchased the Inn, it came with additional acres of land.
Useless to most, it is the best place to build a cell tower. What could be a much needed windfall, allowing Abby to expand the inn and build more guest rooms, comes with its own more sinister discovery and complications.
What I love about this series are the friendships. The way people pull together and make the best in difficult situations. There is such a sense of hopefulness and possibility, even during distressing times. I always look forward to meeting new people, having past guests visit, and watching Abby's new life unfold.

A lot of nothing

This book sounded so good but never got anywhere. There was very little romance, suspense and although many characters there was very little character development. The only time it got the least bit interesting was the last couple of pages and she left us hanging. I guess I have to read the next book to get any answers and that won’t be happening. I almost quit reading this book after the first couple of chapters and now wish I had.

A storm, kidnapping, and a dozen bodies

So the kidnapping was really, once again, rather easy to see through although who killed Conrad and took the money remains a mystery.. the 11 bodies uncovered by the storm are the next book in the series presumably and finally.. how many books on we come back to Ben and his cold case which are mentioned right at the end.. bit late but I hope it's worth it we've waited long enough..

Summary

This was an easy read. I liked the setting and I felt like I could picture the inn and persons working/staying there. I thought the kidnap/ransom story was a bit awkward and hard to follow but I did want to read to the end . I didn't feel satisfied with the conclusion of the investigation. Still, I will be reading next book.

The main points in this read:

1. The person who caused Abby’s husband and son’s death came forward and confessed to being the one who ran after the crash.
2. Big storm
3. 11 skulls four decades old unearthed on Abby’s land across the Highway.
4. Missing people from the stormy night.
5. Man staying at the inn seen with a bag of cash and a gun.
6. Gunshot victim from the night after the storm - later found to be the man at the inn that had the cash.
7. Pastor Noah and Christy finding it difficult to set up a wedding now that Noah’s mother butted in trying to make it the wedding of her own dreams instead of the engaged couple’s dreams.
8. Kidnapped woman.
9. A lady who worked Cold cases with Abby’s late husband Ben asking to meet with Abby for lunch.
10. Expanding the Inn.

Interesting thought for readers that Abby said, “I wondered if a baby’s reaction to being born in any way was a predictor of the sort of personality they’d develop as they grew older.”
Personally, I believe this statement to be true, regarding my two boys anyway. My older son was very quiet and calm and just wanted to sleep the moment he was born. He didn’t cry the few days we were in the hospital. Her is 25 and is still mellow and soft spoken - always has been. On the other hand, my 9 yr old was born into this world crying and making a fuss. He would only silence when being fed and being held close. He is still very much active and is loud and is extremely close to me still. They’re both so different…but I digress…

Like all previous 13 books, most of the mysteries have been solved, but also like the previous, the next book will have answers to the rest.

Next book is The 15th of 18. The Inn at Holiday Bay: Clue in the Clam.

A personal tragedy led Abby Sullivan to Holiday Bay where she now owns a successful seaside inn and has a new family of friends and animals including the large Maine Coon cat named Rufus who adopted her. It's early Spring and the inn is closed but they soon have a houseful of people thanks to a category 2 hurricane headed their way and floods closing the roads. When the danger has passed, the body of a murdered man is found and Abby is pulled into the investigation. There's also a huge mystery going on with a plot of land that Abby just discovered is hers.

Kathi Daley writes some awesome cozy mysteries and this is one of my favorite series. I love the theme of starting over when life throws you a curve ball. The book's well-written with wonderful characters you'll love getting to know and I truly enjoyed it. I was pulled in from the beginning and kept hooked throughout reading this book in one sitting. I'm really looking forward to the next book. I highly recommend both book and series which I suggest you read in order.

Nice story

I like to read Kathi's short stories, and this was another good one. However I have, at least in this series, one across some areas that should have been researched better by the author and her editors. It looks like that was not done for this series that takes place in New England. Hurricanes generally do not take place in the spring of the year, the season begins in June and lasts through November. If an early one (June) should occur if would be an extremely fare thing for a bad one to it dissipate by the time it got that far north - due to the very cold temps of the Atlantic ocean. I have found a few things in this series relative to New England temps that -to me anyway- have not been researched properly, maybe because the author is more familiar with West coast area. I still enjoy her various series and will continue to do so, as long as I can hold a book or my kindle.

Great book!!!!

I love, love this series!!!!
Abby and Georgia are looking forward to get some much needed cleaning and repairs now that they have a couple of weeks before they have guests. But mother nature has other plans for them.
There is a hurricane that is heading toward Holiday Bay, so everyone in town is preparing for the storm. Abby, Georgia and Jeremy are getting the Inn ready to weather the storm and find out the roads are being closed toward the west of the highway, are now getting guests stranded.
They end up with 25 guests in all, but there is one guest that is acting very suspicious and is holed up in the attic suite and stays to hisself, ordering meals brought to his room. As time and the storm keep going, he disappears. No one knows anything about him, so Abby calls Colt the chief of police to let him know about a missing guests.
What they find out is crazy that was happening.
Now you have to get this book to find out what happened to him!!!!

Hurricane at the Bay aids Abby in healing

The Holiday Bay series has many addictive stories. Yet Abby's personal insights come to the foreground in this one! With a multitude of events that cause her to look inside herself, she begins to find a way through some of her biggest hurdles. All her insights come to her as the crew is faced with a hurricane, a woman in labor, a mysterious guest in Suite 6, and a car accident! And then there's the arm noticed on land she didn't know she owned. This book just keeps on giving as the series continues to develop the crew (Abby, Georgia & Jeremy) and their personalities more & more. This is a series that has had me hooked since Book1 and just keeps me looking forward to the mysteries & other storylines of the next one to come. Be prepared to spend some quality time in Holiday Bay.
How I wish I could visit this inn in real life!

Abby Sullivan finally finds out the identity of the person who was responsible for the hit and run accident that killed her husband Ben and Jonathan, their baby son. Changes in her life situation prompted that individual to come forward and confess three and a half years later.
A category two hurricane is heading up the coast toward Maine. Abby and her staff prepare the inn for high winds and potential power outages. Fortunately, they had the week planned for doing maintenance so no rooms were booked. But when the storm arrives and roads become impassible, stranded travelers begin showing up at their door. Suddenly the inn is packed with an interesting group of people in need of food and lodging. Many interesting events take place in this book, making the reader look forward to the next episode in the series.

Details in the Document ( The Inn at Holiday Bay #14 )
By: Kathi Daley
Details in the Document is book fourteen in the series The Inn at Holiday Bay. Abby and Georgia plans for a shut down for the Inn for some deep cleaning and repairs. They are also having a hurricane headed their way and all roads are closed. Well this leads to a mysterious guest, and soon a full Inn. Will the hurricane hit the Inn? Abby and Georgia are also thinking about plans for the Inn. Abby gets some news that she was not prepared for. Hurricane, mystery, murder, news, friendship, and romance all play a good part in this wonderful mystery story you do not want to miss out on. Love the story and the characters, both are well written and well develop.

Details in the Document is the 14th book in the wonderful The Inn at Holiday Bay cozy mystery series by Kathi Daley. This story takes place in the charming tourist town of Holiday Bay, Maine. A hurricane causes flooded roads which strands motorists and brings several unexpected guests and unexpected events to the Inn. Then a mysterious stranger is later found dead. Abby and friends work to find answers to help solve the murder. The elements of a cozy mystery are present including suspense, danger, love, friends and family, and a sense of community. As always, Ms. Daley’s writing flows smoothly, and her setting and relatable characters make for an extremely enjoyable read. I really look forward to reading the next book in this series.

Bought it (on my kindle unlimited subscription), read it in 1 go, reviewed it! As good as the other books in the series and I can't wait for the next one.

Situated in a historic inn now a guest house owned by Abby, this series of cozy mystery stories has an underlying mystery throughout all the books, that of the death of Abby's husband and police officer, Ben and young son Jonathan, in a car accident.

I couldn't put the book down, hence my having a very early morning, late night! It was well worth it though. I can't wait to read the next installment of this captivating series.

Stormy Weather

As a before-season hurricane turns north unexpectedly, with little notice, the inn is filled with stranded travelers seeking refuge. A mystery unfolds surrounding a secretive guest, who disappears once the storm abates. Abby is confronted with memories from her life in San Francisco, and is offered some closure. Lots of other drama and decisions will keep you turning the page, reading just one more chapter - and it’s well worth getting to the last paragraph. I’m looking forward to The Clue in the Clam.

One of Daley's Best Series

Abby, Georgia and Tanner go to check out some property across from the Inn that she didn't know she owned until the phone company contacted her about buying the land to put up a cell tower--and they find a lot of human bones. The FBI is called in and now they are looking at a serial killer in a California prison who has confessed to killing 11 people in Maine. There is also a kidnapping story line and a hurricane. Lots of interesting things occurring in this episode.

Love this series . Holiday Bay is expecting a Hurricane and people get stranded and Abby and Georgia get busy at the Inn which is empty but ends up full. The first person to arrive is Conrad and he is the one that they are skeptical about. There is a variety of guests that you will learn about. Abby receives some news about who hit the car that killed her husband and child. The phone company wants to buy a piece of property that Abby didn't know she had for a cell phone tower. Lots of things going on. A GOOD READ
